An appreciation of our weekly Guardian Meetings at the Village Hall by Agatha Macbeth

    2011.04.03

This session took place on the third day of the 'long weekender' to celebrate PlayasBeing's third birthday, and a festive mood was very much in the air.  Eliza began by thanking everyone involved in its organisation (prinicipally Aphrodite and Sun) and welcomed newcomer Xirana Oximoxi to the Guardian Group.

Eden Haiku: A very festive event Aphrodite, thank you for organizing it!

Aphrodite Macbain: Glad you enjoyed it !

Adams Rubble: The celebrations have been very nice. Thanks to all who had a part in it

Sun (sunshine.vayandar): Here is lots of pictures - just finished uploading : http://www.flickr.com/photos/sunvaya...7626418494430/

Maxine made a suggestion regarding her GoC slot:

Maxine Walden: wondering about the 1pm session; as I was not at yesterday's celebrations, would anyone like to convert that session to another wrap up session of a sort?I could do a 'future of PaB' sort of theme, but with so much energy, maybe someone would like to continue some other theme during that time

Steve brought up an interesting question:

Stevenaia Michinaga: where will we be in another 3 years?

We batted this one around for a bit and the consensus seemed to be that we were in good shape and evolving as a group, with general optimism being expressed for the future. Bleu then took us in another direction momentarily by reminding everyone of the Art as Being exhibition in the Dome and suggested that future AaB projects might be more of a group venture rather than individual, saying the idea was inspired by the two events Sun had taken us to the previous evening.

Bleu (bleu.oleander): lovely to combine music, art, dance and story
Eliza Madrigal: I've felt that dancing has bonded us in a funny way, too ...

Bruce suggested people giving topics to the working group to be discussed as we went along ('We're right now in a transition period -- new members, etc.') and reminded the group that a new WG was in the process of being formed. Adams mentioned that Sun and myself were now helping with the Chronicles and that her own work on them was progressing, with February and March now almost complete.  Sun asked for people to send photos to her for inclusiuon.  Adams suggested an in-world slideshow similar to the ones in the Museum and Eden complimented her on this ('Loved the ones in the museum Adams! Great slideshows!) and I second that - it's always great to see stuff from the earliest days of PaB and reflect upon its evolution.
Eliza made the interesting observation that she felt perhaps we needed to 'slow down' in order to see more clearly, prompting Eos to suggest perhaps making use of a pavilion-style break during Guardian sessions. We finished the meeting with a reminder from Eden about the Art as Being session at noon (which was excellent).
It is good to see the energy and enthusiasm which this weekend has bought to PlayasBeing as a whole.  It demonstrates that we function well as a group, and seem to see ourselves as a body rather than individual cells.  There is a feeling of coherence and wholeness about us right now, and the lack of ego trippers and personal agendas is refreshing indeed. At the same time, it was sad that some 'old faces' were missing (for me Fael in particular). Ah well, on with year four....

Eos kicked off the meeting with a mention of the end-of-month in-world retreat, which sparked off discussion about the RL one in Assisi later in the month, which in turn led to a general discussion about the life and times of St Francis. Interest was shown in who would and would not be attending. This led on briefly to mention of Seattle in September, which would be the next RL retreat, accomodated in a lighthouse!

Maxine Walden: It is quite special, had not been aware that there were bad old bosses on the island, (Vashon)
Aphrodite Macbain: early fall - should be beautiful and perfect for walks along the shore
Eos Amaterasu: as does SL retreat environment (grateful to Sophia Sharon)

Yes, thanks Sharon for your SL building skills :)

The conversation then turned to the use of voice in SL, and how the qualities and efficacy of it seem to vary for different people:

Wol Euler: I find the quality abysmally poor
Aphrodite Macbain: Yes, it's lovely when we can hear the voice, it adds a rich quality to the words
Aggers (agatha.macbeth): Well, it works great for some, not for others for some reason

Wol Euler: what I also find, and this may be just me, is that listening to voice prevents me following typed conversations or IM

Eden Haiku: Yaku is an ardent apostle of voice :))

Eos Amaterasu: strangely enough body language seems more important when in voice

Riddle Sideways: would change who we think they are

Wol Euler: I hate to hear my RL voice coming out of Wol's delicate body :)

And that was *largely* that, or so I thought. But as everyone was leaving Lucinda brought up a topic which was to raise no little contoversy over the next few days: the subject of underage avatars at PaB sessions. This followed on from a 15-year-old who had admitted his age to her during her session. As a result of my conversation with her, I threw out an email to the Guardian Group in general which elicited the largest PaB correspondence I had yet encountered, and was subsequently discussed by the Working Group.

