All guardians were present for this session, which had an unwitting theme of voices, perhaps beginning with the mention of lullabyes. :) This was a casual session, sparked by our continuing exploration of The Wisdom of Lived Experience.

    Agatha Macbeth: Right
    Agatha Macbeth: What's that?
Eliza Madrigal: :) it is the best time for morning practices...
Agatha Macbeth: 'My bike is broken' in Swahili?
    Agatha Macbeth: Ah
Eliza Madrigal: like, between 3am and 6am
    Agatha Macbeth: Right
Eliza Madrigal: it translates into something like the nectar veil
    Agatha Macbeth: Ooh
    Agatha Macbeth: Like bees
Eliza Madrigal: so, really evocative language
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Bzzz
Eliza Madrigal: I'd call it time conducive to gecko songs ...
    Agatha Macbeth: Oh amrita...right
    Agatha Macbeth: I get it
Eliza Madrigal: because you're not quite awake not quite asleep
    Eliza Madrigal: :)

    Agatha Macbeth: How is everyone?

Eliza Madrigal: Gaya taught me that and I think I still do it wrong
    Catrinamonblue Resident: looks cute :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Hehe

    --BELL--

    Snow...

    Eliza Madrigal: Feeling better Aph?
Aphrodite Macbain: a bit thanks :-)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Aphrodite Macbain: now for the cough phase
    Eliza Madrigal: fun :/
Agatha Macbeth: Set cough phase to stun
Aphrodite Macbain: I sound like a baritone atm
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :(
Eliza Madrigal: record some songs, quick hha
Agatha Macbeth ponders a baritone Aph
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Raffi :)
Aphrodite Macbain: Is it still freezing rain in Ontario Cat?
    Agatha Macbeth: The 3 tenors
    Aphrodite Macbain: yes- but deeper
Agatha Macbeth: Had some snow here Saturday but it didn't last long
    Aphrodite Macbain: hem hem hem
Catrinamonblue Resident: It's not terribly cold at all, this winter has been very warm
Eliza Madrigal envies even a little snow
Agatha Macbeth: You should move to Alaska
Catrinamonblue Resident: Your welcome to come visit anytime Eliza :) I have a spare bed :)
Eliza Madrigal: I think all that is needed to satisfy craving is a ski trip once a year :)
Eliza Madrigal: Ohhh, I'd love that Cat, thanks
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Mick :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Ere's our Mick
    Mickorod Renard: Hi
Aphrodite Macbain: We have had more snow in the past month than we have had in 3 years
    Aphrodite Macbain: Hiya MIck
    Eliza Madrigal: really!
Catrinamonblue Resident: Yes BC has been hard hit this year

    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi mick :)
Mickorod Renard: sory am late, just getting grand daughter off to sleep
    Eliza Madrigal: aw
    Aphrodite Macbain: aww
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Eliza Madrigal: siiigh
Aphrodite Macbain: do you sing her a lullaby?
    Mickorod Renard: ha ha ...me?
    Aphrodite Macbain: why not?
Eliza Madrigal: no worries Mick, we may be a small group today, since there was no new reading excerpt last week

Mickorod Renard: funny enough, i read her the little prince
    Eliza Madrigal smiles
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: smiles too
Agatha Macbeth: Did she party like it's 1999?
    Eliza Madrigal: hahahah
    Mickorod Renard: he he
Eliza Madrigal: that was a sneaky one Aggers
Agatha Macbeth is a sneaky person
    Eliza Madrigal: :)

Eliza Madrigal: So, is there something to begin with, something pressing or inspiring?
Eliza Madrigal: Looking forward to Maxine coming in on Thursday
Agatha Macbeth: Hello Raff, didn't see you there
Raffila Millgrove: Hi Aggers. yes i am "here" .. hi all.
    Agatha Macbeth: Oh Maxine! Woohoo
    Mickorod Renard: Hi Raffi
Agatha Macbeth: Will be great to see her
Raffila Millgrove: Eliza told me that we are just going to greet Maxine and like keep things very casual and that Maxine is all set to.. log in safely etc.
    Agatha Macbeth: (again)
Eliza Madrigal: It will... will probably be a little strange to come into SL after so long
Mickorod Renard: I read the Lucricius that Bruce sent
Aphrodite Macbain tries to remember what Maxine looks like
    Eliza Madrigal: like Maxine :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Like 2005 ;P
Raffila Millgrove: she's very old school like about 2005 ish.
    Raffila Millgrove: snap
    Agatha Macbeth: Indeed

