Pema Pera: (you can see from the state of the fountain: misty while we're
      doing the 90 sec)
arabella Ella: my graphics are real bad with m\y laptop unfortunately
Pema Pera: ah, that's a pity
arabella Ella: but i am trying to get a better laptop
Pema Pera: the misty waters look really nice
      arabella Ella: :)

      Pema stimulates Fefonze into discussion:

Pema Pera: Fefonz had a very nice observation
      arabella Ella: yes?
Pema Pera: about something he saw on the web, from a TED conference
Pema Pera: do you want to tell us, Fef?
      Fefonz Quan: ok,
arabella Ella: oooo I love the TED videos
      Mickorod Renard: great
Fefonz Quan: so i was watching a lecture someone sent me
      Mickorod Renard: Hi Pila
      arabella Ella: Hiya Pila
      Pila Mulligan: hi
      Fefonz Quan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO6XEQIsCoM
arabella Ella: i cant open browser while on SL or i risk crashing :(
Fefonz Quan: this is the link, but it is about 20 min, so i wouldn't expect
you to see it now :)
      Pema Pera: :)
Fefonz Quan: well, On that lecture which i thought was very clear and nicely
presented, he talks about choice and happines
arabella Ella: who is speaker Fef?
arabella Ella: do u know name?
Fefonz Quan: and his main idea is, (which he seems very surprised to say)
      Pila Mulligan: Barry Schwartz
      arabella Ella: ok ty
Fefonz Quan: (dr schwartz i think ara, but if you go there you'll find out
      quickly)
      Mickorod Renard: hiya Scath
      Fefonz Quan: Hey Scatach
      Pema Pera: Hi Schathach
      Scathach Rhiadra: Hello Mick, all:)
      Pila Mulligan: hi Scathach
      SophiaSharon Larnia: HI
      arabella Ella: Hiya Scath
Fefonz Quan: So this nice lecturer, Barry schwartz, wrote a whole book about
the connection between the choices and options to choose we have, to our
      happiness
arabella Ella: oh yes now i remember i think i have watched it too
Fefonz Quan: and he came to the conclusion that not only more options do not
      increase our happiness -
arabella Ella: it is very interesting by a psychologist
Fefonz Quan: in fact they decrease is
      arabella Ella: yes
      Fefonz Quan: it.
Fefonz Quan: and that's because in the process of choosing to many options
      paralyzes us, and frustrate us,
Fefonz Quan: and after we chose, we always consider that we missed a better
      option
      Fefonz Quan: .
arabella Ella: i remember that happening to me each time i visited a
supermarket in the UK where choice is fantastic but confusing
Fefonz Quan: the last one is also because when having more choice, our
expectation of the results get higher.
Fefonz Quan: (again, i recommend seeing it, much more fun than hearing me
      talking aoubg it).
Fefonz Quan: But my point is this:
      Pila Mulligan: hi Horalik
Fefonz Quan: though according to his definitions of happiness and what makes
us happy, he has a point well presented,
      Mickorod Renard: Hi Horalik
      arabella Ella: Hiya Horalik
Fefonz Quan: on a more basic level he misses the whole point.
arabella Ella: yes it is an excellent video
      arabella Ella: oh
Horalik Exonar: Hello to the conscious beings
      SophiaSharon Larnia: yes fefonz?
      Mickorod Renard: Hi,,is Horalik new?
      Pema Pera: hi Horalik!
      Scathach Rhiadra: he is gone
Fefonz Quan: instead of getting to the conclusion that less options are good
for us, he should now ask himself: why does it make us lesss happy.
Mickorod Renard: thanks,,was searchin all over for him
      Scathach Rhiadra: :)
Pila Mulligan: I'm listening to his talk while we chat here,Fefonz
Fefonz Quan: and then he might find much more profound and intersting things
Fefonz Quan: for example - if you presume that the clothes you buy will make
you happy, then he might be right
arabella Ella: what do you reckon he will find Fef?
Fefonz Quan: but if you se that our happiness is not jeans-oriented, and our
satisfaction does not depend on the external parameters of what we bought,
      Mickorod Renard: hi yichard
      Yichard Muni: Vendui mellyn iler
      Scathach Rhiadra: Hello Yichard
Fefonz Quan: if we can be satisfied and appereciate what we already have,
      Pema Pera: Hi Yichard!
