    Fefonz Quan: Hello all :)
Fefonz Quan: It's nice that you greet me on the chat long before i see you )
    Wol Euler: :)

    Fefonz Quan: not any more
Auroras Graves: sorry for asking, but it seems so quiet, is there a specific topic today ?
Pila Mulligan: it seems there isn't
Lia Rikugun: maxine has to travel today

chinese philosophy - and what is the I Ching ?

    Wol Euler: oh, that's right.
Pila Mulligan: my story telling wheels were spinning hhowever
    Wol Euler: fire away then!
    Pila Mulligan: hmmm
Pila Mulligan: anton interested in Chinese philsophy?
    Pila Mulligan: anyone*
    Lia Rikugun: yes
    Scathach Rhiadra nods
    Wol Euler: try us :)
    Fefonz Quan: yep
Pila Mulligan: this is about the origins of the I Ching, the oldest Chinese classic
    sophia Placebo: i dont know
    Fefonz Quan: chineses Pilasophy surely
Pila Mulligan: is anyne faimliar with the I Ching?
    Fefonz Quan nods
Lia Rikugun: no i dont know
    Scathach Rhiadra: yes
    Wol Euler nods
Pila Mulligan: well, it is a book composed of 64 chapters
Pila Mulligan: they are in turn composed of descriptions of images
Pila Mulligan: and the iages are composed of horizontal lines
    Lia Rikugun: aha
Pila Mulligan: the chapters are called gua, the lines are called yao
Pila Mulligan: each gua represents a kind of archetypal situation in life
Pila Mulligan: well, long long ago in a distant galaxy
    Lia Rikugun: ty pila
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: this is a story of the origin of the I Ching
    Lia Rikugun: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Ching
Pila Mulligan: in a time when mysticism was more prevalent

the origin of the I Ching- the Qi'lin appears - broken and straight lines on a tortoise shell

Pila Mulligan: there once lived a Chinese king named Fu Xi
Pila Mulligan: and in those times the Chinese believed in a mythical creature that was like a winged horse
Pila Mulligan: now Wiki does ont appear to tell the mystical part :)
    Pila Mulligan: so I will
Pila Mulligan: Fu Xi was sitting by a river one day
Pila Mulligan: when the winged horse creature appreared
Pila Mulligan: this creature appears every 500 years in China to impart some new knoweldge
Pila Mulligan: I wish I could rememebr its name :)
    Lia Rikugun: wow
    Scathach Rhiadra: Griffon?
Pila Mulligan: so the creature appeared to Fu Xi and showed him a tortise shell laying by the river
sophia Placebo: did the winged horse had a name?
Pila Mulligan: like a Giffon, yes
Pila Mulligan: the creature has a generic name
Pila Mulligan: somehitng like ___ Lin
Pila Mulligan: you often see it in jade carvings from China
Pila Mulligan: it is a sign of good luck
Pila Mulligan: so Fu Xi looked at the tortise shell and he noticed there were various cracks making lines in it
Pila Mulligan: and while he contemplated the lines the creature imparted to him the meaning of the lines
Pila Mulligan: some lines were broken and some were stragiht
Pila Mulligan: he was told the broken lnes represented yin, one half of the fundamental energy of the unverse
Pila Mulligan: the straight lines represented yang, the other half
Pila Mulligan: and combined into groups fo three lines each, these brokena nd solid lines composed the first guw
    Pila Mulligan: gua
Pila Mulligan: they were three lines then, later they became 6 lines, aboout the time of King Wen, in the 500 BC time
Pila Mulligan: Fu Xi is probably in the 3000 BC time frame
Pila Mulligan: so if you are into math, you can see that all the combinations of a three solid and /or broken lines make eight possible gua
Pila Mulligan: and the creature told Fu Xi those eight combination were the memebrs of a fmaily
Auroras Graves: i think i saw it used as an Oracle back in the 80ies, along with Runes and Tarots for clairvoyant use ?
Pila Mulligan: yes, it is often used as an oracle

combining 3 broken or straight lines gives 8 possible gua, these 8 combinations represent the family

