2009.09.01 13:00 - Noisy class and more retreat

The Guardian for this meeting was Mickorod Renard.

arabella Ella: i would never know how to say all that in the german language so your english is excellent Bert
Bertram Jacobus: very good but heavy exercise
arabella Ella: yes but with time it will be much easier believe me ... it takes practice
Mickorod Renard: yes, I find it amazing at how good so many non english peoples english language is here
    Mickorod Renard: peoples
    arabella Ella: :)
arabella Ella: and what about the English of the English people Mick?
    arabella Ella: he he
Mickorod Renard: I am afraid the english of the english is poor
arabella Ella: but a language is something alive which changes
Bertram Jacobus: but i have to admit, i like perfection in some kind - lol - not very appreciated by many - but ... for language this is very difficult, also for communication ... ;-)
Mickorod Renard: but its very regional
arabella Ella: and i wonder whether English will change even more with the text young ppl use on their mobile phones
Mickorod Renard: I suspect it will Ara
arabella Ella: yes Bert language is difficult when you wish to achieve perfection
    arabella Ella: :)
Bertram Jacobus: ty. you understand me. nice .
    arabella Ella: yes
Mickorod Renard: but in the end its a laguage, a means of communication and I see no problem in its fluidity
arabella Ella: but as you know lots of people here speak a number of different languages
Bertram Jacobus: oh i have a lot of problems in fluidity ! ;o)
arabella Ella: and i know how difficult i find it when i suddenly have to switch language and i hate making mistakes too but i know it is inevitable

SophiaSharon Larnia: nice, what is the music playing in the background????
    Mickorod Renard: dont know

