Wol Euler was guardian for this session. Somebody came to the session who shouldn't have been here, and after a great deal of e-mail correspondence it was decided that we cannot record the names or the comments of such people even if they give permission.

    Wol Euler: hello egg
    eggsalad Ormstein: hi gang
    Wol Euler: hello egg, yaku
    Yakuzza Lethecus: good morning everyone
    Yakuzza Lethecus: morning agatha!
    Wol Euler: good morning, aggers
    Agatha Macbeth: Guten Morgen :)
Wol Euler: you're on early today
    Wol Euler smiles at yaku
    eggsalad Ormstein: wie gehts?
Agatha Macbeth: Yeah, just having breakfast
    Agatha Macbeth: :)
Agatha Macbeth notes Yaku's aflac tambourine
    Alfred Kelberry: hi! :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Hiya Boxy :)
    Wol Euler: hello boxy
Yakuzza Lethecus: Sehr gut, in Deutschland bzw. wenigstens in der Region in der ich lebe haben wir sehr schönes Wetter und ich trinke meinen dritten Kaffee :)
Agatha Macbeth: And hello Rhiannon :)
    Wol Euler: :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: Hey boxy and rhi
    Wol Euler: hello rhi
Agatha Macbeth: Sehr gut Yak :)
    eggsalad Ormstein: rhia!!
Alfred Kelberry: um, guys, how about a little impromptu "jam"?
    Rhiannon Dragoone: hi Sage!
    Agatha Macbeth: Strawberry?
    Wol Euler: :)
Wol Euler: I've got the toast
    Agatha Macbeth: Good heavens
    Rhiannon Dragoone: hi eggs!
Alfred Kelberry: it's not me this time :)
    Alfred Kelberry: my uncle
    Yakuzza Lethecus: yay boxy :)
Rhiannon Dragoone: boxy, are you in voice?
Agatha Macbeth: I never knew you couldn't play the guitar Alf
    Agatha Macbeth: :p
Wol Euler wonders what's going on
Agatha Macbeth: This must be a leftover from last night
    Yakuzza Lethecus: ***** APPPPPPPLLLLAAAUUUSSSSeeee***********
    Alfred Kelberry: :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Yay, Alfie!
    Agatha Macbeth: ***** APPPPPPPLLLLAAAUUUSSSSeeee***********
    Agatha Macbeth: clap
Alfred Kelberry: uncle is the one who taught me :)
Alfred Kelberry: yet, it's all him now
Agatha Macbeth: Just don't give up programming :p
    eggsalad Ormstein: hi box
    Yakuzza Lethecus: great :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Sweet
Agatha Macbeth: Sun would be proud of you
Yakuzza Lethecus: a lot better then i can play but it shouldn't stop me trying :)
Alfred Kelberry: he's at my place jamming so i thought i'd share a little :)
    Agatha Macbeth smiles
Alfred Kelberry: i like your guitar, yaku :)
Agatha Macbeth turns her RL radio back up
Wol Euler grins and does the same
    Agatha Macbeth: :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: well, i suck but it's interesting to follow the mind how motivation and demotivation runs for me related to the quality of contribution of other ppl