Pila Mulligan: the family was a mother, father, three daughters and three sons
Scathach Rhiadra: Qi'lin, the mythical lion?
Pila Mulligan: the father was all yang lines, the mother all yin and the six children were the rest of the combinations
Pila Mulligan: yes, thank you Scath
Pila Mulligan: I believe you got it
Pila Mulligan: is it in wiki?
    Scathach Rhiadra: no Google search:)
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: now the part of the story I thought wouldbe most interesting is the characteristic ascribed to each of the family memebrs
Pila Mulligan: beacuse those became the fooundation of chinese philosophy
Pila Mulligan: and rememebr this is 5000 or 6000 years ago
Pila Mulligan: the moether and father are pretty easy, as everyone is alreayd fmailair with those roles
Pila Mulligan: the first son was called chen and his image was lightning and thunder and his charactersitic weas exictement
Pila Mulligan: the seoncd son was called kan and his image was an abyss of gulch and his characteristic was danger
Pila Mulligan: the third son was called ken and his image was a mountain and his charateristic was tillness
    Pila Mulligan: stillness*
Pila Mulligan: now if you think about it, and consider families oyu;'ve seen with three sons
Pila Mulligan: this has a ring of thruth to it
Pila Mulligan: the fist one is kind of spoiled and full of excited enrgy
    Auroras Graves: Hello Tarmel
    Pila Mulligan: hi Tarmel
    Scathach Rhiadra: Hello Tarmel
    sophia Placebo: hi tramal
    Lia Rikugun: hello tarmel
Tarmel Udimo: hello sorry I'm late, still have to fly here, can't transport
    Wol Euler: hi tarmel
Pila Mulligan: i was telling story about theorigin of the I Ching
    Fefonz Quan: hi tarmel :)
    Tarmel Udimo: nods
Pila Mulligan: by the seond son the parents have learned better and his eneregy is contained
Pila Mulligan: and that contained energy is sometimes dangerous
Pila Mulligan: by the third so the parents are more skilled, and so that son's energy is more naturall still
Pila Mulligan: plus he gets all the hand-me doens
Pila Mulligan: now the daughters ...
Pila Mulligan: the first daughter is sun and her image is wood and her characteristic is gentle
Fefonz Quan: (infact i saw mostly the second son is more energetic and the first more shy and introvertive, but just a note)
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: the second daughter is Li and her image is fire or light and her characteristic is brightness
Pila Mulligan: the third duaghter is Tui and her image is a lake and her charcateristic is joyfulness
Pila Mulligan: from these eight starting points of archetypes based on a family, Chinese philosophy grew into a very complex system of observation
    Pila Mulligan: the end :)
    Wol Euler: thank you
    Scathach Rhiadra: thank you Pila
    Lia Rikugun: yes thank you
Auroras Graves: the later borns are usually more the "rebels" when judging from the colleagues and friends :) but then, they dont live in Asia :)
Auroras Graves: Thank You Pia :)
Pila Mulligan: my expereince has been that these characteristics are not carved in stone, but you do see them form time to time
    Auroras Graves: sorry PiLA
    Pila Mulligan: and thank you

is the gua important for the education of a child in asian countries?

Auroras Graves: what happens, when back before the 1 child order in china, they had more than 3 sons or daughters ?
Tarmel Udimo: could someone give me the chat when Pila started the story
Pila Mulligan: I'm not sure Auroras, and I've also wondered just that
Auroras Graves: the chat should be on the Internet later on ?
Pila Mulligan: every traditional art and skill in China, from ceramics to acupuncture, as some basis in the yin and yang theory that these gua originated
Auroras Graves: where (and are ) the childs treated along their i Ching "Value" ?
    Tarmel Udimo: thanks everyone:-)
Auroras Graves: like in the western parts, where they often say that the child is Capricorne, or lion ?
Pila Mulligan: I don't understand the question Auroras :)
Auroras Graves: that they try to strengthen the attributs, or weaken them ?
    Pila Mulligan: ah, yes
Pila Mulligan: in one asian country even today every child is named according to thier gua
Pila Mulligan: I can't rmemebr the name of the country :)
Pila Mulligan: later in time the three line gua became a six line gua
Pila Mulligan: and one ealry arrangement of those gua was still called Fu xi's arrangement, even though he was long gone
Pila Mulligan: After Gottfried Leibniz (1646 - 1716) described the binary numbering system, a correspondent in China invited him to examine Fu Xi’s arrangement
Pila Mulligan: What he saw upon substituting a zero for each yin line and a one for each yang line was that Fu Xi’s arrangement represented a perfect binary numbering sequence
    Auroras Graves: Hello Yichard
    Pila Mulligan: hi yichard
    Lia Rikugun: hello yicherd
    Wol Euler: hello yichard
    Scathach Rhiadra: Hello Yichard
    Yichard Muni: Hello :-)
    Fefonz Quan: hey Yich
    Tarmel Udimo: hi Yich

