Calvino Rabeni: Hello Santoshima :)
Calvino Rabeni: On a cool fall night
Lucinda Lavender: hello Cal and San...
Santoshima Resident: hello Calvino and Lucinda
Lucinda Lavender: the cool fall night...
Calvino Rabeni: It's much more dramatic when the air is full of leaves
Calvino Rabeni wonders what is baking at the House of Lucinda
Santoshima Resident: :)
Lucinda Lavender: flying every which way
Lucinda Lavender: turkey and dumplings
Calvino Rabeni: :)
Calvino Rabeni: six white horses too ?
Lucinda Lavender: we make various things in the crock pot
Lucinda Lavender: yep...
Lucinda Lavender: well not horses in the crock pot
Lucinda Lavender: It is a full moon today have you seen it anyone? i have not.
Santoshima Resident: not yet
Calvino Rabeni: hmmm .. peeks
Santoshima Resident: inside, so far
Santoshima Resident: will check
Santoshima Resident: seen
Lucinda Lavender: I went out and the air was fresh...no moon as of yet for me
Calvino Rabeni: it is muted behind a light cloud layer
Calvino Rabeni: like rough tissue paper
Calvino Rabeni: i thought it might have something soft to say
Lucinda Lavender: krinkle krinkle
Lucinda Lavender: HIya paradise!
Paradise Tennant: hiya luci san cal :))
Lucinda Lavender: swish swish
--BELL--
Santoshima Resident: hello paradise :)
Calvino Rabeni: Hello Paradise :)
Calvino Rabeni: Long time no see, how have things been in the northern empire?
Paradise Tennant: ok ... nice mild rainy night here :))
Paradise Tennant: I have had a computer issue which took me a while to resolve :)
Calvino Rabeni: arr(g)
Paradise Tennant: cannot believe how fast the year has gone .. xmas is almost upon us ..
Calvino Rabeni: sneaking up on us on cat feet
Paradise Tennant: had an interesting day interviewed a friend of mine for a journal article .. she is 91 and was the first femiale real estate appraiser in canada then went to see dallas buyers club..
Calvino Rabeni: that sounds generative! how did the interview go, and what kind of journal is it?
Paradise Tennant: i am sorry I have likely taken you off topic .. an economist journal :)
Lucinda Lavender: we were not in anything deep exactly...more like weather:)
Lucinda Lavender: and sky, and moon
Calvino Rabeni: :) yup, they are all still there!
Calvino Rabeni: along with seasons and everything
Lucinda Lavender: !!
Lucinda Lavender: and darkness
Calvino Rabeni: and even putting in an artistic appearance
Calvino Rabeni: :)
Paradise Tennant: she sees very clearly with the eyes of someone who has been through a lot ... and has the treasure of a great memory and lovely sense of enjoyment in the moment perhaps 91 give you that:_
Lucinda Lavender: wow...i bet
Lucinda Lavender: real estate seems like a love of land perhaps
Paradise Tennant: hmm and variety
Lucinda Lavender: a love of exchange
Paradise Tennant: yes lots of moving part to it :)) she really was a pioneer
Lucinda Lavender: perhaps the ability to see possibility
Paradise Tennant: and connections causality .. :) the detail
Calvino Rabeni: I like talking to people who have longer term perspectives ... if they can be enticed to talk about it
Calvino Rabeni: on their area of knowing in the world
Paradise Tennant: smiles yes
Paradise Tennant: knowing seems to change with the decades :))
Paradise Tennant: even in things you would think would not change .. it seems there is only change :)
Calvino Rabeni: Like my friend who is 93, ... wish I could travel back in his memory
--BELL--
Paradise Tennant: so important to have friends in every age category they all offer a unique perspective :))
Lucinda Lavender: sorry friends...must go look for some receipts:)
Calvino Rabeni: ask and you shall receipt :)
Lucinda Lavender: hope to see you again soon...
Paradise Tennant: k luci enjoy your evening :)
Calvino Rabeni: hope so :)
Lucinda Lavender: thanks...my filing has gotten a bit mixed up i guess...
Lucinda Lavender: see you soon
Calvino Rabeni: be well !
Santoshima Resident: good night luci
Santoshima Resident: and good night cal and paradise
Calvino Rabeni: sleep well
Paradise Tennant: nite nite san .. sweet dreams :))
Paradise Tennant: how have you been cal ? any more travelling ?
Calvino Rabeni: Grounded for the season
Calvino Rabeni: but trying to do some media traveling
Paradise Tennant: what is media traveling :)
Calvino Rabeni: you might be a good one to ask about movie recommendations,
Calvino Rabeni: for example, foreign films (relative to USA)
Paradise Tennant: my brother was in town for two weeks he is a big movie buff .. would recommend .. Inequality for all..
Calvino Rabeni: where you get into something very realistic, rather than dramatic
Calvino Rabeni: I get a bit weary of drama tropes
Calvino Rabeni: so I turned to French cinema lately, just getting started
Paradise Tennant: Inequality for all is a documentary a good one :)
Paradise Tennant: which french films?
