Riddle Sideways: Good Morning Adams ㋡
Riddle Sideways: was not sure you would be here
Adams Rubble: Good morning Riddle :)
Riddle Sideways: so much going on
Adams Rubble: last Saturday afternoon I received an invitation to a Shabbat service at temple Emmanuel reform synagogue in NYC
Riddle Sideways: That is the huge one, right?
Adams Rubble: so I joined and was impressed both with the music and how inclusive many of the prayers were
Adams Rubble: it was a very nice experience
Riddle Sideways: Great
Riddle Sideways: so Zoom service
Adams Rubble: I wondered whether you had ever visited that sybagogue when you have been east
Adams Rubble: It was in facebook framework
Riddle Sideways: driven/rode around it many times, only been inside once.
Adams Rubble: there was an annoying delay which made a bit of an echo
Adams Rubble: they welcome people of all faiths to come to their services
Adams Rubble: had a male and female cantor and a fabulous choir of only four women and four men
Riddle Sideways: yes, Reform is very inclusive
Adams Rubble: sort of like the Kagyus in Tibetan Buddhism
Adams Rubble: one thing perplexed me
Adams Rubble: At one point the rabbi and cantor and held up a cup of wine
Adams Rubble: then the rabbi brought out a big loaf of bread
Adams Rubble: there was no eating or drinking
Adams Rubble: wondered about that in relation to the Chrostian Eucharist
Adams Rubble: is that an old custom
Adams Rubble: Biblical?
Riddle Sideways: yes, the opening Shabbat blessings
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: 1.light the candles. 2.blessing for the fruit of the vine. 3.blessing for the food of the earth
Riddle Sideways: not sure how food from the earth turned into the body of christ
Adams Rubble: phone call
Riddle Sideways: ha, was struck with "phone call" like that TV show "Who wants to be a Millionaire" where they can phone a friend for an answer ㋡
Adams Rubble: :)
Riddle Sideways: looking to Wikipedia; Eucharist comes from the Last Supper which was a Passover Sedar
Adams Rubble: no answers, only questions
Adams Rubble: yes
Riddle Sideways: so there was a blessing over the wine and then over the bread
Adams Rubble: ohh, so that is the connection
Adams Rubble: the seder is connected to the Shabbat service
Adams Rubble: right?
Riddle Sideways: yes
Riddle Sideways: all the same prayers, different tunes and some order changes
Adams Rubble: OK
Adams Rubble: that answers my question
Adams Rubble: not all just questions, some answers :)
Riddle Sideways: a home shabbat would just be the 3 stated above and then we eat ㋡
Riddle Sideways: a Friday Shabbat service starts with just the candle lighting
Riddle Sideways: later, after service would be an oneg(meal, desert)
Riddle Sideways: that would start after the blessing over wine and then bread
Riddle Sideways: add a blessing over children
Riddle Sideways: and some other good thoughts blessings
Riddle Sideways: ㋡
Adams Rubble: :)
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: have you ever gotten to see the Temple Emanu-El building inside?
Adams Rubble: not in RL but looked at images online
Adams Rubble: I did not know they were so welcoming
Adams Rubble: not going to NYC now because of Covid
Adams Rubble: do not want to ride the trains
Riddle Sideways: true
Riddle Sideways: huge building(s) can seem intimidating
Adams Rubble: yes
Riddle Sideways: when it was open... there would be many different services that you could pick through
Riddle Sideways: to fit your likes
Adams Rubble: they said there were minyan services in the weekday evenings that are apparently online
Riddle Sideways: it is big enough to have the daily minyan (requires 10 members)
Riddle Sideways: most other places can't muster the daily
Adams Rubble: there are over 2000 families in the whatever the Jewish name for parish is
Adams Rubble: believe it or not, there are loads of people in NYC
Adams Rubble: :)
Riddle Sideways: really?
Riddle Sideways: brother and sister in-laws met at Emanu-el
Adams Rubble: :)
Riddle Sideways: and two really good friends use to be members when they lived there
Adams Rubble: It is always interesting when these experiences come to one
Adams Rubble: suddenly a facebook invitation
--BELL--
Adams Rubble: and then the inclination to go look
Riddle Sideways: ㋡ great that one is open to those invites
Adams Rubble: Rubble sailing the seven seas
Riddle Sideways: yes, in the little boat
Riddle Sideways: just looking at their website and that one 'could' re-listen to so many past sermons
Riddle Sideways: a youTube channel of 84 videos of sermons
Riddle Sideways: the mind boggles
Adams Rubble: :)
Riddle Sideways: could surf the little boat through so many religions
Riddle Sideways: without leaving home
Adams Rubble: yes
Adams Rubble: so many religions close to home
Adams Rubble: was so surprised a couple of years ago to fnd a Jain temple a few miles from home
Adams Rubble: we had such a nice visit- a friendly couple gave us a tour and talked about their religion
Riddle Sideways: nice
Riddle Sideways: so many open and welcoming
Riddle Sideways: when one meets the people
Adams Rubble: yes, when we find out we are all one
Adams Rubble: no "I" in team
Adams Rubble: :)
Riddle Sideways: someday we should discuss the topic of this 'One' word use
Adams Rubble: okidoke
Adams Rubble: :)
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: is One a pronoun?
Adams Rubble: ohh, good question; often used as "one"
Riddle Sideways: a meta
Adams Rubble: grammarians probably have a special name when it used that way
Adams Rubble: so many meanings of one--e pluribus unim
Riddle Sideways: Oh No! Latin got in
Adams Rubble: well, thank for hosting today :)
Adams Rubble: I am glad i was able to be here
Adams Rubble: appreciative
Riddle Sideways: yes, nice you could make it
