    2009.09.22 02:00 - Quiet

The Guardian for this meeting was Wester Kiranov.

     Just me and the birds.

2009.09.22 07:00 - Too Little or Too Much

The Guardian for this meeting was Riddle Sideways.

Yakuzza Lethecus: since everyone here already had a slot in play as being, what do you think about the silence sometimes, when everyone is there but there is no topic ?
Yakuzza Lethecus: is that supposed to be a good thing, or also percieved as terrible sometimes in ur eyes ?
Gaya Ethaniel thinks ... normal ...?
Yakuzza Lethecus: yeah, but for example when i bring someone new into the group and it´s silence
    Riddle Sideways: yes, normal
Gaya Ethaniel: I think I have gotten used to sit in silence with other people more and more over the years.
Yakuzza Lethecus: obviously i try to explain that even before i introduce someone and explain that theme sessions are to be prefered or pema or stims session because it´s just more crowded
Riddle Sideways: like RL, you bring a new person to a great circle... that turns out to be not so great that time
Gaya Ethaniel: ah I see ... it is true PaB silence isn't really typical in SL maybe.
Yakuzza Lethecus: usually i am fine with the silence because i also leave the pc even alone when i am on pab
    Yakuzza Lethecus: *sometimes*

Gaya Ethaniel: @.@ reads again ... too little chat at chat session makes it not a chat session ...
Yakuzza Lethecus: right, the perfect balance, silence is not even a bad thing sure

Gaya Ethaniel thinks Riddle talks like a Hobbit sometimes :)
    sophia Placebo: :))
Riddle Sideways: yes, grammar is what you see I need
    Riddle Sideways: Yoda

2009.09.22 13:00 - Berts Trip and Downs Syndrome

The Guardian for this meeting was Mickorod Renard.

Bertram Jacobus: yes 1 i was some days in austria, in the mountains. was VERY nice
Mickorod Renard: ohh yes, i remember you saying you were going there
Bertram Jacobus: yes. it was directly at the "zugspitze", the highest mountain in germany ...
    Mickorod Renard: wow
Bertram Jacobus: and the two days there were top weather
Bertram Jacobus: i went with such a mountain thing - how is it called - a lift to 2060 m high ...
    Bertram Jacobus: so beautyful
Mickorod Renard: wow,,on a cable car?
Bertram Jacobus: and a great sight over a big panorama ! - yes cable thing - like a bird in the sky ... :-)
    Mickorod Renard: yes..fantastic

Mickorod Renard: did you experience anything special that you can share with the downs syndrome girl?
Bertram Jacobus: no no not cold at all
Bertram Jacobus: i went with a t shirt walking
    Mickorod Renard: nice
    arabella Ella: how lovely
Bertram Jacobus: absolutely yes mick. she was so trustingly and confident and i could accept that very good
Bertram Jacobus: so we had two very close days
Bertram Jacobus: may be when you have that all day may be more difficult
Bertram Jacobus: but so it was great

Mickorod Renard: thank you, but I can remember looking into adopting once
Mickorod Renard: and when it was put to me that I could adopt a child with dificulties I didnt follow it up
Bertram Jacobus: i repeat : with some difficulties i can´t cope too for sake -
    Mickorod Renard: ;)
arabella Ella: as Bert said Mick ... it is not an easy task if it is 24/7
    Mickorod Renard: exactly
Bertram Jacobus: but i try to learn ... so many things "yet" ...
arabella Ella: we all do Bert and it is therefore important to maintain our curiousity
Mickorod Renard: but its nice to be open about these things,,it is better than storing away tabboo subjects

    2009.09.22 20:00 - Cathedrals of empty phenomenality

The Guardian for this meeting was Eos Amaterasu.

Billions of years passed, and, 4 bells later, Stevenaia appeared.

    stevenaia Michinaga: hello eos
    Eos Amaterasu: hi stevenaia
stevenaia Michinaga: all wrapped up for the night?
    Eos Amaterasu: 4 bells
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
    Eos Amaterasu: all silence
stevenaia Michinaga: always make for a lovely and peaceful evening
Eos Amaterasu: Yes.... guarding empty space
Eos Amaterasu: thiefs abound, seeking to steal space :-)
    stevenaia Michinaga: a sacred task
Eos Amaterasu: the pavilion is empty, the pavilion is full of light
stevenaia Michinaga: alwas impressed with what emptyness holds
stevenaia Michinaga: a place for new beginnings
Eos Amaterasu: the 10,000 things sometimes rain down in a storm
stevenaia Michinaga: and infinite beams of light in the sun
Eos Amaterasu: How are u doing on this summer/fall transition day?
stevenaia Michinaga: a transitionary day, as is every day :)
stevenaia Michinaga: time to go, see you another day, perhaps, sleep well
Eos Amaterasu: Thanks, indeed time for bed!
    Eos Amaterasu: Good night!

