2017.07.29 13:00 - Title goes here
The Guardian for this meeting was Bruce Mowbray. The comments are by Bruce Mowbray.
Qt Core: Hi Bruce
Bruce Mowbray: Hi, Qt.
--BELL--
Bruce Mowbray: Sorry if you came last week -- because I couldn't get here.
Qt Core: np it was quiet, something i needed
Bruce Mowbray: :)
Qt Core: i need to drink, brb
Bruce Mowbray: kk.
Qt Core: back
Bruce Mowbray: Have you brought your bike out of winter storage yet?
Qt Core: no and i doubt i will, if i ever start doing some exercising this summer it will be by feet
Bruce Mowbray nods.
Bruce Mowbray: That's the only exercise I get - walking. I walk a mile every day, actually.
Bruce Mowbray: listing to podcasts or books while I walk.
Bruce Mowbray: After I finish "Anna Karenina," I'd like to listen to the "Foundation Trilogy."
Bruce Mowbray: (Asimov)
Qt Core: i quite dislike the part from my home to the park, as it is very "urban" and boring, but i also find quite stupid to take the car to go walking
Bruce Mowbray nods.
Bruce Mowbray: You're welcome to use my road . . . it is VERY rural.
Qt Core: love the trilogy
Bruce Mowbray: Five miles to the nearest village.
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, I've never read it, but it comes highly recommended.
Qt Core: while i have/had no problem with the transition between paper and ebooks i never tried audiobooks, and the idea does not really intrigue me
Bruce Mowbray: What I like about audio books is that I can listen while doing other things - like driving the car, walking, or housework.
Qt Core: there is the radio for that ;-)
Bruce Mowbray: Actually, I listen to mp3's that I've made of long essays or from mp4 videos, also.
Bruce Mowbray: I'll copy a long essay to WORD, then make an audio recording of that, then put that on my mp3 player for listening later.
Bruce Mowbray: I do my best thinking when I walk.
Qt Core: i think i'm lagging behind in the podcast and streaming tv dept.
Bruce Mowbray: It's impossible not to lag behind -- there is so much stuff out there.
Bruce Mowbray: If I go to YouTube on a subject I enjoy, I don't escape until I've downloaded about ten videos.
Qt Core: and while i have an usb stick... stuck in my car with some of my favourite music i find those song much better when randomly found in radio waves
Bruce Mowbray: Ahhh!
Bruce Mowbray: Here's what I use to download any YouTube file:
Bruce Mowbray: https://ytd-video-downloader-free.en.softonic.com/
Bruce Mowbray: (including music, of course).
Qt Core: something about impermanence and luck, maybe
--BELL--
Bruce Mowbray nods.
Bruce Mowbray: Letting the fates flow things to you at the "righ” time....
Bruce Mowbray thinks there is something not working right with his keyboard. . . Too many keys aren't making it into type when I push them.
Qt Core: when i need I use this https://youtubedownloader.com/ (last several uses were about downloading converting youtube music video as ringtones)
Bruce Mowbray: I've never used it for that . . . I just use it for downloading videos. It is free and works great.
Bruce Mowbray: If the vids are mostly talking, I might convert those to mp3's later -- for listening while I walk, etc.
Bruce Mowbray: I did that this morning with a talk that Steven Pinker gave at GOOGLE -- an hour long, then listened to it during my walk today.
Qt Core: the one i use converts it on mp3 while downloading... just did it a few days ago, an anime theme of the late '70 early '80 played on piano
Bruce Mowbray: ahhh!
Qt Core: (silly me)
Bruce Mowbray: :)
Qt Core: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS1GGLemAiQ (many colleagues almost hate me as i never have conventional ringtones)
Bruce Mowbray: ha ha.
Bruce Mowbray: My ringtone sounds just like a telephone. . . I mean, a regular telephone or, say, one from the 1950's.
Qt Core: The anime is about the yellowish robot the guy has on the piano itself
Bruce Mowbray: Cooool ringtone you've got there!
