The Guardian for this meeting was Calvino Rabeni. The comments are by Calvino Rabeni.

    Hokon Cazalet: hi =)
Calvino Rabeni: That's a pretty nice comic format (referring to the nearby manga-style display of the PlayAsBeing anniversary event)
    Hokon Cazalet: yup
    Calvino Rabeni: Hello Hokon :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Calvino Rabeni: How goes it?
Hokon Cazalet: im doing rather well, you?
    Calvino Rabeni: Spring has sprung
    Hokon Cazalet: Yaaaaayyyyyyyy!
    Hokon Cazalet: yup
Calvino Rabeni: this was the first T-shirt-shorts-and-sandals day this year :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Calvino Rabeni: Hey, now's our chance .. before anyone else arrives..
    Hokon Cazalet: hehe
Calvino Rabeni: so what's up in ... philosophy and related topics :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Hokon Cazalet: ive gotten 3 more husserl books on phenomenology, I've been lately thinking of a mix of phenomenology and neoplatonic thought (sort of use phenomenology as a tool to maybe help update neoplatonism)
Hokon Cazalet: i wanna read plotinus' enneads, but i got a crappy translation lol
Hokon Cazalet: so thats sort of where im going atm
Calvino Rabeni: hmm, I'm thinking, one can add a dash of phenomenology to lots of different things
    Hokon Cazalet: yup i agree
Calvino Rabeni: I have phenomenology + mind (cognitive science)
Calvino Rabeni: and phenomenology + neurophilosophy
Hokon Cazalet: yup =) i remember you mentioning that a while back, how has that gone?
Calvino Rabeni: slow but sure I suppose ... I'm not too attracted to a-priori (idealism) I suppose ...
    Hokon Cazalet: awww
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Calvino Rabeni: also liking a book on neuroscience and psychotherapy
    Hokon Cazalet: cool
    Calvino Rabeni: :) awww
Calvino Rabeni: hmm lag and my lines are swapped
    Hokon Cazalet: eep! o.O
Calvino Rabeni: but at least they don't come out ahead of when I type them
Hokon Cazalet: yeah i think its only on your end where it comes out of order
Calvino Rabeni: that could be, yes

    iwandertoo Resident: waves
    Hokon Cazalet: hi susan =)
Calvino Rabeni: Hi, Susan and Arch :)
Archmage Atlantis: hello susan, hokon, cal
Archmage Atlantis: Thank goodness, I arrived after the bell
Archmage Atlantis: But obviously with a slow connection....or a silent sesssion
Calvino Rabeni: I was pretty laggy
Archmage Atlantis: Well, better pretty than not, even if laggy
    Archmage Atlantis: rb
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Calvino Rabeni: humf .. that's us, maybe laggy, but always pretty :)
Calvino Rabeni: I heard some guy on public radio, a Christian scholar .. was interesting .. wrote a book called Speaking Christian
Calvino Rabeni: but it was mostly about words
Calvino Rabeni: that had changed in their connotations over the centuries
Hokon Cazalet: oh cool, i like learning the history of words myself
    Calvino Rabeni: nods
Calvino Rabeni: it's instructive to know the meanings shift over time
    Hokon Cazalet: yup
Calvino Rabeni: like "mercy" which now has a lot of stuff about unequal power, judgment, leniency, maybe even deferring punishment
    Hokon Cazalet: yes
Calvino Rabeni: whereas an earlier meaning was more like "empathy" ... feeling with, or even the archaic word "ruth" ... feeling open to anothers suffering
Hokon Cazalet: oh ok =) thats interesting to hear
Calvino Rabeni: Even in Shakespeare's time ... we have "the quality of mercy is not strained" (a contemplation of the spiritual versus legalistic meaning of the word)
Archmage Atlantis: Yep, that was my old self on the wall
    Calvino Rabeni: smiles
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Calvino Rabeni: the old one?
Hokon Cazalet: when did it aquire its more judicial meaning then?
Calvino Rabeni: you have a fresh new one then ?
    Calvino Rabeni: anyway, nice photo
Archmage Atlantis: I'm 60....well in Sept I am
    Archmage Atlantis: Finally, senior discounts
    Calvino Rabeni: :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)

