That afternoon, I was very pleased to see Vishnu, the avatar of an old friend of mine in RL. He had recently entered SL, and had just began to explore the virtual world a bit. As soon as I saw him walking up to the tea house, over the bridge, Storm appeared as well.
Pema Pera: Hi Vishnu!
Vishnu Duranjaya: hi pema
Pema Pera: Hi Storm!
Pema Pera: Meet Vishnu
Storm Nordwind: A real avatar! :)
Pema Pera: Vishnu, meet Storm
Vishnu Duranjaya: hi storm
Storm Nordwind: I have met avatars of Vishnu before! :)
Vishnu Duranjaya: actually, that from which avatars came from….
Vishnu was refering to the Indian God Vishnu, the one who incarnates in the world, taking up human form as what has been called traditionally an avatar, the original Sanskrit term that then got picked up to describe how RL people `incarnate’ in virtual worlds . . . We were still standing outside, and hadn’t decided yet whether to sit down on the benches there or go into the tea house.
Storm Nordwind: Inside or outside?
Vishnu Duranjaya: Either is fine with me
Pema Pera: inside?
Pema Pera: it may rain soon again ;>)
Storm Nordwind shrugs
Vishnu Duranjaya: ok
Pema Pera: Vishnu is an old friend of mine in RL, Storm
Pema Pera: one of the few I am meeting here whom I have already met in RL ;>)
Storm Nordwind: I’m pleased to meet you Vishnu
Vishnu Duranjaya: Nice to meet you too Storm
Pema Pera: first time for Vishnu and me to meet in SL, or almost (a few minutes long we saw each other, last month)
Pema Pera: have you gotten used to SL a bit, Vishnu?
Vishnu Duranjaya: not really
Vishnu Duranjaya: finding my way through second samsara still
Pema Pera: hahaha
Pema Pera: yes
Pema Pera: samsara it is!
Storm Nordwind: second? one is bad enough! :)
Pema Pera: complex . . .
Pema Pera: SS, Second Samsara
I had told Vishnu about our PaB project before, and was curious to hear his feedback.
Pema Pera: have you gotten a chance to peek at the Play as Being blog?
Vishnu Duranjaya: looked at a few of the blog entries
Vishnu Duranjaya: SS indeed
Pema Pera: now I wonder about Second Nirvana . . .
Storm Nordwind: One might be excluded through greediness!
Pema Pera: what did you think about the blog entries?
Pema Pera: did something come across or was it hard to sense the context
Vishnu Duranjaya: interesting. but i am still getting used to SS conversations
Vishnu Duranjaya: the context is a bit opaque, but I was also not trying very hard to decipher it
Pema Pera: yes, it’s a different culture
Vishnu Duranjaya: part of it is that i am still carrying over some of the assumptions of RS. Slowly dropping them though :)
Pema Pera: Vishnu and I have exchanged email for years about the nature of reality . . .;)
Pema Pera: RS?
Vishnu Duranjaya: Real Samsara
Pema Pera: Ah!
Pema Pera: what do you think about the idea of 9-second practice every 15 minutes?
Vishnu Duranjaya: In a Zen retreat that renomenclature seems OK to me…..
Vishnu Duranjaya: its interesting
Pema Pera: have you tried it a bit?
Vishnu Duranjaya: unfortunately, not. I havent been to SL really since I came
Storm Nordwind: I think you can do it entirely in RL
Pema Pera: yes
Pema Pera: and just for a few hours only if you like
Storm Nordwind: This is just a convenient meeting point for discussion
Pema Pera: if you do it for a few days, say, one hour a day, that is then few x 4 x 9 seconds is two minutes in total . . . .
Vishnu Duranjaya: I figured. Let me try to excuse myself another way; Since I wasnt in the discussions I wasnt doing it in RL. Ah, I am just lazy
Storm Nordwind: A fine admission. I appreciate an honesty like that :)
Vishnu Duranjaya: Pema knows my laziness well enough.
Vishnu Duranjaya: So its easy to admit it
We talked about our RL backgrounds.
Storm Nordwind: What is your background in RL Vishnu?
Vishnu Duranjaya: Mathematics/Cognitive Science and Reality Studies….
Storm Nordwind: A very interesting mix
Storm Nordwind: Naturally informing each other perhaps
Vishnu Duranjaya: Somewhat. It could be better. But I try to give it a shot
Storm Nordwind chuckles
Vishnu Duranjaya: How about you Storm
Storm Nordwind: Well first i should say that I was breaking SL etiquette by enquiring into your RL background so soon
Storm Nordwind: But as Pema had broached a relationship I thought it OK in this occasion
Vishnu Duranjaya: Pema, sorry, I just felt like saying that we have moved from RL to RL/2 (email and meetings) to SL; a slow but steady shift of samsaras
Storm Nordwind groans
