2009.08.04 13:00 - SL unwrapped again

The Guardian for this meeting was Mickorod Renard. The comments are by Mickorod Renard.

I arrive on time but Wol is first and keen

Wol Euler: you come most swiftly upon the appointed hour, mick.
    Mickorod Renard: Hiya Wol
Wol Euler: zomfg. and you sat beside me, away from your usual far corner! :)
    Mickorod Renard: yes,,I like punctuality
    Wol Euler smiles
    Mickorod Renard: he he
Mickorod Renard: thats a very fine outfot u have
    Mickorod Renard: outfit

How to spend money and time in SL

Wol Euler: thank you! One of SL's finest designers is having a huge sale, 50% to 75% off
    Mickorod Renard: nice
Wol Euler: I spent an obscene amount of money there nonetheless
    Mickorod Renard: lol
Mickorod Renard: I cringe every time i have to pay my tier
Wol Euler: oh, I'm surprised. I didn't know that you were a landowner.
Wol Euler: did you buy from Kira?
Mickorod Renard: no, I looked at the pro's and con's..in a nice way,,and decided to stay where I am
Mickorod Renard: I get less prims but more space

    Wol Euler: ahhh
    Wol Euler: fair enough.
Wol Euler: what do you do with it? are you building?
Mickorod Renard: well, I like building, but I am happy at the mom with what I have,,and now have little prim left
Wol Euler: care to tell the entire world what you have built? :)
Mickorod Renard: so i will wait until I am bored again and then build some more
Mickorod Renard: erm..just lil things,,I like to understand how they work
    Mickorod Renard: buildings are easy
Mickorod Renard: but making water run nicely was a chalenge
    Wol Euler: ooooh, yes
Mickorod Renard: and also making surf boards that work etc
    Mickorod Renard: flowers
    Wol Euler: wow
Mickorod Renard: I havnt the time really
Mickorod Renard: and the land I have is a quarter of a sim so its pretty spacious
Wol Euler: well, yeah, basic building is pretty easy. Making things look good is fiendishly difficult
Mickorod Renard: yes,,I am no master,,much I have I bought
Wol Euler: because it immediately gets you into textures (painting)
Mickorod Renard: yes, I would like to make t shirts with gimp

Wol Euler: (brb, tea is brewing)
    Mickorod Renard: 2 sugars please
Maxine Walden: sounds good right about now
Mickorod Renard: how are you Maxine?..I am sorry I havnt been to dreams lately
Maxine Walden: actually, Mick I have been away and so dream sem has not been happening
Mickorod Renard: ok, great in a funny way
Mickorod Renard: I am very interested in dreams and time as I guess you know
Wol Euler hands Mick a cup of tea. "One sugar only, more than that is bad for you"
Mickorod Renard: but I have probs finding the time
    Wol Euler: heheheh
    Mickorod Renard: owww,,ty
Maxine Walden: yes, Mick, me too...I surely know about finding the time..my problem too
Wol Euler: maxine, you have a new t-shirt on. What is the symbol on it?
Mickorod Renard: I do find it an issue justifying being on sl so much
Maxine Walden: you know, this is a t-shirt that someone gave me, don't really know what the symbol is, funny isn't it?
Wol Euler: it seems oddly familiar somehow, as though it had been in the news
Maxine Walden: let me try to think....
Mickorod Renard: excuse me staring at your chest Maxine
    Wol Euler: moin moin