Qt Core: i had that for some time, but i prefer to be sure it is mine that is ringing, especially in crowded places
Bruce Mowbray: Magnifico!
Qt Core: it seems the guy made an entire album of piano interpretation of '80 anime theme
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, I am watching them right now...
Bruce Mowbray: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuvnT7wOf1E&list=PLR9ljdjhoPIrnnB0zUnQPAEyGC1tZO4Dm&index=4
Bruce Mowbray: 15 different ones.
Qt Core: some really hit me, those were the theme of my early teen years toons ;-)
Bruce Mowbray: ahhhh.
Qt Core: and i always loved big robots ;-)
Bruce Mowbray: :)
Bruce Mowbray: Speaking of BIG robots... just a sec. I also watched these in Ottawa, Canada this morning....

--BELL--
Qt Core: i'd like to know why SL strongly interferes with videos playing, if i keep the browser window hidden all is good if i try to keep it visible death-lag
Bruce Mowbray: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5m6tsfoNdc
Bruce Mowbray: I put the Second Life browser on the right and the browser (Chrome) on the left in a separate window. No problems so far.
Bruce Mowbray: Those are some BIG robots!
Qt Core: it always was that way, it interferes with the playing of the video, not the downloading part
Bruce Mowbray: Hmmm. Might be an ISP conflict.
Qt Core: why on daylight, by night it would be much better i think
Bruce Mowbray nods.
Bruce Mowbray: When I download movies, I do it through Indonesia -- where it is night when it is day where I am.
Bruce Mowbray: Solar eclipse is only three weeks from Monday. . .
Qt Core: lately i had to get a new router from my isp... and now i wonder why i can't download anything ;-)
Bruce Mowbray: oh my.
Qt Core: anything as no movies, strangely the sharing files app can't find anything anymore
Bruce Mowbray: When I download full-length movies, I go through a VPN in Indonesia.
Bruce Mowbray: Do you use Pirate Bay and a p2p file-sharing program like VUZE?
Qt Core: i'm ignoring the issue until i get a real craving for something to download ;-)
Bruce Mowbray: ahhh, good plan.
Qt Core: at the moment im more in a debate with myself about subscribing to Netflix for the incoming new star trek series (star trek discovery)
Bruce Mowbray: I have friends who subscribe to Netflix, not me, though.
Bruce Mowbray: They like it.
Qt Core: i fear i would like it too much... at least SL is interactive ;-)
Bruce Mowbray: Yeah, easy to get addicted to that stuff.
Bruce Mowbray: I watch about one movie per day as it is!
Bruce Mowbray: I watched "Minority Report" (again) last night. (Tom Cruise)
Bruce Mowbray: -- because I was thinking about "swarm intelligence" and I remembered those little spyder robots...
Qt Core: having got used to youtube videos i find it a little difficult to follow entire movies lately... an example, i have the Interstellar DVD a friend lended me on my desk, just in front of me now... i is there since almost six months...
Bruce Mowbray: Ha!
Bruce Mowbray: I watched "Interstellar" when it first came out. . . .
--BELL--
Qt Core: yes i went to the big screen too, but after a conference of an astrophysicist about it and the science in and behind it i wanted to see it again
Bruce Mowbray loves time-travel movies.
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, I understand that they employed a scientist to advise them on the specifics.
Bruce Mowbray tries to remember who that was. . . . Sean Carroll?
Qt Core: Kip Thorne
Bruce Mowbray: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/parsing-the-science-of-interstellar-with-physicist-kip-thorne/
Qt Core: won an Oscar with the movie, will probably win a Nobel for the detection of gravitational waves
Bruce Mowbray: Cool! Well, sir, it's time for me to be scraping up supper.
Bruce Mowbray: Have a fine weekend!
Qt Core: ty, enjoy
Bruce Mowbray: bye for now.
Qt Core: bye