    Aph rezzes a sculpture...

    session monday_002.bmp

    Eliza Madrigal: ^^
    Agatha Macbeth: Oh a pussy
    Aphrodite Macbain: an Alt Dog
    Aphrodite Macbain: Trump like
    Eliza Madrigal laughs
    Raffila Millgrove: lol
Agatha Macbeth: I prefer the cat
Eliza Madrigal is thankful to be able to laugh a little at this point
    Aphrodite Macbain: yes
Agatha Macbeth: Or at any point

Eliza Madrigal: But, picking up on what Raffi said...we talked in email about whether to have advanced questions, and I thought maybe later on for future sessions...
Eliza Madrigal: but that shouldn't discourage anyone from having questions at all
    Agatha Macbeth: Bleuji :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Bleu :)
    Mickorod Renard: Hi Blau
    Mickorod Renard: Bleu
    Aphrodite Macbain: waves at Bleu
    Bleu Oleander: hi y'all :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Bleu
Eliza Madrigal: Want to tell us more about your art project Aph? :)
Eliza Madrigal: although... speaks for itself, ;-)
Raffila Millgrove: yeah i was wondering if we should.. write a few questions in advance.. but.. Eliza said not for this time. maybe another visit.. as she will come again.
Mickorod Renard: I wondered whether we need a sort of round up of what we have done,,in a sort of sentence of less than ten words..cos thats about all I can manage to take on

We didn't get back to this in session, but please see the imploring email sent out, for help with PaB's 9th (!!) anniversary! Today, as I post this, Valentine's Day, is actually Eliza's PaB anniversary, but only 8 years. :)

Aphrodite Macbain: I dont have an art project- but Bleu has a great idea
Agatha Macbeth: (Oh it's a Bryn cat)
    Mickorod Renard: oh,,listens
Bleu Oleander: still trying to work up interest for a party/art project committee :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: is being silent
    Agatha Macbeth: Ah
Catrinamonblue Resident: I won't be around this year for the party unfortunately, possibly going to Cuba for 1st wedding anniversary :)
Bleu Oleander: did we decide on a date for the party?
Aphrodite Macbain: I can organize a poetry reading for the 9th anniversary
Eliza Madrigal: Oh, nice Cat! But no, no date yet... so still hopes
Eliza Madrigal: And Mick I like that idea, of sort of summarizing to begin session with Maxine

    --BELL--

Eliza Madrigal: although I'm really glad that she's been reading also
Aphrodite Macbain: It could be April 1 or 2: Friday or Saturday
Aphrodite Macbain wonders what is being discussed
    Agatha Macbeth: Trumpism?
Aphrodite Macbain: what did you mean by"Want to tell us more about your art project Aph?"
Eliza Madrigal: you set up the alternative dog...
Eliza Madrigal: may have been an opening for something?
Eliza Madrigal: if so was giving you a chance to say more
    Aphrodite Macbain: no
Aphrodite Macbain: It was a gift from Bryn Oh
Aphrodite Macbain: so I thought I'd share it
Mickorod Renard: we could come to the party as an animal?
Aphrodite Macbain: called an alternative dog
    Aphrodite Macbain: a party animal?
    Agatha Macbeth: Oh my

Aphrodite Macbain: I haven't done any new reading on Maxine's book
    Aphrodite Macbain: k
Mickorod Renard: I went to a party where all the ladies were dressed as cats once
Aphrodite Macbain: what were you dressed as?
    Mickorod Renard: I darnt say
    Eliza Madrigal: um... so hm...
    Agatha Macbeth: Hm
Eliza Madrigal: I didn't give any new reading, but is there anything that has been coming to mind?
Eliza Madrigal: I keep musing on super ego
    Agatha Macbeth: The overself?
    Aphrodite Macbain: o?
Eliza Madrigal: and that when I do that, I seem to split that further even
Eliza Madrigal: to a kind of spiritual ego on the other side of the critical ego
Bleu Oleander: what is a spiritual ego?
Eliza Madrigal: and the blank one in the middle....haha... definitely not in Maxine's book

Agatha Macbeth: Does a super ego require super dropping?

