The Guardian for this meeting was Eliza Madrigal, grabbing the log for Pema Pera, whose session (in his Japan time zone) fell on his birthday! As did many balloons, but not quite as many as I'd intended. :) Eden's sign, cake, and champagne worked just fine. ;-)

Due to not being sure if Pema would want *much* hoopla, as Eden said, there was spontaneous hoopla instead, so Eden, Dream, Hana, Pila, Ewan, and I all got to say "Happy Birthday and Thanks" from ourselves, but also the whole group, to someone so dear to all of us.

Also, it was a wise and lovely session in general. Thanks to Pila for middle photo, and to Alfred for converting a wonderful picture taken by Eden. :)

    Eliza Madrigal: WOWeden gown_001.jpg
Eliza Madrigal: What a gorgeous dress, Eden
Eden Haiku: blushing... Good evening Eliza!
Eliza Madrigal: you're in an edening gown :)
    Eden Haiku: hehe
    --BELL--
Eden Haiku: You are still rezzing for me
    Eliza Madrigal beaming :))
Eliza Madrigal: I'm in a very simple outfit tonight... was fancier earlier but switched viewers and they put me back like this
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Ewan :)
    Ewan Bonham: Hi Eliza!
Eliza Madrigal: if Pema forgets we'll still celebrate, hah
    Eden Haiku: hello Ewan :)
Eliza Madrigal goes through her outfits looking for something fancy....

Oops.. too late to change. Pema arrives...

     happy birthday Pema.jpg

Eliza Madrigal grins :) Hi Pema
Pema Pera: Hi Ewan, Eden, Eliza!
    Eden Haiku: Hi Pema!
Ewan Bonham: Hi Eden and Pema
Eliza Madrigal: We think it is someone's birthday...
    Pema Pera: hehehehe
Pema Pera wondering who that could me
Pema Pera checking his profile . . .
Eden Haiku: Who that could you? hehe
    Eliza Madrigal laughs...
Pema Pera: March 21, not me
Eliza Madrigal: or maybe your wallet?
    Pema Pera: hi Dream!
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Dream :)
    Dream Wrexan: hI, everyone
    Eliza Madrigal: haha
    Ewan Bonham: Hi Dream
Eliza Madrigal: Well if it isn't, it is now I think...
Pema Pera: my wallet is far away . . . I'm sitting in informal kimono at the kitchen table, Sunday morning
    Pema Pera: hi Hana!
Eden Haiku: Hi Dream, Hana :))
    Hana Furlough: Hi everyone
Eliza Madrigal is not typing... grr
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Hana :)
    Hana Furlough: wow
    Hana Furlough: and お誕生日おめでとう!
    Eliza Madrigal smiles
    Hana Furlough: nice cake
    Dream Wrexan: ??
    Pema Pera: どうも有り難う
    Eden Haiku: お誕生日おめでとう! too :)
Hana Furlough: haha yes : )
    Pema Pera: hahaha
Dream Wrexan wonders if she's going to have to pull out her translator
Pema Pera: we'll stick to English, Dream :-)
Eliza Madrigal is making up her own story line...
Pema Pera: I met Hana in RL in Tokyo, way back when
    Dream Wrexan: oh good
Pema Pera: so we sometimes lapse back
Hana Furlough: a dream within a dream
Dream Wrexan: oh! I see now it appears to be your birthday
Dream Wrexan: many happy returns, Pema (whatever that means)
Pema Pera again looking around in wonder
    Pema Pera: hahahaha

Eden Haiku: Time presenting us with the appearance of pema's birthday

    Pema Pera: oooohhh
    Dream Wrexan: pilates anyone?
    Pema Pera: how sweet
Hana Furlough: wow is that confetti?
Eliza Madrigal: Hana just said something like "Hey, what's that above our heads?" except that the balloons won't work on cue....
Eliza Madrigal: supposed to be slightly more dramatic
Pema Pera: now THAT was dramatic!
Eliza Madrigal: ah, like that :))
    Dream Wrexan: woo hoo!
Hana Furlough: wow that is the coolest!
    Pema Pera: what fun!
    Eliza Madrigal: very silly....
Hana Furlough: oh no i want them to come back

