The Guardian for this meeting was Riddle Sideways. The comments are by Riddle Sideways.
Storm Nordwind: Good morning!
Riddle Sideways: looking outside, looking inside... Yes! Good Morning
Storm Nordwind: hehe :)
Riddle Sideways: 1sec
Riddle Sideways: ok. back
Storm Nordwind: welcome back
Storm Nordwind: A busy day for you with lots going on already?
Riddle Sideways: sort of. most computers did bad overnight
Riddle Sideways: umm, those big colored plot areas? somebody thinking of moving there?
Storm Nordwind: Yes they are. My understanding is that an LL ticket has been raised, but they're not eager to rake in more cash at the moment and haven't serviced the ticket.
Riddle Sideways: wow, would think they would jump on those
Storm Nordwind: It was supposed to have been all done and the rectangles gone many days ago
Riddle Sideways: does abandoned land cost?
Riddle Sideways: like for sale land
Storm Nordwind: Historically the price is L$1 per sqm, but who knows nowadays.
Storm Nordwind: Perhaps LL's staff count is way down from what I remember years ago
Storm Nordwind: Though they'll reboot a sim for you pretty quick
Riddle Sideways: never knew how many staff
Riddle Sideways: priority tickets
Riddle Sideways: early bell
Riddle Sideways: tried to catch us
--BELL--
Storm Nordwind: They were very open about their stats once. I remember collecting their monthly spreadsheets about attendance figures with breakdowns across the world. But they went 10 years ago I think.
Riddle Sideways: so, are the orange and green different choices? or options?
Storm Nordwind: Yes. Two possibilities. I don't know whether one is preferred and there's just a waiting for a LL OK, or what
Storm Nordwind: Visualizing land is sometimes a tricky thing
Riddle Sideways: ah, that seeing the future thang
Riddle Sideways: usually cloudy
Storm Nordwind: Wondering whether you've mist something?
Riddle Sideways: and if it involves Personal Preferences
Riddle Sideways: or Myst something
Storm Nordwind: aha!
Riddle Sideways: btw - couple a days ago saw that Myst is online now
Riddle Sideways: has been years and years since played
Riddle Sideways: Cd-rom days
Storm Nordwind: Yes. Tried it. Not the same IIRC.
Storm Nordwind: But there's a 25th anniversary edition kickstarter if you're interested
Storm Nordwind: All 7 Myst games together
Riddle Sideways: oooo 25 years and 7 versions
Storm Nordwind: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...on/description
Riddle Sideways: can only remember playing the first two
Riddle Sideways: ty
Riddle Sideways: yes, would have to be digital downloads. almost none of these computers have DVD players in them
Storm Nordwind: Right!
Storm Nordwind: I think mine do. Unused of course
Riddle Sideways: always remember playing in a dark room late at night with that scary soundtrack
Storm Nordwind: My memories of those days usually involved early versions of Civ. And early morning hours.
Riddle Sideways: Son played (still does a little) Civilization a lot
Storm Nordwind: I have played all 6 in the series. I think I have 5 of those 6 on one computer or another. Was a mod on a big forum. And so on
Riddle Sideways: back to the topic of SL waning in pop. What VR world is replacing SL?
Riddle Sideways: where did all the people go?
Riddle Sideways: High Fidelity is not quite ready
Storm Nordwind: Not to one single place, or we would probably be there ourselves
Riddle Sideways: OpenSim is getting old too
Riddle Sideways: yes, would jump
Riddle Sideways: Sansar seems not ready or open or ?
Storm Nordwind: Easy to use and easy to learn are two different things. The UI hurdle was always large for SL
--BELL--
Storm Nordwind: And the graphics really haven't kept pace with what people expect and demand
Riddle Sideways: add the VR headsets, hand controllers, etc. (at high prices)
Riddle Sideways: the learning curve on those is steep
Storm Nordwind: Plus - and this is a biggy - a whole generation has now grown up with a different gaming ethos. They are led to believe that a story will be made for them, that a game has an end, that they buy DLC to perpetuate it or move on. Open world, sandbox... it's not for most people. Too much work when there's instant gratification available so easily.
Riddle Sideways: yes
Riddle Sideways: well, mostly
Riddle Sideways: having 2 children in that generation, can see 2 very distinct differences
Riddle Sideways: one mostly likes the games you discribe
Riddle Sideways: one like blank canvases
Riddle Sideways: she plays 'games' completely differently
Storm Nordwind: There are well known halfway houses too. Like GTA V that provides the world, and missions, but you can do what you want within that world to some extent. But all without user generated content.