Mickorod Renard: I keep wondering whether the ability to sample all the aspects of the mind is a bad thing or a good one..maybe that ability shows a balance as oposed to being one sided?
    Eliza Madrigal smiles at Aggers
Agatha Macbeth pokes Liz in the ear

Eliza Madrigal: but I was considering that the super ego is described as critiquing... or giving the better way to do things, and the spiritual voice, is an affirming voice?
Eliza Madrigal: what people describe as 'still, small'
Eliza Madrigal: just odd thoughts but I wanted to throw them out there
    Bleu Oleander: interesting :)

Aphrodite Macbain: I always think of my super ego as my feelings of guilt and responsibility
Mickorod Renard: I believe when I read it it appeared as if the super ego was positive in some way
Agatha Macbeth: They landed in the pool
Eliza Madrigal: critique can be positive
Eliza Madrigal: but but super ego isn't thought of as accommodating
Bleu Oleander: I think an ego or if you call it super ego can be anything you want it to be ... anything your ego says it is ha ha!
    Eliza Madrigal grins
Agatha Macbeth: 'Super egos require super proof'
Aphrodite Macbain: The superego is the ethical component of the personality and provides the moral standards by which the ego operates. The superego's criticisms, prohibitions, and inhibitions form a person's conscience, and its positive aspirations and ideals represent one's ideal
Mickorod Renard: I wonder whether we all have a super ego, but that to get on we suppress it s outward image
Eliza Madrigal: nice Aph, where is that excerpt from?
Mickorod Renard: but inside its still there,,like the dark side
Bleu Oleander: the super ego is a human construct I think
Eliza Madrigal: ultimately all the concepts are tools ... and it probably isn't good to get attached about any of them
    Bleu Oleander: agree that
Eliza Madrigal: I am trying to be playful in order to show how it 'feels' to me sometimes
    Aphrodite Macbain: the Wikipedia! Eliza!
    Eliza Madrigal: ah, ty Aph
Aphrodite Macbain: a quote from Freud

    Concept of Ethical...

Aphrodite Macbain: I wonder about the concept of ethical
Bleu Oleander: I think ethics are concepts that we have come up with to help us behave in a socially acceptable way ... to help us get along together
Aphrodite Macbain: For me it is a social construct - a guide society develops- so it can make the "right" decisions" rather than part of our own psyche.
    Aphrodite Macbain: I agree Bleu
Eliza Madrigal: ethics is a large canvas, too :) there are 'rules' but also ethics in the moment may surpass those
Agatha Macbeth has a sudden craving for garibaldi

    --BELL--

Bleu Oleander: somewhat contextual in nature
Aphrodite Macbain: but ethics aren't absolute- society modifies and adapts them to the occasion
Eliza Madrigal: just going to finish the previous thought and then say no more about it...
Eliza Madrigal: a spiritual side of the super ego as I was thinking of it, wouldn't be without critiquing... but would be more like a permission giver or encourager rather than an ethics keeper as such
Eliza Madrigal: maybe just back to right and left hemisphere in diff clothing
Bleu Oleander: spiritual as in spirit separate from mind?
Bleu Oleander: or spiritual like intuition?
Eliza Madrigal: experienced in mind I think but not as mind... or, something like that - yes intuition

