2019.02.04 07:00 - Compassionate Listening

The Guardian for this meeting was Adams Rubble. The comments are by Adams Rubble substitute hosting for Eden Haiku.

Adams Rubble: Good morning Riddle :)
    Riddle Sideways: Morning Adams
Adams Rubble: the sun is shining here
Riddle Sideways: waves to Eden, hope Cuba is fun
    Riddle Sideways: great
    Adams Rubble: oh yes, waving
Riddle Sideways: sun is getting up Slowly here
    Riddle Sideways: rain and fog
Adams Rubble: I hope it has not worn itself out by the time it gets there
Riddle Sideways: the pond in the meadow looks to be about at the record size
    Adams Rubble: wow
Riddle Sideways: don't see the pair of ducks yet, but they were there yesterday
Riddle Sideways: has been several years since ducks have been at the pond

I suggest a topic from my blog. I have been listening to a audio reading of Thich Nhat Hanh's Book The Heart of Buddha's Teaching off and on for the past few days and had made a few notes in my blog. I thought a few of them might make a good topic.

Adams Rubble: did you see my blog yesterday?
Adams Rubble: I have gotten back to Thich
Adams Rubble: I think there may be a topic or two there
Adams Rubble: where the numbers start about halfway down
Riddle Sideways: saw, but missed reading it yesterday
    Riddle Sideways: starting up email
Adams Rubble: should I list them?
    Riddle Sideways: "another gift"?
Adams Rubble: yes, starting about halfway down
    Adams Rubble: with number 1
Riddle Sideways: go ahead and list
Riddle Sideways: am having issues finding correct place
    Adams Rubble:

    1. What I am doing is the most important thing I will ever do will keep us focused. We are always giving our attention to something. Does it take us away from here and now? Mindfulness means coming back to present moment. Is this real or am I dreaming? If we do not live deeply it will be only a dream. Hmmm, that is why yesterday seemed like a dream, at least the second part of the trip. I was there but thinking about the next step, thinking about being tired.

2.R – Beloved–Look into their eyes. Who are you that is sharing my pain, my suffering, my life, my death.

3.R – He’s covering lots of ground. Talking about conscious breathing. Be aware of feelings. Anger as an example. Recognize it.

4.R – Samsara is anything that is formed. A flower is a form. Anger is a form–a mental formation.

5.R – When we recognize agitation, we can make it our friend. Every mental formation needs to be recognize it. If it is unwholesome we can make it dormant. Individual consciousness is made up of universal consciousness and vice versa.

6.R – Learning to love our body. It is made of earth; it is made of water; it is made of air. Meditate on these aspects.

6.R – Objects of mind. When we are angry we are angry at someone or something it is the object. If we admire the sky, it is the object of our admiration.

    7.R_ Hello habit thinking.

    8. R – Learn to listen with compassion; listen deeply; listen with whole being’ listen mindfully

Riddle Sideways: Ah! email only showed the first 3 paragraphs
    Riddle Sideways: needed to click
    Adams Rubble: ohhh
Adams Rubble: I woke up thinking about the Heart Sutra this morning and it seemed I understood how my own life is conditional in a way I had not understood it before
Adams Rubble: It was because Thich talked about the flower's emptiness :)
Riddle Sideways: just checked. he is still alive
    Adams Rubble nods

Riddle was referring to Thich who has gone back to his native monastery to await his "transition". There were western reports his death was imminent but eastern reports paint a different picture.

Adams Rubble: I was stiirred by his words about looking into the eyes of one's beloved and asking "Who are you?"
Adams Rubble: who are you that shares my suffering, my joys, my life, my death?
Riddle Sideways: keep reading a sentence or phrase and drifting off
Riddle Sideways: large universes in a few words
Riddle Sideways: not sure if that is living fully
Adams Rubble: yes, these are little excerpts I pulled out
Riddle Sideways: so hard to listen with compassion
Riddle Sideways: to some of the Noise lately
Adams Rubble: I think we need to turn off the noise to listen to people around us
Adams Rubble: to our loved ones
    Adams Rubble: to our neighbors

It was here that we both began listening and conversation stopped for a long while.

Riddle Sideways: in the midst of the Noise the small still voice
    Riddle Sideways: Mindfulness
Adams Rubble: a mindful voice is quiet yet booming
Riddle Sideways: at the stillness of an in-coming breath
Riddle Sideways: the continual rememberence to breath out through mouth
Riddle Sideways: when there are plans for events 2 hours from now to plan
    Riddle Sideways: ha
    Adams Rubble: :)
Adams Rubble: if everyone listens, will all taking cease?
Riddle Sideways: was always telling the kids; "if you are talking, you are not listening"
    Adams Rubble: :)
Adams Rubble: I was not expecting this to be a topic in which we switched from talking to listening to the silence
    Riddle Sideways: hmmm Expectations
Riddle Sideways: few topics go down the path planned
Riddle Sideways: shall the exploration be skipped
Adams Rubble: oh no, I was not making a value judgment
    Adams Rubble: just observing
Riddle Sideways: could be the fault of one having listened to the falling rain all night
Adams Rubble: early on I was about to fire off a response to you and hesitated, wondering if I was carefully listening
Adams Rubble: and then I kept hesitating
    Adams Rubble: and listening
Riddle Sideways: yes, happened here too
Adams Rubble: and here we are
Riddle Sideways: still have the unformed sentences held
Adams Rubble: listening can begin in PaB but then no logs :)
Riddle Sideways: yes. the gentle reader sees not the long timestamp gaps
Riddle Sideways: #7 Hello habit thinking
    Riddle Sideways: or not
Adams Rubble: Thich thinks we neeed to be mindful and say Hello Habit Thinking
    Adams Rubble: brb
Riddle Sideways: every mental formation needs to be recognized
Riddle Sideways: you are a very nice thought, thank you
    Adams Rubble: back, reading
    Adams Rubble: :)
Adams Rubble: the hard part is remembering :)
Riddle Sideways: give that thought due.
Adams Rubble: it was a very fast session
Riddle Sideways: yes, it did seem to go faster
    Riddle Sideways: poof
    Adams Rubble: :)
Riddle Sideways: breath in, breath out, poof
Adams Rubble: listening for breaths across a continent
Riddle Sideways: listening to the virtual lotus fountain
Adams Rubble: the sun is a bit higher and reflecting a golden hue off the trunk of the tree outside my window
Riddle Sideways: the sun is a bit higher, the fog pulled back
    Adams Rubble: :)
    Riddle Sideways: tress dripping
Adams Rubble: hello ducks on the pond
Riddle Sideways: not seeing them right now
Riddle Sideways: making plans to go out with recycling to look for them
    Riddle Sideways: making plans
Adams Rubble: they are in the picture you painted earlier :)
Riddle Sideways: yes, will go into plans and breath
Riddle Sideways: thank you for this time
Adams Rubble: the pond in the nearest park was still frozen yesterday--seagulls were standing on the ice in the middle
Adams Rubble: I will post the log
Adams Rubble: will see you tomorrow as long as I am not required elsewhere :)
    Riddle Sideways: thank you
Adams Rubble: have a very good day
    Adams Rubble: bye for now
    Riddle Sideways: ok, priorities
    Riddle Sideways: by All
