2011.04.15 19:00 - Human beings, not human doers

The Guardian for this meeting was Sylectra Darwin. The comments are by Sylectra Darwin.

    Hokon Cazalet: hiya =)
Hokon Cazalet: im not sure if we've met before
    Sylectra Darwin: How are you?
Sylectra Darwin: You seem new to me. I was a guardian a long time ago
Hokon Cazalet: im doing pretty well today, quite groggy though (overslept)
Sylectra Darwin: Oh I hate that.
Hokon Cazalet: oh ok, im sorta new, i was here a bit last year on and off, but im becoming a regular this week
    Hokon Cazalet: yeah me too
    Sylectra Darwin: Cool!
    Hokon Cazalet: hi lucinda =)
Sylectra Darwin: Well, glad to meet you.
    Hokon Cazalet: you too =)
    Sylectra Darwin: Hey Luc...
    Lucinda Lavender: hiya:0
Lucinda Lavender: well not O really just )
    Sylectra Darwin: What's new?
    Lucinda Lavender: well dinner cooks
    Hokon Cazalet: mine too
Lucinda Lavender: and excitement is in the air
Lucinda Lavender: dress reheasal tomorrow morning for St Matthew Passion...
    Lucinda Lavender: rehearsal
    Hokon Cazalet: cool
    Sylectra Darwin: what's that?
Lucinda Lavender: A big piece by Bach that tells the Easter story
    Lucinda Lavender: gorgeous music
    Sylectra Darwin: wow
    Lucinda Lavender: concert sunday
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Sylectra Darwin: sounds really lovely
Lucinda Lavender: have been lucky to learn the music and sing a number of times...
Sylectra Darwin: Do either of you observe Good Friday?
Hokon Cazalet: oh cool =) no i dont
    Lucinda Lavender: no...
    Lucinda Lavender: ding!
    Hokon Cazalet: hehe
    Lucinda Lavender: feeling in tune
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Lucinda Lavender: do you observe it sylectra?
Sylectra Darwin: I once did, when I went to Methodist Church
Lucinda Lavender: ah...easter week is very busy time in chrches as I remember
    Hokon Cazalet: hi efuturist
Sylectra Darwin: The service was very dramatic, involving a retelling of the story of Christ's crucifixion. Timed for sunset, the service ended when the pastor walked out the front door with the only source of illumination - the Christ candle.
    Efuturist Daviau: Hello Friends
    Sylectra Darwin: Hi efuturist!
Sylectra Darwin: We were left in the dark. It was really powerful.
    Hokon Cazalet: cool sylectra
    Lucinda Lavender: wow...
    Lucinda Lavender: can imagine
    Lucinda Lavender: HI Efuturist:)
    Lucinda Lavender: welcome
Efuturist Daviau: Hello, may I sit with you?
Sylectra Darwin: The older I got the more I appreciated that service as opposed to Easter itself. The sadness seemed more authentic.
    Sylectra Darwin: Please do.
Sylectra Darwin: Have you joined a Play as Being gathering before?
    Efuturist Daviau: Thank you
Lucinda Lavender: nice to meet you:)
Efuturist Daviau: It is my first time
    Sylectra Darwin: Welcome!
Efuturist Daviau: Nice to meet you too.
Sylectra Darwin: Is it okay to include your comments in the chat log which we post to our wiki? http://wiki.playasbeing.org/
    Efuturist Daviau: Of course
    Sylectra Darwin: great, thanks
Sylectra Darwin: We meet several times a day here just to talk about lots of things, including meditation
Sylectra Darwin: No particular religious affiliation - just a bunch of people exploring ideas with open minds.
Efuturist Daviau: I feel welcome already.
Lucinda Lavender: and every 15 minutes there is a pause for 90 seconds:)
    Sylectra Darwin: Yes! Thanks Luc.
    Sylectra Darwin waves to Storm
Lucinda Lavender: a time to sit back and listen to silence...
    Lucinda Lavender: Hi Storm:)
    Storm Nordwind: Hi there!
    Sylectra Darwin: how are you?
    Storm Nordwind: Fine thank you!
Lucinda Lavender: we were just telling Efuturist about this place and its sessions...
    Efuturist Daviau: Hi Storm...
Storm Nordwind: Three years of sessions - every 6 hours!