    pab pema party.jpg
Eliza Madrigal: this is probably why you don't announce birthdays...
    Hana Furlough: lol!
Dream Wrexan: reminds me of the panic attack I had one New Years' Eve - thought I was going to suffocate in balloons
    Pema Pera: hehehehe
    Hana Furlough: lol, dream!
Dream Wrexan: Hana - I'm serious!
Pema Pera: that sounds pretty awful, Dream!
Eden Haiku: Love the sounds of the balloons popping up!
    Dream Wrexan: it was
Hana Furlough: oh sorry.... i can imagine that might be frightening
Pema Pera quickly switching on sound
    Pema Pera: hehehe
    Dream Wrexan: lol
Dream Wrexan: much safer in SL
Pema Pera: sounds like tap dancing
Dream Wrexan: I wonder if Fred Astair's around somewhere
Eliza Madrigal: This wonderful gadget has its own mind... not sure why they are disappearing so fast, should stay
Dream Wrexan: If I had known - I would have come more formal
    Eliza Madrigal: :))
    Hana Furlough: me too
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Pila
    Pila Mulligan: greetings
    Hana Furlough: hi there pila
    Dream Wrexan: :-) Pila
Pila Mulligan: Pema, I'd love to hear about your trip to China, when the time is right
    Eden Haiku: Hello Pila :)
    Pema Pera: hi Pila!
Eliza Madrigal: sorry... my avatar keeps typing without me
    Pema Pera: (*^_^*)
    --BELL--
    Ewan Bonham: Hi Pila
Dream Wrexan: I knew I was hanging on to these party froofroo's for something (sorry, they're "no transfer")
    Pema Pera: :-)
Eden Haiku: Happy birthday Pema! Cheers!
Eliza Madrigal: Happy Birthday Pema :))
    Dream Wrexan: hear hear
    Eliza Madrigal: :::toasts::::
Pema Pera: thank you all, I'm really touched m(._.)m
    Hana Furlough: 生日快乐!
Eden Haiku: Santé on this Sunday morning in Kyoto!!!
    Ewan Bonham: ToASTS AND CELEBRATION!
Dream Wrexan: hmmm... now that reminds me of RHP
    Pila Mulligan: hauoli la hanau
Dream Wrexan: (Rocky Horror Picture Show)
    Pema Pera: :-)
    Dream Wrexan throws toast
Pila Mulligan just noticed the party :)
    Eliza Madrigal: hah
    Eliza Madrigal: very perceptive Pila...
Pila Mulligan: avi was looking forward, as an excuse

Eliza Madrigal: :) So Pema, you are on the spot, officially... any birthday reflections? :)
Pema Pera: (it took me a while too to see the sign behind me :-)
    Pema Pera: hahaha, ooooh hmmmmm
Pema Pera getting shy and speechless
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Dream Wrexan: have another punch :0)
    Eden Haiku: hehe
    Eden Haiku: Didm
Pema Pera: actually, the big birthday will come up two years from now
Dream Wrexan: wow - you're typing 1 handed, Pema
Eden Haiku: Didn't have time to read the new chapter on Time yet, but would enjoy a birthday speech!
    Pema Pera: when I will turn 60 . . . .
Pema Pera: when the Chinese elements and zodiac signs align again for the first time since my birth
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    Eden Haiku: Oh!

Dream Wrexan: Does that happen every 60 years?

Pema Pera: water dragon once again
Pema Pera: yes, with 5 elements and 12 signs
Hana Furlough: that's a big bday in japan ^_^

    Eliza Madrigal: Interesting...
    Ewan Bonham: hmmm...
Pema Pera: in both China and Japan a big thing to celebrate
Pema Pera: it has a special name, kanreki, 還暦

Hana Furlough: wow a fantastic looking moth just flew in from outside
Eden Haiku: A birthday messenger maybe Hana?
    Eliza Madrigal: auspicious moth...
    Hana Furlough: so its seems
Hana Furlough: he's a beautiful pale yellow
Hana Furlough: the color of chardonnay
    Eliza Madrigal: :)

Pila Mulligan: "The key to the Dragon personality is that Dragons are the free spirits of the Zodiac. Conformation is a Dragon's curse. Rules and regulations are made for other people. Restrictions blow out the creative spark that is ready to flame into life. Dragons must be free and uninhibited."

Ewan Bonham: Could that be a Totem?

Pila Mulligan: notes flying into flame
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Pema Pera: sounds good to me, Pila :-)
    Hana Furlough: hehehe
Dream Wrexan: Moths are nocturnal, and much of their symbolism deals with: •Intuition •Psychic perception •Heightened awareness
    Dream Wrexan: per Google
Hana Furlough: sounds about right this day
    Pema Pera: :)
    Ewan Bonham: Intuition and perception....

Pema Pera scraping his throat to make mini-speech: just happy to see you all here, and to share this space and this Play as Being activity for year after year, day after day, 6 hours after 6 hours, that's a real miracle . . . end of speech (^_^)

Dream Wrexan: Blessed are the brief... for they will be invited to speak again
    Ewan Bonham: Yes, Miracles..