different interpretations and translations of the I Ching

Tarmel Udimo: A friend has just recently sent me an email about a friend who has done a 'new version' of the I-Ching
    Wol Euler: mmm?
Pila Mulligan: they appear fairly often actually
    Pila Mulligan: interpretations
Yichard Muni: a new version of the I-ching? doesn't this happens only every 2000 years?
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    Auroras Graves: hahahaaaaa
Tarmel Udimo: he has apparently been working on it for 45 years, I am happy to give anyone a note card about it
    Pila Mulligan: cool
    Tarmel Udimo: hahahaha
    Yichard Muni: :-)
Tarmel Udimo: I've given the note to Pila but won't bombard anyone else unless asked:-)
Pila Mulligan: it seems his approach is combining the gua with astrology
Pila Mulligan: I had the pleasure of helping edit an I Ching translation about ten years, doing the english side of it with a Chinese scholar whose I ching study began before the communitsts took over
Auroras Graves: i fear i need to learn more about the basics of I Ching before loosing myself among the experts and end complety lost :) But thank You for Your offer
Tarmel Udimo: yes I think he has been an astrologer for many years too
Tarmel Udimo: I ca't vouch for him but for my friend
Tarmel Udimo: that's okay Auro, just spreading the word
Pila Mulligan: ten years ago* (the work took three years:)
Tarmel Udimo: that would have been an amzing experience Pila
Auroras Graves: is he using the western or eastern approach of Astrology, btw ?
Tarmel Udimo: hummm not usre I suspect both?
Pila Mulligan: have you ever seen a univeristy's thesis sotrage room?
Pila Mulligan: it is impreessive to see som many works on one place
Pila Mulligan: that is what I ching interpeetations are like
Pila Mulligan: there are thousnads of them from every angle
    Pila Mulligan: ceramics, acupuncture, astrology
Pila Mulligan: and all usually of interest and quality
Tarmel Udimo: hummm I was going to say like the bible but that didn't quite fit
Auroras Graves: i remember to have seen the pictograms with Chinese Medicine, yes

guas in the south korean flagFlagbig.GIF

Pila Mulligan: the Korean flag even has four gua on it :)
    Tarmel Udimo: which ones
Pila Mulligan: actually Tarmel it doe sfit
Pila Mulligan: the two parents nd two second children
Wol Euler: "ruled by madman", ...
Pila Mulligan: why the second I dpon't know :)
    Pila Mulligan: Souht Korea
Lia Rikugun: here it says heaven water earth fire
    Wol Euler: ah, sorry )
    Pila Mulligan: yes
Pila Mulligan: water and fire being the two second children
Pila Mulligan: heaven and earth the parents
Tarmel Udimo: wrong window wol? or where you refering to the Bible:-)
    Scathach Rhiadra: :)
Wol Euler: no, that was the meaning of the first of the four gua :)

moral mindset, philosophy, etc. from thousands of years ago - the ancient point of view