Aphrodite Macbain: where does intuition come from if not the mind and body?
Bleu Oleander: it comes from the mind ... a collection of all one's experience and memories
Aphrodite Macbain: yes-but an embodied mind
Mickorod Renard: I dunno,,I think 'Super ego' has too many historic connotations,,
Eliza Madrigal: yes I'm just speaking to the 'experience' how people feel or describe
Aphrodite Macbain: that idea of muscular memory
    Bleu Oleander: yes embodied mind
Aphrodite Macbain: super as in "outside of"
Bleu Oleander: we have neurons throughout our bodies
    Aphrodite Macbain: yes
Aphrodite Macbain: That's where I have trouble since if a super ego is outside our mind, where is it exactly?
Aphrodite Macbain: wonder what Freud meant
Bleu Oleander: a super ego is our mind I think
Bleu Oleander: just describes a feeling in the mind
Aphrodite Macbain: Perhaps it is the objective side while our ego is the subjective

Mickorod Renard: I wonder if we can think of another name for it so we can define it ourselves
Aphrodite Macbain: I would call it our conscience
Mickorod Renard: I can work with concience
    Aphrodite Macbain: :-)
Catrinamonblue Resident: the esence of who we are in the deep of the night, in the still between heart beats :)
Eliza Madrigal: the book Artists Way talks about 'the crazy maker' who gets in and ruins a project with rules or criticisms, and how that role is crucial, if in an appropriate place... coming in to edit 'after' the creative process rather than continually interrupting. I think that's too rigid too, but an experience most have had...
Aphrodite Macbain: but can it work with you? :D
Aphrodite Macbain: But it should be listened to
Eliza Madrigal: a lot of people won't start because of the overbearing way in which they hear that voice
Eliza Madrigal: but it isn't everyone's experience for sure
    Aphrodite Macbain: yes

Said the Voices in my Mind...

Catrinamonblue Resident: "don't look too deeply my dear you just might fall in" said a voice in my mind :)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Aphrodite Macbain: Ideally the creative mind ignores the criticism so that it can take off, step off the edge....
    Aphrodite Macbain: fly
Eliza Madrigal: familiar voice, to the voice?
Eliza Madrigal: some hear particular family members :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: he he
    Aphrodite Macbain: (my mother)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Mickorod Renard: I regularly get rid of my work as i enjoy the creating..need room to express
Aphrodite Macbain: But I would miss that voice if I doidn't hear it
    Eliza Madrigal smiles
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Aphrodite Macbain: a constant renewal MIck?
Bleu Oleander: I think all the voices we hear in our heads are ours ... even it we attribute them to others?
    Mickorod Renard: thats me
Catrinamonblue Resident: yes Blue me too :)
Aphrodite Macbain: we take them on board and remember them when needed
Aphrodite Macbain: (or even when not wanted)

Bleu Oleander: I have so many memories of my mother and my mother's voice that I can call up a "voice" that sounds very much like something she said or would say
    Aphrodite Macbain: nods
Aphrodite Macbain: and the tone of voice
Eliza Madrigal: :) do you hear her in your own also?
Catrinamonblue Resident: that's awesome Bleu :)

    --BELL--

Bleu Oleander: I hear her voice in my thoughts as something she might say, but I also have a memory of her actual voice
Bleu Oleander: I remember my father's voice also
    Bleu Oleander: auditory memories
    Eliza Madrigal: nice

Aphrodite Macbain: I talk to myself out loud saying "that was silly" or "dont do that" or "good for you"
Raffila Millgrove: I hear my mom's voice all the time. lots of funny phrsaes she used .. she was very colorful talker.
Aphrodite Macbain: the phrases are my mothers but the vopice is mine
Bleu Oleander: terrific book "the voices within" by C. Fernyhough
Raffila Millgrove: she would say: he should take a long walk off a short pier.. or.. who does he think he is? He's a little tin Jesus!

    session monday_003.bmp

Catrinamonblue Resident: I'm sorry I have to go, work related.. today has been brutal that way.....
Mickorod Renard: its such a complex topic I feel very under informed about it all
    Eliza Madrigal: (bye Cat)
    Aphrodite Macbain: take care CAt
    Agatha Macbeth: Bye Cat
    Mickorod Renard: bye Cat
Eliza Madrigal: love those quirky phrases Raffi
Bleu Oleander: I must go too ... nice to see you all :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: bye bye Bleu
    Agatha Macbeth: Aww
    Bleu Oleander: bye