    --BELL--

Wol Euler: it's OK to suck when everyone else does too? :)
Agatha Macbeth: Well at least it's a level playing field then!
Yakuzza Lethecus: well, fear of appearance is a concern sometimes at least for me, knowing that some ppl just say "yay" and afterwards gossip how much someone sucked
Yakuzza Lethecus: to have been exposed to that kidn of gossip leaves its marks and have and influence
Wol Euler: haters hate, that is their small and sad kind of pleasure. It's not worth worrying about them.
    Agatha Macbeth: True
Yakuzza Lethecus: that didn't happen here, but these issue is propably a good subject
Yakuzza Lethecus: because i can't just overcome it
    Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: if we're being honest, I'm not free of it either :) rudeness hurts, sure.
Agatha Macbeth nods and strokes Wol's head
Alfred Kelberry: i like this quote: you can't fail completely :)
Agatha Macbeth: I need to poner that one
    Agatha Macbeth: +d
    Wol Euler: pwn it?
    Alfred Kelberry: :)
    Agatha Macbeth: not pawn it!
    Agatha Macbeth: Wouldn't fetch much
    Wol Euler nods.
Rhiannon Dragoone: Well, my karate instructor once said that anything worth doing is worth doing badly at first
Alfred Kelberry: also, there's always someone who doesn't like/approve of what you do
    Wol Euler laughs.
Wol Euler: the thing is to distinguish between criticism that is based in judgement and the desire to help improve ...
    Agatha Macbeth grins @ Rhi
Wol Euler: ... and rudeness which is based on the desire to hurt
    Agatha Macbeth: Exactly
Wol Euler: I've never yet met a hater who was interested in more than distributing pain
Agatha Macbeth: Constructive criticism can be instructive
Agatha Macbeth: And you learn more from being wrong than being right
    Wol Euler: absolutely
Wol Euler: as long as the wrongness is pointed out in a way that leaves you ... safe and comfortable to continue, let's say
    Agatha Macbeth: Yes
Wol Euler: how many people give up on maths (say) because a teacher says in a moment of exasperation "you'll never understand this"?
Agatha Macbeth: Quite a few I would imagine
Alfred Kelberry: never heard it from a teacher
    Wol Euler: lucky you
Wol Euler: you wer a good student, or you had good teachers
Rhiannon Dragoone: I make a good chunk of my living now from people who had math teachers like that
Agatha Macbeth: I think it's when you get the same thing wrong over and over that you give up
    Alfred Kelberry: rhia :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Ha
Rhiannon Dragoone: One of my students will not go for his GED because he still has that math teacher in his head
    Wol Euler nods.
Agatha Macbeth: People react to criticism in different ways
    Alfred Kelberry: *hugs woly*
Yakuzza Lethecus: well after my marks were bad for years i kind of did, well wonder how to replace the "timeframe of pityness" with construciveness
Wol Euler smiles and hugs back
Yakuzza Lethecus: i complain a lot about my math skills :P
Agatha Macbeth: Some learn from it, some just crumple, and some hit you! :PP
    Wol Euler: :)
    Alfred Kelberry: aga :)
    Alfred Kelberry: various perception
Rhiannon Dragoone: Aggers, What does not kill us makes us stronger? lol
    Agatha Macbeth: Truly :p
Alfred Kelberry: "timeframe of pityness" - i like that :)
    Wol Euler ponders.
Wol Euler: getting things wrong is not necessarily a problem, not evne time after time
Agatha Macbeth: By the way Rhi, are you up really late or really early?
Wol Euler: watch kids learning to skateboard, they fall off dozens of times. but they continue
Wol Euler: most of them, at least
    Agatha Macbeth nods
Wol Euler: perhaps because the community supports them in that?
Wol Euler: their community of fellow learning skaters
    Agatha Macbeth: Could be
    Agatha Macbeth: Or peer pressure?
Wol Euler: whereas there is no such community of struggling math students in school
Alfred Kelberry: yes, woly, it's an iterative process. doing is what counts.
Wol Euler: yes, perhaps either way. "Don'T be a quitter"
Wol Euler: the point that interested me was the continuing, boxy

