The Guardian for this meeting was Pema Pera. The comments are by Pema Pera.

    Pema Pera: hi Arch!
Pema Pera: You're up late (or early)!
    Archmage Atlantis: Morning, Pema :)
    Archmage Atlantis: Early
Pema Pera: evening here, 5 pm
    Pema Pera: here = Kyoto
Archmage Atlantis: Sometimes I just wake up
    Archmage Atlantis: Ah
Archmage Atlantis: What is your impression of how things are over there?
Pema Pera: by and large, everything is normal in cities like Tokyo and Kyoto
    Pema Pera: hi Sun!
Sunshine Vayandar: hi there Pema, Arch ;)
    Archmage Atlantis: Hello, Sun :)
Pema Pera: of course, in the North-East, along the coast, it is like a war zone, and it will take years to rebuild
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;)
Sunshine Vayandar: I can't even begin to imagine how it is Pema
Pema Pera: and the zone around the nuclear reactor is looking more and more Chernobyl like . . . sadly
Pema Pera: but Tokyo is far enough away to be mostly normal
Archmage Atlantis: That is good, Pema, for the cities........the area Hurricane Andrew destroyed 15 years ago has never truely recovered
Pema Pera: I experienced two major earth quakes in the first two days I was in Tokyo
Sunshine Vayandar: I saw a documentary about the quake in Turkey ...
    Pema Pera: both magnitude 5 . . .
    Archmage Atlantis: Yikes!
Pema Pera: the aftershocks are enormous and frequent
Pema Pera: I'd never heard wooden beams crack ominously above my head
Sunshine Vayandar: I wonder how people live with knowing - it can happen again ...
Archmage Atlantis: I have never been in an earthquake, even a small one
Pema Pera: so far only experienced minor earthquakes
Sunshine Vayandar: me too - only once
Pema Pera: they grow used to it
Pema Pera: humans are amazingly adaptive
Sunshine Vayandar: but I didn't even know - it was an earthquake
Sunshine Vayandar: hmm still keep safe pls
Pema Pera: near magnitude 5, you know :-)

    danger is relative . . .

Pema Pera: I talked with a woman from Afghanistan, in the bullet train this afternoon, was funny:
Pema Pera: normally she asks her relatives by phone and email: are you okay?
Archmage Atlantis: That is an interesting area of thought - I have a book called "The Unthinkable" that I haven't read yet.....it deals with "who survives when disaster strikes - and why"
Pema Pera: but now it was there turn to ask that question!
    Archmage Atlantis: Interesting
Sunshine Vayandar: hmm life is so fragile
Pema Pera: tell us when you've read it, Arch!
    Pema Pera: yes!!
Archmage Atlantis: Ok, will do :)
Sunshine Vayandar: for how long are you in Japan Pema?
    Archmage Atlantis: Yes, how long?
    Pema Pera: ten weeks, Sun
    Sunshine Vayandar: kk
Sunshine Vayandar: I hope I can visit Japan one day
Archmage Atlantis: Do you work with a particular institute when you are there each time, Pema?
    Sunshine Vayandar: brb door
Pema Pera: by the way, thank you again for that beautiful comic book, Sun!
Pema Pera: many particular institutes, half a dozen or more
Pema Pera: depending on which project(s) I focus on at any given week
Archmage Atlantis: I don't think anyone under 45 uses the words "comic book" *g* - graphic novel, or some other euphemism :)
Pema Pera: I have many project running in parallel, with many collaborators; my life is partly like a lab, partly like a market place :-)
Archmage Atlantis: sorry about missing the bell :(
    Pema Pera: :-)
    Sunshine Vayandar: back
    Pema Pera: wb!
Archmage Atlantis: Sun, Pema complemented you on the project you did, and I agree
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;)
    Archmage Atlantis: The storybook
Sunshine Vayandar: it's still a work in progress

    that was great news!