    2009.09.23 01:00 - Birth and Death

The Guardian for this meeting was Fael Illyar.

Archmage Atlantis: Seems we expect ppl to come here and "know" certain things already
    Fael Illyar: we do?
Archmage Atlantis: Are there no more teachers?....is self learning the entire new world?
Fael Illyar: lots of teachers at Buddha Center :P
Archmage Atlantis: Lots of opinions, I do not consider that teaching

Fael Illyar: I still do not understand what is the difference between this physical place and this "spiritual" space you compare.
Archmage Atlantis: You remember how Koya M got his name
Archmage Atlantis: Oh sorry, I got to a different space, hyperjumped?????
Fael Illyar: I do remember some of how Koya M got his name. Although, I'm not clear at all from where it came from :)
Archmage Atlantis: This forum, building, place in SL is as a RLplace to me
Archmage Atlantis: I understand it could disappear today
Archmage Atlantis: As did Alexandria Novus
Fael Illyar: yes... and yet it does not diminish it's importance.
Fael Illyar: if it did disappear, there could be a new place or perhaps a few of them

    2009.09.23 07:00 - Cat Being

The Guardian for this meeting was Eliza Madrigal.

Eliza Madrigal: Ohh..... one moment... stay here, brb
Lila Darkmatter: Darn! I was going to sign on as Ferocious....
    Lila Darkmatter: my wolf :)
Lila Darkmatter: I can't remember the password... has been soooo long
    Neela Blaisdale: haha
Lila Darkmatter: Alas, so you get my second 'normal' av :)
    Lila Darkmatter giggles
Neela Blaisdale: don't think we've ever met:)
Lila Darkmatter: Well pleasure to meet you :)
    Neela Blaisdale: you too
Lila Darkmatter: I am not quite as buddhist as Eliza... attend more cultural events... haha
Lila Darkmatter: Ferocious just lays around and listens
Lila Darkmatter: Do you feel differently as a cat?

    SnowLeopard.jpg

Lila Darkmatter: Or rather snow leopard?
Lila Darkmatter: I feel strangely comforted by the presence of a large snowy cat :)
    Lila Darkmatter giggles
    Neela Blaisdale: Being as cat:)
    Lila Darkmatter: :)
Neela Blaisdale: or Appearance as cat?
    Lila Darkmatter: MMMM
Lila Darkmatter: Cat as an appearance of Being
    Neela Blaisdale: Yes!

    2009.09.23 19:00 - yin/yang + me makes three

The Guardian for this meeting was stevenaia Michinaga.

stevenaia Michinaga: I am good, back to weekly tai chi again
    Paradise Tennant: cool
    Pila Mulligan: nice
Pila Mulligan: makes me think of chai tea

Paradise Tennant: what would we like to talk about tonight ?
    stevenaia Michinaga: nudge
Paradise Tennant: or did you come with a topic in mind steve :A)
    Paradise Tennant: :)
stevenaia Michinaga: brb, have to urge to practice that Tai Chi move
    Pila Mulligan: :)
    Paradise Tennant: lol
Pila Mulligan: verse 48 of the Tao Te Ching:
    Pila Mulligan:
In the pursuit of learning, every day something is acquired. In the pursuit of Tao, every day something is dropped. Less and less is done Until non-action is achieved. When nothing is done, nothing is left undone. The world is ruled by letting things take their course. It cannot be ruled by interfering.