Eliza Madrigal: seems a good 'use' of super ego, to talk to oneself like you do Aph
    Mickorod Renard: bye Bleu
    Eliza Madrigal: Oh, okay Bleu
    Eliza Madrigal: waves
    Agatha Macbeth: Byee
Aphrodite Macbain: Do you think it's my super ego Eliza?
    Aphrodite Macbain: It's my commentator
Eliza Madrigal: it seems like a super ego function, but I also think I could study a long time and not quite grasp the concept
    Aphrodite Macbain: nods, me too
Eliza Madrigal: personified self talking to self
Eliza Madrigal: like imaginary friends are, for children
Aphrodite Macbain: The running dialogue that runs through my head and occasionally it spills out in my voice
Eliza Madrigal: or some have said friends in SL are, haha
    Aphrodite Macbain: they're more unpredictable!
Eliza Madrigal: yeah, like Mick I'm not so sure what is regular ego or super ego but I find it helpful to categorize since I tend to hear criticism loudly
    Aphrodite Macbain: :/
Eliza Madrigal: so it is just useful to say, aha, YOU
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Aphrodite Macbain: do you ever answer back?
Eliza Madrigal: no it is enough usually, just to acknowledge the pattern
    Aphrodite Macbain: yes, occasionally
    Eliza Madrigal: the recurrance
Mickorod Renard: I hear critism loud but put it down to my lack of confidence or whatever I am suffering from

Raffila Millgrove: since i don't use or like the words or concepts of super ego.. it's hard to.. comment.. cause.. it's spoken as tho everyone agrees.. and not everyone does...
Aphrodite Macbain: true- but it helps to understand what Freud meant before we dismiss it
Eliza Madrigal: please do comment... that's why I try to qualify with 'my experience' or feeling etc
Raffila Millgrove: it's as tho people were discussing parts of an engine. parts of an engine.. are material goods. actual objects.. super ego is a theory.
Eliza Madrigal: that's how we end up with a clearer picture
Eliza Madrigal: we hear differently, even what seems a definition
Raffila Millgrove: so far no one has proven that there is such a "thing". it's a theory that it exists. to me.. it's one i don't like or accept.
Aphrodite Macbain: It might be useful to discuss these Freudian terms within the context of Maxine's book
Eliza Madrigal: so that's a valuable experience to include
Mickorod Renard: thats a good point Raffi..I dont think it should be in the book in a way,,as its ,presuming an identity
Aphrodite Macbain: Oops - I have to go. Bye dear Pablings
Raffila Millgrove: once you give something a "name" and get people to use that name.. it makes that "theory"more acceptable, more real.. than another one would be.
    Agatha Macbeth: Bye Aphling
    Mickorod Renard: bye Aph

Eliza Madrigal: Maxine's book gives different concepts and parallels... I definitely wasn't representing what maxine was saying with my riffing on the idea
    Aphrodite Macbain: :-)
Eliza Madrigal: Okay Bye Aph :)
Eliza Madrigal: but that's how I understand things... trying to play and stretch
Raffila Millgrove: yeah i got that Eliza. and i like how maxine.. does.. give lots of time/weight to alternative.. views.
Mickorod Renard: he he , its a tough one I recon
Raffila Millgrove: well i gotta run too. can't wait til Thurs! be so nice to see Maxine ..
    Raffila Millgrove: laters..!
Eliza Madrigal nods... she is writing to other therapists as well
Eliza Madrigal: and specialists who focus on particular ideas

Mickorod Renard: I think there is another interesting thing too
    Eliza Madrigal listens
Mickorod Renard: when we have done our other subjects..we have often come to a conclusion that we are like minded people in the group
Mickorod Renard: and i wonder whether we may all have a leaning towards a way of thought
    Eliza Madrigal: think so?
Mickorod Renard: we all seem to like to love the world and people

