Bruce Mowbray: The problem with puns is, once you explain that they are puns, they lose about 90% of their impact.

Korel Laloix: We were 4500 miles from the outbreak.

Bruce Mowbray: but it's not really an outbreak, of course.
Korel Laloix: And they did take blood on the way out.... And we have a self monitoring regimen we are using.
Korel Laloix: Very good question though.

Korel Laloix: Well, they did have a Marburg outbreak while we where there. But that is much less dangerous VHF.
Bruce Mowbray: Do you feel that your work in Africa was accomplished, Kori?
Korel Laloix: I know it will, but not sure the time horizon on it.

Bruce Mowbray: I'm guessing that you learned a lot in your dealings with the CDC.
Bruce Mowbray: ( Center for Disease Control) -- based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Korel Laloix: Not really. But only because I was very familiar going in.

Korel Laloix: Was good to see the highest set up though.
Bruce Mowbray: How did the matter with the motorcycle turn out?
Korel Laloix: Lots of smart and good people there.
Bruce Mowbray: (I would hope they are smart and good!)
Korel Laloix: Scary but we got what we needed.

Korel Laloix: One of a few times where I felt my life in danger when I was there.
Bruce Mowbray: Wow.
Bruce Mowbray: When that has happened to me -- something similar, feeling my life was in danger -- that turns out to be one of the most valuable experiences ever.
Bruce Mowbray: It is always something that I'll remember for the rest of my life.
Bruce Mowbray: You know, it also works the other way....
Bruce Mowbray: instead of something that scares us to death, it might be something that pulls us out of the fear....
Bruce Mowbray: something exponentially positive.
Korel Laloix: I hope so.. I am trying to wrap the trip in a good way in my memory, but having a hard time doing it.

Korel Laloix: Yes, there is a place near Moore that three of the most intense tornadoes on record cross paths.
Bruce Mowbray: nods....
Bruce Mowbray: and it hit those schools -- elementary schools, too.
Korel Laloix: They are getting better at building the schools now.
Bruce Mowbray: I would hope so.
Korel Laloix: The last one that hit a school, there was only one death from that if I recall.
Korel Laloix: The rest drowned to death in the flood basement as they could not get out.
Korel Laloix: But I need to read to make sure of that.. been a while since I read.
Bruce Mowbray: There were five children killed by a collapse of a building (an elementary school).... and drowned in the basement, yes.

Korel Laloix: Depends on the tornado I guess, but in terms of deaths, the chances are very small compared to walking across the street.

Wol Euler: more people die from choking on aspirins per year, but you don't hear about them because it isn't dramatic

Korel Laloix: I ride a motorcycle and go camping alone and go to Africa.... so some call me reckless. I just make what I think are sound decisions based on what I know and can find out.

Qt Core: i was thinking about the tornadoes you and Bruce were talking before, they are really huge nature events so one may evem say you can't really defend yourself, but here, only heavy rain and how we mistreated hour land and rivers

Korel Laloix: Tornadoes are usually not the most damaging things in a storm. There is heavy rain, hail, flash floods, straight line winds.
Korel Laloix: But when tornadoes go bad they go very bad.. mostly depends on location.
Qt Core: yes, Genova, where the most damage was done is unfortunately a sea town with mountains just behind it so all the water fallen on those mountains end up in some little rivers and floods the town
Korel Laloix: That does sound bad.
Korel Laloix: And that sort of thing does long term damage

Qt Core: in past decades in bigger cities most little rivers were "cementified" as in covered and or made narrower
Korel Laloix: That is a problem here as well.
Korel Laloix: Silly building ideas trying to "fix" nature.
Qt Core: i may find a little excuse in how urbanized and how little space we have in Italy, but in the USA...
Qt Core: at least this is how we see the USA from here a land of great spaces
Korel Laloix: I think our population density is much lower then Europe in general, but not sure.
