2017.11.11 01:00 - Conflicted

The Guardian for this meeting was Wol Euler.

    Wol Euler: osiyo, Korel
    Korel Laloix: Heya
Wol Euler: good morning, though I guess it#s still pitch-black there?
Korel Laloix: Yes... very.. just can''t sleep at the moment, so thought I would stop by.
    Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: always glad to see you, though I wish sleeplessness on nobody
    Wol Euler smiles.

Korel Laloix: What you been up to Wol?
Wol Euler: mostly work, sad to say, we have one project supposed to open in ten days, and/but the bulldozers are still driving around the gardens ...
Wol Euler: and another two about to start on site
    Wol Euler: it's hectic
Wol Euler: thinking about christmas already, dreaming of time off
    Korel Laloix: I can imagine.
    Wol Euler: and yourself?
Korel Laloix: Sama is finally back from Puerto Rico and finally getting settled in this new house.
    Wol Euler: good :)
Wol Euler: was she doing relief work?
Korel Laloix: So was a bit of a lull for a while.. now back to our normal hectic.
    Wol Euler: or relief-related?
Korel Laloix: Yes, she was down there with her dad for about a month.
    Wol Euler smiles.
Wol Euler: that was so badly handled, and is still so. How many TRILLION dollars in the military budget but they were unable to send soldiers to help out?
Korel Laloix: Was a big impact on her really. Lot's of very disheartening stories.
    Wol Euler: yeah

Korel Laloix: Actually, Sama tells a very different story.
    Wol Euler: do tell :)
Korel Laloix: Warehouse full of aid, but local politicians preventing it from being distrubuted.
    Wol Euler: hmmmm
Korel Laloix: Whole neighborhoods without power, but again, the local fat cats demanding their houses get hooked up before clinics.
Korel Laloix: They are throwing away tons of food that is going bad as it just sits there, while politicians whine about not having any... grrr
    Wol Euler nods.
Korel Laloix: Just infuriating. And people making politics out of suffering..
Wol Euler: how did she view that? was it malice or greed, or just incompetence?
    Wol Euler nods.
Korel Laloix: She is still sort of very disturbed by it all. But more malice it seems.
    Wol Euler: damn :(

    --BELL--

Korel Laloix: You had local politicians trying to make political points vs helping.
Wol Euler: I bet she's disturbed :( that must have been awful
    Korel Laloix: Just sick.
Korel Laloix: Why does tragedy bring out the best in some and the worst in others?
    Wol Euler: 31
    Wol Euler: ha. 42
Wol Euler: touch typing wins again
Korel Laloix: That being said, it she said she did a lot of good down there. Both of them speak spanish and have construction backgrounds.
Wol Euler: to answer seriously, I think that (like alcohol and the internet) tragedy and sudden dire need amplify what is already in you. If you are a good helping person, it'll make you more so. If you are a greedy pushy bastard, it will make that come out even more strongly
Wol Euler: that's good, at least
Wol Euler: knowing that will probably help her deal with the rest
Korel Laloix: With all the stories they have, I told them to write a book.. don't think they will do it though.
    Wol Euler smiles.
Wol Euler: most people who should, don't.
    Korel Laloix: I noticed... lol
Wol Euler: but they might well write an article or two ...

Wol Euler: my father wrote and edited (published) books, so I have no illusions about how much hard work that is, or the huge amount of time it consumes; but still ... :)
Korel Laloix: I think it will be good for her studies as well.. some practical things to say.
    Wol Euler nods.
    Wol Euler: surely
Wol Euler: back in a sec, my coffee is (a) nearly empty and (b) cold
Korel Laloix: I have a few published papers, and that is just painful for a few pages. The idea of writing a whole book sounds very painful.
    Korel Laloix: ok
Wol Euler: indeed :) the thought of an entire book puts people off, but anyone can write a paper ... and many should
Wol Euler: actually doesn't Sama have to write for her course ... ?
Wol Euler: two birds with one etc
Korel Laloix: I have actually had a couple of my paper referenced in other papers... lol.. so success I guess.
    Wol Euler: yay :)
Wol Euler: that counts as peer review
    Wol Euler grins.
    Korel Laloix: lol..
Korel Laloix: It is not a fun process, and sure its real value.
    Wol Euler: absolutely
Korel Laloix: Just be nice to be able to see and walk into a finalized project in your proffession.
Korel Laloix: I don't get that satisfaction.
Wol Euler: oh it is, it's wonderful
Wol Euler: and when people tell you how much they like it?
    Wol Euler: bliss :D
Wol Euler: but again, the long hard dirty slog to get there ...
Wol Euler: it's a four year process, much of which is very aggravating and/or filthy
Wol Euler: just like writing a book :D