    --BELL--

Eliza Madrigal: I experience us as quite different... mostly... although maybe we have similar leanings in that way, yes, that's true
    Mickorod Renard: we are compassionate
Eliza Madrigal: or want to be :)
    Mickorod Renard: caring
    Mickorod Renard: perhaps forgiving
Eliza Madrigal: Pema always noted that PaBers give one another benefit of the doubt easily.... he said that was the most beautiful thing
Mickorod Renard: and for eg,,mostly likely to not appreciate super ego
    Eliza Madrigal: hahah
Eliza Madrigal: I took too long to make my point, or try to.... so I feel embarrassed
    Agatha Macbeth rubs Liz's back
Mickorod Renard: yes, I think that is a very useful tool we have,,but it may mean we cannot identify with some aspects that are removed from our thought
    Eliza Madrigal: yes

Mickorod Renard: I dunno if I am making semse
    Agatha Macbeth: 'Stop making semse'
Eliza Madrigal: can you say it in a diff way?
Mickorod Renard: once upon a time I liked being a devils advoate
Eliza Madrigal: do you think we are in a bubble?
    Agatha Macbeth: A lucifer's exponent
Mickorod Renard: yes, thats sort of what i meant Liz
Mickorod Renard: I am not being critical of us,,just an observation
    Eliza Madrigal: yes
Eliza Madrigal: it is a good question
Eliza Madrigal: and important to ask
Eliza Madrigal: I think... PaB definitely shouldn't be the only place to talk about things... it is kind of an oasis
Agatha Macbeth looks for palm trees
Mickorod Renard: if we are generally trying to reach a higher state of mind
Eliza Madrigal: but a skill of disagreeing politely and learning to express oneself without putting down anyone else should be a required one :)
Eliza Madrigal: I don't think we're really a contemplative group anymore
    Agatha Macbeth: Where's everybody gone?
Eliza Madrigal: we're here Aggers :)
Eliza Madrigal: take off sunglasses, hahah
    Agatha Macbeth: Quick exit

Mickorod Renard: like I dunno, say in some buddhist sense..we would have to become less attached to certain concepts
Mickorod Renard: it should allow us greater contemplative skills but would it also anaesetize us
Mickorod Renard: or some word like that
    Eliza Madrigal nods
    Mickorod Renard: or even sanitise
Eliza Madrigal: the balances are always changing
Eliza Madrigal:do you think there are pab concepts we are attached to?
Mickorod Renard: I dont know whather its egg chicken chicken egg,,but its likely that those of use who have stayed have become ........
    Mickorod Renard: conditioned also
Mickorod Renard: in a nice way
Eliza Madrigal: that seems true... in mostly nice ways, agreed

Mickorod Renard: I would like to say more open minded,,but
Mickorod Renard: can we easily allow ourselves to accept we have a super ego?
    Mickorod Renard: he he
Eliza Madrigal: hhaha,, okay now I get what you're saying!
    Mickorod Renard: :)
Eliza Madrigal: like a 'PaB mindedness' :) Do you remember Steven used to ask, "what mind are you using when you ___this or that___"
Mickorod Renard: well, its true I guess
    Eliza Madrigal: that's profound Mick

Mickorod Renard: even as i switch this off in a few minutes,,I become a diferent person
Eliza Madrigal: but can you channel your pab person?
    Eliza Madrigal: conjure Mick up?
Mickorod Renard: I do my best,,but my world is not ready for it
    Eliza Madrigal: :) understood
Eliza Madrigal: hope your hand is better btw..I have to go take A to tennis

    --BELL--

Mickorod Renard: yes ty a lil better
Eliza Madrigal: thanks for lingering Agatha
Mickorod Renard: ok see ya soon
    Eliza Madrigal: see you Thursday!
    Mickorod Renard: great chat
    Agatha Macbeth: Love to George
    Eliza Madrigal: ♥ ♥ ♥
    Eliza Madrigal: much appreciation
Mickorod Renard: see u soon Ags
Mickorod Renard: great u r back
    Agatha Macbeth: TC Micko
    Agatha Macbeth: onigokko
    Mickorod Renard: :)
    Mickorod Renard: ha ha ha
    Agatha Macbeth: Couldn't resist
Mickorod Renard: whens Wol coming back?