Calvino Rabeni: I'm not sure when mercy got its judicial meaning ... maybe as people lost sight of the spirit nature of emotions and their meaning to the person having them,  and to their relationships ... Guess I'll have to read the book if I want to know :)
    Calvino Rabeni: Hi Paradise :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Hokon Cazalet: hi paradise
Paradise Tennant: hiya cal hokon arch susan :)
    iwandertoo Resident: waves
    Archmage Atlantis: Princess dress, Paradise?
Paradise Tennant: smiles yes a weakness for pretty :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Paradise Tennant: wol gave me some landmarks :) to explore :)
    Archmage Atlantis: I like it
Paradise Tennant: thank you arch :)
Hokon Cazalet: yup looks nice =)
iwandertoo Resident: wants to raid Paradise's closet
    iwandertoo Resident: (or inventory)
    Hokon Cazalet: hehe
    Paradise Tennant: smiles
    Paradise Tennant: and listens
    Archmage Atlantis: Listng to music
Calvino Rabeni: I've noticed I get into habits about distance of viewing ... usually a wide field, but every now and then I remember to catch some details .. SL can reward a close look
Hokon Cazalet: ty for the landmarks paradise =)
    Paradise Tennant: smiles
Paradise Tennant: how is mitzi cal :) was thinking about her today :)
Calvino Rabeni: Fine I believe, at present ... last time we spoke was a few weeks ago ... she sends her regards and fond memories
Archmage Atlantis: I cannot see outside the circle
Archmage Atlantis: The power of being is being drawn
Calvino Rabeni: Mitzi is an interesting person ... balances some opposites dynamically :)
Paradise Tennant: yes really enjoy her conversation and her energy :P
Calvino Rabeni: She is willing to dive into a lot of different ways of thinking, from science to mysticism and cultural to personal
    Hokon Cazalet: cool =)
Calvino Rabeni: We were talking about English words that changed over time as Christian culture changed
    Hokon Cazalet: brb

Calvino Rabeni: Another such word is "faith"
Archmage Atlantis: Odd, Cal......faith is the least changeable word to me.......the apects of expressing faith change, but faith is constant
Paradise Tennant: "Faith The English word is thought to date from 1200???50, from the Latin fidem or fidus, meaning trust, derived from the verb fidere, to trust."
    Calvino Rabeni: so yes, Paradise
Calvino Rabeni: yes according to this Christian scholar, author of a book "Speaking Christian" the word has tracked cultural changes
Calvino Rabeni: later it took on a thing he calls "word fundamentalism" and became more about professing a belief in something more or less factual
Calvino Rabeni: but earlier it meant something closer to "loyalty" or dedication
Calvino Rabeni: As I think of it, it got more "yin"
Archmage Atlantis: Yes, as I said, the aspects of expression change
Archmage Atlantis: The core does not
Calvino Rabeni: So it tracked the assumptions about what it is to know things and was colored by that
Calvino Rabeni: even if people aren't philosophers, there's a worldview of what it means to know
    Archmage Atlantis: yes
Calvino Rabeni: And arch, what is it you mean by the "core"?
Paradise Tennant: smiles and waves at luci :)
    Calvino Rabeni: Hi Cinda :)
    Lucinda Lavender: :)
Archmage Atlantis: Powerful and difficult question, Cal
    Lucinda Lavender: hi...eating and listening...
Archmage Atlantis: The core is that thing in me that never gives up
    Hokon Cazalet: back
    Calvino Rabeni: wb
Archmage Atlantis: That dies, yet finds a way to live on
    Hokon Cazalet: ty
Paradise Tennant: smiles at arch ..your essence :)
Calvino Rabeni: It seems it could be in the same domain as "hope" .. as in the saying "hope springs eternal"
Archmage Atlantis: The essence of all creation, Paradise
    Hokon Cazalet: yup calvino
Calvino Rabeni: a similar process came to "hope" as came to "faith" I would guess
Calvino Rabeni: now "hope" is associated more with whether a factual state of affairs happens
    Hokon Cazalet: yup
Calvino Rabeni: a bit sad, it gets more like a "to do" list item rather than a nice quality of the heart
Archmage Atlantis: Hope and faith are similar but different
Archmage Atlantis: Hope wishes, faith commands
Calvino Rabeni: Can you speak to some distinctions?
Lucinda Lavender: cal what is the question?
Hokon Cazalet: i suspect the change in attitudes to a more factual and judicial sense is probably why christianity has been losing members the past 200 years
    Calvino Rabeni: could be, Hokon
Calvino Rabeni: Cinda, we'd been talking about changes to what people mean by words like mercy and faith (and hope) over the centuries
    Lucinda Lavender: ...ok
Calvino Rabeni: when I said it was becoming more "yin" I meant, less active and powerful for the person using the word .. giving their spiritual power over to external conditions
Lucinda Lavender: when it is more based on being perhaps...