      Mickorod Renard: shhhhhh
Fefonz Quan: than this new point of view makes his point very limitted.
Yichard Muni: Vendui mellyn iler = hello all the frinds
Fefonz Quan: surely, if i am not happy with my cloth/life/car, his multitude
options - unhappiness might be a symtom of it
      Yichard Muni: -
Pema Pera: (Fef, 90 sec :-)
      Fefonz Quan: symptom of it.
Pila Mulligan: he was born the same year I was, and what I am hearing most
easily is his nostalgia for times when things were less chaotic
Mickorod Renard: ok,,u can talk now fef,,,;_)
      Scathach Rhiadra: :)
      Pema Pera: :-)
Fefonz Quan: So, i felt that it's like someone found out, that if i have more
stairs to my apparetement, i will breath harder when getting home
Fefonz Quan: but the real reason is not the stairs, it is that i am in bad
      shape
      Yichard Muni: sorry, bad connexion
Fefonz Quan: and instead of worry about the number of stairs, i should do
      something about my physical condition
Fefonz Quan: So that's what i thought about it, if it makes sense here
SophiaSharon Larnia: you present children with a few choices, for similar
reasons...life is a smorgasbord of almost infinite choices...
Scathach Rhiadra: mmm, we very often look at curing the symptoms of a problem,
rather than looking for the causes
      Fefonz Quan nods to scath
SophiaSharon Larnia: id he saying thatwe are like children, i should listen
      before i say :))
arabella Ella: i can identify with what he said so much since where i live we
do not have much choice and i see the difference when i travel
Fefonz Quan: but i guess you are right about the children, Sophia :)
Pema Pera: the opposite of a great truth is a great truth . . . :-)
      SophiaSharon Larnia: :)
Pema Pera: being happy with few choices is important -- and appreciating many
      choices is too
Fefonz Quan: he also shows how people, while engaging in a certain activitie,
think all the time of otther activities they loose
Pema Pera: it's the appreciation that counts, as Fefonz indicated
Pila Mulligan: the visuals aids for his presentation are mostly cartoons :)
Fefonz Quan: and very funny ones :)
Pema Pera: For me, living in New York City is a funny situation, the super
abundance of choices. In a small town, I could go to any performance of
interest. In a medium size city choice would be difficult. In NYC there are so
ridiculously many choices that I cannot possibly care anymore about what I am
      missing every day . . . .
Pema Pera: so I'm happy to go for a walk in the park
arabella Ella: yes i can empathise with that Pema
Pila Mulligan: not to change subjects abrutly, but are there any new plans for
      tomorrow?
Fefonz Quan: Also, if i recignize that the shirt i'll by won't define my hapoi
nes for the next week, i take the choosing process much more lightly
Pema Pera: not really, no, Pila :)
      Fefonz Quan: recognize*
Pila Mulligan: just another day at Pab :)
      Pema Pera: yup
Pila Mulligan: Fefonz, I'd say a lot of the things he addressed relate to
      thepopulation explosion
      Fefonz Quan: why so Pia?
Pila Mulligan: he's comparing today to 40 years ago
Pila Mulligan: the population doubled in that time
Pila Mulligan: things got more crowded
      Pila Mulligan: and more chaotic
arabella Ella: it also relates to markets and to consumerism i think
Fefonz Quan: i think more to arabella point,
Fefonz Quan: population can be doubl, leading to less resources and options
Pila Mulligan: yes, he is not saying what I am saying, my comment is a
      cirtique :)
Mickorod Renard: kids are drwn into consumerism now,,
Fefonz Quan: i also think that when you know what you want, coosing is much
easier, though this is still 'within the story'
      Fefonz Quan: choosing
arabella Ella: yew Fef but i will never forget going to a supermarket in UK to
buy olive oil and finding about 20 choices and being so confused
Pila Mulligan: he notes that 40 years ago if you wanted a phone you rented it
from Bell and that was that
Pila Mulligan: compared to today's phone choices
Fefonz Quan: (and he says that's why that phone never broke up :))
Pila Mulligan: well, they broke but it didnt matter becaus eBell replaced it
Mickorod Renard: its even hard to choose how to pay,,for eg,,cash card or
      whatever
Pila Mulligan: I rememebr picking up the old phone and hearing a live person
      say, 'number please'
arabella Ella: and it is often so confusing to find out which is cheapest for
      same quality stuff
Fefonz Quan: i thought yesterday about the olive oil too :)
      arabella Ella smiles
arabella Ella: it is so much easier to have just perhaps three qualities
Scathach Rhiadra: so good reason to stop and drop what we have:)
Fefonz Quan: yet, i i know one that i like problem solved!
