The Guardian for this meeting was Storm Nordwind. The comments are by Storm Nordwind. Alfred is there at the start of the session and comments on the small seating area (I'd narrowed it temporarily to eight cushions). Then I showed him the other seating and pool configurations.

    Storm Nordwind: You too!
Alfred Kelberry: wow! a tiny fountain? :)
Alfred Kelberry: never seen it before :)
Storm Nordwind: So tiny, you have to imagine the spray :)
Alfred Kelberry: it fits my tiny av :)
    Storm Nordwind: Indeed
Storm Nordwind: We try to make people feel welcome!
Alfred Kelberry: is it a new trick that you built?
Storm Nordwind: No. It's been like that for two years now
Alfred Kelberry: oh, funny... maybe all forgot about it :)
    Storm Nordwind: Watch...
    Alfred Kelberry: tada!
    Alfred Kelberry: oops
Alfred Kelberry: you'll get wet :)
    Alfred Kelberry: :)

Alfred comments on my email asking which parts of the Kira Cafe people use most. We talk about the Cafe for a while, where it might go and what constraints I'm working under.

Alfred Kelberry: i read your email about kira cafe
    Storm Nordwind: Good. Any comments?
Alfred Kelberry: um... i agree with most replies
Alfred Kelberry: fireplace is lovely :)
Alfred Kelberry: i'd like it to stay
Storm Nordwind: I think so too
Storm Nordwind: Yes. It's a worthwhile prim investment
Alfred Kelberry: will it be up in the air like now?
    Storm Nordwind: That's undecided
Storm Nordwind: It might be on the ground
Storm Nordwind: We'll see which works best
Alfred Kelberry: yes, you can make a trick to bring it up in case of a flood or something :)
    Storm Nordwind smiles
Storm Nordwind: It will be in the area in the next sim - diagonally to your right
Storm Nordwind: Where the yak and sundial are!
Alfred Kelberry: oh, i've only seen the pic :)
Storm Nordwind: Either on the ground or at 250m altitude like now
    Alfred Kelberry: i see
Storm Nordwind: I'm boxing up the shell at the moment so any move is easy
    --BELL--
Alfred Kelberry: boxing up a shell?
Storm Nordwind: The shell is the Cafe structure without any furniture or plants etc in it
Storm Nordwind: It's a big structure that you can't link together except in many bits
Storm Nordwind: So I'm using the Rez Faux technique for this one
    Alfred Kelberry: hmm, ok
Storm Nordwind: That means put scripts in all linked components and it packs away into a small box
Alfred Kelberry: there's a limit on how many prims you can link?
Storm Nordwind: Then you can take the box and rez the building anywhere
    Alfred Kelberry: neat :)
Storm Nordwind: yes - and how far apart they are
Alfred Kelberry: what are these limits?
    Alfred Kelberry: eliza! :)
Storm Nordwind: But not when it's boxed - provided everything is within shouting distance of the box (100m)
    Storm Nordwind: Good morning Eliza!
Eliza Madrigal: :) Hi Alfred, Storm
    Eliza Madrigal: talking limits, eh?
Alfred Kelberry: pushing more like it :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Dao!
    Dao Yheng: good morning!
Storm Nordwind: Yes. Just mentioning I was boxing up the shell of the new Cafe so I can rez it in different places
    Storm Nordwind: Good morning Dao
Eliza Madrigal: you are going to try it here and there...?
    Alfred Kelberry: bruce :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Free Bruce!
    Dao Yheng: Hi Bruce :)
Storm Nordwind: Probably not. Just the same place but at different altitudes

    We talk of Bruce's "liberation"!

    Storm Nordwind: Hi Bruce
Eliza Madrigal: Congratulations on your liberation Bruce, hehe
    Bruce Mowbray: Good morning, folks.
    Eliza Madrigal: Ah, I see
Alfred Kelberry: yes, good to see bruce :)
Alfred Kelberry: i hope io is feeling well too :)
Eliza Madrigal: Io is nice too...
    Bruce Mowbray: Thanks!
Bruce Mowbray listens for more from Storm about the Cafe.
Dao Yheng: How does it feel to be your "old" self?
Alfred Kelberry: bruce, what client did you use when bruce got frozen?
Bruce Mowbray: I was using Phoenix -- and yes it feels much better than catatonia, thanks.

