The Guardian for this meeting was Bruce Mowbray. The comments are by Bruce Mowbray.
[2013/11/16 13:06] Bruce Mowbray: Ola! San!
[2013/11/16 13:06] Santoshima: ola, bruce
[2013/11/16 13:06] Santoshima: Are there sounds from the flute?
[2013/11/16 13:07] Bruce Mowbray: I'm sort of stuck on the recorder thing, but will gladly get rid of it for a conversation with you.
[2013/11/16 13:07] Santoshima: please continue ... lovely
[2013/11/16 13:07] Bruce Mowbray: Yes! There are indeed sounds from the flute.
[2013/11/16 13:07] Bruce Mowbray: ;)
[2013/11/16 13:08] Santoshima: there it is
[2013/11/16 13:08] Bruce Mowbray: "Danny Boy"
[2013/11/16 13:08] Santoshima: can you actually play recorder?
[2013/11/16 13:08] Santoshima: { nice trill there }
[2013/11/16 13:08] Bruce Mowbray: I used to be able to, yes.
[2013/11/16 13:08] Bruce Mowbray: I used to own a few of them, actually.
[2013/11/16 13:08] Santoshima: what would you play?
[2013/11/16 13:08] Bruce Mowbray: Whatever occurred in the practice music books.
[2013/11/16 13:09] Bruce Mowbray: How about a faster one?
[2013/11/16 13:10] Santoshima: sure
[2013/11/16 13:10] Bruce Mowbray: :)
[2013/11/16 13:10] Santoshima: Is this a gig or a reel?
[2013/11/16 13:10] Bruce Mowbray: a reel.
[2013/11/16 13:10] Santoshima: whatever it is, it's good!
[2013/11/16 13:10] Santoshima: what makes it a reel?
[2013/11/16 13:10] Bruce Mowbray: It's called "Coorley's Reel"
[2013/11/16 13:11] Bruce Mowbray: Good one, San!
[2013/11/16 13:11] Santoshima: ? I was serious :)
[2013/11/16 13:11] Bruce Mowbray: (My favorite).
[2013/11/16 13:11] Santoshima: what is it?
[2013/11/16 13:11] Bruce Mowbray: This one seems more "reel" to me.
[2013/11/16 13:12] Bruce Mowbray: It is called "Two Shores"
[2013/11/16 13:12] Santoshima: what is it that makes it be called a "reel"?
From the Wikipedia: The reel is a folk dance type as well as the accompanying dance tune type. In Scottish country dancing, the reel is one of the four traditional dances, the others being the jig, the strathspey and the waltz, and is also the name of a dance figure (see below).
In Irish dance, a reel is any dance danced to music in reel time (see below). In Irish stepdance, the reel is danced in soft shoes and is one of the first dances taught to students. There is also a treble reel, danced in hard shoes to reel music.
[2013/11/16 13:12] Santoshima: alas, when i type, the sound cuts out
[2013/11/16 13:12] Bruce Mowbray: I don't know a proper answer to your question.
[2013/11/16 13:12] Santoshima: how about an improper answer :)
[2013/11/16 13:12] Bruce Mowbray: :)
[2013/11/16 13:13] Bruce Mowbray ponders an improper answer.
[2013/11/16 13:13] Santoshima: got any other instruments in your inventory suitcase?
[2013/11/16 13:13] Bruce Mowbray: Hmmmm.
[2013/11/16 13:13] Bruce Mowbray: Maybe something. Let me check.
[2013/11/16 13:14] Santoshima: nice high C
[2013/11/16 13:14] Bruce Mowbray: ty!
[2013/11/16 13:14] Santoshima: clappity clap :)
[2013/11/16 13:14] Bruce Mowbray: ty!
BELL
[2013/11/16 13:15] Bruce Mowbray: I think that others have more instruments than I do, alas.
[2013/11/16 13:16] Bruce Mowbray: My typist FINALLY found a way for me to play the recorder without going totally nude. So, I'll think that's a significant enough achievement.
[2013/11/16 13:16] Bruce Mowbray: without also having other instruments, I mean.
[2013/11/16 13:17] Santoshima: excellent ~ must be a relief!
[2013/11/16 13:17] Bruce Mowbray: indeed!
[2013/11/16 13:17] Bruce Mowbray: and a relief for everyone else, too!
[2013/11/16 13:17] Santoshima: not sure why that happens
[2013/11/16 13:17] Bruce Mowbray: me neither.
[2013/11/16 13:17] Bruce Mowbray: but it does sometimes.