Maxine Walden: haha, Mick. Yes, I had to look at me too re t-shirt

Is there a need to justify how much time we spend on SL

Mickorod Renard: may I ask a personal question?,,do you all have no issues with making excuses for coming onto sl so much?
Wol Euler: I'm glad you asked, I wanted to return to your comment :)
    Mickorod Renard: ;)
Wol Euler: [13:11] Mickorod Renard: I do find it an issue justifying being on sl so much
    Pila Mulligan: 'justifying' :)
    Wol Euler: right
    Wol Euler: to whom?
Mickorod Renard: yes, both to oneself(if nes)and perhaps to family?
Pila Mulligan: if family may need more of your time, then the concern is real
Wol Euler: well, I live alone so family doesn't enter into it. Work often interferes though, I do have to fight for my Friday morning sessions sometimes
Mickorod Renard: mm,,so I guess its all pretty individual
Yakuzza Lethecus: i always think about the issue how much time i ,,waste" here, but i think most of the contacts are better then gaming contacts and the people especially on pab are talking about sensefull stuff and especially true thoughts at least i have that feeling so it´s virtual but real communication
    Wol Euler nods
Mickorod Renard: yes, thats how I address my thoughts about it too
Maxine Walden: May I ask a question, perhaps of Wol? I returned from being away for last Sundays 1pm SL session here as goc, and claimed the chatlog but have not yet received the link to the log. And see that the log has not been posted.
Mickorod Renard: I have changed my habits, but one thing I am happy about is not watching television so much now
Maxine Walden: PaB and SL is a good alternative to TV
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: i also stopped watching tv entirely i only download the shows i want to see sometimes to watch them whenever i have time
Mickorod Renard: some people with little knowledge of sl have made me feel awkward, like as though Sl is bad
    Mickorod Renard: or wierd
    Wol Euler nods
Yakuzza Lethecus: right, for other people it´s a game
Pila Mulligan: some parts of SL probably are appropriately called bad
Wol Euler: they think it#s about cybersex probably.
Wol Euler: or a kind of shoot-em-up game
Yakuzza Lethecus: and they don´t see a difference between world of warcraft and 2nd life
    Mickorod Renard: yes
Mickorod Renard: I think its made me more homely,,otherwise I may have been going out more at night
Yakuzza Lethecus: then the first thing i heard about 2nd life was bad news about Pedophilia and casino gaming so i haven´t had an interest in 2nd life for years
    Wol Euler: right
    Mickorod Renard: ohh
Pila Mulligan: so doing PaB instead of a pub or TV seems reasonable
Yakuzza Lethecus: only from the news by that time, so stuff like that was preventing me from getting an interest at all
    Mickorod Renard: yes,,I think so
    Maxine Walden: thanks, Wol
Yakuzza Lethecus: otherwise i would have tried 2nd life years ago
    Wol Euler: yw :)
Pila Mulligan: yes, Yakuzza, there have been some sordid news reports about SL
Pila Mulligan: fortunately PaB seems to be PG
    Wol Euler: :)
    Yakuzza Lethecus: PG ?
    Wol Euler: "safe"
Pila Mulligan: that's a movie rating in the US for inoffensive material
    Wol Euler: "unthreatening"
Maxine Walden: I just don't talk about SL with most of my friends, don't think they would really get it...
Mickorod Renard: sl arived with me at a good time,,I had just returned back to the uk after a long stay abroad,,away from family and old friends sl has given me stimulus that otherwise would have driven me crazy to be without
    Wol Euler: no, same here.
    Pila Mulligan: (motion picture rating)
Yakuzza Lethecus: i don´t talk about SL in real life since nobody knows it and they consider it gaming
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: so i don´t even try to change the opinion
Maxine Walden: so interesting SL seems to be rather private with most of us re 'outside world' friends...
Wol Euler: yes, maxine, by and large
    Mickorod Renard: yes, I agree
Mickorod Renard: I wonder sometimes how long it will be before I get tired of sl,,so far no signs
Maxine Walden: hope it is a long while, Mick
    Wol Euler: agreed :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: in sl it depends on the contacts
Yakuzza Lethecus: and the events that are offered