And then we continue about the Cafe.

Eliza Madrigal: I'm sure however you figure it out, will work well Storm. You have a great sense about proportion, etc
Storm Nordwind: It's a question of how to fit 4000 prims into 1500! But I've saved 1100-1200 so far :)
Dao Yheng: Yes, it's really true
Bruce Mowbray: I agree with Eliza. . .
    Eliza Madrigal: wow, drastic...
Eliza Madrigal: but impressive that you've come that far
    Storm Nordwind: A day's work
Eliza Madrigal: It is one thing to get the angle right for yourself, but for everyone else... to create a shareable space...
    Eliza Madrigal: tricky :)
    Storm Nordwind: Yes
Storm Nordwind: Maintain the feel and what keep people coming back
Storm Nordwind: So the "shell" looks very much the same... unless you look at it very closely. The seating is the biggest headache - hence the email
Dao Yheng: I've visited another space where there are no seating arrangements -- amazing how difficult it is to get everyone into view when we're "standing around"
    Storm Nordwind: Yes Dao!
Eliza Madrigal: hm, yes harder to focus that way..
Storm Nordwind: I've also thought of providing more couches instead of individual chairs in the Lounge area
Storm Nordwind: One seats three, the other only one - but they are both the same(ish) prims - around 30 each
Eliza Madrigal: the lounge seating is fantastic... really *does* feel cozy, whether sofa or chair
Storm Nordwind: I looked all over SL for those chesterfields. Mostly the ones you can get are only average in cosy feel. These are only available in one place and not on any web site either, and they were a great find
    Dao Yheng: :) SL antiquing!
    Storm Nordwind chuckles
    Eliza Madrigal: hhaa
    --BELL--

Arch arrives and is concerned whether he has materialized on someone's lap. :)

    Eliza Madrigal: Morning Arch :)
    Storm Nordwind: Hi Arch
Archmage Atlantis: If I'm lucky, I'[m sitting on a free cushion, and not on someone's lap
Storm Nordwind: Doesn't that depend on the "someone"?
    Storm Nordwind chuckles
    Archmage Atlantis: Oh, let me rethinknk that :}
    Dao Yheng: :)
Eliza Madrigal: Bleu's idea for being puzzled is pretty timely, considering your project Storm :) My puzzle today is writing my 'time' homework...
Eliza Madrigal: It is a little the same question.... one's own angles and those useable by others...
    Eliza Madrigal: sharable :)
Archmage Atlantis: Hi, Alfred, Dao, Eliza, Storm....and the presence formerly known as Bruce

Dao talks about ideas that "cross over" - memes.

Dao Yheng: Eliza, does it ever amaze you how certain words and thoughts seem to "cross over" in these little SL chats?
    Eliza Madrigal: definitely!
Eliza Madrigal: like a wave that goes through...
    Storm Nordwind smiles
Dao Yheng: It might be a sideline, but I do wonder if that's part of the sharable question?
    Eliza Madrigal: hm... yes
Storm Nordwind: Perhaps as though ideas had an independent life of their own - like "an idea whose time has come" perhaps?
Eliza Madrigal: there is an idea that one can't 'control' what another hears, and I guess a sense of a larger pattern...?
Dao Yheng: or is part of the larger community / body?
Archmage Atlantis: Memes on the makle, sts
    Eliza Madrigal nods

What is the source of the discomfort some feel?

Dao Yheng: I wonder if a lot of the discomfort we feel when it seems like people are using different language or memes or thoughts is just a sort of fear about breaking that connectedness
Eliza Madrigal: that's an interesting idea..
Storm Nordwind: I hadn't thought of it that way before
Eliza Madrigal: of wanting to explore together...

    Maps.