Riddle Sideways: Remembering that DnD could be played like that
Storm Nordwind nods
Riddle Sideways: was explained that first time by somebody that did not go on the adventures
Riddle Sideways: she ran a supplies shop (and bar)
Storm Nordwind: Ah yes. A Socializer in Bartle's Taxonomy.
Storm Nordwind: If you're don't know much about that, here's a good short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxpW2ltDNow
Riddle Sideways: now that was a lost memory set
Riddle Sideways: piles those links for later ㋡
Riddle Sideways: more Tabs!
Storm Nordwind: OK. After you've watched that 6 minutes video, here's a test to discover your own preferences: http://www.4you2learn.com/bartle/
Riddle Sideways: ha! thank you
Storm Nordwind: very important in gamedev
Riddle Sideways: good stuff
Riddle Sideways: need to know this later in summer
Storm Nordwind looks out at the night sky and wonders what it would take to give the stars some twinkle - though LL would have no motivation to do that.
Storm Nordwind: What is happening later this summer?
Riddle Sideways: when going to a wedding of 2 game developers
Storm Nordwind: Aha!
--BELL--
Storm Nordwind: If you would like to really wow them, download and learn Godot 3.0
Storm Nordwind: https://godotengine.org/ or on Steam
Riddle Sideways: Nephew is a History major that can spin a fabulious yarn
Riddle Sideways: thanks
Storm Nordwind: Another tab for you
Riddle Sideways: how long is the wait for Godot to download?
Storm Nordwind: hehe
Storm Nordwind: Sadly many Americans pronounce it in a (to me) jarring way
Riddle Sideways: Gaaaah Dough ?
Storm Nordwind: It should be GOD-oh, but Americans pronounce it like an Australian and say g'DOH
Storm Nordwind: meh
Storm Nordwind: Just the habits of my ear :)
Riddle Sideways: is good to be in the 'knows no better' category so it does not grate
Storm Nordwind: hehe
Storm Nordwind resists comments about us all supposedly having to make America grate again
Riddle Sideways: ooooo
Riddle Sideways: please resist
Storm Nordwind: I promise
Riddle Sideways: back to gamer types
Riddle Sideways: is that the way they see reality also?
Riddle Sideways: would that be how they play Life?
Storm Nordwind: Not necessarily
Storm Nordwind: It depends.
Riddle Sideways: yeah, was thinking that (just after hitting return)
Storm Nordwind: For example, if you check people's profiles on SL, you'll see a lot of people who specifically state, usually on their 1st life tab, that they keep their 2nd and 1st lives separate.
Riddle Sideways: yes
Storm Nordwind: The more separate they are, the more likely there is to be some kind of role playing going on perhaps
Storm Nordwind: And they may act very different in a game (or SL, whatever you consider it to be) than in RL
Storm Nordwind: They may do both! And get separate avatars for each way of doing things.
Riddle Sideways: yes, see that
Riddle Sideways: not so much with PaB
Riddle Sideways: but, outside of here
Riddle Sideways: Furries and Adventurers
Storm Nordwind: Hmm... perhaps not in PaB. Though we have do have several m2f roleplays at one level or another
Riddle Sideways: and there is a depth of thinking, speaking, exploring here that does not go on (so much) in RL
Storm Nordwind nods
Riddle Sideways: role playing Being a deep thinker
Riddle Sideways: :}
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: so much role playing
Riddle Sideways: "can you see the real me" and lots of other Who lyrics
Storm Nordwind: :)
Riddle Sideways: funny that when Alice and Botty don't know somebodies name they address them as 'Seeker'
Storm Nordwind plays it on Youtube, rapidly followed by "I'm a boy" - enforced roleplay perhaps?
Storm Nordwind: Oh do they? A good choice?
Riddle Sideways: The recent all time fav is now "Heart to Hang onto"
Riddle Sideways: besides being a finger twister exercise to play
Storm Nordwind: Always good practice :)
Storm Nordwind: Of course I had to play Ellen McLain's version of Still Alive after your messages the other day. :) (Because it's the best, by a long long way)
Riddle Sideways: drifting off on role playing all those songs
Storm Nordwind: hehe!
Riddle Sideways: many versions on youTube
Riddle Sideways: hard to see or even hear the word Cake seriously anymore
Storm Nordwind: Indeed!
