The theme for today is Equinox.
The Equinox is a dynamic condition of our planet and sun
in its yearly dance
of orbit and tilt.
On the Equinox,
the sun at noon is straight up - at its zenith
and balanced over the equator - not north, not south.
The word means "equal light".
The day and night have equal length.
Is this a time of balance?
Interestingly, no.
It's actually a time of greatest change.
If we are in the northern hemisphere
this is the time when "darkness" has its greatest "force".
The length of night is increasing at the fastest rate.
It's a time of turning inward.
This is also Harvest Time.
The time when the amount of food is at a maximum.
Is it a time to celebrate?
Or worry about coming scarcity?
Life has figured these things out long ago.
It predates modern ways, civilization, humanity
but not instinct and the feeling quality of living.
Harvest celebrations,
traditions like thanksgiving and halloween
observed in many cultures
align with these natural movements.
Holidays, the Equinox, just marks on a time cycle
invite us to pause
take time out from our plans and productivities
and recognize these ancient forces
around and within us.
How do these forces of light and dark appear in your life
at this time?
How do we humanise them,
invite them in,
respond to the transition,
acknowledge the harvest,
eat the fruit,
plant the seeds?