Calvino Rabeni: yes if it is an activist being, perhaps a becoming
Calvino Rabeni: being is a verb technically
    Lucinda Lavender: so true:)
Calvino Rabeni: I think there's something about those words that motivates people into action
Calvino Rabeni: an active element at least
Calvino Rabeni: they seem to have some magic effect on relationships
Paradise Tennant: To be wise it seems we need both faith and reason .. not sure the truths you arrive at through faith are any less real than the truth you arrive at through reason and fact ....
Archmage Atlantis: the action of going to be, me thinks....nigh all
    Hokon Cazalet: bye archmage
    Calvino Rabeni: Take care, Archmage
Paradise Tennant: good nite arch ;)
    Lucinda Lavender: bye Archmage:)
    Lucinda Lavender: hmmm
    Calvino Rabeni: hmmm
Calvino Rabeni: Time flies .. I hear that the child of Cosmic now has (just achieved) the ability to walk around on legs, and is learning the art of falling down
Calvino Rabeni: that is, land on the rear, not the face
    Calvino Rabeni: good skill
    Lucinda Lavender: :)
    iwandertoo Resident: waves. nite all.
    Lucinda Lavender: yes
    Hokon Cazalet: byebyes
    Calvino Rabeni: Good night Wanderer
Paradise Tennant: nite susan namaste :)
    Lucinda Lavender: night Susan:)
Calvino Rabeni: I was thinking after that, it might be wise for me to brush up on my falling skills
Calvino Rabeni: because I think I'm getting a little rusty :)
Paradise Tennant: falling is a lot of fun and you are in the perfect place for it :)
    Hokon Cazalet: hehe
Lucinda Lavender: wonder if in other times it was any different..are we evolving now?
Paradise Tennant: was thinking trust is an evolutionary step :)
    Hokon Cazalet: yup =)
Hokon Cazalet: to being a social species
Paradise Tennant: our economies are based on trust .. :) currency we trust has a value :)
Calvino Rabeni: probably ... getting better at falling into debt, but worse at falling out of trees :)
Paradise Tennant: money is a unit of trust :)
    Calvino Rabeni: that's evolution
    Lucinda Lavender: I am :)))
Hokon Cazalet sometimes wants to climb stuff
Paradise Tennant: me to hokon sometimes I want to climb :)
    Hokon Cazalet: hehe
Lucinda Lavender: I went to an auction today
Hokon Cazalet: even with all our progress and advances, we are still apes, i find that cool =)
Calvino Rabeni: oh .. I like stairwells, especially with exterior views
Hokon Cazalet: oh how did it go lucinda?
Lucinda Lavender: enticed people to spend money on wine:)
Paradise Tennant: lovely there are places to go was doing rock climbing today .. ahh luci that is a way to fall into debt :)
    Hokon Cazalet: hehe wine
Lucinda Lavender: well...we asked for money and trust we will have enough to get and pay for our conductors next year
Calvino Rabeni: brb, I'll nip off for a cuppa something :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Lucinda Lavender: interesting to watch everyone ...
Hokon Cazalet: im glad it was a good time
Paradise Tennant: yes autions bring out all kinds of emotions
Hokon Cazalet: i need to get out, go to some event, mix with people
Paradise Tennant: yes if you do not .. it so easy to get rusty at it :)
Lucinda Lavender: specially at the part called "fund a Need"...that was for the conductors:)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Lucinda Lavender: I made all these bottles get wrapped and in beautiful colors...laid on a table
    Hokon Cazalet: ooo cool =)
    Paradise Tennant: smiles
Lucinda Lavender: they signed up to pay 30 and might have gotten a 120 dollar bottle...
    Hokon Cazalet: oh wow