Sylectra Darwin: Storm built a lot of this stuff you see around you...
    Lucinda Lavender: wow
    Efuturist Daviau: That is impressive
Storm Nordwind: Two and a half years on this site.
Lucinda Lavender: yep that was what I was going to say...
Storm Nordwind: And nearly every session recorded and published
Storm Nordwind: What on earth keeps us coming back here? ;-)
    Lucinda Lavender: :)))
    Sylectra Darwin: lol
Sylectra Darwin: Every conversation is different, of course.
Lucinda Lavender: well it seems real
    Hokon Cazalet: yup =)
Sylectra Darwin: This is the place that allows me to cross pollinate my ideas...zen mixes with the business world and various spiritual traditions
Storm Nordwind: But there are many places where people get together and talk in SL. What do you think makes this one different?
Lucinda Lavender: this is the place where I practise stepping back but in an organized and dependable way...a structure that allows for the pause.
Sylectra Darwin: We keep coming back to the 90 second breaks every 15 minutes
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Storm Nordwind: When we were first starting, 3 years ago, a whole bunch of us kept personal blogs describing out our experiences. We tried to practice the Play as Being 'exercises' for just 9 seconds every 15 minutes, and we wrote candidly about what we found.
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Hokon Cazalet: hi storm btw
Sylectra Darwin: A lot of you do longer meditation too, right?
Storm Nordwind: And we came here, or to one of our earlier venues, to share and discuss and try extensions of that 9 second practice.
Hokon Cazalet: i wish i meditated, the few times i do i get tons out of it
    Hokon Cazalet: brb food
    Sylectra Darwin: kk
Storm Nordwind: I think some people in Play as Being do do longer meditations. But i suspect many don't and never have.
Sylectra Darwin: I sit with the Quakers most Sundays and it's a silent worship.
    Efuturist Daviau: May I?
    Hokon Cazalet: back
Sylectra Darwin: May you what? :)
Storm Nordwind: You have a comment or a question? Please jump in!
    Sylectra Darwin: yes!
Efuturist Daviau: Ok thank you, I am new to this
Efuturist Daviau: Just today in fact, a friend and I were discussing just this. That we are so busy, we lose ourselves. We are in fact Human beings, not human doers.
    Storm Nordwind: Indeed so!
Efuturist Daviau: I am intrigued by Play as doing?
    Lucinda Lavender: yes!
    Sylectra Darwin nods
Efuturist Daviau: Am I on the right track?
    Hokon Cazalet: yup
    Storm Nordwind: Sure!
Storm Nordwind: We carry around so much baggage, we start to identify with it, I'm sure
Sylectra Darwin: I have been listening to Zencast speaker Gil Fronsdal talking about learning to be mindful. I love his stuff, he's very humble and likeable.
Storm Nordwind: We do lose sight of any kind of reality.
Storm Nordwind: And one of the sayings in PaB (Play as Being) is: Drop what you have to see what you are
Storm Nordwind: And the very frequency - every 15 minutes - is at least as important as the duration
Storm Nordwind: If people practice of PaB is only that - pausing every 15 minutes - I suspect therey'll find some kind of (personal) noticable change
    Hokon Cazalet: yup
    Sylectra Darwin: agree
Storm Nordwind: I strongly recommend reading the intros, hints and FAQs on our Wiki http://wiki.playasbeing.org
Hokon Cazalet: brb, gotta cut up food
    Lucinda Lavender: :)
Sylectra Darwin: Hokon, what's for dinner?
Efuturist Daviau: An obsevation I get from my dog, Peyton. Dogs live almost entirely in the moment, something we could all benefit from.
Sylectra Darwin: Dogs are great for that!
Storm Nordwind: And it's certainly possible for humans too.
Efuturist Daviau: Harder for us perhaps, hahha
Storm Nordwind: It comes with practice, I suspect :)
Storm Nordwind: What do you think makes it harder for us, Efuturist?
Efuturist Daviau: Well, many things but we tend to be pre-ocupied and focused on the future more so than the present.
    Hokon Cazalet: back
Lucinda Lavender: and we are taught so many things about how to survive....that involve figuring out a plan
Hokon Cazalet: eatin pizza @ sylectra =)
Storm Nordwind: A car driver needs to look ahead if they are to journey successfully. But if they do that exclusively they can miss some great scenery... and the chance to stop, get out, and enjoy it! (And perhaps some people forget that they are anything else but car drivers!)