Eliza was back this week (yay!) and started the session by having a disagreement with the dreaded lag monster, who sent her walking off deep into Mieum for about ten minutes.  When she returned, we began by discussing the matter of the underage visitor I had mentioned in the group email. This followed on from a discussion of the same topic in the Working Group.  What ultimately came out of the discussion was that we required to do 'due diligence' under the terms of the agreement with the Lindens:

Aphrodite Macbain: doing everything we can to follow the law

We discussed the idea of adding a line in the official PaB handout to cover ourselves:

Aphrodite Macbain: I like the idea of adding it to the notecard we hand out to newcomers. That way, they are forewarned

Eos Amaterasu: It's pretty straighforward to me: if someone discloses, or we find out, they are underage or otherwise not kosher, we follow what rules/procedures (eg. pls leave)
    Eos Amaterasu: that's all
    Aggers (agatha.macbeth): Agreed Aph
    Eliza Madrigal: yes, both
Eliza Madrigal: there is no harm in writing a line into the notecard
Aggers (agatha.macbeth): To be honest Eos, that's about all we can do

    We discussed age constraints:

Eos Amaterasu: can between 16 and 18 age person be present here?"
Aphrodite Macbain: I thought Linden's limit was 18
Eliza Madrigal: my understanding is that under 18 cannot consent to be recorded
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): M rating means over 16 years of age.
Eos Amaterasu: is that US law? Florida law? Linden law?
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): but consent it also a "?"
Aggers (agatha.macbeth): Under-18s cannot legally consent to anything

Eliza Madrigal: I should mention that Wol is following up on this to gain specifics

Eos Amaterasu: How about we just leave it to Wol....
Bruce (bruce.mowbray): We deinitely need more specifics -- from the Lindens themselves.
    Aggers (agatha.macbeth): I'd second that
    Bruce (bruce.mowbray): yes.
Aphrodite Macbain: yes, but it was worth a discussion. thanks Eliza

We then had a brief discourse on Observerm, our silent 'watcher' before moving on to the Chronicles:

Eliza Madrigal: :)) OK, well I wonder since we have Adams and Ag here if there might be anything to report on Chronicles? Nice to have to liasons in the working group this round

Adams Rubble: We are still Chronicling but some of us are busy with some other projects right now :)
    Aggers (agatha.macbeth) sighs

    :)

At this point, Adams drew our attention to the Art History meeting on a Native American sim later on that day:

Adams Rubble: The Art History workshop today at 12 noon will visit Virtual Lands, a Native American sim today and here from Nany Kayu who also is doing a project for the Smithsoian Museum of the American Indian
    Aphrodite Macbain: oh wonderful
Adams Rubble: from there we will go to see the work of a Navajo artist named Joe Yazzie who is installing a gallery at a place called Red Rock

Yaku mentioned donations.  Eliza informed the group that a donations box had now been set up at the pavilion, and that we were getting near to our monthly tier quotas, although there was still a shortfall.

I brought up the subject of the griefer who had appeared recently and caused the sim to crash:

Eliza Madrigal: And yes, Agatha, terrible griefer during Wednesday's session!
    Aggers (agatha.macbeth): Mmm, I heard

Eliza Madrigal: and he put up a shield
Eliza Madrigal: and then we were all booted
    Aggers (agatha.macbeth): A shield?
Xirana (xirana.oximoxi): very long ago we have had some problems in German Chat... and I think there's the possibility to mute this person
Eliza Madrigal: I couldn't do it fast enough
Eliza Madrigal: the shield came immediately
    Xirana (xirana.oximoxi): omg
Aphrodite Macbain: you were all booted out???
Eliza Madrigal: and then everyone was knocked off yes

Xirana (xirana.oximoxi): terrible... it was a kind of hacker then
    Eliza Madrigal: yes seems so
Aphrodite Macbain: Ther s/b some override when that happens
Eliza Madrigal: I've never had this

Yaku (yakuzza.lethecus): well, storm mentioned that it could partly be because the sim is running at maximum
Eos Amaterasu: yeah, a way to crash the system
Yaku (yakuzza.lethecus): and the griefer put it over the edge

We then wrapped up the session with Lucinda Aphrodite and Eliza practising their ejecting skills!  (Just in case) :]

    2011.04.24

A somewhat truncated meeting this one, being Easter everybody seemed to want to rush off early, so lucky there were no really pressing issues to discuss.  Druth brought up the subject of Playasbeing probably requiring a calendar with all the events which seemed to happening nowadays: a suggestion which brought universal agreement.

Druth Vlodovic: I was thinking that there seem to be a lot of events going on and a calender might be a good idea

This was something which in the past had never seemed necessary, as we tend to do most communication in the in the group via email. Druth said she was happy to do the actual calendar and would consult Storm as to the maintainence side of things.
Luci reminded everyone of the dream circle and Aphrodite did likewise about the first Original Face session.  After some general waffle and goodbyes the meeting then broke up.
Sadly, when I came to record the meeting in the logs, I discovered my chat had failed to record (grrr) and had to cobble it together from Riddle's, which he kindly sent to me.