Lucinda Lavender: this was total donation for us
Lucinda Lavender: wine and money...and fun:)
Paradise Tennant: so a successful day :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Lucinda Lavender: yes
Hokon Cazalet: i havent had wine in a while
Lucinda Lavender: enough for another year
    Hokon Cazalet: Yaaaaayyyyyyyy!
    Paradise Tennant: smiles :)
Lucinda Lavender: so faith in another year...
    Paradise Tennant: and hope :)
    Paradise Tennant: and trust :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Lucinda Lavender: yes
Paradise Tennant: raises her cocoa to toast your success :)
    Lucinda Lavender: thanks:)
Lucinda Lavender: thought about the neon dream...
Lucinda Lavender: any more of that Para?
Paradise Tennant: smiles makes a nice title .. the neon dream
Paradise Tennant: was thinking of it this morning again trying to remember things more clearly
Lucinda Lavender: makes me want to start a shop somewhere called that
    Paradise Tennant: smiles
Lucinda Lavender: wondering what we know about neon
Paradise Tennant: what is the most vivid is how they looked :) their outlines vaguely human but such bright slashes of colour
Lucinda Lavender: wondered if they were sort of alien or energetic seeming
Paradise Tennant: hmm kind of felt energy :)
Paradise Tennant: not alien really ..
Lucinda Lavender: and not exactly friendly
    Paradise Tennant: hmm
    Paradise Tennant: out of place
Paradise Tennant: in the wrong space
Lucinda Lavender: in one dream book I have it mentioned entities that are from out side...
    Lucinda Lavender: an unknown
Paradise Tennant: everything a reaction to that but nothing inherent in them that was a negative
    Lucinda Lavender: ah
Lucinda Lavender: so there may be something unthreatening in actuallity after learning more
    Paradise Tennant: yes
Lucinda Lavender: Anyone from outside one's experience
Lucinda Lavender: might take time and listening to what is potential there
Lucinda Lavender: does not seem they do much
    Lucinda Lavender: or did they?
Paradise Tennant: was a confused dream .. at one point was surrounded . and feeling vulnerable so woke up :)
Calvino Rabeni: Did someone say aliens?
    Hokon Cazalet: wb
    Calvino Rabeni: ty
Lucinda Lavender: I wondered if Para's dream beings seemed like aliens
Paradise Tennant: smiles I had an odd recurring dream cal :) was telling Luci about it another evening
    Lucinda Lavender: neon outlined
    Lucinda Lavender: glow...
Paradise Tennant: movement intent intelligence and understanding different to ours
Lucinda Lavender: wonder what they could teach
    Lucinda Lavender: brb

Paradise Tennant: if I dream it again .. what question should I pose ?
Calvino Rabeni: I don't know, but am interested in the project of re-dreaming
Calvino Rabeni: have you tried that in any of your groups, Cinda?
Paradise Tennant: do you ever have recurring dreams cal ?
    Lucinda Lavender: yes
Calvino Rabeni: Well, yes and no... there are familiar themes but it looks different each time... like traveling, or visiting a hotel or school
    Calvino Rabeni: pretty generic
Lucinda Lavender: jushat you notice next.t allowing the image to be there and see w
Calvino Rabeni: and then there are a couple of mysterious dream places, temple kinds of things
Calvino Rabeni: that show up occasionally on the outskirts of different places
Calvino Rabeni: they seem to be the same place, but the dream is different
Calvino Rabeni: So nothing too recurrent
Calvino Rabeni: I noticed interestlngly, the "themes" evolved over time
Lucinda Lavender: well while waking one could make up a new ending
Calvino Rabeni: like I gradually take different perspectives of different characters in the dreams
Lucinda Lavender: sometimes one can go back in
Paradise Tennant: wake up and then go back into the dream ?
    Lucinda Lavender: and look around
Paradise Tennant: sounds spooky does it not ? like an alternate reality you can visit in your mind ?
Lucinda Lavender: yes...just be very still and relaxed
    Hokon Cazalet: yup paradise
Lucinda Lavender: pretty rare in my experience
Paradise Tennant: well if it does come again I will serve them all neon tea something bright blue like say blueberry tea :)))
    Hokon Cazalet: hehe
Lucinda Lavender: with some shamaic work one can have drumming and go back in
    Lucinda Lavender: shamanic
Hokon Cazalet: brb need a drink
Lucinda Lavender: there are some reules in that I think
Paradise Tennant: you wake up do some drumming and then go back into the dream ?
Lucinda Lavender: well not quite...you might go to someone familiar with techniques...like Robert Moss
Lucinda Lavender: he does this in workshops
Lucinda Lavender: drumming while one enters
    Lucinda Lavender: and looks around
    Hokon Cazalet: back
    Lucinda Lavender: wb
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
Lucinda Lavender: I forget much of what I ;earned there
Lucinda Lavender: learned...typing in a dark room:)
Paradise Tennant: hmm smiles thank you luci .. cal .. hokon .. I have a small dog to bathe .. so I think I will say good nite :) to per chance dream a neon dream :))
Hokon Cazalet: have a good night =)
    Calvino Rabeni: Good evening
Lucinda Lavender: yes have a good dream

