Bruce Mowbray: I fear that future generations may not be able to maintain their attention spans any longer than the length of time it takes to do a text message.

Bruce Mowbray: Part of the problem with short attention spans is that one cannot appreciate the context, let alone focus on the subject matter.

Qt Core: even long books, with an ebook reader (hardware or software) can be read in pieces, not giving oneself time to enter the scene
ElanVitalo: recently I watched a movie about the life of Caravaggio, and several of the scenes were actually patterned after his paintings.
ElanVitalo: and so I paused the movie in order to appreciate the cinematography.

Qt Core: some of them, like the real ones could be let shrink thanks to technology, but then to the limit of being healthy, then some of the mental ones like pure memory can, but the risk of shrinking the pure thinking one is great

Bruce Mowbray: I was thinking more of perception generally,
Bruce Mowbray: and of how we bring ourselves to the experience -  bringing subjectivity to the relationship with whatever it is that we are engaged in perceiving.
Qt Core: probably nothing but omniscience/illumination would pollute perception

ElanVitalo: Does the phrase "I suspect we see this differently" make any sense to you, QT?
Qt Core: but knowing about that pollution may dampen it

Bruce Mowbray: Good point, QT. Sometimes I wonder whether the purpose of mindfulness meditation is to give us more awareness of a context or for letting that context fall away.... and all other contexts fall away.

Qt Core: i think it is easier (at least for me) to just know that i pollute my perception and to try to recognize/remove that pollution in each instance
Bruce Mowbray: Objectivity is a tough nut.
Wol Euler: constant self-checking, as it were
Bruce Mowbray: Especially in the quantum realm, where our perceptions determine what we see.... Schrodinger's cat could be dead or alive.
Qt Core: but that, would too much of it erase your own personality ?
Bruce Mowbray: That's what I love about phenomenology, QT.
Bruce Mowbray: The subjective is honored as valid and essential.
Bruce Mowbray: to erase your own personality would be, in effect, to erase the reality of that encounter.
Qt Core: then it would not matter who encountered who.what
Bruce Mowbray: what gets bracketed out are the prior assumptions and judgments...
Bruce Mowbray: and all that's left are the actual experiences of the observer in the relationship....
Bruce Mowbray: it's a shifting around of what matters, I guess.
Bruce Mowbray: no longer dependent upon orthodox or culturally biased categories for meaning.....
Qt Core: those assumptions are still there, some will survive the meeting some not
