This photo was taken in a magical place, whether inside or outside I cannot say.... a place where light and winds and shadows play freely, unencumbered by occasional crowds... undaunted by the task of springing back to life after many ferocious storms. It is a spot cultivated by many loving hands that have found refuge and wonder within a well-nurtured diversity, and I'm just happy and honored, to be its friend.

Build note: This is an Art as Being Happiness exhibit by Storm Nordwind 2012-02-15. This exhibit uses 30 prims and just one texture (Blank). The apparent different textures on the handle of the magnifying glass and the center of the lotus are changes from the default "Bumpiness" to siding and discs respectively.

Storm 3:
The word "happiness" comes originally from the Old Norse word "happ". Happ meant chance, fortune and luck.

Another word meaning luck was "sæl", and "sælig" in Old English meant lucky. This also changed to mean happy. But then over centuries the meaning changed further to innocent, foolish and simple, and the sound of the word changed too. Finally we have the word we know today: silly.

Why the ancient link between luck and happiness? Because luck was not regarded as randomness. It was a practical thing, an attribute a person had, a commodity that could even be inherited, lent or borrowed. And it often applied to a specific area of activity, such as fishing, or weather, or battle. It was something that you could lose by stupidity or inappropriate behavior but, if you cared for it, it could bring you success in that area, or least help you out of hardship. In an era when everyday practical success meant the difference between life and death, this seemed happiness indeed.

Wol:

This is a record or a reminder a moment of happiness.

I spent most of the silent day at the 2011 retreat on the verandah of our house, listening and watching and generally being still. (You'll infer from the presence of notebook and pencil that I didn't manage to be still all the time.)

I hope there will be a retreat in 2012.