Calvino Rabeni: The Women on the 6th Floor is on the list
Calvino Rabeni: just getting started though
Calvino Rabeni: usually I read the reviews and see if anything really unrealistic and awful happens, then don't watch it
Paradise Tennant: smiles love foreign films as long as they do not start with scenes of starving peasants ..not so keen on films which make me be sad to be human :)
Calvino Rabeni: preferring character studies
Paradise Tennant: watermark is suppose to be good also a documentary have not seen it yet though
Calvino Rabeni: I saw a couple of Chinese movies .. lots of war .. pretty dramatic, but it's hard to buy into what seems like the mass hypnosis and values of it ... I guess you had to be there to have it make sense
Calvino Rabeni: Watermark .. an economics documentary?
Calvino Rabeni: I have "Botany of Desire" on the list too, its an, I guess, human ecology documentary
Paradise Tennant: yes inequality for all is on economics .. watermark is ecology
Paradise Tennant: with great camera work I hear
Calvino Rabeni: nods
--BELL--
Paradise Tennant: http://video.pbs.org/video/1283872815/
Paradise Tennant: here is a link :)
Calvino Rabeni: handy - thanks!
Paradise Tennant: I have gotten hooked on Doc Martin while my brother stayed :)) he signed me up for netflix :)) quite addictive :)
Calvino Rabeni: I don't have any cable tv or on demand subscriptions ... so I get stuff at the local library on disk
Calvino Rabeni: Found first 2 seasons of "Mad Men" interesting
Paradise Tennant: hmm netflix is 7.99 per month and it has great british tv lots of options .. no commercials and you pause it while you go walk the dog am very impressed :)
Calvino Rabeni: I wish, one could create a documentary "to order" through some service, and have it appear within a few months
Calvino Rabeni: this might be a capability of future humans
Paradise Tennant: smiles might lack the element of surprise :)
Calvino Rabeni: maybe not .. if one asks for a documentary on a general topic, it could be quite a surprising discovery
Paradise Tennant: yes :))
Calvino Rabeni: this imaginative art form would need a way to deal with non-events too
Calvino Rabeni: like when something didn't happen, that might or "should" have
Paradise Tennant: hmm
Calvino Rabeni: for instance, take the word "tranching", do you know it?
Paradise Tennant: what kinds of things " should " happen
Paradise Tennant: nope
Calvino Rabeni: the "great recession" we recently, more or less passed through, was technically enabled by financial instruments, derivatives that would slice risk up and redistribute it
Calvino Rabeni: that word comes from structured finance
Calvino Rabeni: they just invented derivative securities out of nothing and sold them
Paradise Tennant: was thinking of another application I actually tranch :)
Calvino Rabeni: and I guess it seems like voodoo to the public ?
Paradise Tennant: no just layers
Calvino Rabeni: oh, something like CDO's
Paradise Tennant: not voodoo
Calvino Rabeni: yes
Calvino Rabeni: the "too complex" category for most to think about
Paradise Tennant: not really that complex if used correctly
Paradise Tennant: and directly related to a concrete tangible asset
Calvino Rabeni: the question is, who was thinking about the possible systemic effects, and the debt ration balon
Calvino Rabeni: baloon
Calvino Rabeni: was there some critical thinking involved .. like, could this get out of hand
Paradise Tennant: canada has a different landscape much more regulation .. much stronger banking system ..
Calvino Rabeni: for a lot of people it could be considered the modern equivalent of "rocket science" as in, "it's not rocket science"
Paradise Tennant: so here .. nothing really complicated happened
Calvino Rabeni: nods to that about CA
Calvino Rabeni: but US dragged a lot of other markets with it
Calvino Rabeni: the imaginary documentary would have to have an Iceland segment
Paradise Tennant: yes
Paradise Tennant: grim consequences
Calvino Rabeni: as you probably know, there used to be a regulatory separation between savings institutions and "investment" banks, with the former not allowed to invest in experimental and/or risky securities
Calvino Rabeni: but that separation was removed during Clinton's presidency
Calvino Rabeni: setting the stage for the entire system to go out on a limb
Calvino Rabeni: sort of like the Titanic ... making the safety features not work :)
Calvino Rabeni: smooth sailing
Calvino Rabeni: until ..
--BELL--
Calvino Rabeni: (anyway, perhaps I ought not "talk shop", eh?)
Paradise Tennant: you would like inequality for all :))
Paradise Tennant: I did
Calvino Rabeni: ok
Paradise Tennant: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2215151/
Calvino Rabeni: ah.. Robert Reich, I remember him from the Clinton years
Calvino Rabeni: It was on my mind because I was out doing a newish (for me) activity earlier today
Calvino Rabeni: door to door politicking
Calvino Rabeni: with a couple of old hands at it
Calvino Rabeni: 85 year olds
Paradise Tennant: ahh important to get involved lol
Paradise Tennant: nods :)))
Calvino Rabeni: Run into some odd attitudes
Paradise Tennant: i bet
Calvino Rabeni: there was a guy whose ballot was defective, nothing had been counted on it
Calvino Rabeni: and the purpose of the action was to make sure he voted on a certain measure
Calvino Rabeni: to support it
Calvino Rabeni: but, he was against that measure
Calvino Rabeni: so he refused to put his signature on the ballot, thus losing ALL his decisions, including the No vote on the measure he opposed