Hokon Cazalet: thats one reason i like watching my cats and living with them, they very much live in the living-present.
    Hokon Cazalet: yup storm
    Lucinda Lavender: good picture Storm
Sylectra Darwin: @Hokon pizza sounds good. I had fish and chips!
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Lucinda Lavender: the focus on creating a grown up out of oneself ...another kind of vehicle...
Lucinda Lavender: that may interrupt the ability to play...:)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Efuturist Daviau: mmm, yes childlike curiosity is a wonderful thing.
Storm Nordwind: Missing the chance, Luci, to grow up as "Homo Ludens" perhaps?
Lucinda Lavender: sorry storm but what is Homo Ludens?
Storm Nordwind: Ah... a book written 70 years ago that you might enjoy (a transaltion of, at least)
    Lucinda Lavender: :)cool
Storm Nordwind: The author is Johan Huizinga
Storm Nordwind: He was a Dutch professor who was a historian and cultural theorist
Efuturist Daviau: An interesting thesis, man the player
    Storm Nordwind: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo_Ludens_%28book%29
    Lucinda Lavender: interesting...
    Lucinda Lavender: thanks:)
Efuturist Daviau: It's how we learn am I right?
    Storm Nordwind: You're most welcome
Lucinda Lavender: as life goes on...less fear and more play
    Hokon Cazalet: yup efuturist
    Storm Nordwind nods to both
Efuturist Daviau: You may call me Efu if you wish
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Lucinda Lavender: easier:)
Sylectra Darwin: I like that short version!
Storm Nordwind smiles "Thank you" :)
    Efuturist Daviau: Yes
Hokon Cazalet: hehe especially when im typing with one hand =P
    Efuturist Daviau: hahhahha
Storm Nordwind: Effulgent Efu - I like that!
Sylectra Darwin: Let's go around and rename ourselves in the same way...
Sylectra Darwin: Have you ever played that game?
    Hokon Cazalet: hehe nope
    Lucinda Lavender: I esounds fun
Sylectra Darwin: You have to pick a complimentary adjective with a similar sound as your name
Sylectra Darwin: It can't be mean to yourself.
    Storm Nordwind: An example please?
Sylectra Darwin: I was at a meeting to discuss the environment, hosted by the Quakers, and they taught me this.
Sylectra Darwin: I called myself Silly Sylvie
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Storm Nordwind: Ah... I read "complementary" instead of "complimentary"!!
    Lucinda Lavender: brb...
    Sylectra Darwin: hmmm
Efuturist Daviau: I am honored Storm by your quick wit
    Storm Nordwind: You're welcome :)
Storm Nordwind: So like "Warm Storm" ?
Sylectra Darwin: yeah, that would work!
    Efuturist Daviau: perhaps stormin Storm
Hokon Cazalet: i cant think of one for my name
    Efuturist Daviau: Eclectra Sylectra?
Storm Nordwind: "Look on Hokon" ;)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Hokon Cazalet: i like that =)
    Sylectra Darwin: haha!
    Efuturist Daviau: Ohh that's good
Sylectra Darwin: We need one for Lucinda
    Efuturist Daviau: Now Lucinda
    Efuturist Daviau: yes yes
    Lucinda Lavender: ; 0
    Lucinda Lavender: ;0
Sylectra Darwin: Easy one would be lovely lucinda.
    Lucinda Lavender: :)
    Storm Nordwind: Lucent Lucinda, perhaps?
Efuturist Daviau: Oh I like that one
Lucinda Lavender: what does lucent mean:)?
Hokon Cazalet thinks of the computer company
Storm Nordwind: Giving off light, luminous, translucent. clear.
Lucinda Lavender: ah..would aspire to it:)
    Storm Nordwind smiles
    Efuturist Daviau: almost transcendental
    Sylectra Darwin: all good stuff
    Efuturist Daviau: wow
Storm Nordwind: No need to aspire. Just BE :))
    Lucinda Lavender: right:)
Storm Nordwind: playfully - of course!
    Hokon Cazalet: )
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Sylectra Darwin: My dears, I am fading fast. But say as long as you like and visit. I'll take care of the log when it's time.