    --BELL--

Wol Euler: people give up on school subjects because they fail once or twice
Wol Euler: but people "fail" to stay on a skateboard a hundred times a day, and still keep trying
    Wol Euler: why is that?
Rhiannon Dragoone: Aggers, up really late
Agatha Macbeth: Maybe many think intellectual persuits beyond them?
Rhiannon Dragoone: Well, I'm hearing a blame the victim attitude here
    Agatha Macbeth: Aww :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: well, with additional math teaching i had a community of failing and the successful ppl were always atteached to those who were constructive to bring them forward, i kind of fear community's in stuggeling sometimes
Rhiannon Dragoone: A lot of times, schools ruin people's learning; it's not their fault
Wol Euler: not from me you aren't, rhi.
    Wol Euler: agreed absolutely
Agatha Macbeth grins @ 'schools ruin peoples' learning'
Agatha Macbeth: 'When I think of all the crap I learned in high school' as Paul Simon said
Rhiannon Dragoone: "Don't be a quitter?" That implies someone who failed to learn gave up, when he may not have had the right encouragement
Wol Euler: wrong context, rhi. I was imagining that being said by one skater to anohter, to encourage her to stay on the board
Wol Euler: but it can be used as an insult, de haut en bas, sure.
Agatha Macbeth: positive as opposed to negative comment
    Wol Euler: right
    Wol Euler: "stay with us"
Alfred Kelberry: i think the problem at large is an attitude towards failure in our society. it's considered awful and you're labeled a loser if you fail. as if no one ever does.
    Wol Euler: exactly :)
    Agatha Macbeth nods
Rhiannon Dragoone: Well, maybe I am up too late. lol
Wol Euler: "[The brilliant mathematician Yutaka Taniyama] was gifted with the special ability of making many mistakes, mostly in the right direction. I envied him for this and tried in vain to imitate him, but found it quite difficult to make good mistakes."
Agatha Macbeth hands Rhi some coffee
    Agatha Macbeth: Nice, Wol :)
    Alfred Kelberry: :)
Wol Euler: Goro Shimura, talking about a colleague
Wol Euler: a great attitude to mistakes
    Alfred Kelberry: meep!
    Agatha Macbeth: Meep Meep ;P :p:P :p :P
    Wol Euler: :)
    Alfred Kelberry: meep said
Wol Euler: (note for the log: a flurry of sound effects)
Alfred Kelberry: imagine how many beautiful talents and inventions we never get to see due to this fear of failure
    Wol Euler nods.
Agatha Macbeth: Or songs, paintings and poems
    Wol Euler nods.
    Wol Euler: or friendships ...
    Agatha Macbeth: Yes
    Agatha Macbeth: Or relationships
Alfred Kelberry: one recent example is a guy who wrote a plugin to a major library and quietly mentioned "i made a little plugin, but i'm sure it's horrific". i said let us see! and guess what? it was packaged and included to the extensions pool.
    Wol Euler smiles.
Agatha Macbeth: I seem to be unusually philisophical first thing in the morning :p
Wol Euler: we should get you up early more often :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Hmm
Wol Euler chuckles and hands you another coffee
    Alfred Kelberry: aga girl :)
Agatha Macbeth: There ya go Alf
    Alfred Kelberry: someone's talking
    Alfred Kelberry: ah, yaku!
Agatha Macbeth: I see green lines over Yaku's head :)
    Alfred Kelberry: lovely
    Alfred Kelberry: aga :)
Agatha Macbeth: Do I hear a guitar?
    Agatha Macbeth: Yay
Alfred Kelberry: yes, you do :)
Agatha Macbeth: Sry, had to turn vol up
    Alfred Kelberry: tap tap tap
Agatha Macbeth: I like the way Yaku's lips move when he plays
    Alfred Kelberry: haha
    Agatha Macbeth: Nice
Yakuzza Lethecus: well i need more playfulness with all the things i guess we are all maybe our worst enemys
Alfred Kelberry: i really like live music in sl... one that comes up suddenly. arises in the moment :)
Agatha Macbeth: Maybe we should get Gaya to play her piano again :)

    --BELL--

    Yakuzza Lethecus: █████
Alfred Kelberry: yaku, i think you're right
    Wol Euler: █████
    Agatha Macbeth: █████
Alfred Kelberry: gah! i never heard gaya playing!
Yakuzza Lethecus: right, i was amazed when i heard her, only her microfone was a little bit bad but the playing was really nice
Alfred Kelberry: that would be lovely
    Alfred Kelberry: █████
Agatha Macbeth: She was wonderful Alf
    Alfred Kelberry: aww
    Alfred Kelberry: :(
Alfred Kelberry: we should really ask her nicely to play on the music session :)
Agatha Macbeth: She said 'I sound rusty', but she was brilliant

    Wol Euler smiles.
    Agatha Macbeth does likewise
    Alfred Kelberry: :)
    Wol Euler grins.
    Agatha Macbeth: Stereo stroking
    Wol Euler: mmmmmmm
    Alfred Kelberry: 3d :)
    Agatha Macbeth: As well
Alfred Kelberry: i haven't seen 3d (the av) for so long
    Wol Euler: not in ages.
Wol Euler: not even at the birthday celebration, I realize
Agatha Macbeth: Think he's on open sim now
    Wol Euler: nor ade
Alfred Kelberry: i hope he's well
Wol Euler: yeah, they spend their time building opensims
Alfred Kelberry: do you know where?
Wol Euler: no, but I'm sure it would easy enough to find out
    Wol Euler: check their profiles
    Alfred Kelberry: ah
Alfred Kelberry: what's his full name? :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: i got to eat something, really nice this morning! take care everyone

Agatha Macbeth: It's an interesting subject

    --BELL--

Agatha Macbeth: AIRC - avatar identity research group
    Alfred Kelberry: ah
Agatha Macbeth: (i think Wol's reading)
    Wol Euler: sorry :)
Wol Euler: got sidetracked onto wikipedia
    Agatha Macbeth: :)
    Wol Euler sighs
Agatha Macbeth: I know you too well dear
Wol Euler: it's a black hole for attention
    Agatha Macbeth agrees
Agatha Macbeth: But as someone who reads labels on sauce bottles, I can't say too much
    Wol Euler: heheheheh
Wol Euler: readers read, that's what tehy do
    Agatha Macbeth: Indeed
Wol Euler: one of my father's favourite stories is seeing me, age 13 or so, reading my mother's knitting pattern while tying my shoelaces :)
    Agatha Macbeth: :)))
Wol Euler: they're like lists of chess moves
    █████: █████
    Wol Euler: m3 p4 d1 m17 p1 m5
Agatha Macbeth: I was gonna say: read a knitting pattern?