Pila Mulligan: I always do it by myself, almost, and when people watch I sometimes get lost
    Paradise Tennant: ;)
stevenaia Michinaga: I find it best to watch yourself (mirror or video)
    Pila Mulligan: yes, it helps
Pila Mulligan: as long as you don't get lost in the watching :)
    Paradise Tennant: yes

Paradise Tennant: pila once explained .. an intriguing aspect of tai chi how it allows you balance external forces with internal forces ..
    Paradise Tennant: ....
Pila Mulligan: balance being the big idea

Paradise Tennant: never .. viewed tai chi as a martial art
Pila Mulligan: it really isn't essentially, but it can be
Pila Mulligan: those soft hands can be used to push away an intrusion
Paradise Tennant: hmm because it puts you in such an advanced stage of a balance it allows you to unbalance an attacker?
Pila Mulligan: or to stay where the aggression does not reach
Pila Mulligan: better to be empty than push back
Paradise Tennant: run between the rain drops
    Paradise Tennant: ;)
    Pila Mulligan: yes, exactly

Pila Mulligan: one of the most interesting phenonmena of this part of the practice is what I call shrinking
Pila Mulligan: it is not explained easily in scientific terms, except maybe as an illusion of perspective
Pila Mulligan: but it invovles shrinking in size as an aggression approaches
    stevenaia Michinaga: a psycologial tactic?
Pila Mulligan: you might want to explain it that way, maybe it is -- when I first saw it I was befuddled
Pila Mulligan: the teacher was doing some moves and then walked about ten feet further away and did the same ones
Pila Mulligan: as he walked away his body shrank much more than you wold expect
Pila Mulligan: so it looked like he was more than ten feet away
Pila Mulligan: ... you get it eventually
Pila Mulligan: it is not done conciously
    Paradise Tennant: blinks

Pila Mulligan: when you touch someone there is an instant kinetic reaction on contact
Pila Mulligan: so part of the practice is to be yielding when you are touched, to minimize that kinetic moment and, conversely, to be sensitive to the kinetic moment of an aggressor to redirect their momentum
    Paradise Tennant: hmm

    2009.09.24 13:00 - Environmental effects

The Guardian for this meeting was Storm Nordwind.

All was quiet for nearly half and hour. Then doug, Eliza and Yakuzza arrived.

doug Sosa: gave a speech at stanford this morning.
Storm Nordwind: How did it go?
doug Sosa: well, i was nervous.
doug Sosa: invitation to film the talk. it was on the draft of my book
Storm Nordwind: And was it filmed?
doug Sosa: no, it will be, in mid october.
    doug Sosa: new audience.
    Storm Nordwind: What size audience?
doug Sosa: about sixty i think, like this morning.
Storm Nordwind: And what are their qualifications and interests?
doug Sosa: hm, well its about the reponse to the economic, ecological and political crisis.
doug Sosa: so their qual is interest, as is mine.

Storm Nordwind: You see these as a single interlinked crisis, by the sound of things, is that right?
doug Sosa: yes, indeed. doesn't mean i'm right.
doug Sosa: well, they conveege, not cause each other.
Storm Nordwind: Do they have a common cause?
doug Sosa: yes, over industrialization and over commodification. . but i'd want to be more precise if i wasn't just getting
doug Sosa: my mind off the long drive.

Storm Nordwind: Is there a deeper cause though? What gives rise to a trend of over industrialization and over commodification?
doug Sosa: the issue can be put thus: the science is good, but the politics terrible. What to do?

Storm Nordwind: It sounds to me, doug (though I may be generalizing wildly), that you are trying to find a solution for the human condition and its selfishness! :)

    Eliza Madrigal: :)
doug Sosa: no, climate change is a specific issue, not one rooted in human nautre. It may be we can't do anything. We grow as a species spontaneously; slowing down and taking a husbandry approach to ourselves is a long shot, but worth trying.

doug Sosa: One of the things about second life is the cheap tranportation without the need for vehicles. No cars in these parts!
Eliza Madrigal: :) Yes, teleporting might help
Storm Nordwind: And yet it is badly contributing towards climate change!
doug Sosa: second life? the servers? the by products of the computers?
Storm Nordwind: And the laptops and the networks etc
doug Sosa: Paul and I would love to see actual numbers.
Storm Nordwind: They are extant, but don't ask me for where!
Yakuzza Lethecus: i already had the infrastructure before second life
doug Sosa: A grain of sugar can keep a fly flying for half an hour ( i am told).
Yakuzza Lethecus: to the costs are not only funded to SL :)
doug Sosa: how many joules to keep a person in second life for an hour?
doug Sosa: Including yes the manuracturing real costs of the computer, the waste products..
Storm Nordwind: And the fact that I'm force-cooling my graphics card with a fan... :)
    doug Sosa: shame!
    doug Sosa: :)

doug Sosa: the human brain runs on 7 watts. the most efficient computer on about 25?