    --BELL--

Korel Laloix: A mentally dirty process for what I do. knowing I have to write something useful, but does not hit and triggers and caters to the publication, not progess.
    Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: the question then is how to keep your soul as clean as your hands ...
Korel Laloix: peer review is so broken these days in some fields.
Korel Laloix: Now that is an interesting topic.
Korel Laloix: My new job is a lot like that... figuring out how to do some good without getting sucked into the politics.
    Wol Euler nods.
    Wol Euler: it
Wol Euler: it's everywhere, in my job too
Wol Euler: balancing what is needed against what is politically necessary and acceptable
Korel Laloix: I know... just not sure that I want to be in that position. Good to learn, but not good on the soul I don't think.
    Wol Euler: agreed
Wol Euler: we don't have to deal directly with the politics, thank god, except insofar as our clients tend to be government bodies (city councils usually)
Wol Euler: but it's always there
Wol Euler: and it can lead to some very dubious decisions
Wol Euler: people get crazy about money :)
Korel Laloix: I deal with the politics every day it seems. I know the feeling.
Korel Laloix: And it can be a lot of money.
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
Wol Euler: we deal with comparatively small sums

Korel Laloix: THe part I hate is trying to explain to elected people about things that are science...
    Wol Euler: oh yeah
Korel Laloix: Very few actually want to hear about different views or data quality.
Wol Euler: and I fear that will only get worse as long as trump and the republicans are in office. Their whole schtick is that science is bad.
    Wol Euler nods.
Korel Laloix: Not just them... some of the people I have to deal with make me ashamed to be a Democrat.
    Wol Euler nods again.
Wol Euler: I meant the atmosphere more than the people
Wol Euler: the whole populist science-bashing thing is going to continue
Korel Laloix: It is on both sides for sure.
    Wol Euler: mmhmm

Korel Laloix: I think people are just getting sick of the establishment all around.
Korel Laloix: And that unfortunatly includes more than just the politics.
    Wol Euler nods.
Korel Laloix: People are angry at the media, academia, industry, everything
Wol Euler: and that anger is being fed, like pouring gasoline on a fire
    Wol Euler: deliberately fed
Korel Laloix: Not a good trend at all.
    Wol Euler: indeed
Wol Euler: America is in for some very hard times, I fear ...
Wol Euler: and with you, the whole world
Korel Laloix: We have been in a very bad downward spiral it seems for a generation now.
    Wol Euler nods.
Korel Laloix: Clinton was a terrible president from what I read, Bush was worse.
Korel Laloix: Obama was worst than those two.. and now TUmp?... wtf?
Korel Laloix: We seem to be looking for how low we can go.
Wol Euler: at least none of those were actual criminals.
Wol Euler: Trump's latest appointee owes 70 million back taxes, and walks around a free man. If you or I owed seven thousand and refused to pay, we would be locked up instantly
Wol Euler: you cannot expect poor people to obey a law that they see rich people not obeying
Wol Euler: that's just common sense

    --BELL--

Korel Laloix: Clinton certainly was... committed perjury, and a bunch of other things. My only big issue with Hillary is putting up with him.
    Wol Euler: ha
Wol Euler: a paragon of generosity and tolerance
    Wol Euler: at the least
Korel Laloix: Which one was that? Not heard that one.. lol
Wol Euler: I've forgotten the name already, there was a report in the media middle of the week. I could check.
    Korel Laloix: No worries.
    Wol Euler: yeah :)