Bertram Jacobus: i don´t hear any music (?)
    Mickorod Renard: nor me

SophiaSharon Larnia: yes its coming from the big red thing to my avi left
    SophiaSharon Larnia: oops right
arabella Ella: not sure i understand what red thing?
Bertram Jacobus: ah okay. now i hear ... strange ... :o)
    Bertram Jacobus: behind you ara
arabella Ella: oh yes now i see it
arabella Ella: like a big red box
SophiaSharon Larnia: ah ok Sl stranger and stranger ;p
    arabella Ella: weird
arabella Ella: shall we all go explore?
Mickorod Renard: I dont see it
    arabella Ella: :)
SophiaSharon Larnia: it is a head
    SophiaSharon Larnia: saw enough! laughs
Bertram Jacobus: behind you mick. may be 20 meters or so
    Mickorod Renard: spooky
arabella Ella: behind the pillar a bit way into the lawn
arabella Ella: behind first plant too
    Mickorod Renard: I see now
Mickorod Renard: cant hear music though
Hana Furlough: i can see it
arabella Ella: neither can i hear anything
Bertram Jacobus: when you go with the camera close to it you can hear mick
    Bertram Jacobus: and ara
Mickorod Renard: I tried that Bert
SophiaSharon Larnia: it can be returned, if you want
Bertram Jacobus: it´s not very loud
Bertram Jacobus: would be good i think. the owner is 1 day "old"
SophiaSharon Larnia: ohh now it makes sense
    Mickorod Renard: lol,,yes good idea
Bertram Jacobus: but why could he leave or put it here ?
Bertram Jacobus: isn´t it a forbidden region to put or leave things ?
Mickorod Renard: yes I thought so
Mickorod Renard: but appears we cant remove it either
SophiaSharon Larnia: nah Bertram, autoreturn in disabled here
    SophiaSharon Larnia: is*
    Mickorod Renard: no worries
SophiaSharon Larnia: if that were the case a lot would poof, including the recorders I think lol
Mickorod Renard: so,,has anyone any interesting topics?
arabella Ella: what was that pink stork?
    Hana Furlough: eeek battery out
    arabella Ella: pooooofffff gone
Bertram Jacobus: it was mine to test whether one can put things here ara ... ;-)
    Mickorod Renard: he he
arabella Ella: cool pink flamengo Bert
    arabella Ella: :)
    arabella Ella: ty Bert :)
Bertram Jacobus: copy and trans - here you are ara :-)
    arabella Ella: :)
Bertram Jacobus: np at all. so easy :-)
    Mickorod Renard: ok
    SophiaSharon Larnia: okies
Bertram Jacobus: to make gifts here ...
SophiaSharon Larnia: so Mickorod, I do have a question I meant to ask you
Mickorod Renard: I wonder when Pema will start the new phenemology group
    Mickorod Renard: ok Sophia
    Mickorod Renard: fire away
SophiaSharon Larnia: you work with children right?
SophiaSharon Larnia: how do you hold a center of quiet in the noise? ;p
SophiaSharon Larnia: have been working on it deliberately lol
Mickorod Renard: he he ,,not sure I understand exactly
SophiaSharon Larnia: you are exposed to rambuncious noise and play around you, does it effect your mood, can you find a quiet place where it is quiet
Mickorod Renard: I am fortunate that in Design and technology the subject appears to be interesting enough to captivate the audience
Bertram Jacobus: which sort of audience is your audience mostly mick ? how old are they and so on ? :-)
Mickorod Renard: I find that there are two ways of looking at it,,one that I apply is that of I enjoy hearing them having fun
    SophiaSharon Larnia: :)
Mickorod Renard: they range from 11 to 18
arabella Ella: would you like to share your own experience on this topic SophiaSharon?
arabella Ella: i could share mine if you wish :)
    Mickorod Renard: ok Ara
SophiaSharon Larnia: at work is is quire chaotic, I practice meditation and stillness at home and have to start over everytime I come home from work
    SophiaSharon Larnia: please do
arabella Ella: well i find the noise only has a negative effect if one is very stressed or ill or perhaps in a bad mood
    SophiaSharon Larnia: (it gets tiring)
arabella Ella: then each sound is amplified
arabella Ella: otherwise one just takes it as a normal part of the environment
Mickorod Renard: the noise and mayhem at work only gives me a greater sense of relief when I drive home afterwards
arabella Ella: yes it is a relief to get home to peace and quiet
Mickorod Renard: yes, focus on the enjoyment of the two extremes
    arabella Ella nods
Mickorod Renard: strangely the silence of some classes leave me more disturbed
    arabella Ella: :)
SophiaSharon Larnia: its hard to find the positive sometimes, to appreciate that, and to appreciate all of it
    arabella Ella: yes
Mickorod Renard: I have a feeling that my presence creates a certain activity that I see as productive
arabella Ella: i know what you mean SophiaSharon
    SophiaSharon Larnia: smiles
    SophiaSharon Larnia: (i'm sure Mick!)
    Mickorod Renard: he he
arabella Ella: sometimes one takes the noise in one's stride, sometimes it is more difficult to do so
arabella Ella: difficult to say why
SophiaSharon Larnia: well, I can see the point Micl made, in working in that environemt, with young adults
SophiaSharon Larnia: Mick made, anyway, soory typos
Mickorod Renard: I have learnt to switch off in some cases from noise
    SophiaSharon Larnia: yes
arabella Ella: but it is weird ... why can we not always manage to switch off ... speaking for myself at least?
Mickorod Renard: proberbly due to being married for many years
    SophiaSharon Larnia: ha! :)
arabella Ella: there are times when i can focus with noise around, at others not
Bertram Jacobus: as you said before ara : because sometimes we are too stressed - speak from my experience ...
Mickorod Renard: some are aggravating noises, this is true
SophiaSharon Larnia: the best I can manage is a bell jar type effect, vbeing detached
    arabella Ella: yes
arabella Ella: it's like ... if one is in a bit of a nervous mood ... then many things could trigger more nerves
SophiaSharon Larnia: but evey day is starting over :)
Mickorod Renard: I have a little office I can escape to,,and also there are chances to go into another classroon for a few minutes
    arabella Ella: yes
SophiaSharon Larnia: (hopes someone can fix my typos in the log, grimaces)
Mickorod Renard: just to compose onesself
Bertram Jacobus: nice if one knows methods and means ... :-)
Mickorod Renard: its handy if you can have a range of things available that can be used to break the focus of the noise of the kids,,like draw their attencion to a lil activity
    Mickorod Renard: Hi Gen
    SophiaSharon Larnia: brb :)
    Mickorod Renard: ok
arabella Ella: but ... it also makes a difference if one is running the class oneself or someone else is doing so i find
arabella Ella: one's own class noise is ok
Mickorod Renard: I think some are under pressure that the boss will walk in and think that its not acceptable
    arabella Ella: maybe
Bertram Jacobus: so many aspects ! ...
arabella Ella: but today that is the attitude of few people
    arabella Ella: not many
    arabella Ella: not majority
Mickorod Renard: again, its something like being too self concious
    arabella Ella: yes
Mickorod Renard: I was worried that kids would find things to take advantage of, like what your tie looked like or if you had a bogy in your nose