    Sunshine Vayandar: ;)
Pema Pera: oh, there will be more?
    Pema Pera: Wonderful ! ! !
    Pema Pera holding his breath
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;)
Sunshine Vayandar: well for now I work on the birthday events
Sunshine Vayandar: but I like the idea of a comic book format
Pema Pera: in that case we should have a birthday every month!
    Sunshine Vayandar: hehehe
    Pema Pera: a luniversary
Sunshine Vayandar: ;p) I would not object to frequent festivities
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;D
Pema Pera: Bleu of course is the Queen of frequent festivities!
    Sunshine Vayandar: true
Sunshine Vayandar: and I am in close contact with her
Pema Pera: as soon as you make a small suggestion, she transforms it into an Art of Being project!
Sunshine Vayandar: so festivities might increase
    Pema Pera: oh-oh
Archmage Atlantis: *chuckle* .....and I just said while you were gone that no one uses the phrase "comic book" anymore......oh well....try to be up to date on the lingo, but .....oh well.
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;))
Pema Pera: manga is a nicer word, I agree, Arch!
    Sunshine Vayandar: I love manga
Sunshine Vayandar: Aga told me about it
Sunshine Vayandar: when I rezzed it for the first time
Sunshine Vayandar: did it rez - I can't see it
Sunshine Vayandar: hmm might be my connection again
Pema Pera: did you rez something right now, Sun?
    Sunshine Vayandar: yes
    Pema Pera: where?
    Sunshine Vayandar: hmm behind me
Sunshine Vayandar: but it says : Attempt to rez an object failed.
    Pema Pera: sorry, can't see anything . . .
Sunshine Vayandar: hmm yes I can't rez hmm
Pema Pera: did you choose the playasbeinghere group
Pema Pera: as your active group?
Sunshine Vayandar: I was rezzing the manga

suddenly a great black square appeared, and soon turned into a manga page

    Pema Pera: there you go!
Archmage Atlantis: I changed my viewpoint and I don't see anything behind you either
    Sunshine Vayandar: yay
    Pema Pera: congrats!
    Sunshine Vayandar: ty ;)))
Archmage Atlantis: Now I see a big solid black rectangle
Pema Pera: wonderfu -- more than life size!
Archmage Atlantis: Ah, there it is
Sunshine Vayandar: hmm the problem is I think - that the letters are not so clear
Pema Pera: Bleu blowing her horn, hehehe
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;))
Sunshine Vayandar: can u read it properly?
Pema Pera: ah, you can click on the little panels below!
Sunshine Vayandar: or have any other suggestions
Pema Pera: (as I just did)
Pema Pera: and browse that way, great!
Sunshine Vayandar: yes that is handy
Pema Pera: yes, can read it clearly
Sunshine Vayandar: it's full perm - you can use it for other slides
    Sunshine Vayandar: great
Pema Pera: hmmm, I wonder whether we shouldn't have this hear permanetly somwhere near the pavilion
Sunshine Vayandar: Adams was saying that it's not so clear
Archmage Atlantis: I didn't know the click on the panel trick........I had to zoom in as close as possible to read the word bubbles
Sunshine Vayandar: I think it's a good idea
Pema Pera: Sun, could you IM Storm about setting it up here?
    Sunshine Vayandar: ok I will
Pema Pera: he is the custodian of the pavilion, having also built it
    Sunshine Vayandar: yes
Pema Pera: and yes, the letters for me are very clear!
    Pema Pera: and crips
    Pema Pera: crisp, rather
Sunshine Vayandar: I am still thinking of making the letters a little bit bigger
    Pema Pera: not necessary
    Sunshine Vayandar: ahh great
    Sunshine Vayandar: ok
Pema Pera: I'm afraid they would dominate too much
Archmage Atlantis: Better equipment, better glasses, or better eyesight than I have, Pema
Pema Pera: it may be that Adams is on a slow link
Pema Pera: then at first it shows up fuzzy and slowly improves the quality
Pema Pera: like with jpegs on the web
Sunshine Vayandar: Arch - can you see it ok?
Sunshine Vayandar: yes it takes time
Pema Pera: a fast Japanese cell phone based internet connection Arch :-)
Sunshine Vayandar: really you are using your phone?

funny always, this switching between inner and outer existence, SL and RL . . .