Pila Mulligan: the Chinese word Ching means a revered classic, like the bible
    Tarmel Udimo: grins
Wol Euler: a rather feeble attempt at humour, sorry.
    Pila Mulligan: I means change
Pila Mulligan: so itis the Bible of Change :)
    Tarmel Udimo: it was good
Auroras Graves: and awfull translations :)
Auroras Graves: refereing to the bible, sorry
Tarmel Udimo: mind you I am not from there so won't take offence>wol
Tarmel Udimo: yes all ways of our ancestors tryng to figure it all out
Pila Mulligan: the depth of study represented by thes eold traditions still has value
Tarmel Udimo: the problem of course is when a 2000 year point of view is still applied to 2000 years later with no updates
    Wol Euler nods
Tarmel Udimo: yes I agree, but I am sure the mind set was very different
Auroras Graves: is it also used as a moral guidance ? or more of a philosopy ?
Pila Mulligan: the mind set was different, mountains stayed the same :)
    Tarmel Udimo: heheheehe
    Tarmel Udimo: or did they?
Pila Mulligan: it is used in so many ways, Auroras, that it cannot be set ion one category
Tarmel Udimo: yes they both were/are Auro
Pila Mulligan: to me it is a very wholesome philosophy
Yichard Muni: maybe, today we more see ethics as being nice to others. 2000 years ago (and still today) their rather saw it as a state of balance in nature
Yichard Muni: next I-king change applies the dec 21 2012, lol
Pila Mulligan: I agree Yichard, and maybe Stim's ethics class will help delve into that balance
    Scathach Rhiadra nods
    Tarmel Udimo: nods
Fefonz Quan: Well other religions saw ethics as the words of (the) god(s)
Auroras Graves: oh, another end of the world again :) this time the Mayas ?
Tarmel Udimo: yes unfortuantely there was always a 'human' channeling those words
Pila Mulligan: yes, Fefonz, mystic times yielded many gods :)
Yichard Muni: but ancient point of view is not pointless; Today many people confuse yin-yand with a balance between good and evil, when in reality it is a balance between opposite forces, resulting in no harm and happiness
Tarmel Udimo: which always leads to......
Pila Mulligan: yep, the balance of yin and yang is comparable to the emptiness temr used in Buddhhism, in my opinion
Tarmel Udimo: yes its the old good and evil its been a curse and a blessing
Yichard Muni: there are some know exemples of checked speechs of a god, but not of "the" god. And still through a human medium, not directly observable
    Yichard Muni: Glong......
    Yichard Muni: Ding....
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    Fefonz Quan: Ching :)
Auroras Graves: May i wish everyone a good start into the new Week ? my Hubby is calling :)
    Yichard Muni: :-)
    Pila Mulligan: bye Aurora
    Yichard Muni: bye auroras
    Pila Mulligan: s*
    Scathach Rhiadra: bye Auroras
Fefonz Quan: bye Aurora and good week
    Wol Euler: bye auroras
    Lia Rikugun: byebye aurora
Tarmel Udimo: I accept that humans can channel all kinds of thoughts concepts etc its what creativity is all about, I just find it hard when people present themselves as an open channel to the 'one' god
    Tarmel Udimo: bye auro
Auroras Graves: and thank You for the insight into China philosophy, especial thanks to Pila
    Pila Mulligan: thank you

Yichard Muni: by the way, the 21th december 2012 is only a decade change in the numbering of years (Mayan numbers being based on twenty). So ther is no more somethjing special than on dec 21th 2000...
Yichard Muni: save the 2012 bug
Fefonz Quan: I find it hard to tarmel, and they are all over the [place
    Fefonz Quan: too*
Yichard Muni: the mayan calandar spans 64 million years
Tarmel Udimo: heheheh and what a fiasco that was, some companies made a lot of money on the 2000 change
Tarmel Udimo: yes they are Fefonz
Yichard Muni: oops, 64 millions years ago was precisely the end of the dinosaurs... so uour end could come for real in 2012, argh
    Scathach Rhiadra: haha
Fefonz Quan: it takes only one asteroid... ;-)
Tarmel Udimo: hummm not long now
Tarmel Udimo: well the climtae is already going balistic
Scathach Rhiadra: I have to go, see you all soon, Namasté
Wol Euler: bye scath, sleep well
    Fefonz Quan: bye Scath :)
    Tarmel Udimo: bye Scath
    Lia Rikugun: byebye scath
    Pila Mulligan: bye Scath
    Lia Rikugun: will leave too
Yichard Muni: hmm I love this one, 3 hours beore, lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZ7m6Tdz3Kg
    Pila Mulligan: bye Lia
    Fefonz Quan: Bye Lia :)
Wol Euler: and bye lia, schlaf gut
    Yichard Muni: bye
    Tarmel Udimo: bye
    Lia Rikugun: good night :)
    sophia Placebo: bye lia
    Tarmel Udimo: watching U-tube

Pila Mulligan: you click the image tool where you want the picture, Fef
Pila Mulligan: and then slect theimage fomr below
sophia Placebo: see you later all, thanks pila for the ching introduction , i spent most of my time here reading about it in wiki

    Pila Mulligan: bye sophia
    Pila Mulligan: thnak you

    Pila Mulligan: yes
Wol Euler: I have to go, I'm yawning like a world champion. Goodnight my dears, enjoy the rest of the day.
    Pila Mulligan: bye Wol
    Pila Mulligan: have anice eveninig
    Wol Euler: bye for now

    Tarmel Udimo: see you wol
Pila Mulligan: did you get it Fefonz?
    Fefonz Quan: on the way...

