Korel Laloix: Heya
--BELL--
stevenaia Michinaga: Hey Korel, last we spoke you were on your honeymoon
Korel Laloix smiles.. yes, sadly it had to end.
stevenaia Michinaga: still married?...giggles
Korel Laloix: Sorting out the last of the thank you cards and returning some things.
Korel Laloix: Actually, just civil unioned... the same thing with better tax implications.
stevenaia Michinaga: did you get multiples of th same things as gifts?
Korel Laloix: We asked for 24 sets of our china pattern and ended up with 55... lol
stevenaia Michinaga: lol,
Korel Laloix: And some oft things we already had. With 200 familes attending the reception, we ened up with a lot of stuff.
stevenaia Michinaga: we have a wedding to go to with 250 ppl coming next weekend
Korel Laloix: Great fun, but quite a mess as well. Glad it is all done with really.
stevenaia Michinaga: it;s a theme wedding, I think I'm to old got theme weddings "the 20's"
stevenaia Michinaga: *for
Korel Laloix: Sounds fun.. ours was a big Russian festival more than anything.
Korel Laloix: But that is what Sama wanted.
Korel Laloix: We will do a Native ceremony even up here in a year or so.
stevenaia Michinaga: She Russian Orthodox?
stevenaia Michinaga: seems like a unique theme
Korel Laloix: Sama was born in Russia, her parents were Soviet then Russian embassy workers.
Korel Laloix: But down in Saint Pete Florida there is a pretty big Russian community there.
stevenaia Michinaga: perfect
Korel Laloix: It was lovely. A few bumps, but overall great fun. Great memories.
stevenaia Michinaga: :)
Korel Laloix: What you been up to?
stevenaia Michinaga: well welcome back
stevenaia Michinaga: I've just been crusing along, son and his GF coming in for his cousin's next weekend, he's in Calif., should be a fun time
Korel Laloix: Getting back to work sort of sucked... but I was getting a bit restless on the ship.
Korel Laloix: That sounds fun.
Korel Laloix: Just for the weekend?
stevenaia Michinaga: he will be here for a week
stevenaia Michinaga: was in last month for 6 days for some holidays
stevenaia Michinaga: speaking of which... I overheard a conversation at the local coffee shop....
Korel Laloix: Good you are able to get together.
Korel Laloix: OH?
stevenaia Michinaga: yes
stevenaia Michinaga: this guy was saying how his church help a "Passover Sedar" (dinner which was the last supper)
stevenaia Michinaga: and was confused how "late" it was this year since usually it's before Easter, as if somehow Passover dates were confused
--BELL--
stevenaia Michinaga: seems few Chirstians know that Passover is Lunar calendar based
stevenaia Michinaga: and Easter should always (and generally does) follow Passover
Korel Laloix: There are various calendars and traditions. Really, the dates don't mean much to me. It is the thought.
Korel Laloix: That is why the orthodox had Easter so late this year.
stevenaia Michinaga: actually no it's not "Late", it just follows Passover, as it should
Korel Laloix: Oh agreed, but compared to the other community I mean.
stevenaia Michinaga: there is no early or late, it's all right on time, jsut someone elses
Korel Laloix: lol. true
Korel Laloix: People get in ruts they like to stay in.
stevenaia Michinaga: not to sound clueless (but I am) what is the first Nation's calendar
Korel Laloix: I think people get too attached to details on a lot of thing and forget the big concepts... one of the bigger human shortcommings probably.
Korel Laloix: There are different ways, but since there was little formal records, more traditions.
Korel Laloix: Both solar and luner were used.
Korel Laloix: Depended on the tribes and locations. But I am not an expert.
stevenaia Michinaga: nods, are there annual holidays that have been converted to regular calendar dates
Korel Laloix: Oh yes, seasonal based. Around harvest. But also we have tribal incorporation celebrations and the like. Our powwows tend to be associated with those.
Korel Laloix: Out big one is in September. But there are events year round with the various tribe.s
stevenaia Michinaga: powwows considered a social gathering of sorts?
stevenaia Michinaga: or political/religious
Korel Laloix: All of the above. Social thing, cultural, dance, language, politics, tribal business meetings, awards, etc.
stevenaia Michinaga: something for everyone
Korel Laloix: As things are moving on line the powwows are getting less business, and more cultural though I think.
Korel Laloix: Great fun if you have never been.
Korel Laloix: Just pick which one you go to carefully, some can be fairly hostile to outsiders on certain days.
--BELL--
stevenaia Michinaga: not sure I've heard of any on the east coast,
Korel Laloix: Oh there are plenty.. even in NYC... lol
stevenaia Michinaga: but will keep an eye out as there are some locally active tribes in the are