Pema Pera: in a coffeeshop in Kyoto Station serving one of the best lattes in town
Sunshine Vayandar: I have never done that
Archmage Atlantis: No, Sun.....Not even when I zoom in as close as possible
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;)
Pema Pera: not my phone, but a cell-phone-waves-based special internet-phone
    Sunshine Vayandar: oh really Arch
Sunshine Vayandar: ohh ok - sounds like a fun thing to have
Archmage Atlantis: I'm using a 24 inch HDTV as a monitor with a fast DSL connection
Pema Pera: looks like a cell phone, uses the same band, but specialized for digital internet connection
Archmage Atlantis: Plus I wear very strong lens in my glasses as my eyesight is not that good (since a young child, but getting worse :) )
Pema Pera: I'll have to take off -- I've volunteered for five 1 am slots this week, so I can't stay too long at each one
Pema Pera: but I've claimed the log, so all is well. :-)
Sunshine Vayandar: ok ;) very nice to see you Pema
Pema Pera: see you soon again!
    Sunshine Vayandar: take care ;))
    Pema Pera: u both 2 !

I left, and Sun and Arch continued their conversation.

Sunshine Vayandar: yes see u soon
Archmage Atlantis: I saw that, Pema *g*.....take care & have a good rest of the day
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;)
Sunshine Vayandar: hmm so I will look at this problem
Sunshine Vayandar: and I ask others also to test if they can read
Archmage Atlantis: I would agree with Pema on enlisting Storm's input....
Sunshine Vayandar: yes one sec I IM him
Archmage Atlantis: If you have the patience to ask others, that would be useful also.....equipment and connections vary so much
Archmage Atlantis: I get the impression that you do a fair amount of "building" in SL, Sun......is that impression correct?
Sunshine Vayandar: yes I like to play around
Sunshine Vayandar: I am not so good but really enjoy it
Sunshine Vayandar: exactly - it's important to ask others
Archmage Atlantis: That is good....I like the results of others building efforts, but not the patience to do it myself
Sunshine Vayandar: hmm better do always what you enjoy
Archmage Atlantis: For me, SL is "social media" :)
Sunshine Vayandar: yes and it works well
Sunshine Vayandar: it seems to make a difference that we are in a 3D environment
Archmage Atlantis: High learning curve though
Sunshine Vayandar: yes very much so
Sunshine Vayandar: but what I found was - there was a lot of help available
    Sunshine Vayandar: when I came
Archmage Atlantis: Do you have a systems/computer background Su?
Archmage Atlantis: If I may ask, of course
Sunshine Vayandar: hmm well I learned everything myself
Sunshine Vayandar: I started using computers about 10 years ago
Sunshine Vayandar: and once i discovered the internet I can't stop learning
Sunshine Vayandar: I find computers and the net - great tools
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, the internet changed everything........I had a summer job keypunching cards to input to IBM mainframes during High School........things have come a long way since them
    Archmage Atlantis: *then
Sunshine Vayandar: ahh I remember those cards
Sunshine Vayandar: my granddad was a computer pioneer
Archmage Atlantis: Hmmmm.......I don't mind admitting my age, but revealing a knowledge of keypunched cards might not fit the profile of a demure lady....if that isn't sexist to say
    Archmage Atlantis: Ah, ok
Sunshine Vayandar: and so we did have some computers as I was growing up
Sunshine Vayandar: but never used them myself
Sunshine Vayandar: till I arrived in Africa
Archmage Atlantis: :))) - I was a geek, but we carried slide rules with pocket protectors back then *g*
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;)))
Sunshine Vayandar: I must go - see u soon Arch
Sunshine Vayandar: nice chatting a bit ;)
Archmage Atlantis: Ok, have a great day (or what is left of it), Sun - nice chatting with you also :)
    Sunshine Vayandar: ;))
    Sunshine Vayandar: see u soon
    Archmage Atlantis: k