Mickorod Renard: creatures of habit seem far more content
Yichard Muni: okie, I need to go. Have a nixce discussion :-)
Pila Mulligan: brb - phone call :)
      arabella Ella: bye Yichard
      Scathach Rhiadra: bye Yichard
      Mickorod Renard: bye yichard
      Fefonz Quan: bye yichard
Yichard Muni: bell phone cal??? :-)
arabella Ella: how would u solve the problem Fef?
      Pema Pera: bye Yichad
      Pema Pera: Yichard
Fefonz Quan: the one i mentioned?
Fefonz Quan: just buy the one i like
arabella Ella: yes but ... how do you choose when there is so much choice?
arabella Ella: 20 brands of olive oil
arabella Ella: or 20 types of black olevi jeans
      arabella Ella: levi
Fefonz Quan: again, if i don't know any of them, surely some asking /tasting
      is needed
arabella Ella: not always possible ... rarely the case
arabella Ella: trial and error then i guess ... plus expense
arabella Ella: but i think another message is
arabella Ella: we should strive for a more simple life if we wish to be happy
      ... far from consumerism too
Fefonz Quan: i don't want to say that chossing doesn't need time to solve
Fefonz Quan: but if i know that it is not so important - i'll take teh nicer
      oil :)
      Pila Mulligan: hi Moon
      Moon Fargis: ^^/
      Scathach Rhiadra: Hello Moon
      Fefonz Quan: Hey Moon :)
      arabella Ella: Hiya Moon
      Mickorod Renard: hi moon
      SophiaSharon Larnia: Hi Moon
Pema Pera: gruess dich, Herr Mond
Moon Fargis: tach auch pema :)
Fefonz Quan: an considering the jeans - just by looking many are disposed
      immediately
arabella Ella: i think all this choice and happiness business must be more
tough for those who cannot afford much ... or who cannot afford the better
      olive oil
Fefonz Quan: well taht is easy arabella - the price range limit your choise!
Fefonz Quan: when i choose a car - and i know my price limit - infact it
reduces the option to very few]
      arabella Ella smiles
Pila Mulligan: and then there is always Consumer Reports :) (product reviews)
Fefonz Quan: and while i'm not letting myself go to "if i had more money i
would have a nicer car" - there is no problem
arabella Ella: but you are forgetting one thing Fef ... the present tendency
for ppl to live on credit
Fefonz Quan: i don'[t think we really want to get into economic issues, it is
      a littel of topic.
Fefonz Quan: (i never live on credit, just to say)
      Pila Mulligan: :)
Fefonz Quan: off-topic (among other typos along the road :))
      arabella Ella: apologies
      Fefonz Quan: not at all
Pila Mulligan: once upon a time, long ago in a distant galaxy, there was
something called customer service -- something else that really fits Dr.
Schwratz's 40 year time frame camparison
Pila Mulligan: where oh where did it go?
Pema Pera: well, Apple stores are a re-play of that, Pila :)
Pema Pera: btw, what do you all think about the new 90-sec silence, do you
      like it?
Pema Pera: something to be kept?
      Scathach Rhiadra nods:)
      Mickorod Renard: I like it
      arabella Ella: yes
      Pema Pera: me too
      Pila Mulligan: moi aussi
Moon Fargis: well i it ok but in the early monring it is.. hmm
      Moon Fargis: zz.zzzz.zz
Pila Mulligan: ... and that was 90 seconds of silence, Hamoody :)
      Moon Fargis streches himself
      Pila Mulligan: hi Corvi
      Pema Pera: hiya Corvi!
      Fefonz Quan: Hey Corvi :)
      Scathach Rhiadra: Hello corvi
      Mickorod Renard: Hi Corvi
      Corvuscorva Nightfire: Hi all1
