2011.05.20 19:00 - Lighthearted Tao te-scussion

The Guardian for this meeting was Sylectra Darwin. The comments are by Sylectra Darwin.

    Sylectra Darwin: well met
    Sylectra Darwin: :)
    stevenaia Michinaga: waves
    stevenaia Michinaga: nice wings
    Sylectra Darwin: how you?
    Sylectra Darwin: thanka
    stevenaia Michinaga: I'm good
    Sylectra Darwin: excellent
    stevenaia Michinaga: that was me
Sylectra Darwin: So, is the daoist group something we could discuss possibly
stevenaia Michinaga: sure, I sound an SL Daoist group that does what we do, take a chapter of the Dao te ching each meeting
stevenaia Michinaga: read a few translations
Sylectra Darwin: So, is this a serious group, or lighthearted?
stevenaia Michinaga: think deep thoughts on each chapter, give it our own meaning
stevenaia Michinaga: serious, meets for an hour or 90 minutes
stevenaia Michinaga: we don't have a leader or a scholar, just talk abut Tao and how it applies to us and our lives so each shares meaning with the other... like here
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
Sylectra Darwin: I am running out of time for groups that require me to do homework, myself. Is there one that allows impromptu thoughts instead?
stevenaia Michinaga: probably like your quaker meetings
Sylectra Darwin: LOL, just kidding. Your group sounds really nice!
Sylectra Darwin: Yeah, similar it sounds like to the Quakers.
stevenaia Michinaga: we do go around in circles once so each has a chance to share thoughts , even if they have none
Sylectra Darwin: Lately the Quakers have been way too complicated for me - committees, work sessions, projects, initiatives, personal leadings, budget pleadings. Ugh.
stevenaia Michinaga: I am usually one of one or two men in the group
    Sylectra Darwin: heh
Sylectra Darwin: Say no more - wink, wink!
stevenaia Michinaga: they do schedule lighter events, a yin yang picnic and taoist nature walk, I try to avoid them
Sylectra Darwin: what is a yin yang picnic? Coed?

    --BELL--

stevenaia Michinaga: prefer more thoughtful events, meetings discussiosn
    Sylectra Darwin: hi Susan!
stevenaia Michinaga: think susan is on text
    Sylectra Darwin: ok
stevenaia Michinaga: may need to be re-positioned :)
    Sylectra Darwin: hehe
    iwandertoo Resident: waves...mobile
Sylectra Darwin: how does that look, exactly?
    iwandertoo Resident: lol...its okay, really
Sylectra Darwin: She looks pretty hard to push, actually.
Sylectra Darwin: It's like you're herding her into the ring.
Sylectra Darwin: What will happen when you get her there?
stevenaia Michinaga: shhh, she will never know
    Sylectra Darwin: SHHHHHH
    stevenaia Michinaga: she smiles
    Sylectra Darwin: OKAY - WINK
    iwandertoo Resident: be kind
Sylectra Darwin wishes she had a videocamera
    Sylectra Darwin: Welcome Susan!
stevenaia Michinaga: there, now doesnt she look like she was meant to be there
iwandertoo Resident: leave the evidence elsewhere
Sylectra Darwin: You can see a pic of Steven pushing you into the pavilion with the chat log...if you wish
stevenaia Michinaga: welcome susan, so nice of you to join us :)
    stevenaia Michinaga: thanks Sylectra (;
Sylectra Darwin: Susan in honor of you we are all standing.
    iwandertoo Resident: many thanks, stevenaia
    iwandertoo Resident: lol
iwandertoo Resident: haha there is now visual evidence
Sylectra Darwin: So where are you at the moment - some remove mountain peak outside your tent? Denver Colorado at a beer festival? Dog show in NYC?
    iwandertoo Resident: I wish nyc
iwandertoo Resident: waiting for transport home
stevenaia Michinaga: so as I was saying, I discovered a similar Tao study group here in SL where they take a chapter of the Tao Te CHing and read various tranlations, more like a lecture
Sylectra Darwin: in text or voice chat?
stevenaia Michinaga: you are in NYC Susan?
stevenaia Michinaga: the leader is in voice
    iwandertoo Resident: no...bay area...wish nyc
stevenaia Michinaga: everyone else listens , not really a discussion
iwandertoo Resident: what happens with the variations, steve
Sylectra Darwin: I encountered a really nice blog about SL...let me see if I can find it for you.
    stevenaia Michinaga: variations?
    stevenaia Michinaga: tranlations?
iwandertoo Resident: various translations u mentioned above
stevenaia Michinaga: they are read, there a many of them from Tao of Pooh to more esoteric translation
stevenaia Michinaga: I even have a tao of architecture book which is not so poetic, strangly enough
    iwandertoo Resident: not familiar....
Sylectra Darwin: Tao of Pooh - good book, quick read.
    Sylectra Darwin: Not very thorough
iwandertoo Resident: I think I had it yrs ago but never read it
    iwandertoo Resident: prob a roommates
stevenaia Michinaga: the original Tao te Ching as only 80 some very short chapter, but it si like poetry, easilly interperated to sure each person
iwandertoo Resident: I tried reading it some time ago...was difficult. to understand
stevenaia Michinaga: reminds me if IChing in that each reading can be relivent to a specific moment in time
iwandertoo Resident: worked with someone who lived by it...still..couldn't grasp it
stevenaia Michinaga: generally I don;t "get" poetry, but this begins to make sence to me
    iwandertoo Resident: :)
stevenaia Michinaga: I think the exposure to poetry here has helped
stevenaia Michinaga: another thing new.. brought to me by RL
    stevenaia Michinaga: SL
    stevenaia Michinaga: oops
    Sylectra Darwin: ...still looking...
    stevenaia Michinaga: lol
    Sylectra Darwin: I like poetry!
    iwandertoo Resident: :)
stevenaia Michinaga: I am learning to find meaning in it
Sylectra Darwin: I listen to to a podcast called Performance Poetry and lots of the poets are right near us in NYC
stevenaia Michinaga: a late poetic bloomer of sorts
    iwandertoo Resident: your in nyc?
stevenaia Michinaga: I'm close, sylectra is closer
    Sylectra Darwin: About 20 miles.
    Sylectra Darwin: http://www.indiefeedpp.libsyn.com/