Calvino Rabeni: hmm wee doggie :)
    Lucinda Lavender: sounding cute...
Paradise Tennant: smiles and poofs :)
    Calvino Rabeni: _/!\_
Lucinda Lavender: I will go too since I have been gone all day...need to prepare for new week...
Hokon Cazalet: okies, have a good night yourself =)
Lucinda Lavender: hope you are all well and have good sleep and dream yourselves:)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Calvino Rabeni: Dream well, Cinda
Lucinda Lavender: thanks...have not remembered one in a while
    Lucinda Lavender: hope to.
    Lucinda Lavender: too busy:)
Hokon Cazalet: what have you been up to lately?
Calvino Rabeni: well, last night I restored a crashed computer .. not too much fun but it needed to be done ..
    Hokon Cazalet: =(
Calvino Rabeni: today is the first nice spring weather
Calvino Rabeni: some bicycling ... "everyone" was out and about
Calvino Rabeni: on a less pleasant note by far
Calvino Rabeni: hmm today shuddering over foreign news ... Cruise missle sent to Ghadafi family and Osama finally killed by USA
Hokon Cazalet: whoa osama is dead?
Calvino Rabeni: It's no doubt making the buzz through second life
    Calvino Rabeni: yes
    Hokon Cazalet: !
    Hokon Cazalet: wow i dont pay attention do i . . .
    Calvino Rabeni: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/02/osama-bin-laden-dead-obama
Hokon Cazalet: ok so thats why obama is on the radio right now
Calvino Rabeni: no doubt yes .. I'm not listening
Hokon Cazalet: im not either, my dad is though
Calvino Rabeni: How about you, what's new?
Hokon Cazalet: not much, other than reading, hanging out with friends, and work, not much
Calvino Rabeni: That sounds familiar ... except for the work part
    Hokon Cazalet: =)

Calvino Rabeni: This just in .. smoking in public places banned in China ... that seems radical
Hokon Cazalet: that kinda sucks, i dont smoke myself b ut i dont like how smoking is getting closer and closer to being outright banned
Calvino Rabeni: I don't mind being told not to be destructive to myself and others
Calvino Rabeni: it's a matter of balance
Hokon Cazalet: i dont think it should be illegal to harm oneself, personally
Calvino Rabeni: really, assuming everyone has adequate judgment ..?
Hokon Cazalet: i dont think we do, but i believe in liberal ideals of autonomy
Calvino Rabeni: When people are suicidal they are considered incompetent to make decisions
Hokon Cazalet: thtas an extreme case, when the personal is either near mental illness or has one
Calvino Rabeni: Ah, I don't believe in ideals of any sort taken to extremes
Calvino Rabeni: a little automomy is a good thing
Hokon Cazalet: that itself is an extreme =P
Calvino Rabeni: or is it meta-extreme?
Calvino Rabeni: Do you think we live in a post-ideological age?
Hokon Cazalet: id say the same thing, adding meta doesnt really add much to the content of the concept imo
Hokon Cazalet: i dont think so, not yet, we havent moved into pure pragmatisim/legalism yet, many still believe in things like morality and truth
Hokon Cazalet: but i suspect objectivism may eventually triumph
Hokon Cazalet: i.e. only physical facts can be true, issues of ethics, aesthetics and metaphysics are non-sense
Hokon Cazalet: (ok i guess thats positivism)
Calvino Rabeni: what's the jargon .. a hegemonic ideology?
Calvino Rabeni: Like, "do it this way, the way I favor, everyone else is not worth considering"
    Hokon Cazalet: . . .
Hokon Cazalet: is so i can talk properly and be precise: mean what i say and say what i mean
    Hokon Cazalet: no . .
    Hokon Cazalet: ug
Hokon Cazalet: then science is a hegemony too
Hokon Cazalet: cuz it has tons of jargon

