Eden Haiku: Yes, I'm writing an haiku about a 9 secs I had this morning as I was walking. I was absent minded but a bird brought me back to awareness.

Gaya Ethaniel: The Thames is a fairly close to me too :)
Eden Haiku: Montreal is an island. There is the Saint-Lawrence ans a smaller river on the other side. I live near the smaller river.
Pema Pera: and I live close to the Hudson :)

Eden Haiku: Beautiful. I lived in New York for a year, in Soho. I love New York

Pema Pera: and Soho is a nice area too, but rather crowded and busy
Eden Haiku: Are you from Amsterdam originally?
Pema Pera: born in Utrecht, not far from Amsterdam
Pema Pera: I got my PhD in Amsterdam, and then emigrated to the U.S.
Pema Pera: And now I live very close to Amsterdam Avenue, only one block away . . . .

Pema Pera: Did you live in NYC for study, Eden, or work (or fun)?
Eden Haiku: I lived in Amsterdam in the winter of 2002. But I have never seen Utrecht.
Pema Pera: oh, next time you should go, only 30 minutes by train from A'dam
Eden Haiku: I was working on a poetry/performance.
Pema Pera: lovely canals in Utrecht, different style from Amsterdam

Eden Haiku: I went to the Hague and Delft and the island of Tershelling and Groningen. I love the Netherlands.

Eden Haiku: The story takes place in Salt Lake city in 1926 and New York in 1921. I did a lot of research at the Mormon Center on Broadway, in front of the Julliard School of Music.

Pema Pera: the Mormons are a very interesting movement indeed
Pema Pera: it's fascinating to see how religions change and evolve in so many different directions, especially when moving from one country to another
Eden Haiku: I remember how I made the connection between Duchamp and The Mormons now...
Eden Haiku: Yes, isn'it impressive howt5he first Mormons settled in South Lake City because it looked like the Dead Sea?

Pema Pera: such an amazing literal connection
Pema Pera: but that was not the connection with Duchamp, I take it :-)
Eden Haiku: I was researching Duchamp for my performance. He used to have a studio where the School of Music is now. I was so disappointed. I was with a friend from Montreal (he is a poet also and my best friend). We had walked all the way from Soho to there, on a very hot Summer day. I thought it was close by... I saw the Mormon Church in front and I suggested we visit the place. He agreed...I was welcomed there with great kindness and I studied with two missionaries for a few months. They even came to the performance!
Pema Pera: what a wonderful personal connection! I guess that's where art is springing from, from such intersections . . . . and how nice, that they even came to the performance! Did they comment on it, later?
Eden Haiku: They enjoyed the food a lot ;-) )Two tall young men with healthy appetites! It was in my loft, there were about 20 or30 guests. They commented that I did not telle thme the whole story before...
Eden Haiku: I don,t remember exactly what part surprised them the most...The past lives stuff maybe...

Pema Pera: I like the opening lines of that book: Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists.