Sylectra Darwin: Luc, my current animation is this silly "anime" type AO
    iwandertoo Resident: ohhhhh
    iwandertoo Resident: love skipping
Sylectra Darwin: If I jump, I flip over
    Lucinda Lavender: looking
stevenaia Michinaga: wonders what it is about skipping

    stevenaia Michinaga: Hi observerm
Sylectra Darwin: It's a fun AO but it's a little show-offy for my usual.

Sylectra Darwin: Observerm, how ARE you my dear??
    observerm Resident waves

Sylectra Darwin: Does anyone have thoughts for the weekend? Stevenaia mentioned a tao meeting in RL later this weekend.
Sylectra Darwin: I will get to hear local authors read some of their work at a writer's group.
Lucinda Lavender: that sounds very interesting Sylectra:)
Sylectra Darwin: It is - these authors are way more talented than me but that's a good thing
Lucinda Lavender: I have yoga with meditation on Sunday
Paradise Tennant: thinking of taking a drive and doing some hiking near pelee island southern most part of canada :) so nice to sit hear and contemplate doing interesting things

Paradise Tennant: so many places are beautiful .. inspiring wonders at how many islands have been authors muses
Sylectra Darwin: Puget Sound is lovely
stevenaia Michinaga: I've been Seattle once in the 70s, rode out to Port Angeles and camped on the beach coast and rain forest
stevenaia Michinaga: when hitch hiking was something to do
Lucinda Lavender: today was a low tide day...and looking across I saw the mountains to the west the Olympics in a bit of a haze but very beautiful
    Lucinda Lavender: sounds so adventurous
Lucinda Lavender: use to do the same but rarely

    --BELL--

stevenaia Michinaga: it didn;t even rain there that week
Lucinda Lavender: :))everything is very green now.
Sylectra Darwin: Here in NJ too :)
Paradise Tennant: think there is something essential to life about natural beauty ..like life is trying to express itself in form and colour and beauty captures best what it really is
Sylectra Darwin: I keep thinking, if civilization collapses today, the underbrush will take over New Jersey in about 2 weeks.
Lucinda Lavender: nods to Para and raises eybrows to NJ
Paradise Tennant: smiles well as the end of the world is reported as nigh I went out and bought a bag of potatoe chips :))
Bleu Oleander: did you read "the world without us"?
Lucinda Lavender: sounds interesting and I think I have heard of it Bleu
    Bleu Oleander: very interesting
Bleu Oleander: nothing stays around too long
    Bleu Oleander: without us

Paradise Tennant: smiles and eats her potatoe chips
stevenaia Michinaga: some people plan on placing clothes on the grund with dry ice to give the rapturew effect
Bleu Oleander looks around for some chocolate :)

    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
Paradise Tennant: there are enterpising souls .. regardless of the circumstance
stevenaia Michinaga: interesting they would trust their pets to those who would not end up where they are going
Paradise Tennant: would honestly think the pets would go first :)
    Lucinda Lavender: nodding
    stevenaia Michinaga: wb Sylectra
Sylectra Darwin: sorry, my connection dropped when I unplugged ethernet cable
    stevenaia Michinaga: that'll do it
Sylectra Darwin: yeah, now I am on wifi and whoa it is slower
Lucinda Lavender: SElectra...do you know if there will be certain topics to the writer's group?
    Sylectra Darwin: It's anything fiction.
    Lucinda Lavender: ah
Sylectra Darwin: Small group - maybe 5 of us.
    Lucinda Lavender: wow...nice
Sylectra Darwin: One guy likes to write hard boiled detective fiction
Sylectra Darwin: one writes Cajun bayou tales
Sylectra Darwin: one writes about coming of age tales for college kids in the 50s
Sylectra Darwin: another has written poems about boxing.
Sylectra Darwin: I have not yet contributed becuase of the demands of my job
    Lucinda Lavender: nodding
Sylectra Darwin: but I listen and enjoy!
Paradise Tennant: sounds like an interesting group :) creativity is contagious just being around it will make you bubble with ideas :)
    Lucinda Lavender: yes!