[2013/11/16 13:17] Santoshima: if one edits some mesh clothes, as well ~ they drop off for a while
[2013/11/16 13:17] Bruce Mowbray: Yes!
[2013/11/16 13:17] Santoshima: can be interesting, sort of ...
[2013/11/16 13:17] Santoshima: but not really
[2013/11/16 13:17] Santoshima: just alarming, for some reason
[2013/11/16 13:17] Bruce Mowbray: ha ha!
[2013/11/16 13:18] Bruce Mowbray: Helps one to find relief in life on other planets.
[2013/11/16 13:18] Santoshima: indeed
[2013/11/16 13:18] Bruce Mowbray: (or, have you not been following the dialogue?)
[2013/11/16 13:18] Santoshima: erm, probably not
[2013/11/16 13:18] Santoshima: you mean the emails?
[2013/11/16 13:18] Bruce Mowbray: Well, Pema gave us a link to a blog this morning...
[2013/11/16 13:19] Santoshima: righto, haven't had a chance to read it
[2013/11/16 13:19] Bruce Mowbray: about new research in life on other planets.
[2013/11/16 13:19] Santoshima: was up cleaning the cabin most of the night
[2013/11/16 13:19] Bruce Mowbray: and others have been responding - all day...
[2013/11/16 13:19] Santoshima: saw that
[2013/11/16 13:19] Santoshima: care to comment?
[2013/11/16 13:19] Bruce Mowbray: Well, I've always found this a pleasant diversion.
[2013/11/16 13:19] Santoshima: what?
[2013/11/16 13:19] Santoshima: the emails?
[2013/11/16 13:19] Bruce Mowbray: Yes, thinking about life on other planets.
[2013/11/16 13:19] Bruce Mowbray: Aph responded, for one.
[2013/11/16 13:20] Bruce Mowbray: And I checked into the blog link.
[2013/11/16 13:20] Bruce Mowbray: amazing stuff, really.
[2013/11/16 13:20] Bruce Mowbray: and it put me in the mind of my typist -- back in Berkeley days.
[2013/11/16 13:20] Santoshima: oh, yes, I will read eventually, sorry to not be able to contribute thoughts on it
[2013/11/16 13:20] Santoshima: how so, back in Berkeley?
[2013/11/16 13:20] Bruce Mowbray: from Aph -- Thanks, Piet. Very exciting!
When we say "habitable", what kinds of inhabitants are we talking about? Beings like us or smaller life forms (e.g. fungi)?
If we are looking for future earth colonies, presumably they would have to be habitable for the kind of life forms we have on earth...which may somewhat reduce the number of possible planets!
Aph
[2013/11/16 13:20] Bruce Mowbray: Mid-60's
[2013/11/16 13:21] Bruce Mowbray: I was in conversation with Frank Drake, back then.
[2013/11/16 13:21] Bruce Mowbray: Frank had worked out a formula for giving a number to the actual planets in our galaxy that might have life.
[2013/11/16 13:21] Santoshima: please say more?
[2013/11/16 13:21] Bruce Mowbray: Well, I am embarrassed - about it -- really...
[2013/11/16 13:22] Bruce Mowbray: . . . because my typist was SOOOO sophomoric about it, then.
[2013/11/16 13:22] Santoshima: your typist was maybe a sophomore back then :)
[2013/11/16 13:22] Bruce Mowbray: well, he actually called one of those talk-radio stations in San Francisco,
[2013/11/16 13:22] Santoshima: so that would be appropriate
[2013/11/16 13:22] Santoshima: I see
[2013/11/16 13:22] Bruce Mowbray: and told them what Frank had told him about the statistical probabilities, and then there was this amazing BIG FLUTTER on the radio about life on MARS!
[2013/11/16 13:22] Bruce Mowbray: ha ha!
[2013/11/16 13:22] Santoshima: sorry to interrupt
[2013/11/16 13:23] Bruce Mowbray: np.
[2013/11/16 13:23] Bruce Mowbray: You see, my typist
[2013/11/16 13:23] Santoshima: big flutter?
[2013/11/16 13:23] Santoshima: what's that?
[2013/11/16 13:23] Bruce Mowbray: also had a Unitarian friend...
[2013/11/16 13:23] Bruce Mowbray: at the UU church in Berkeley,
[2013/11/16 13:23] Bruce Mowbray: who was specifically interested in life on Mars and in Frank Drake's work.