Riddle Sideways: next time you see an Alexa, ask about GlaDOS
Riddle Sideways: very funny
Storm Nordwind: I like Ellen's version best because she uses almost no glide grace-notes, pitching really exactly (can't remember whether she was assisted in that) and the very light matter of fact way she sings.
Storm Nordwind: Don't know anyone with an Alexa, but will keep my eyes open
Riddle Sideways: she is/was the original voice
Storm Nordwind: yes
Riddle Sideways: so, probably knows exactly what the phrasing is/should be
Storm Nordwind: Wondering how many will 'get' cake references when it's dismantled in a few days
Riddle Sideways: ahhhh
Riddle Sideways: and it was/is toooo big to photo
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: yet, it is like some much else that was PaB in SL
Riddle Sideways: the third pavillion
Riddle Sideways: an archivist reading about a NDR
Storm Nordwind chuckles
Riddle Sideways: well, not so hard that one
Riddle Sideways: most railroads have 2 tracks
Riddle Sideways: except the mono-rails
Storm Nordwind: yup, and who wanted to call it a 'mono' rail?
Storm Nordwind: (except scripters)
Riddle Sideways: future readers Might think that way
Storm Nordwind waves to future readers
Riddle Sideways: literal game player types
Riddle Sideways: wow, face cat just stepped on tablet and went to a screen never seen before
Storm Nordwind is intrigued
Riddle Sideways: yet another Tab
Riddle Sideways: is the nice thing about these sessions... the throwing out of plans for today by many new Tabs
Storm Nordwind: haha!
Riddle Sideways: Adams usually laughs at the number of tabs too
Storm Nordwind: Hmm.. only 11 on Opera right now. Fairly moderate and restrained
Riddle Sideways: hmmm, 28
Storm Nordwind: The delay gave it away!
Riddle Sideways: giggles
Storm Nordwind: Though the inventory is open to read an NDR notecard. Does that count? ;)
Riddle Sideways: many saved to Pocket and Evernote
Riddle Sideways: hmmm, maybe counts
Storm Nordwind: We are old men of the Information Age. What if we were children? Would there be less wonder?
Riddle Sideways: don't seem to have a NDR notecard
Storm Nordwind: You do now
Riddle Sideways: ah, yes. got it now
Riddle Sideways: ㋡
Riddle Sideways: hope children always have Wonder
Riddle Sideways: thinking they always will
Storm Nordwind: But about different things in some cases, the same things in others
Riddle Sideways: that sparkle in a child's eyes
Storm Nordwind: I hope I never lose that :)
Riddle Sideways: or the dull look on faces of people shown the wonders of SL
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: YES!! hope to never lose that
Riddle Sideways: just yesterday! the wonder of picking up the most wonderious leaf in the driveway
Storm Nordwind smiles
Riddle Sideways: that little child's wonder that pops out
Riddle Sideways: comes in out of the Myst
Storm Nordwind: uh oh - tab count increased to 21
Riddle Sideways: hahahahha
Riddle Sideways: and now FireFox shares the tabs from desktop to laptop to phone to tablet
Storm Nordwind: Yes, I'll have that on Opera when the Ipad version has a build-in VPN as does the desktop
Riddle Sideways: oh reminded... need to look for a (closed) link
Storm Nordwind: I came across an unforeseen problem with VPNs (other than a drop in network speed)
Riddle Sideways: /listens
Riddle Sideways: found a DNS server "Pi-hole"
Riddle Sideways: to block Ads
Storm Nordwind: You are seen by some sites as coming from some obscure place. But that site sees hundreds/thousands of people coming from the same place. So they may not like it. If, for example, I fire off a request to random.org (for a true random number set) it will say "Error: You have used your quota of random bits for today. See the quota page for details." so I have to switch off the VPN first. Other sites think you are resource mining from them etc
Riddle Sideways: ah yes
Storm Nordwind looks up DNS server "Pi-hole"
Riddle Sideways: like all the ip from most universities are the same
Storm Nordwind nods
Riddle Sideways: had been reading threads on how to detect if somebody is an Alt
Riddle Sideways: and comparing ip addresses was not good enough
Storm Nordwind: Of course
Storm Nordwind: 23 tabs. And I really should go shopping!
Riddle Sideways: well, my friend. we could go on and on like this, but should go shopping and reading tabs
Storm Nordwind: I will leave you with Bartle then
Riddle Sideways: will leave you to go shopping
Storm Nordwind: Thank you for a nice warm start to the day :)
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: Thank you too
Riddle Sideways: go have your best shopping
Storm Nordwind waves