    Hokon Cazalet: so does enginerring
    Hokon Cazalet: and math
    Hokon Cazalet: and geometry
    Hokon Cazalet: and meterology
    Hokon Cazalet: and astronomy
Calvino Rabeni: If the scientists tried really hard to control politics and outlaw religion, then it would be
    Hokon Cazalet: o.O
Hokon Cazalet: wow i dont think scientistsd are fascists
Calvino Rabeni: but they basically just define their area of applicability
Hokon Cazalet: carl sagan def didnt think that way, im sure
Hokon Cazalet: btw hegemony is jargon too =P
Hokon Cazalet: postmodern jargon to be specific
Calvino Rabeni: yeah but what about the idea
Hokon Cazalet: my idea was, i think a mechanical view of reality may dominate in the next hundred years, replace pretty much all philosophy and religion
Hokon Cazalet: be the ideology of the third age

The conversation goes astray for a short time ...

Calvino Rabeni: the jargon is somewhat distasteful, basically in my view because of the lack of clear thinking behind it, it sounds like more of a style and act kind of thing, rather than a reasoned dialogue
Hokon Cazalet: thats your opinion, and it helps a lot in the sciences to be very clear and percise, plus you were using jargon yourself,
Hokon Cazalet: why cant i use it but you can?
Calvino Rabeni: it's up to you, feel free
Hokon Cazalet: if we all used vauge and ambigious terms, natural science would be seriously injured
Hokon Cazalet: a major problem of aristotelian physics was its imprecision, among other things
Calvino Rabeni: my opinions about these things are generic anyway, NOT in reference to your positions
    Calvino Rabeni: :)
Hokon Cazalet: but note, your critiquing the style of my comments, you didnt care to ask about the content, your ok with rejecting what i said outright on that basis alone; thats like a creationist rejecting evolution cuz of the jargon scientists use
Calvino Rabeni: Oh, I apologize .. I have no personal sense of critiquing YOUR style and comments
    Hokon Cazalet: ok
    Hokon Cazalet: ill accept
    Calvino Rabeni: ty :)

    ... back again.

Calvino Rabeni: what I was referring to is the mushy (in my opinion) rhetoric of postmodernist criticism
Hokon Cazalet: oh im not a postmodernist . . .
    Calvino Rabeni: I know
Calvino Rabeni: so we can turn on them together :)
    Hokon Cazalet: lol
    Hokon Cazalet: MWHAHAHA!!!
    Calvino Rabeni: heheh
    Hokon Cazalet: omg
    Hokon Cazalet: its almost midnight
    Calvino Rabeni: What's that ..
Hokon Cazalet: i need to eat
Calvino Rabeni: oh yes .. midnight snack?
    Hokon Cazalet: hehe yup
Hokon Cazalet: i didnt eat supper so
    Calvino Rabeni: hmm hehe
Hokon Cazalet: ok im gonna head off, have a good night and sleep yourself =)
Calvino Rabeni: I may pay a visit to the kitchen also
Hokon Cazalet: my belly commands me
    Hokon Cazalet: Yaaaaayyyyyyyy!
    Hokon Cazalet ??? food
    Calvino Rabeni: heheh yessss
Calvino Rabeni: Bye, then, bon appetit :)
    Hokon Cazalet: =)
    Hokon Cazalet: Yaaaaayyyyyyyy!
    Hokon Cazalet waves =)