[2013/11/16 13:23] Bruce Mowbray: and that guy actually thought that there was more likelihood that there WAS life on Mars than there was that there was NOT life on Mars.
[2013/11/16 13:24] Bruce Mowbray: So, that REALLY pulled in my typist.
[2013/11/16 13:24] Bruce Mowbray: and when he told it to the talk-radio station in SF,
[2013/11/16 13:24] Bruce Mowbray: well, it apparently pulled in a lot of others!
[2013/11/16 13:24] Bruce Mowbray: A happy memory!
[2013/11/16 13:24] Santoshima: a lot of other what? people?
[2013/11/16 13:25] Bruce Mowbray: A lot of other listeners to the radio station.
[2013/11/16 13:25] Santoshima: ah, good!
[2013/11/16 13:25] Bruce Mowbray: This was in the early days, you know.
[2013/11/16 13:25] Bruce Mowbray: before any of this on-line Web stuff.
[2013/11/16 13:25] Bruce Mowbray: but there we were:
[2013/11/16 13:25] Bruce Mowbray: listening to each other in "real" time..
[2013/11/16 13:26] Bruce Mowbray: about possible life on Mars.
[2013/11/16 13:26] Bruce Mowbray: ha ha!
[2013/11/16 13:26] Bruce Mowbray: Fond memories, of innocence.
[2013/11/16 13:27] Santoshima: oh
[2013/11/16 13:27] Santoshima: { cue the danny boy :) }
[2013/11/16 13:27] Bruce Mowbray: ;-)
[2013/11/16 13:27] Bruce Mowbray: You can continue the chat dialogue....
[2013/11/16 13:27] Bruce Mowbray: np.
[2013/11/16 13:27] Santoshima: uhm,
[2013/11/16 13:27] Santoshima: possibly not
[2013/11/16 13:27] Santoshima: I'll look for instruments
[2013/11/16 13:28] Bruce Mowbray: (Hope the Martians will enjoy "Danny Boy")
[2013/11/16 13:28] Santoshima: Does the reel automatically causes Bruce to dance?
[2013/11/16 13:28] Santoshima: maybe that the definition of a reel
[2013/11/16 13:28] Bruce Mowbray: nope, my typist has to do that - separately, with an animation.
[2013/11/16 13:28] Bruce Mowbray: :)
[2013/11/16 13:28] Bruce Mowbray: DANCE!
[2013/11/16 13:29] Santoshima: one's feet and heart just take command of the time and space
[2013/11/16 13:29] Santoshima: that penny whistle helps toward that
[2013/11/16 13:29] Bruce Mowbray: (Hard to hold the recorder to one's mouth while dancing, though.)
BELL
[2013/11/16 13:29] Santoshima: :)
[2013/11/16 13:30] Santoshima: nice
[2013/11/16 13:30] Bruce Mowbray: ty.
[2013/11/16 13:32] Santoshima: have found a warehouse quantity of virtual musical instruments
[2013/11/16 13:32] Bruce Mowbray: really!?
[2013/11/16 13:32] Bruce Mowbray: Sun would love to know about that!
[2013/11/16 13:32] Santoshima: at one time, i got into collection mode
[2013/11/16 13:32] Santoshima: many many keyboards
[2013/11/16 13:32] Santoshima: and a few programable instruments
[2013/11/16 13:32] Santoshima: a cello
[2013/11/16 13:32] Second Life: szavanna is offline.
[2013/11/16 13:32] Santoshima: a flute
[2013/11/16 13:33] Bruce Mowbray: wow!
[2013/11/16 13:33] Santoshima: let me see if any transferable
[2013/11/16 13:33] Bruce Mowbray: yes!
[2013/11/16 13:33] Bruce Mowbray: would love to see you play them.
[2013/11/16 13:33] Santoshima: Here's a flute from Storm that I can share
[2013/11/16 13:33] Santoshima: coming your way
[2013/11/16 13:33] Santoshima: hang on
[2013/11/16 13:33] Bruce Mowbray: wow. TY!
[2013/11/16 13:35] Bruce Mowbray: How do I get the flute to play?
[2013/11/16 13:35] Bruce Mowbray: and also, THANKS!
[2013/11/16 13:37] Bruce Mowbray: The recorder animation plays with the flute!
[2013/11/16 13:37] Bruce Mowbray: a bagpipe!????
[2013/11/16 13:38] Santoshima: ancient type
[2013/11/16 13:38] Bruce Mowbray: Hmmmm.