    --BELL--

Eliza Madrigal: Thank you Pema, we're deeply grateful for this space
Pila Mulligan: is there any logged chat material yet about your visit China, Pema? (not to seem stubborn:)
    Eliza Madrigal: haha Pila
Eden Haiku: Yes, a miracle, I agree Pema! ! And you initiated it :) Quite an accomplishment!
Pema Pera: haha Dream, that's perfect!
Hana Furlough: yes, thank you, pema!
    Eden Haiku: **********Applause!!**********
Pema Pera: don't remember now, Pila
    Eliza Madrigal: **********Applause!!**********
    Eliza Madrigal: **********Applause!!**********
    Pema Pera: ooohhh
    Hana Furlough: 拍手!
Dream Wrexan: I appreciate this space also - thank you
    Hana Furlough: one hand clapping!
    Eliza Madrigal: !
    Pema Pera: hahaha!
Dream Wrexan: I always wondered what that would sound like :-D
Ewan Bonham: And the space w give each other here..
    Pema Pera: yes!
    Eden Haiku: Koan clapping crowd...
Dream Wrexan: The space of 'being' with each other is magical
Ewan Bonham: And the 'play' of it...
Pema Pera: each moment is magical . . . so easy to forget
Hana Furlough: all too easy, sadly
Pema Pera: and each moment brings a new opportunity
Pema Pera: also so easy to overlook and just continue in our tracks

Pema Pera: that's perhaps why there are celebrations, to punctuate time
    Dream Wrexan: milestones
    Eliza Madrigal: mmm
Pema Pera: like we hyper-punctuate with our 9-sec celebrations every 15 minutes :)
Ewan Bonham: To fall back into our habits..

Pema Pera: we must be the most celebratory bunch in town . . . .
Pema Pera: celebrating our collective birth-quarter-of-an-hour each time!

Eliza Madrigal: Surely. We allow ourselves to play... constant permission...
    Hana Furlough: haha yes!
Eden Haiku: Constant permission to play, yes, love that!
    Ewan Bonham: Yes, a rebirth...
Pema Pera: but it's such a challenge to remain open all the time . . .
    Eden Haiku: Wow!
    Dream Wrexan: incoming!
Pema Pera: so we need those reminders --- hehehe, talking about reminders

Eliza Madrigal: I just love that this says "PREPARING TO DROP"
Pema Pera: perhaps Eliza has just invented a more striking alternative to announce the 90-sec pause here!
Eliza Madrigal: Seems so appropriate... hehe
    Dream Wrexan: LOL, Pema
    Eden Haiku: :))
    Hana Furlough: lol totally
Pema Pera: more obvious than the pond mistifying
    Hana Furlough: giggles
Eliza Madrigal: well we were discussing births and rebirths... then realizing that the balloons are pastels... hehe
    Ewan Bonham: LOL...
Eden Haiku: For baby Pema :)
    Hana Furlough: ahhh got it
    Eliza Madrigal giggles
    Pema Pera: hehehe
Eden Haiku: With a fresh outlook on sheer appearances
Pema Pera: I guess we grow old so as to learn to become open like a baby . . .
    Eliza Madrigal smiles
Ewan Bonham: Advance to the simple...

Pema Pera: I keep coming back to one simple text summarizing that openness -- from some Tibetan source, which was quoted at some point by Trungpa:

    Since all things are naked,
    clear and free from obscurations,
there is nothing to attain or realize.

    The everyday practice is simply
to develop a complete acceptance and openness
    to all situations and emotions.

    And to all people --
    experiencing everything totally without reservations
and blockages, so that one never withdraws or
    centralises onto oneself.

Hana Furlough: just a question, but does anyone ever find that this openness leaves one vulnerable?
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    Dream Wrexan: vulnerable to what?
    Eliza Madrigal: yes
    Pema Pera: definitely
    Eden Haiku: Beautiful quote Pema.
Hana Furlough: to hurt, to being caught off guard
Ewan Bonham: Hurt to me is a very illusive concept...

    --BELL--

Eden Haiku: 'So that one never withdraws' is kind of scary isn'it?

Dream Wrexan: I believe the goal is to accept all things
Eliza Madrigal: .. that one never withdraws into oneself... yes wonderful quote
Ewan Bonham: It has to do with my minds interpretation of when growth is invited into my life...
Eliza Madrigal: Definitely scary... some edge to aliveness....
Pila Mulligan: openness does make one vulnerable, Hana, yet it seems to take but a small drop of tonic to balance it ... to avoid being masochistic
Pema Pera: I can think of two answers, Hana; a common sense one:

"don't blindly open up, but remain aware of the whole situation"

an a radical one: "rather than rebuilding defenses to drop the I that feels vulnerable, drop the I instead"

Dream Wrexan: an edge - yes
Hana Furlough: to play devil's advocate (sort of): what if you don't know how to drop the "i"?
Eden Haiku: Birds fly by opening their wings then closing them, opening than closing...

