[13:50] Yakuzza Lethecus: i was actually wondering if ppl in italy exept in the alps actually use wintertires
[13:50] Bruce Mowbray: I actually felt my typist's tires this morning,,,, to see if they were all right for winter, and I decided he can go another year with the ones he has now.
[13:50] Qt Core: (i have snow chains in my car to not get a ticket... but i never knew how to install them)
[13:50] Yakuzza Lethecus: you don´t even have to have chains in germany, i know that there are regions in the alps in austria that you have to have them
[13:51] Yakuzza Lethecus: here in sweden ppl even drive with spikes, which in germany is forbidden
[13:51] Bruce Mowbray: My typist has a friend in Alaska -- and up there you really do HAVE to have chains, or some special kind of tires... or else you get a ticket.
[13:52] Bruce Mowbray: and you also have to have them OFF of your car by a certain date in the spring...
[13:52] Qt Core: around here winter tires or chains are mandatory after mid october i think (i keep the chains in the car all year so no problem)
[13:52] Bruce Mowbray: and this is always a bit of panic for my friend.
[13:52] Qt Core: why you have to have them off ?
[13:52] Bruce Mowbray: {sounds like Qt might live in the Dolomites, or some such place.]

[13:53] Bruce Mowbray: You have to have them off (in Alaska) because they tear up the roads.
[13:53] Qt Core: just a few km north of milan, but the first mountains start just about 50 km from here

[13:54] Qt Core: today it was cloudy but clear, so a very nice view of the freshly snow capped mountains, yes
[13:55] Bruce Mowbray: All my typist has for scenery are the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains - about 25 miles south of his farm. Clearly visible, but hardly anything to get excited about.
[13:55] Bruce Mowbray: but to the north, east, and west, ALL IS FLAT!

[14:03] Qt Core: the main issue with winter tires is where to store the 4 other tires ;-)

[14:03] Qt Core: no, i haven't been anywhere else than my entry point sim and here in a few weeks
[14:05] Qt Core: i usually am late for those too (heard from someone that got there in time it double the price, around 50 euros for the installing and another 50 for the keeping
[14:05] Yakuzza Lethecus: to sweden i just drove with new wintertires in august but i haven´t been moving my car much
[14:06] Qt Core: at 35 or more in the air here winter tire would disintegrate in days if used in summer
[14:06] Yakuzza Lethecus: so using wintertires all year isn´t an issue on my current amount of driving, but the wintermix is melting away during sommer on intensive use

[14:09] Yakuzza Lethecus: not mandatory, till 2 years back we haven´t had a general wintertire rule in germany, but if you had an accident due to snow and no wintertires you´ve been screwed
[14:11] Qt Core: technically they are mandatory, but you can't be on some roads without them (almost all the ones outside the city centers)

[14:12] Yakuzza Lethecus: all it takes is one car without or truck
[14:13] Yakuzza Lethecus: i was always happy not to live in an urban area with dense traffic
[14:13] Qt Core: remembering when it toke me 11 hours to do my usual daily commute from work to home (19 km)
[14:14] Qt Core: it was 9, my colleagues toke 11
[14:16] Yakuzza Lethecus: bike or scooter but sure not in winter
[14:17] Yakuzza Lethecus: does milan have an underground and buslines to speed up public transportation ?
[14:18] Qt Core: yes, bus, tram, and subway and local trains too
[14:18] Yakuzza Lethecus: well with buslines i didn´t mean bus connections but buspriority lanes
[14:18] Yakuzza Lethecus: tram, that has almost died out in germany :)
