The Guardian for this meeting was Scathach Rhiadra. The comments are by Scathach Rhiadra.

    Bertrum Quan: hi Scath
    Scathach Rhiadra: Hello Bertrum!
Bertrum Quan: How are you this morning?
Scathach Rhiadra: fine thank you, and you?
    Bertrum Quan: Well, thank you.
Bertrum Quan: Ho w is the weather this morning in Ireland?
    Scathach Rhiadra: wet!
    Bertrum Quan: Spring showers?
Scathach Rhiadra: no, persistent rain, since yesterday
Bertrum Quan: A poor start to spring then...
    Scathach Rhiadra: :)
Scathach Rhiadra: at least the cold has gone, it lasted nearly four months, a very bad winter
Bertrum Quan: Perhaps snow would be better than a flood!
Scathach Rhiadra: true, floods are a lot worse
Bertrum Quan: That which is necessary for all life-- in over abundance kills.
    Scathach Rhiadra nods
Scathach Rhiadra: so how is the weather in California, sunny as usual?
Bertrum Quan: California is very large--too large for the sun to be everywhere at once!
Scathach Rhiadra: ah! so my idea of California is wrong
Scathach Rhiadra: always imagine scenes from San francisco or Los angeles
Bertrum Quan: Nothing in this world is as advertised it seems.
    Yakuzza Lethecus: morning
    Bertrum Quan: hi Yakuzza
    Scathach Rhiadra: Hello Yakuzza:)
Yakuzza Lethecus: the usual suspects :)
    Scathach Rhiadra: :))
Bertrum Quan: talking about the weather...
Yakuzza Lethecus: yeah, rainy but warm :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: over 10 degree celsius :D
    Scathach Rhiadra: ah, same here!
Yakuzza Lethecus: scath, are you still learning tibetan ?
    Scathach Rhiadra: yes
Yakuzza Lethecus: what kind of literature are you mainly focused on ?
    Scathach Rhiadra: Buddhist texts
Yakuzza Lethecus: yes, which of the 4 main roots
Scathach Rhiadra: though only starting with prayers now
Yakuzza Lethecus: i was just listening to some lectures about buddism the days before so i try to hear a bit out of just mp3´s :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: i am not deep in the matter
Scathach Rhiadra: I have some sutras in Tibetan, Samadhinirmocana Sutra, and the Dhammapada, so will be using them to practice translating
Scathach Rhiadra: also have a meditation book with the Tibetan text, will be a good exercise to translate it
Bertrum Quan: Does learning the lanuage deepen your spiritual experience?
Scathach Rhiadra: I think so, it means having to look deeper into the meaning of words and ideas, so you gain a greater understanding
Yakuzza Lethecus: And i think learning a new language has always great synergetic effects for the own thinking.
Scathach Rhiadra: you can get to see connections between different ideas or how they fit in the traditions, also context
    Scathach Rhiadra: yes Yakuzza
Bertrum Quan: Translation is always very interesting and somewhat different from the original.
    Scathach Rhiadra nods
Yakuzza Lethecus: i often think about the issue how different generations do not only new translations but also a different exegesis of the same old religious text depending on the changes a culture acquired
Scathach Rhiadra: yes, it is interesting to see how different cultures handle translations and how it changes with time
Scathach Rhiadra: if you read some of the oldest English translations, going back to the fourties and fifties, the Christian influence is very evident in how they use language
Yakuzza Lethecus: in case of the book of changes, pila told me that the translation of the german missionary is still the best
Scathach Rhiadra: there were some good German translators of Tibetan too, I think
Scathach Rhiadra: some of the recent 'modern' translations, or probable more commentries on texts, are so secular and trying to 'be all to all people' that you wonder why they are called Buddhist
Bertrum Quan: Why are they called Buddhist then do you suppose?
Scathach Rhiadra: it is a popular label right now I suppose
    Scathach Rhiadra: sells more books
Bertrum Quan: Tiger Woods as Buddhist...
Yakuzza Lethecus: hmm, i heard once that buddism only understands itself as a ,,religion" in america when it comes to tax issues
Scathach Rhiadra nods, and there is a Church of Buddhism or Buddhist Church
Bertrum Quan: I'm not sure that's fair to all of the folks are trying to seriously follow the varies braches of Buddhism. But I'm sure it relates to some.
    Bertrum Quan: branches/
Yakuzza Lethecus: nods, what means "buddism" anyway
Scathach Rhiadra: ah yes bertrum, I didn't mean to imply it was all like that.....
Yakuzza Lethecus: we made budda a buddist
    Yakuzza Lethecus: he wasn´t one
Scathach Rhiadra: mostly the more 'new age' groups
Yakuzza Lethecus: It´s even hard to understand how many different christianity´s are around.
Bertrum Quan: People are searching for meaning...
Yakuzza Lethecus: And another thought is if buddists in tibet are right now only united because they have external conflicts, because the dalai lama´s buddist root was even violently suppressing the others in the past.
Yakuzza Lethecus: There are so many thoughts i have a hard time to elaborate upon often.
Scathach Rhiadra: think we all have that problem Yakuzza:)
Bertrum Quan: Takes us back to translation...
Bertrum Quan: It we could only get to the essence of it--the atom of tru meaning.
    Scathach Rhiadra nods
Bertrum Quan: The Tibetian texts are themselves translations from earlier interpretations...
Scathach Rhiadra: true, the Tibetans translated the Sanskrit canon when it was still intact. a lot of it has been lost in the intervening centuries, so the translations are the only records available now
Scathach Rhiadra: and they are recognised as very accurate translations from comparisons with existing Sanskrit texts, so they are very important records
Bertrum Quan: Despite the integrity of the translations, they are (a) not complete and (2) filtered as all translations are.
Bertrum Quan: The gaps enhance the mystery.
    Scathach Rhiadra nods:)
Bertrum Quan: We bridge them with creativity and intuition.
    Bertrum Quan: And perhaps faith.
Scathach Rhiadra: and it is practice that really gets us to the essence, texts and teachings can only be pointers
Yakuzza Lethecus: take care you both!
Scathach Rhiadra: have a good day Yakuzza
Yakuzza Lethecus: cya next week :)
    Bertrum Quan: bye Yakuzza
Bertrum Quan: I should be logging off too. The hour has passed quickly!
Scathach Rhiadra: have a good night Bertrum
Bertrum Quan: Have a great day Scath.