    --BELL--

Sylectra Darwin: I am sorry, I had meant to find you all the nice blog article on Second Life that I found yesterday but it eludes me still.
Lucinda Lavender: have you written fiction sylectra?
Sylectra Darwin: I did find a blog about hair in SL - LOL
stevenaia Michinaga: doesn;t yo browser have a history you can look through?
Sylectra Darwin: Me? a bit, though not for a while. I would write sci fi or fantasy if I did write
    Bleu Oleander: nite everyone :)
Sylectra Darwin: Are you off, Bleu?
Bleu Oleander: nice to see you all :)
Sylectra Darwin: Nice to see you
    stevenaia Michinaga: night bleu
    Lucinda Lavender: nite Bleu...:)sweet dreams:)
Paradise Tennant: nite nite bleu :)
Lucinda Lavender: once upon a time I was asked to write a personal myth...
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
Lucinda Lavender: not easy for me
    Lucinda Lavender: very embarrassing
    Paradise Tennant: listens
Lucinda Lavender: created a story about a pig that got lostand separated from others...and then found
Sylectra Darwin: that sounds interesting - is there allegory?
Lucinda Lavender: would srite a different one now I think
Lucinda Lavender: I guess that is what you call it allegory
Paradise Tennant: what would the one now be about :)
    Sylectra Darwin: smiles
Lucinda Lavender: it would include dreaming:) as connection to the world
Paradise Tennant: smiles it is a connection to the world isn't it .. not always so easy to really see that ..thank you lucinda :) when you say it like that it is so clear
Lucinda Lavender: and the dinensionality of our experience
    Lucinda Lavender: dimensionality:)
Sylectra Darwin: sounds like it would be even better now!
    Paradise Tennant: smiles
Lucinda Lavender: oh it would be a tale of victory
Lucinda Lavender: and what does that mean...I ask...
stevenaia Michinaga: what would be defeated?
Lucinda Lavender: not sure how to explain
Lucinda Lavender: the experience of separation
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
    Lucinda Lavender: perhaps...
Lucinda Lavender: nothing wrong with aloness either in my mind
Lucinda Lavender: just that there is more to our consciousness for me now
Paradise Tennant: you are never really alone ?
Paradise Tennant: like you are in a cubicle in a library :) people around just not always connected but still there ?
Lucinda Lavender: in a field of potential/possibility...it does not seem to be so
Lucinda Lavender: nodding...you cannot see...but there is potential to tune in to what is most important outside ones personal experience

    --BELL--

Lucinda Lavender: but maybe I have to be quiet and asleep to really listen sometimes
Lucinda Lavender: not in charge ...
    Sylectra Darwin: true Luc
Paradise Tennant: nods yes just op[en
    Paradise Tennant: open
Lucinda Lavender: it is great to drop what we have to be...because then there is more space
stevenaia Michinaga: yes, empty space always fills with new-ness
Lucinda Lavender: and eventually then new awareness
    Lucinda Lavender: yes
    Sylectra Darwin: nods
stevenaia Michinaga: seems to be a large supply of both empty space available and new-ness to fill it
Paradise Tennant: smiles at stev :)
    Paradise Tennant: newness nowness :)
Lucinda Lavender: perhaps time is the vehicle of sorts
    Lucinda Lavender: carrying one on
stevenaia Michinaga: smiles, was just thinking that, time, the vehicle of new-ness
Lucinda Lavender: lets throw stuff in the vehicle and go off for the weekend:)
stevenaia Michinaga: like a waste pipe, time empties the space to provide for new-ness to arise
    Lucinda Lavender: filling and emptying
stevenaia Michinaga: not sure time would like the plumbing metaphor
    stevenaia Michinaga: feels like ducking
    Lucinda Lavender: :)
    Sylectra Darwin: I like it.
    Paradise Tennant: smiles
Lucinda Lavender: has anyone else a personal myth?
Paradise Tennant: something we cling to but may not be real ?
Lucinda Lavender: one in which certain work happens and creates some kind of resonance that connects one to humaness

    --BELL--

Paradise Tennant: I think we all like to think we are solid . finite .. a firm distinct entity watching my mom get older I realize that is not the case we are more like silliy putty always changing :)
stevenaia Michinaga: yes, a unified image that lives within all of us that we identfy with, the myth is there, jsut a matter of bring it up from our depths
stevenaia Michinaga: "saw a film on making silly putty tonight"
    Lucinda Lavender: cool!
Lucinda Lavender: I think about how we are deconstructing too
Sylectra Darwin: friends, I am going to have to get to bed...getting tired. But wonderful ideas are being explored here tonight.
Lucinda Lavender: have a great time Sylectra...:)and thanks
Sylectra Darwin: thanks to you as well...good night!

Lucinda Lavender: and sometimes a very silly level:)
Lucinda Lavender: it can be a favorite for me:)
Paradise Tennant: smiles are we ready to be sung to sleep :) speaking of silly
    Paradise Tennant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhA_TTKetyM

Paradise Tennant: will go to bed thinking of my myths :)