Storm Nordwind: I think of it more as being in a new city without a map.
Eliza Madrigal: or with a vague map?
    Dao Yheng: oh, interesting Storm
Alfred Kelberry: that's how i usually start exploring a new city - i just walk :)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Storm Nordwind: I never feel as though I will break anything in the new city (!), but rather I won't really be able to function or to contribute much till I know my way around
Dao Yheng: but what if you don't feel like you have even the simplest mapping tools, like vision or a sense of front and back? Could get treacherous!
Storm Nordwind: Then you ask for help! If the place is worth staying, the natives are likely to be friendly! :)
    Dao Yheng: :)
Eliza Madrigal: yes, I usually have to see someone else playing out something....
Eliza Madrigal: guess that makes the other person a kind of map
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Storm Nordwind: Interactive maps are the best maps!
    Dao Yheng: :))
    --BELL--

Arch comments on the seating too.

Archmage Atlantis: Only you, as far as I know, have the power to shink the number of cushions in the circle, Storm.......I am curious why there are less here today.
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Storm Nordwind: All guardians (or those with a memory!) can do it
Storm Nordwind: I wasn't expecting many people today
Archmage Atlantis: Yes,k most guardians don't tho
Storm Nordwind: Many shrink the fountain. That's a favorite. But few play with the seats
Archmage Atlantis: And lately there is not always a guardian
Storm Nordwind: It resets to a pool and a high fountain 30 seconds after the last person leaves, so you'll usually find it like that
Alfred Kelberry: a lost knowledge that became a secret :)
    Archmage Atlantis: ty Alfred
Archmage Atlantis: I didn't know how to say that

Dao asks a personal question about my Buddhist teacher. How did I meet him?

Dao Yheng: Storm, I've been meaning to ask about your teacher, Gangteng Tulku
    Eliza Madrigal listens
    Storm Nordwind: Please do Dao
Dao Yheng: how did you meet him? and how did you know he was the one for you?
    Storm Nordwind: Interesting questions...
Storm Nordwind: First of all, I met him before I met him... so he was a factor in my life before I met him physically
Storm Nordwind: I was researching teachers, paths, schools...
Storm Nordwind: and one particular school - that had strong links to a teacher called Longchenpa - stood out
Storm Nordwind: So I was able to research in books, and also on the web...
Dao Yheng: Ah, so it started with Longchenpa?
Storm Nordwind: No - it started with a wider research - and influence from my existing teacher who does not have a physical presence (Kuan Yin)
    Dao Yheng: ok
Storm Nordwind: And then, one night after finishing a book on Pema Lingpa, I had a vision
Storm Nordwind: And in that vision Gangteng Rinpoche appeared and said simply to me, "You are my disciple" - and disappeared!
Storm Nordwind: Since he was visiting the US just 4 hours drive away a couple of months later, I had to see him :)
    Dao Yheng: of course!
    Eliza Madrigal: :))

How did the first meeting go?

Dao Yheng: and how was your first meeting with him?
Storm Nordwind: I felt a strong resonance. He is a clear and powerful teacher, and uses texts that I find work for me (Longchenpa). But he draws from his own experience too.
Storm Nordwind: He is a very practical person, and doesn't cloak things in mystique we so often find

Dao's impressions are, in my opinion, "spot on".

Dao Yheng: I downloaded some of his audios -- was really impressed with just the rhythm of his speech
    Storm Nordwind: Oh - wonderful!
Dao Yheng: and yes, straightforward -- honest
Storm Nordwind: He has also done more than most in making teaching accessible - especially for women in his home country
Storm Nordwind: Straightforward and honest - good descriptors :)
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, rhythm, then music, then song, then storytelling.......I had forgotten
    Dao Yheng: :)

    Offline study.

