Time Sessions -
Thinking about the time sessions, looking from a distance as one who has not been participating in discussions at PaB as I have previously, it seems there are less ‘theme’ session in the PaB group as whole, and almost less to ‘point to’ in regard to what the group is doing. When you read the chat logs, they are as vibrant as ever… there is nothing taken away from our discussions.

Theophany, Spiritual Light and the Transfiguration Exhibit

Next Meeting October 17, 2010 - 11:00 am SLT
The September workshop visited the Monastery of St. Catherine where we looked at a portion of the icon collection. Developing out of the liturgy, a cycle of Twelve Feasts was celebrated in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Among these was the Transfiguration, , a magnificent 6th century mosaic in the apse of the church.
Icons were venerated as a visual counterpart to the Gospel for those who were illiterate. After praying and fasting for a period of time before starting an icon, the first thing Byzantine icon painters did was to sketch a giant eye, the "eye of God" looking out toward the viewer. Some of the Church Fathers saw the icons of the Eastern Church are the membrane between the spiritual and material worlds. The image on the icons was a view into Paradise as it is after the end of the world, thus a view of a timeless world. The iconography remains the same in mosaics, manuscript illuminations and other visual forms but the figures do not have the same presence as they do in an icon.
The textual source for the Transfiguration is the synoptic Gospels. Christ meets together with Moses and Elijah on a mountain thus conveying Jesus as the fulfillment of the prophecies. Christ is transfigured into a powerful light, "uncreated light", overpowering the three apostles who witness the event. The early Christian ascetics also experienced light during their meditations and many of them equated the experience with the Transfiguration. For a long time there was discussion of whether these "visions" were in the mind or experienced bodily as well.
Light appears, often in connection to a deity, in almost all the spiritual traditions known. It is sometimes called uncreated light, divine light, or inner light. It refers to light not from the sun, candles or electric light bulbs, but a light experienced spiritually.
In the October workshop, we will look more closely at the Transfiguration and “uncreated light”. How does this light relate to the divine or inner light as it appears in other traditions? How is it reflected in the iconography?