Pila Mulligan: I literally just learned this image tool two days ago :)
Pila Mulligan: did my first guardian thing and post yeaterday
Tarmel Udimo: oh congrats Pila, that's wonderful, I think you will be a great Guardian
Pila Mulligan: well, it was not too bad :)
Tarmel Udimo: didn't have to eject anyone;-)
    Fefonz Quan: yes, congrat's Pila
Pila Mulligan: just had to figure out the posting mainly
    Pila Mulligan: thanks
Fefonz Quan: and thanks for the helpful tool information
Pila Mulligan: no it was a peaceful assembly
Tarmel Udimo: hehehehe, Fefonz and I better show up at the next one and cause some chaos
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    Fefonz Quan: yep! ;-)
Fefonz Quan scratches his head pondering what mess can be done...
Pila Mulligan: kolohe is the Hawaiian term for someone who is mischeivous or naughty
Yichard Muni: where can I get this group tag Kolohe?
Tarmel Udimo: just start talking about God that usually gets a few heated conversations going :-)
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Yichard Muni: will do well with my hat :-)
Pila Mulligan: yes, the gods can bekolohe
Fefonz Quan: Yes, he kind of boils things (people) up...
    Tarmel Udimo: hahahaha
Tarmel Udimo: shhhhh he's a she
Yichard Muni: well, climate change may end the world, but nobody can pretend it is God's feat
Tarmel Udimo: that will really get things going
Tarmel Udimo: not this time Yichard
Fefonz Quan: in my language 'he' (the sound) is 'she'
    Tarmel Udimo: ahhhh
    Tarmel Udimo: that's clever
Fefonz Quan: and 'who' (sound) is 'he'
Pila Mulligan: that's what you get with a matriarchal culture :)
Pila Mulligan: or matrillineal I supose
Tarmel Udimo: yes the good old days:)
Tarmel Udimo: well its still current but
Fefonz Quan: and 'me' sound) is 'who'
Tarmel Udimo: so he = who = me
Fefonz Quan: in a way :)
Fefonz Quan: anyways, giving God gender attributes always sounded so funny to me
    Tarmel Udimo: yes exactly
Fefonz Quan: (even if i thought it existed ;-)
Tarmel Udimo: just don't think 2000 years ago it wasn't conceivable a 'woman' could have power
Fefonz Quan: sure. why not 200 yesrs ago turmel?
Tarmel Udimo: that template was unavailable
    Tarmel Udimo: well yes
Tarmel Udimo: even know for some people
    Pila Mulligan: Cleopatra?
Fefonz Quan: did you know in swizterlland women got to vote in the seventies?
    Tarmel Udimo: true Pila
Tarmel Udimo: and no didn't know that Fefonz
Tarmel Udimo: my problem has been that i was born knowing that we are all equal
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Fefonz Quan: yes pila, maybe the man writers of history just erased as they could all kind of women in power
Tarmel Udimo: just with different attributes and its gotten me into a lot of hot water
Fefonz Quan: yes, a big one Tarmel (the problem) :)
    Pila Mulligan: hi Zooey
    Zooey Cardalines: hi
Pila Mulligan: [we are about through observing 90 seconds of silence]
    Pila Mulligan: there, done
Pila Mulligan: would you like to take a seat?
    Zooey Cardalines: sure
Tarmel Udimo: yes rewriting of history a big one fefonz
Pila Mulligan: gender role illusions are one of the big sources of worldly problems
    Tarmel Udimo: hummm
Pila Mulligan: as are most role based sterotypes
    Tarmel Udimo: yes
Tarmel Udimo: Zooey have you been here before?
Pila Mulligan: have you been to this chat place befor eZooey?
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Zooey Cardalines: no, i've never been here

Pila Mulligan: Tarmel will explain :)
Zooey Cardalines: i've just been wandering and came across this
Tarmel Udimo: thanks Pila I'm sure you'll do a great job
    Tarmel Udimo: grins
Pila Mulligan: after you my dear :)
    Tarmel Udimo: after you :-)
    Pila Mulligan: Fefonz?
Zooey Cardalines: it's fine, i can just observe
Tarmel Udimo: sorry Zooey we're just having a bit of un
    Fefonz Quan: yep
Pila Mulligan: as you can see Zooey we are the epitome of politeness :)
    Tarmel Udimo: fun
    Zooey Cardalines: haha
Fefonz Quan: did you call me Pila?
Pila Mulligan: here is a notecard about Play as being - this place
Pila Mulligan: Fefonz is the senir player actually
Pila Mulligan: so he should do the explainng
    Tarmel Udimo: yes Fefonz
Pila Mulligan: but these chats are recorded and posted on a web blog
Fefonz Quan: Well it is a big thing to blame me of Pila :)
Pila Mulligan: so if you do not want you comments posted please let someone know
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Tarmel Udimo: actually our session is 'over' for today Zooey we are just the stragglers