    More on the retreat

Mickorod Renard: Gen,,how was the retreat?
    Mickorod Renard: u enjoy?
genesis Zhangsun: really wonderful, oh yes I enjoyed it quite a bit
    Mickorod Renard: fantastic
Mickorod Renard: how many have you been on now?
genesis Zhangsun: well I suppose this is the first official retreat, we had a meeting in Princeton last year but it was only a couple of days
    Mickorod Renard: ok great
Mickorod Renard: and was it a shock to see people in the flesh?
Mickorod Renard: like avi's in the flesh
genesis Zhangsun: surprisingly not surprising :)
    Mickorod Renard: nice
genesis Zhangsun: somehow the av and the person seem to blend together quite seamlessly
genesis Zhangsun: at least for me
Mickorod Renard: I have heard that said before
SophiaSharon Larnia: I've been so curious as to what kind of exercises were explored, and haven't heard much about them :)
    Mickorod Renard: me too
    arabella Ella: me too
genesis Zhangsun: I think this week guardians who attended the retreat will be sharing their experiences during their sessions
    SophiaSharon Larnia: smiles
genesis Zhangsun: many will also be writing short reports
    genesis Zhangsun: including myself
Mickorod Renard: stragely we asked Stim yesterday but he seemed quiet
arabella Ella: were you a large group gen?
arabella Ella: and did it all live up to your expectations?
    arabella Ella: or surpass them?
genesis Zhangsun: the group was 12 in total including me, Pema, and Stim
Mickorod Renard: thats a nice number
    arabella Ella: fantastic
genesis Zhangsun: I was careful in a way not to have too many expetactions as we often know they can be distracting :)
    arabella Ella nods
    Mickorod Renard: yes
    SophiaSharon Larnia: nods
genesis Zhangsun: so it neither met them nor surpassed them but I know what you mean by what you are asking
genesis Zhangsun: I was really going with the flow, I guess that is something easier to do in a retreat context
    arabella Ella: yes of course
genesis Zhangsun: letting one thing flow into the next
Mickorod Renard: do you think it may be too formal?
arabella Ella: was Storm there too?
genesis Zhangsun: yes he was there too
    arabella Ella: :)
genesis Zhangsun: what a presence Storm has
    arabella Ella: no doubt
genesis Zhangsun: perhaps that is something I would say I wasn't entirely

    prepared for
genesis Zhangsun: he seemed larger than life :)
arabella Ella: he has quite a presence here too
    Mickorod Renard: wow
arabella Ella: and you dont only mean physical do you?
Mickorod Renard: I guess he is still in homymoon mode to some extent too
    Mickorod Renard: honeymoon*
genesis Zhangsun: oh yes he was in a fantastic mood, completely in love
    Mickorod Renard: wow
genesis Zhangsun: but I would have to say I guess it was interesting to note how expansive the presence of all of the guardians felt in RL
genesis Zhangsun: a very special group of people
    arabella Ella: yes
genesis Zhangsun: both those who were able to make it and those who could not
    Mickorod Renard: yes
arabella Ella: did you discuss the possibility of a next retreat?
genesis Zhangsun: a special community in general
genesis Zhangsun: yes we did a little...I think you will be happy to hear that Pema has his eyes set on Malta
Mickorod Renard: maybe we need a commune Ara..he he
    Mickorod Renard: Malta,,wow
    Bertram Jacobus: :-))
    arabella Ella: cool
    arabella Ella: why not
arabella Ella: i would be happy to welcome you all here
Yakuzza Lethecus: good for you ara :)
Mickorod Renard: cheap Ryan air flights to Malta for me
genesis Zhangsun: yes we thought we should give the Europeans a chance

    to gather!
    arabella Ella: brilliant
genesis Zhangsun: California is a bit far for some of you
    Bertram Jacobus: sadly
    arabella Ella nods
Mickorod Renard: yes, I was so tempted,,looked at flights
arabella Ella: more than the distance it is also the cost of flights and limited

    budgets too :)
Mickorod Renard: I suspected that had I took the plunge my wife would

have divorced me as she thinks SL is mad anyway
arabella Ella: but at least you had two europeans, Pema and Storm
    genesis Zhangsun: yes and Lia
arabella Ella: oh is Lia European?