[2013/11/16 13:39] Bruce Mowbray: Am trying to get some music up...
[2013/11/16 13:40] Bruce Mowbray: wb!
[2013/11/16 13:40] Santoshima: sorry, teleported due to incorrect setup of screen layout
[2013/11/16 13:40] Bruce Mowbray: np.
[2013/11/16 13:40] Santoshima: often press the button accidentally
[2013/11/16 13:40] Bruce Mowbray: I also tp'ed to my morning meditation zendo.
[2013/11/16 13:40] Bruce Mowbray: ha ha!
[2013/11/16 13:41] Santoshima: happens
[2013/11/16 13:41] Santoshima: i better get to work ... nice to see you Bruce, I'm heading off into bookkeeping land
[2013/11/16 13:41] Bruce Mowbray: kk.
[2013/11/16 13:41] Bruce Mowbray: Always great to see you, San!
[2013/11/16 13:41] Qt Core: Hi San, Bruce
[2013/11/16 13:42] Bruce Mowbray: bye for now!
[2013/11/16 13:42] Santoshima: bye so long ~
[2013/11/16 13:42] Bruce Mowbray: Hello, Qt!
[2013/11/16 13:42] Santoshima: hi Qt, see you sometime soon ~ just heading off
[2013/11/16 13:42] Bruce Mowbray ponders ships passing in the night.
[2013/11/16 13:43] Qt Core: ahh
[2013/11/16 13:44] Qt Core: How is life, Bruce ?
BELL
[2013/11/16 13:48] Qt Core: you only need some ancient looking outfit to exactly match this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cernunnos
[2013/11/16 13:48] Qt Core: :-)
[2013/11/16 13:48] Bruce Mowbray: My typist should be getting all this exercise.
[2013/11/16 13:49] Bruce Mowbray: The antlered man!
[2013/11/16 13:49] Bruce Mowbray: I know him well.
[2013/11/16 13:49] Bruce Mowbray: Or, the horned god, as it were.
[2013/11/16 13:49] Bruce Mowbray: i understand that the antlers enable the antlered god to communicate with other gods.
[2013/11/16 13:50] Bruce Mowbray: (as does the flute.)
[2013/11/16 13:51] Bruce Mowbray: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horned_God
[2013/11/16 13:52] Bruce Mowbray: Jungian analysis -
Sherry Salman considers the image of the Horned God in Jungian terms, as an archetypal protector and mediator of the outside world to the objective psyche. In her theory the male psyche's 'Horned God' frequently compensates for inadequate fathering.
[2013/11/16 13:52] Qt Core: i'm reminded more about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Drawings_in_Valcamonica (i've been there a couple times)
[2013/11/16 13:52] Bruce Mowbray: Hmmmm.
[2013/11/16 13:52] Bruce Mowbray: Fascinating! You've BEEN there!
[2013/11/16 13:53] Bruce Mowbray: You know, Michelangelo also depicted Moses as having horns.
[2013/11/16 13:53] Bruce Mowbray: seems to have been a very ancient depiction....
[2013/11/16 13:54] Bruce Mowbray wonders if anyone will make rock drawings depicting him.
[2013/11/16 13:54] Qt Core: if i remember it right it is after some weird translation of the Bible (or it was the right one and we usually skip it as horns became the devil symbol ?
[2013/11/16 13:54] Bruce Mowbray: Hmmm.
[2013/11/16 13:54] Bruce Mowbray: Don't know.
[2013/11/16 13:55] Bruce Mowbray: I thought that Moses' horns depicted some special communication between him and Jehovah.
[2013/11/16 13:55] Bruce Mowbray: (but really don't know anything about it.)
[2013/11/16 13:57] Bruce Mowbray: http://taylormarshall.com/2013/08/the-horns-of-moses-defending-michelangelos-horned-moses.html
[2013/11/16 13:59] Bruce Mowbray: Frankly, I think my antlers are far cooler than Moses' horns.
[2013/11/16 13:59] Qt Core: and your beard ? ;-)
[2013/11/16 13:59] Bruce Mowbray: no beard.
[2013/11/16 13:59] Bruce Mowbray: but my antlers can change colors.
BELL
[2013/11/16 14:00] Bruce Mowbray: time for me to go, alas.
[2013/11/16 14:00] Bruce Mowbray: May you be safe and happy, Qt!
[2013/11/16 14:00] Qt Core: ok, have fun!
[2013/11/16 14:01] Bruce Mowbray: (a parting melody....)
[plays "Danny Boy" on flute.]