    Who's is an SL veteren

Mickorod Renard: do you know of any record breakers in out croud?
Yakuzza Lethecus: or how you can build urself in, but that is still in the future for me :P
Wol Euler: storm is the oldest in-world, I think, if that is what you mean
    Maxine Walden: record breakers, Mick?
    Mickorod Renard: yes?
Maxine Walden: ah, yes, my understanding too, wol
Mickorod Renard: how long do you think storm has been on sl?
Wol Euler: November 2006, that will take some beating.
    Mickorod Renard: lol
Yakuzza Lethecus: he´s the oldest on pab or kira ?
Maxine Walden: and when did SL begin?
Yakuzza Lethecus: i know people age 2005
Wol Euler: maybe :) I woudln'T be certain
Yakuzza Lethecus: but not on kira only downstairs in a 70th shop around kira somewhere
Wol Euler: I believe it was 2003, I think htere was just a celebration of its 6th birthday
    Mickorod Renard: amazing
Mickorod Renard: some of course have several Avi's too
    Wol Euler grins
Pila Mulligan arrived a couple of months after Storm, in Jaunary 2007
Wol Euler: my typist arrived in July 2007
    Maxine Walden: really, Pila. Interesting
    Mickorod Renard: yes?
    Wol Euler: but not "wol"
    Pila Mulligan: :)

    What brought us to SL

Mickorod Renard: I guess it was curiosity that got most of us here?
    Mickorod Renard: was 4 me
Maxine Walden: wanting to follow Pema's notion of explorations of reality for me
Pila Mulligan: I read a news artcile about it in the New York Times, saying it would be useful for business meetings
Pila Mulligan: so oyu knew Pema before you came to SL Maxine?
Yakuzza Lethecus: i attended a real life philosophy course and i searched for forums and chatrooms about philosophy so i was curious if there might be anything in second life
Maxine Walden: yes, I met him at Princeton where he works in RL, was looking to go beyond my discipline and visit Princeton a couple of times a year and met him there
    Wol Euler: nice
    Pila Mulligan: :) cool
Yakuzza Lethecus: i am not really philosophical skilled but i found what i searched for here and even more where i can just hang around and wiki what they are talking about
    Wol Euler: :)
Pila Mulligan: 'going beyond' seems a common factor for us
Mickorod Renard: I read a book while I was away,,got stranded in bad weather and stuck at an airport on xmas eve,,finnished the book and at the end sl was mentioned,,so I looked it up when I got home
Maxine Walden: so many opportunities here on SL, ways of coming together and seeking things/folks of interest
Maxine Walden: but I must say that when I first began I got disoriented and distracted a lot on sl

    Yaku in pursuit of phillosophy

Yakuzza Lethecus: and i started looking for people to talk to in english whom were not gamers :)
Maxine Walden: so many flashy things to look at and pursue
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Mickorod Renard: Yaku, you ended up following a similar path to me
Yakuzza Lethecus: but sadly not many people like using voice around here
Mickorod Renard: I decided to see if there was much in the way of philo discussions
Yakuzza Lethecus: yeah, thats how i found herman´s philosophy class :)
    Mickorod Renard: me too
    Maxine Walden: herman?
    Yakuzza Lethecus: herman bergson
    Mickorod Renard: herman bergson
    Mickorod Renard: he he
    Maxine Walden: ah, yes, thanks
    Yakuzza Lethecus: http://thephilosophyclass.blogspot.com/
Yakuzza Lethecus: he´s a retired dutch professor
Maxine Walden: I just noticed, thanks to your link, Yaku
Mickorod Renard: I will tell you what I fear,,I am always trying to solve or do the imposible,,and I do worry that I may spend years on sl and never find an answer to anything
Yakuzza Lethecus: but there is more for example on thothica and open habitat there are interesting event´s during the week
Pila Mulligan: depends on the questions mick :)
Mickorod Renard: I dont get comfey at thothica Yaku
Yakuzza Lethecus: right now my only event there is saturdays 7pm gmt-1
Mickorod Renard: whats that about Yaku?
Maxine Walden: don't know what thothica is, expect it is a philo event
Yakuzza Lethecus: it´s a weekly phil discussion various topics
Wol Euler: I think it's a kind of proof of the "realness" of SL, Mick, that there might not be any answers, no more than in so-called RL
Yakuzza Lethecus: like can beauty be explained by science or what ever
Yakuzza Lethecus: reflection freenode got an event on evolutionary psycholgie there too
Yakuzza Lethecus: but it´s too late for europeans :(
Mickorod Renard: yes,,well its more about rl I wwant answers for,,but I think already know that the answers to ones questions only reach their optimum when u are about to die
Yakuzza Lethecus: i see sl as inspiration
Yakuzza Lethecus: i read and hear about so many new topics
Mickorod Renard: yes,, inspiration is a good way of putting it Yaku
    Wol Euler nods
Yakuzza Lethecus: so i think about how i can read better, how i am thinking, how even my virtual envrionment shifts my thinking and i never was on a place with such a high amount of college educated people :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: so the sociological background in sl is also very interesting
    Wol Euler grins and nods
Maxine Walden: yes, that is interesting, Yaku
    Mickorod Renard: yes Yaku,,same here