Wol Euler: how's the running? are you still active?
Korel Laloix: Down to about 6 miles a day. And slowing down. But I still do some long runs on the weekends. Completely given up on marathons.
    Wol Euler laughs.
Korel Laloix: My doctor and Sama are happy about it though.
Wol Euler: "only six miles a day" my god
    Wol Euler: well good :)
Wol Euler: I'm glad to hear that
Wol Euler: six miles a day ... do I walk six miles a week? maybe, but certainly no more
Korel Laloix: I just wish running less would translate into some weight.. grrr
    Wol Euler: awwwww :)
Korel Laloix: Sama definitely came back from PR in very good shape...
    Wol Euler smiles.
Korel Laloix: So she lined up some more modeling work before she starts back to school.
    Wol Euler: wow
Wol Euler: that's a nice sideline to have
Korel Laloix: She enjoys it mostly to get free clothes and travel... at least at this point in her life.
    Wol Euler nods.
Korel Laloix: She wanted to make a career of it, but refused to sleep around to get work.
Wol Euler: it's said to be an awful job if you try to depend on it for an income
    Wol Euler: right
Korel Laloix: And she says it is a lot more fun as a 30 something.
Wol Euler: "I was on the cover of 'Vogue' but I couldn't afford to buy a copy" is a line that I have remembered, from a model interview
Korel Laloix: Not the pressure to be a stick insect.
    Wol Euler: yeah
    Wol Euler: I hear that.
Wol Euler: well, good for her! :) and good for you that she's back
    Wol Euler smiles.
Korel Laloix: Sama has been in a few of those famous mags, but just in clothes and cosmetics ads. nothing toward the front cover.
Korel Laloix: And good for Annie...
    Wol Euler: mmhmm of course
Korel Laloix: Getting the family back together.
    Wol Euler nods.

Korel Laloix: We are getting spoiled to having the mother in law here... will be difficult trying to make things work with just us. But I am sure we will manage when they leave.
    Wol Euler smiles.
Korel Laloix: And then the big question for me... is it my turn? scary thought.
    Wol Euler: ha!
    Wol Euler: surely it's optional?
    Wol Euler grins.
Korel Laloix: Well. darn the bio clock... grrr
    Wol Euler nods.
Korel Laloix: So conflicted on the subject.
Wol Euler: yeah ... so many
Korel Laloix: My heart wants to, but my head has all these reasons against.
Korel Laloix: Will figure it out, something to pray and think about for sure.
    Wol Euler: you're ... what, 24-ish now?
Korel Laloix: oh.. lol.. oh I wish.
    Wol Euler: heheheheh
    Korel Laloix: Over 30 now.
Wol Euler: sorry :) I have this really odd mental habit, that people stay the age they were when I meet them :D
Korel Laloix: Been in SL for more than a third of my life.
Korel Laloix: That would be about right though.
    Korel Laloix: lol
    Wol Euler: mmhmm
    Wol Euler smiles.
Korel Laloix: Probably started PaB when I was about 24.
Wol Euler: that would be it :)

    --BELL--

Korel Laloix: I get that a lot RL so I am used to it. Just like most people can't tell people from other races apart well, we tend to be bad at figuring out age in other races too.
    Wol Euler nods.
Korel Laloix: And I am short and thin.. so people rarely get my age even close.. lol.. which can be very funny at times.
    Wol Euler smiles.
Wol Euler: do you have to show ID to prove your age? :)
Korel Laloix: Sama has been asked on more than one occasion if I was adopted. lmbo.. it really annoys Sama though.
    Wol Euler: oh man
    Wol Euler laughs.
Korel Laloix: Not as bad as it use dto be, but me ordering a drink can be funny.
Wol Euler: that wold be so annoying, yeah
Korel Laloix: When I was in my early 20s, there were places that would not serve me even with w picture IDs.
    Wol Euler: heheheh
Korel Laloix: one sec.. the cat wants attentiong.
Korel Laloix: And I can't see the screen.
    Korel Laloix: lol
    Wol Euler chuckles.
Korel Laloix: ok.. I gues sthat i smy hint.
    Wol Euler nods.
Wol Euler: the day has started :)
Korel Laloix: going to try to sleep again.
Korel Laloix: ciao.. thanks for teh chat
Wol Euler: good luck! take care <3