Eliza Madrigal: you 'prepare to drop'? hhehe....
Hana Furlough: haha, nice, eliza : )
    Dream Wrexan: :-)

Pema Pera: you try, Hana, not blindly, but lovingly and trustingly yet carefully, and most of all, you find spiritual friends with whom to share experiences and advice -- as we are doing here

Eliza Madrigal remembering a phrase Pema used once that sometimes sneaks up on me... "Being always ready to approach"... was almost like a koan...
Hana Furlough: very nice pema and eliza
    Hana Furlough: : )
Hana Furlough: that feels less scary somehow

Pema Pera: each moment gives such an opportunity: each moment that you are sad or depressed or angry, you have an opportunity to drop that -- and that's halfway to dropping the I already, :-)
Pema Pera: you drop what you see and then you learn to see what you didn't yet see earlier

Hana Furlough: it's kind of amazing how much our experience is a performance of should's manufactured by us and those around us
Dream Wrexan: Looking through new eyes
    Eliza Madrigal: indeed Hana
Dream Wrexan: We live a great deal of our lives in the past
Ewan Bonham: So newness may reduce the feeling of 'hurt'..
Eliza Madrigal: freeing to see the construction...
Pema Pera: or allow you to look into the feeling of hurt, Ewan, perhaps even intensifying it, but finally seeing it for what it is
Hana Furlough: and what is that?
Pema Pera: no longer something to turn away from, making it worse and more scary and unapproachable
    Ewan Bonham: Yes...
Dream Wrexan: I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. (Frank Herbert)
Hana Furlough: but when you're looking, isn't it easy to latch on and forget to let go?

Pema Pera: that's where the challenge comes in to really see
Pema Pera: latching on means not seeing fully
Pema Pera: it's a replacement for seeing

Dream Wrexan: It helps me to remember that I can see things differently.
Eliza Madrigal: I remember someone passing away... several years ago, and another crying... Then a third person said to them "Oh, how beautiful that they mattered enough to let you feel that!"
Eliza Madrigal: it was a beautiful sadness... full of joy for having been vulnerably close
Eden Haiku: Yes, Eliza, that's moving.
Eden Haiku: Ready to approach and then lose.

Hana Furlough: i'm not sure what you mean, pema. can you say more?
Pema Pera: latching onto is an attempt to freeze time
    Hana Furlough: yes
Pema Pera: to put a great experience or sense of safety in the freezer
Pema Pera: or in your pocket
Pema Pera: real seeing is beyond time
Pema Pera: happens in the timeless now

Hana Furlough: but what if it's a negative emotion, like fear?
Hana Furlough: and it just keeps coming back

Pema Pera: that's a short summary and then we have to practice to learn what that really means :)
Hana Furlough: is that for safety?
Pema Pera: fear too you can look in the face
Pema Pera: not easy -- but not hard either -- just different from what we're used to
    Ewan Bonham: Yes...
Pema Pera: who knows why, Hana -- why questions typically don't help so much
    Eliza Madrigal: hmm
Pema Pera: a willingness to see is all it takes -- AND to be seen
Pema Pera: the two go together
Dream Wrexan: and on that note...
Dream Wrexan: happy birthday, Pema :-)

    --BELL--

Ewan Bonham: Yes...a gift that keeps on giving..:)
    Pila Mulligan: bye Dream :)
Pema Pera: bye Dream, thank you!
Hana Furlough: great seeing you dream
    Eden Haiku: Bye Dream :)

Pema Pera: I'll have to get going too -- and what a nice surprise, thank you so much, Eliza & all !!

Pila Mulligan: bye Pema, happy bday

Eliza Madrigal: but wasn't sure how Pema liked hoopla on his birthday
    Eliza Madrigal: heheh
Hana Furlough: that was really cool eliza
Eden Haiku: Yes, that was spontaneous El;iza :)
Eliza Madrigal: In your dress I cant tell if you are floating or standing or sitting, Eden :)
Eden Haiku: No idea why I'm floating...
Eliza Madrigal: neat facts concerning the water dragon...
Pila Mulligan: maybe the fabric elevates your avi
Eliza Madrigal: I always float when I drink champagne :)
    Hana Furlough: haha
    Eden Haiku: hhee
    Eliza Madrigal: Balloons and bubbles

Pila Mulligan: no ... that picture I saved to disk, so getting it out of SL was not a chore
    --BELL--
Pila Mulligan: your questin led to my looking at textures and I found this ...
Pila Mulligan: a Siberian Tiger at the county zoo
Eliza Madrigal: Oh, I remember this. Love this picture :))
    Pila Mulligan: cool tiger too
    Pila Mulligan: named Namaste
Pila Mulligan: someone once told me a way to get atexture out of SL, but I've forgotten
Eliza Madrigal: The Namaste Tiger :) Nice