    Pema gets justly praised

Pila Mulligan: Pema deserves a lot of credit for creating these things we enjoy
    Maxine Walden: indeed, Pila
    Wol Euler: yes, definitely.
Mickorod Renard: he does, and if I may say so, so do you all too
Wol Euler speaks into the camera. "Thank you, Pema! We are very grateful"
    Mickorod Renard: he he
    Maxine Walden: smiles
Pila Mulligan: I have not found anyhting else on SL with such a wide range of information
    Pila Mulligan: amen, Wol
    Maxine Walden: waves to Pema
Pila Mulligan: (don't let it go t your head, Pema:)
Mickorod Renard: I dont know how he finds the time for keeping us in check and stimulated
Maxine Walden: pretty amazing isn't it, Mick, how he has so much energy and focus
    Mickorod Renard: yes, very
Pila Mulligan: this is an example of education without hierarchy
Mickorod Renard: and in some way that quality inspires me to make an effort
    Wol Euler: oh yes.
Maxine Walden: indeed, Pila, think that is one of Pema's goals...horizontal learning
Yakuzza Lethecus: i didn´t now about zen, buddism and retreats before sl
Mickorod Renard: I am all for horizontal learning
    Mickorod Renard: he he
Wol Euler thwaps you with a cushion
Pila Mulligan: different metaphor I think
    Mickorod Renard: grin
Maxine Walden: hmhmhm....just got the pun
Mickorod Renard: whats that again Yaku?
Pila Mulligan: I gave up on learning buddhism Yak, but it is fun to listen about it here -- almost like leanring
    Yakuzza Lethecus: what´s what ?
Mickorod Renard: ok,,sorry yaku, I see what u mean now
Yakuzza Lethecus: lol, pila thats what i think about philosophy :)
Pila Mulligan: it is sooo deep
Mickorod Renard: I have stopped trying to soak too much up,,but now I like to bathe in it
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    Wol Euler laughs
Yakuzza Lethecus: i gave up trying to understand what´s philosophy and to read about plato and the structure of philosophy in a ,,i want to understand !" sense
Wol Euler: perhaps you'll take it in through the pores?
Maxine Walden: ceasing to try too hard seems important...can soak it up better then, in my experience
    Wol Euler: yes :)
    Pila Mulligan: yes
    Mickorod Renard: yea
Yakuzza Lethecus: it´s just cool when people actually have no problem talking about oneness or what ever and then mentioning heidegger
    Yakuzza Lethecus: and dwelling.

    Dream workshop reminder

Pila Mulligan: Maxine, is there going to be a dream workshop at 2:00?
    Yakuzza Lethecus: tomorrow ?
Maxine Walden: yes, there is a 2pm workshop on dreams today...if anyone is interested...
    Wol Euler: definitely!
    Wol Euler: shall we?
    Yakuzza Lethecus: oh
    Mickorod Renard: wow,,
    Yakuzza Lethecus: right
Pila Mulligan: I'm always interested in dreams
Maxine Walden: have to go there, to the Kira cafe, so come along if it is of interest
Yakuzza Lethecus: i thought that was wednesdays
    Pila Mulligan: ok
Maxine Walden: I'm off, bye all

we all tp off to dreams