    Wol Euler: postcrastination :)
Agatha Macbeth: That's why i never learned the piano
Wol Euler: or "anticrastination" perhaps :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Well, something-crastination
    Wol Euler nods.
    Alfred Kelberry: hi :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Hi who?
    Agatha Macbeth: Silver
    Wol Euler: away!
    Wol Euler laughs.
Wol Euler: oh, we are so close.
    Agatha Macbeth: Music plays
    Alfred Kelberry: silver platter
    Alfred Kelberry: *rubs his nose*
Wol Euler rubs boxy's nose too

    Alfred Kelberry: hi, Visitor
Alfred Kelberry: please join us :)
Alfred Kelberry: aga doesn't bite :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Hello Visitor
    Agatha Macbeth: I don't?
    Alfred Kelberry: um, sometimes :)
Wol Euler: hello Visitor, have you beeen here before?
    Visitor: no

    --BELL--

    Visitor takes a humble bow
Alfred Kelberry: welcome to play as being then! :)
    Visitor: ty
Alfred Kelberry: 3 years in sl
    Visitor: why is it recorded?
Alfred Kelberry: um... some can't make it and read it online
    Visitor: oh
Agatha Macbeth: We keep a record so members who can't be here can read up later Visitor
    Wol Euler nods.
Alfred Kelberry: continuity of sort, i think
Wol Euler: may we have your permission to include your SL name and your comments in the published log?
Visitor: what is the bell about?
Wol Euler: [02:14] Play as Being 15 minute bell: Please observe 90 seconds of silence.
    Wol Euler: :)
    Visitor: i dunno yet
Wol Euler: in theory we pause for 90 seconds to practice whatever we had been talking about earler
Alfred Kelberry: the bell reminds us of our senses :)
    Visitor: practice?
Wol Euler: but we sometimes talk through it, e.g. if somebody new arrives and needs an introduction
    Visitor: ty
Alfred Kelberry: others than typing :)
Agatha Macbeth: If you don't want your name to appear in the log Visitor, we can edit it out..
    Visitor: i am a visitor
    Agatha Macbeth nods
Agatha Macbeth: Yes, we can refer to you as 'visitor' if you wish
    Visitor: k
    Wol Euler makes a note
    Visitor: ty
Agatha Macbeth: It's ok, not everyone who comes here wants to be recorded, and that's understandable :)

    Visitor takes a humble bow
Alfred Kelberry: you guys have fun
Agatha Macbeth: Ok, thanks for dropping by :)
    Visitor: ty
Wol Euler: btw, Visitor, before you go
Agatha Macbeth: Take care Boxy, program well
Alfred Kelberry: aga, you talk like woly :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Indeed :)
Wol Euler: if you come back, and people ask whether you've been here before: since you are returning, they will assume that you agree to be named in the log.
Alfred Kelberry: but she says "fold well" :)
Wol Euler: you must tell them if you want to be kept anonymous
    Agatha Macbeth smiles
    Agatha Macbeth nods
    Visitor: ty
Wol Euler: yw, enjoy the weekend
    Agatha Macbeth waves
Alfred Kelberry: ok, you then... sit well :)

Wol Euler: he must be waiting at the cemetery gates
    Agatha Macbeth: ??
Wol Euler: on a sunny day like this
    Wol Euler: the smifs
    Agatha Macbeth: Aww
    Agatha Macbeth slaps you
    Wol Euler giggles.
Agatha Macbeth: Heaven knows I'm miserable now
    Wol Euler: awwwww
    Wol Euler hugs you
    Agatha Macbeth smiles happily
    Agatha Macbeth: Fracture tonight?
    Wol Euler: yep!
Agatha Macbeth: Hopefully more there this week
Wol Euler: yeah, last was a little slow
Wol Euler: wave of particles :)
    Wol Euler: low tide
    Agatha Macbeth: Yep

    --BELL--

    Wol Euler: all right, shoppingtime!
    Agatha Macbeth: Mm
Wol Euler: see you later, aggers. enjoy your saturday
Agatha Macbeth: Get something nice for dinner :)