Storm Nordwind: He is just starting a shedra program - like a Buddhist university - for distant students. I have just enrolled
    Dao Yheng: interesting!
Alfred Kelberry: how does one get enrolled?
    --BELL--
Storm Nordwind: I guess Alfred, that in the first instance, one writes to the good people at http://www.yeshekhorlo.org/
    Archmage Atlantis: Alfie, practicing Kanji
    Dao Yheng: :)
Eliza Madrigal: huge but wonderful commitment Storm
Eliza Madrigal: Isn't it funny to find yourself across the world in such a timely way?
    Storm Nordwind smiles

    Being "spotted" by a teacher.

Dao Yheng: I wonder if many teachers have this ability to spot their students, or if it's a specialty for some? Maybe it wasn't "you are my disciple" but I definitely had the impression of being spotted while visiting Druk Yul L.... (can never remember how to spell the rest of it :)
    Storm Nordwind: Lhakhang ;)
Dao Yheng: (thanks! I was definitely going to butcher it with too many h's!)
    Eliza Madrigal: excellent question Dao
Storm Nordwind: I suspect so Dao. "When the student is ready, the master appears"
    Storm Nordwind chuckles
Eliza Madrigal: I've definitely had the sense at times, that someone was sort of stuck with me...
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Dao Yheng: We're all stuck on you, Eliza!
    Eliza Madrigal: hahaha
    Eliza Madrigal: (((Dao))))
Alfred Kelberry: i like that quote, stormy
Storm Nordwind: The ever modest and humble but enthusiastic and very talented Eliza! :)
Alfred Kelberry: she's also leggy :)
    Storm Nordwind laughs
Eliza Madrigal blushes... yes must be the legs :)

Does one need a particular teacher, or can one learn from anything? Can one do both?

Eliza Madrigal: and then there is an 'everything as guru' phenomonon
    Storm Nordwind nods
    Dao Yheng: Yes
Eliza Madrigal: So I wonder the difference... or if is a matter of times and seasons to some degree...
Eliza Madrigal: when 'teacher' appears, and how
Storm Nordwind: Yes. I wondered for a while whether I needed a physical teacher... but we're back to interactive maps being the best maps!
Archmage Atlantis: Straight guys, ou vey
Archmage Atlantis: Listen to the mind, ignore the body
Eliza Madrigal: yes... am greatly appreciative to teachers in my life and no doubt there is a focusing power there...
Eliza Madrigal: when I read Pema's time chapter he seemed to say 'no maps'...
Eliza Madrigal: but maybe I need to keep reading :)
Storm Nordwind: I'll not gainsay him!
Storm Nordwind: Maps are a comfort and a tool...
    Eliza Madrigal: yes
Storm Nordwind: but people sometimes confuse the map with the destination!
Eliza Madrigal: and sometimes there is an undeniable 'longing' for one's teacher...
Archmage Atlantis: Yes. maps are like silence and science, a tool
    Archmage Atlantis: a method
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Storm Nordwind: In the end, you have to use your legs - or find that you're already where you want to go!
    Eliza Madrigal smiles
Eliza Madrigal still pondering 'being spotted'... great phrase Dao

Arch inserts a wise thoughtful comment before we break up.

Archmage Atlantis: [inserts wise thoughtful comment here]
    Storm Nordwind: :)
    Eliza Madrigal: haha Arch
    Dao Yheng: :)
Archmage Atlantis: That's in the script
Archmage Atlantis: Didn't give me the comment
Eliza Madrigal: Thank you for a really interesting conversation
Dao Yheng: yes, thank you all
Storm Nordwind: Yes wonderful - thank you for all you bring to it Eliza
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, time is a reality in this existence...Blessings and Namaste
    --BELL--
Eliza Madrigal: Wish you clarity in building storm!
    Storm Nordwind: Thank you! :)
Eliza Madrigal: See WoKers later... Bye for now. Hugs :)
Dao Yheng: Thank you too, Storm, for letting me be nosey today!
Storm Nordwind: You're welcome. It's not something I usually talk about - I don't evangelize - but on the other hand I have nothing hide either!
    Dao Yheng: It's really wonderful!
    Dao Yheng: See you all!
Storm Nordwind: Bye for now :)
Storm Nordwind: Please excuse me Alfred - I have some building to do!
