Here I am standing in for a Storm again! Again comments are quite minimal...why clutter such stunning beauty when it an stand alone :)
2009.06.08 13:00 Appreciating Culture and Being.
http://playasbeing.wik.is/Chat_Logs/...ture_and_Being.
Stim Morane: Culture is also a hugely important factor.
kenji Pookes: I think understanding is possible, but direct translation is problematic. I return to the issue of counting. Counting seems like a very fundamental thing, but in Japanese they count quite differently from English speakers.
Stim Morane: But with respect to "Being", perhaps culture can be used skillfully to introduce, but not to capture the point.
More on Culture
Stim Morane: No, kenji ... I'm simply saying that some particularly fundamental facets of reality can be appreciated, with training, by all human beings. Meanwhile, many things are culture-specific.
kenji Pookes: I do know how to count cars, dogs, and cows.
Fefonz Quan: but you know how to eat them
Tarmel Udimo: our levels of awareness or insight is where the common ground is
Stim Morane: Culture is hugely important, but it's not truly fundamental in the sense used by contemplatives.
kenji Pookes: But awareness and insight are products of culture.
Stim Morane: Yes, that's true, kenji.
Tarmel Udimo: however someone who has expereinced Being on a deeper level may not be able to convey that to someone who has had a lesser expereince
Stim Morane: But the kind of awareness involved in contemplation goes beyond culture.
2009.06.09 07:00 - Journey, not Destination
http://playasbeing.wik.is/Chat_Logs/...ot_Destination
Riddle Sideways: at the beginning of 100 days, I wrote A.P.A. on my little white board
Riddle Sideways: co-worker asked "whatz dat mean?"
Gaya Ethaniel: What did you say?
Riddle Sideways: I think I gave 3 quick answers.
Riddle Sideways: just this bunch of letters... something for me to do... the answer to the question of the universe
Adams Rubble: :)
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Riddle Sideways: he just said "Oh"
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Riddle Sideways: they look at me that way, Gaya
Gaya Ethaniel: I know the look -_-
Adams Rubble nods
Adams Rubble: For the past year I have appeared a bit odder than I uised to to people
Gaya Ethaniel: An honest friend went as far as saying "why make it complicated?"
Adams Rubble: and to people here too (giggles)
Riddle Sideways: :) both
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Riddle Sideways: happy anniversery, Adams
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Adams Rubble: Thanks Riddle
Gaya Ethaniel: Think I said something like it's worth thinking about ...
Adams Rubble: I expect to get a good deal odder in the next year :)
Gaya Ethaniel: Odder? Puleez NoooOOooo heheheh
Adams Rubble: but hopefully more loving to those who think I am :)
Gaya Ethaniel: :)
Riddle Sideways: sorry to say it, but I am no odder then I have always been :)
2009.06.09 19:00 - Being earthy dangerous
http://playasbeing.wik.is/Chat_Logs/...rthy_dangerous
Eos Amaterasu: I saw a video once of lava from Hawaii volcano entering and steaming the sea
Pila Mulligan: :)
Eos Amaterasu: "beauty is that part of terror we are still able to bear"
Pila Mulligan: I can imagine -- I've seen it much less dramatically in person
Pila Mulligan: those videos are using from offshore
Pila Mulligan: I was just watching it go over the edge from above
Pila Mulligan: slow flow, nothing spectacular, but very moving still
Eos Amaterasu: like Hawai island existence itself?
Pila Mulligan: yes, the island I live on is growing every day
Eos Amaterasu: you're appreciating the presence of geology :-)
Pila Mulligan: :)
Laer on APAPB
Pila Mulligan: maybe om would work for Being in a mantra?
Pila Mulligan: chit could be awareness
Pila Mulligan: om chit something
Eos Amaterasu: well, you could say "the jewel in the lotus" is aka "the being in appearance"
Pila Mulligan: chit mane padme om
Eos Amaterasu: Sat chit ananda
Pila Mulligan: yep, that is the awareness I was thinking of
Pila Mulligan: and the sat
Pila Mulligan: but bliss does not appear here :) yet
Pila Mulligan: ananda
Eos Amaterasu: Sat : appearance; chit/citta : appreciate ; ananda : presence
Eos Amaterasu: the warmth of presence
Eos Amaterasu: the feeling of other as the feeling of self
Pila Mulligan: I get chit appreciate, presence may work with ananda, but the old mantra already has intepreted meanings
Pila Mulligan: as a mantra
Eos Amaterasu: we be playing
Pila Mulligan: it seems to me that the phenomenological element is the distinct exception from the mantra -- but maybe I'm wrongly understaning it
Pila Mulligan: it is fun to play with these things
