Mickorod Renard: I wonder what it wud be like to leave it playing on headphones while u sleep?
Eliza Madrigal: :) would have to go back a lot... which I learned when I'd fade out and have to come back
    Bleu Oleander: yes, happens
Mickorod Renard: do you mean you loose concentration?
Eliza Madrigal: easy when listening to audio, to begin multitasking, or go into light naps
Eliza Madrigal: and this really needs imaginative attention, or benefits from
    Eliza Madrigal: very worthwhile though
Mickorod Renard: ah UI see,,I do that when I read,,i become aware I am no longer reading but playing out a dream related to the book
Eliza Madrigal: yes, which can be wonderful too :))
Aphrodite Macbain: I find memorizing the text is the best way to really focus on it and enjoy it. But who has time?
Mickorod Renard: crikey, never managed to remember the text unless I can picture it and read it from my mind
Bleu Oleander: time is always choices
Eliza Madrigal: memorizing seems like sketching? where you would pick up so much detail... you were lucky to have had teachers who asked you to do that Aph!
Mickorod Renard: poem form is good for that
Eliza Madrigal: (although I hated memorizing shakespeare in school)
Aphrodite Macbain: I remember liking it. Like memorizing MacBeth -I squeezed all the goodness from it
Aphrodite Macbain: and then when I watched it performed, it was fabulous
Mickorod Renard: my level of education only required you to wake up in the morning
Eliza Madrigal: ah, much better student...perhaps why you find yourself on a study tour to spain now :))
    Eliza Madrigal: hahah Mick
    --BELL--
Aphrodite Macbain: I was a very absent minded student
Aphrodite Macbain: I really had to work hard to memorize things
Aphrodite Macbain: I like to think it helped my memory
Aphrodite Macbain: but I dont think it did
Mickorod Renard: love to hear more about your latest study itinary Aph
    Aphrodite Macbain: Me too :-)
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Aphrodite Macbain: we fly to Madrid and take the train to Cordoba