    2009.09.24 19:00 - Lives

The Guardian for this meeting was Pila Mulligan.

Pila Mulligan: I am a freelance paralegal -- I do research and writing for lawyers
    Pila Mulligan: started in 1968

    Pila Mulligan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_and_literature
Pila Mulligan: me, yes, but for the income -- I am not licensed and have no ongoing obligations
    doug Sosa: you're quick
Pila Mulligan: I can walk :)
Pila Mulligan: 1st part of the job: research :)
    doug Sosa: interesting questions?
    Pila Mulligan:
the intellectual history of law -- first, the growing doubt about whether law in isolation is a source of value and meaning, or whether it must be plugged into a large cultural or philosophical or social-science context to give it value and meaning; and, second, the growing focus on the mutability of meaning in all texts, whether literary or legal.
Pila Mulligan: I like the premises
doug Sosa: I've been hit hard by legal stuff twice.
Pila Mulligan: sometimes the cases I work on are interesting
Pila Mulligan: some are just the usual cat fights
doug Sosa: you mean the building or the underlying ideas?
    Pila Mulligan: the underlying ideas
    doug Sosa: good stuff
Pila Mulligan: people can get hit hard by legal stuff
Pila Mulligan: it can be devastating
doug Sosa: yes. very tricky divorces.
    Pila Mulligan: ah, nasty cases
doug Sosa: someday maybe we can explore it.
Pila Mulligan: my favroite are land cases
    Pila Mulligan: titles, boundaries, etc
doug Sosa: Been thinking about land. Talked with an aid to the SF mayor about it today. lots of homeless, can we find a new way to homestead.?
Pila Mulligan: do I remember correctly that your area of expertise is related to psychology?
doug Sosa: yes. psychoanalyst.. eric fromm more or less.
Pila Mulligan: there are overlaps between law and psychology
Pila Mulligan: as you have no doubt seen
doug Sosa: yes. in psychology nearly everyone is more innocent :)
doug Sosa: What is the overlap you see?
Pila Mulligan: well, lawyers do a lot of drama, and the understanding of human nautre is essential to their success
Pila Mulligan: technically, sanity as an element of law is also an issue
doug Sosa: ah, rhetoric and narrative.
    Pila Mulligan: yes and competence
doug Sosa: now there is an assumption. meaning?
Pila Mulligan: well, I am chuckling here, actually
Pila Mulligan: a lot of popele question the sanity and competence of lawyers
doug Sosa: Sanity is very slippery from a psychological point of view.
Pila Mulligan: but I was referring to criminal and social competence as a legal term

The adventures of Pila, Doug and Eos in OpenSim

Pila Mulligan: opensim is the phenomenon created by Linden when they released their operating system for SL to open source
Pila Mulligan: people are setting up their own grids
Pila Mulligan: outside of SL, looks like SL, but is private
Pila Mulligan: like Threedee, he has been doing it for a while
doug Sosa: is that going to affect us here, should it?
Pila Mulligan: I think some people will leave here here for opensim
doug Sosa: should i be concerned, interested?
Pila Mulligan: interested more than concerned I'd say

    Pila Mulligan: http://www.osgrid.org/elgg/account/register.php

Eos Amaterasu: Downloading Hippo 0.5.2 OpenSim viewer
Pila Mulligan: oh, ok -- I have not used it yet :)
Pila Mulligan: I've just used the SL viewer
Pila Mulligan: please tell me how it works for you, Eos, I may try it too
Pila Mulligan: they let you register one avi per email address
Eos Amaterasu: Frig - just like the van Morrison song: "to be born again, in another space, in another face"
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Eos Amaterasu: Just logged in with Hippo....
    Pila Mulligan: cool
    Pila Mulligan: how is it
    Eos Amaterasu: Lot like SL
    Pila Mulligan: yes
    Eos Amaterasu: I've re-incarnated!
    Pila Mulligan: :)
Eos Amaterasu: Can you bring in your SL avatar?
Pila Mulligan: it is tricky, but it can be done --easier to rebuild though
Eos Amaterasu finds that he is himself in name only
Pila Mulligan: yes, you may need to create body parts

Eos Amaterasu: Pila in OpenSim looks like Pila in SL

Eos Amaterasu: How can you be in two sims at once when you're not anywhere at all?
    Eos Amaterasu: (Firesign Theater)
    Pila Mulligan: good question
    Pila Mulligan: imagination maybe :)
