Stim made the crucial observation that `appreciation’ here means appreciating without judgment, without discrimination, across the board.

Pia Iger:  It is easy for me to appreciate the good things, love, beauty, happiness, but hard to appreciate the other kinds, hardship/anger/, etc.
Stim Morane: but here “appreciate” means something new, and applies in the same way to all

Pema Pera: Everything has its own intelligence and energy, every aspect of anything in life, and it also has a tendency to move — the choice we have is to blindly follow this motion, or to appreciate the intelligence and energy; Being extends an invitation to us to “stop” rather than to move, and so to appreciate

Pema Pera: Being implies appreciation, as the positive side of the coin of not-doing, a term that sounds negative perhaps. Appreciation of intelligence and energy of everything, certainly also of anger.

Pema Pera: Being may sound cold and philosophical, but its character of appreciation connects with devotion and love and all that makes us tick within spiritual approaches . . . .
Pema Pera: starting with appreciation is perhaps a bit more cautious an approach, compared to many spiritual traditions that start with more specific instructions, that can be very powerful but also lead to a more narrow approach,to the exclusion of other approaches

Pema Pera: We shouldn’t do as if everything means the same, that would be disrespectful to the traditions. Each tradition has its own terms and flavors and we can learn from all of them
Pema Pera: but also we should not wait till we understand them all!
Pema Pera: We should start to appreciate our life, the world, each other, ourselves and move ahead with that, then in the process we can learn to discriminate terms and traditions. Like learning to taste wine. At first it is just red wine and white wine, but then we learn to appreciate the differences
Pema Pera: same with Being and emptiness and openneess and suchness and true nature
Pema Pera: each has their own vintage :)