Vishnu Duranjaya: Thats ok
Storm Nordwind: Well my background is very wide!
Storm Nordwind: I currently teach engineers how to be other than unsociable geeks!
Vishnu Duranjaya: ok
Storm Nordwind: I do that in industry itself rather that at any academic institution
Vishnu Duranjaya: thats interesting
Storm Nordwind: My interest in Play as Being comes from a long spiritual study over the last 35 years
Vishnu Duranjaya: ok
Vishnu Duranjaya: pema, is there a structure to these discussions or do they tend to be free flowing
Storm Nordwind nods at the excellent question
Pema Pera: very free flowing
Pema Pera: no structure ;>)
Vishnu Duranjaya: ok
Pema Pera: but the theme is play and Being
Pema Pera: both
Pema Pera: and playing as Being in particular
Vishnu Duranjaya: hmm
Pema Pera: but more than half the time we talk about other things
Pema Pera: so everything goes!
The conversation moved to the notion of play, so central in our activities here.
Vishnu Duranjaya: SL is very suited to playing
Pema Pera: yes
Pema Pera: the more I do this , four weeks here now, the more I see how absolutely central play is
Pema Pera: for me at least
Pema Pera: in integrating what I have learned through contemplation
Pema Pera: meditation
Pema Pera: reading
Pema Pera: talking
Pema Pera: in short
Pema Pera: all that I have learned
Vishnu Duranjaya: i think thats why stories are so important in the traditional versions of contemplation; especially stories told tongue in cheek by a master/guru
Pema Pera: yes
Storm Nordwind: And perhaps here we have an emanation of Lila!
Pema Pera: YES!
Vishnu Duranjaya: hmm
Pema Pera: I love the lila notion
Pema Pera: you’ve used that too, right, Vishnu?
Pema Pera: in earlier conversations
Vishnu Duranjaya: yes
Vishnu Duranjaya: RL conversations
We returned to our main theme, PaB.
Pema Pera: in a typical zen story, a zen practitioner would spend, say, six years to look deeply into reality and then, say, twenty years to integrate what was seen into daily life
Pema Pera: What we’re trying to do here, as a community, is to start at the end
Vishnu Duranjaya: as in integration first?
Pema Pera: we start integrating and then we use that to invite practice to follow
Pema Pera: filling the gaps
Vishnu Duranjaya: ok
Pema Pera: so we shoot holes into our conventional covering of reality
Pema Pera: every 15 minutes a little hole
Pema Pera: and see what shines through
Vishnu Duranjaya: ok
Pema Pera: and let that seduce us to go deeper into it
Pema Pera: leading to natural immersion into what you might call forms of contemplation
Pema Pera: or just natural Being
Storm Nordwind: I sometimes find something quite startling
Storm Nordwind: When you shoot holes on the conventional covering of reality…
Storm Nordwind: istead of of just being able to see through…
Storm Nordwind: I find that reality, or what we conventionally call reality, falls right into the hole!
Pema Pera: yes, anything can happen, and it is wonderful when that happens — it is always fresh and surprising!
Neighbor Isen walked in. I was glad to see more of him, lately.
Storm Nordwind: Welcome Isen!
Pema Pera: Hi Isen!
Isen Enzo: Hiya.
Vishnu Duranjaya: Hi isen
Pema Pera: Come join us!
Pema Pera: We are talking about integration and meditation
Pema Pera: and how the 9-sec practice that I’ve suggested starts with integration
Pema Pera: every 15 minutes
Pema Pera: and so invites meditation
Pema Pera: rather than the other way around
Isen Enzo: 9 second practice, I like that…
Pema Pera: of course ideally both of them should go hand in hand
Pema Pera: yes, it started as an April fools joke
Storm refered to Isen’s new glasses, which made him look very distinguished.

Pema Pera: hadn’t thought about that one yet . . . .
Isen Enzo: His Holey ness..
Pema Pera: I thought you were holed up . . ..

Isen Enzo: Don’t get Storm started…

At that point I remembered a conversation that Vishnu and I had had years ago, about pointlessness not of mathematics but in mathematics.
Pema Pera: hahaha
Pema Pera: as a mathematician I’m sure you’ve a lot to say about holes
Pema Pera: pointless holes, are there things like that for example?
Pema Pera: you once told me about pointless sets or such
Storm Nordwind: In electronics there are holes too
Vishnu Duranjaya: whats the point of disscussing those….
Isen Enzo: A holistic approach?
Pema Pera: I remember your pointless conversation from years ago
Storm Nordwind: yes!

Storm Nordwind laughs