Aphrodite Macbain: learning from each other
Bruce Mowbray: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism.
Mickorod Renard: they did much of that in many parts of the Med
Aphrodite Macbain: then the Spanish Inquisition happened and kicked out the Jews and Muslims
    Bleu Oleander: http://travelinginspain.com/Mezquita.htm
Bruce Mowbray: not to mention Christians witches, heretics, etc etc etc.
Bleu Oleander: one of my favorite places I've ever been
Aphrodite Macbain: also the various Muslim sects began to fight - the Sunnis, Shiites etc
    Aphrodite Macbain: Mezquita?
    Bleu Oleander: yes
    Bleu Oleander: incredible
Bruce Mowbray: The Muslim art of south Spain had a profound influence on M.C. Escher's work.
Mickorod Renard: I didnt know that Bleu..but funny on this last trip I had i visited a few cathedreals that were originally Mosques
Aphrodite Macbain: It had a profound influence on many things
Bruce Mowbray: (he says that in his autobiography).
    Bruce Mowbray nods.
Aphrodite Macbain: yes- much of the architecture was altered and used by the conquering religion
Bleu Oleander: there's a cathedral in the middle of the mosque ... amazing
Aphrodite Macbain: they did that in Istanbul: the Hagia Sophia mosque was originally Christian
    Aphrodite Macbain: wow
    Agatha Macbeth: Yep
Mickorod Renard: I went to a massive Mosque in Cassablanca..not sure it might be the biggest..but modern
Aphrodite Macbain: It's funny that that time (about 700-1300) were called the "Dark Ages." They were anything but dark.
Mickorod Renard: yes, that one in Istanbul i came across whilst reading Pistis Sophia..a glostic work
    Mickorod Renard: gnostic
    Aphrodite Macbain: glostic?
    Mickorod Renard: :)
    Aphrodite Macbain: ah
Mickorod Renard: Sophia means knowledge or wisdom
    Aphrodite Macbain: Saint Wisdom
Mickorod Renard: we sure read some wierd stuff between us
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Bleu Oleander: :)
Aphrodite Macbain: well- maybe we're weird too
Eliza Madrigal: that could be the byline for the group now
    Mickorod Renard: yayyy
    Aphrodite Macbain: "being Weird"
Bleu Oleander: interesting that we read
    Mickorod Renard: play as weird
Mickorod Renard: have we discussed what to read next?
    Bleu Oleander: ha!
Aphrodite Macbain: I am trying to download books as they are so expensive otherwise. I even bought a new tablet so I could read them comfortably
Eliza Madrigal: https://wiki.playasbeing.org/Chronicles/The_Chapter_13%3a_Beginning_of_the_Second_Year_of_Play_as_Being/E._The_Adams_Rubble_story%2c_continued (photo of SL's St Catherines on this page)
Aphrodite Macbain: who writes the instructions...?
Bleu Oleander: I mostly get my books on kindle now
    Aphrodite Macbain: yes
Mickorod Renard: I have read a few on my phone using google books
    Aphrodite Macbain: through Amazon?
    Bleu Oleander: yes
Aphrodite Macbain: are we reading the next chapter for Thursday?
    Bleu Oleander: chap 10?
Mickorod Renard: good idea,,which one is that?
Eliza Madrigal expects everyone to have finished Paradise Lost by Thursday, hahah
    Mickorod Renard: ah 10, great
    --BELL--
    Agatha Macbeth: Perfect
Mickorod Renard: will remind himself which one that is
    Bleu Oleander: ha! Eliza
Agatha Macbeth: The one after number 9
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, was about to ask that -- also, I will read Paradise Lost for Thursday . . . . even though it is so L_O_N_G!
    Eliza Madrigal grins
Bruce Mowbray: btw, I can post a free mp3 audio reading of PL if anyone wants it.
Mickorod Renard: how long does it take to watch the you tube version?
    Bruce Mowbray: no idea, Mick.
    Agatha Macbeth: Nice
Eliza Madrigal: each book is like 40 minutes long
    Eliza Madrigal: 12 books
    Bleu Oleander: yes
Mickorod Renard: 480 divided by 60
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, it's that long in the mp3 audios too.
Eliza Madrigal: that's what happens when my kids have Thanksgiving with their family and I'm left with noodles and George
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
    Bruce Mowbray: ha ha.
Bleu Oleander: librivox has different voices for the different chapters which may help
Mickorod Renard: is that 4 hours?
Bruce Mowbray: Something like that, mick.
Aphrodite Macbain: I'm reading on KIndle, " Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews and Christians created Culture and Tolerance in Medieval Spain" Hard to chose between the 2 books ..along with Mr Proust.
Bruce Mowbray: Mr Proust is FINE FINE FINE!
Aphrodite Macbain: Some wasy Milton complements the text
    Aphrodite Macbain: ways
Aphrodite Macbain: but I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed
Bleu Oleander: yes it can be
Aphrodite Macbain: too many words, too much information
Mickorod Renard: with so many diferent books being read by us all maybe we should have a rest before the next chosen one?
    Bruce Mowbray: too little time.
    Aphrodite Macbain: nods
Aphrodite Macbain: too little energy to be able to focuss
Aphrodite Macbain: I'm also thinking of brushing up my Spanish..
Bruce Mowbray: Paradise Lost is 10 hours total on mp3.
    Aphrodite Macbain: wow
Eliza Madrigal: would that there come thirst for knowledge of cooperative/tolerance examples in our time
Mickorod Renard: I would like to do PL but not sure I would choose to do a discussion on it
Aphrodite Macbain: yes- the book I'm reading and the course I will be taking will have some valuable lessons...
Aphrodite Macbain: there is so much racist violence right now
Eliza Madrigal: a quest not to know, and not in the mysterious creative sense
    Aphrodite Macbain: nods
Eliza Madrigal: I was kidding about expecting reading btw Mick, don't feel pressured... but I'm thankful to have read it, equal to our reading the Greenblatt book, so thank Bleu for her pressure, hehe
Mickorod Renard: I would like some lessons in that field, but also I feel there is a pull away from religion in my environment..and i also feel the latest islamic troubles is making me negative. I was glad the other day to read a lot of Rumi
    Mickorod Renard: nop Eliza
Bruce Mowbray: Rumi is FINE FINE FINE.
Bleu Oleander: yw! I enjoyed it too!

Aphrodite Macbain: as they couldn't represent people
    Eliza Madrigal: ah
    Aphrodite Macbain: only text
Aphrodite Macbain: but very beautiful text
    Bruce Mowbray: (and designs).
Aphrodite Macbain: the word was god. God was the word..
Aphrodite Macbain: written all over their mosques
Mickorod Renard: Rumi in my mind expands what one may consider to be God ..especiallly in todays modern world
Aphrodite Macbain: he was a mystic

“My worst habit is I get so tired of winter
I become a torture to those I'm with.

If you are not here, nothing grows.
    I lack clarity. My words
    tangle and knot up.

How to cure bad water? Send it back to the river.
How to cure bad habits? Send me back to you.

When water gets caught in habitual whirlpools,
dig a way out through the bottom
to the ocean. There is a secret medicine
given only to those who hurt so hard
    they can't hope.

The hopers would feel slighted if they knew.

Look as long as you can at the friend you love,
no matter whether that friend is moving away from you
    or coming back toward you.”
