Storm Nordwind: Good morning!
Riddle Sideways: welcome my friend
Storm Nordwind: Sorry I'm late
Riddle Sideways: no problem
Riddle Sideways: not clock watchers here
Storm Nordwind: :)
Riddle Sideways: except some sessions
The following sections are nerdy/geeky/SL topics of no interest. move past to the goodbye session :}
Riddle Sideways: was just writing a notecard of thoughts to you
Storm Nordwind: Oh!
Riddle Sideways: re: library books
Storm Nordwind: That sounds very interesting
Riddle Sideways: and how to use less prims
Storm Nordwind: always good
Riddle Sideways: not sure it should be recorded into log
Riddle Sideways: Oh! the editor can remove
Storm Nordwind: if you are friendly with the editor! ;)
Riddle Sideways: Hi, Thinking about libraries, again. Just read a notecard about somebody collecting URLs to blogs/websites of articles/books people have written and putting in a library project. Also thinking out loud (well, typing) about a little library on plot with limited extra prims.
Riddle Sideways: (please correct where wrong) a book on a shelf would be 1 prim, which adds prims really fast. a book shelf could be 1 prim with a texture that looks like 20 books. Clicking on it brings up a menu to select a title. However, has limited text characters for a title-author. (and is ugly, but quick). Or a pretty picture selector like the new tp HUD
Storm Nordwind: "Riddle and Storm then embark on a frenzied discussion of the minutiae of... ah well, that would be telling. We draw a veil over their ruminations."
Told you to move on!
Riddle Sideways: Is it possible for a script-object to know the coordinates of the mouse?
Storm Nordwind: Yes
Riddle Sideways: so that hover text might change
Riddle Sideways: and select which book by mouse location
Storm Nordwind: And that means build a mesh object representing many books but have a script that knows which is clicked
Riddle Sideways: that might be the best answer
Storm Nordwind: Not sure about hover. Would need to check. Certainly on click
Storm Nordwind brings up the reference document and burrows into the arcane depths
Riddle Sideways: ah! right on it already
Riddle Sideways: you need to learn better procrastination techniques
Riddle Sideways: *methods
Storm Nordwind: I'm out of familiarity with it. I know it's there and have used it to do slide projectors for Kira Cafe. Touch left side of screen to go back a slide. Touch right side to go forward.
Riddle Sideways: so onClick()
Storm Nordwind: Don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today. Because you might enjoy it today, and then you can do it again tomorrow.
Riddle Sideways: writes that down
Riddle Sideways: to paste on the wall
Riddle Sideways: of wise thougths
Storm Nordwind: I heard it on a lunchtime radio station in Portsmouth, England, in the 1980s. It solved my procrastination once and for all.
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: missed that radio show from Portsmith, England on a lunchtime break in the 80's, so have had terrible procrastination forevee
Riddle Sideways: forever
Storm Nordwind laughs
Storm Nordwind: On the screen I used llDetectedTouchST() so that I could get a laser pointer marker to follow the clicked on point.
Storm Nordwind: That's not mouseover though
Riddle Sideways: hmmm, whether it could change hover text that fast
Storm Nordwind: Hover text = bad where things are spatially dense
Riddle Sideways: yes
Riddle Sideways: lots of dialogs boxes "did you want really xyz" are bad too
Storm Nordwind: Could bring up a static particle display, but that would mean texture per book
Storm Nordwind: Could encourage visitor to wear custom HUD and use programmable text prims like used on noticeboards
Storm Nordwind: Decorate the HUD like it was some kind of library reference system in the real world
Storm Nordwind: You click on a book. It send message to HUD with data for display to be inserted in standard template.
Storm Nordwind: brb
Riddle Sideways: k
Storm Nordwind: UPS at door. 2 mins
Riddle Sideways: oh, just love when UPS comes to the door
Riddle Sideways: brings presents
Storm Nordwind: back
Riddle Sideways: did you get anything good?
Storm Nordwind: 36 cans of diet Pepsi with Splenda. Seems hellishly inefficient, but Amazon Prime plus can't get the stuff anywhere else at the moment.
Riddle Sideways: Amazon Prime, the drug of choice dealer
Riddle Sideways: and delivers to the door
Storm Nordwind sighs yes
Riddle Sideways: main computer did not fix itself in the several days we were away
Riddle Sideways: should have bought a new one from Amazon
Riddle Sideways: and gotten it here by now
Storm Nordwind: You could install the HUD and it could minimize itself to a transparent pixel on screen. It would only apear, small, when you were in the library, and come to full size on touch. No need to keep wearing it.
Riddle Sideways: that would be good
Storm Nordwind: Sorry to hear of computer woes :(
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: as long the invisibles were not clickable
Storm Nordwind: Right. That's easy to do
Riddle Sideways: which happened last time
Riddle Sideways: ? only when in library?
Storm Nordwind: You put a transmitter in the place where your books are. When you get with x meters, the HUD pixel detects it and enlarges itself. When you leave it minimizes again
Riddle Sideways: saves this all away to study, learn, try, debug, try again, repeat
Storm Nordwind: hehe
Storm Nordwind: Now I'll get an intern to code it up while I drink coffee
Riddle Sideways: hehehehe
Riddle Sideways: intern is moving the Costco boxes out of the way so office can be walked into
Storm Nordwind: haha!
Riddle Sideways: other intern is trying to get a boot drive into booting
Storm Nordwind: Sounds like you should go surfing in the interim
Riddle Sideways: good plan
Riddle Sideways: cold here, looks for heavy wet suit
Riddle Sideways: or web surfing
Riddle Sideways: have that pile of youtube vids to watch
Riddle Sideways: the meowing on screen drives kitten crazy
Storm Nordwind: However, you have given me the idea for the PaB library. There are so many ways to access book-like info, but a HUD would be a nice top level access controller. (And I have saved 400 extra prims anyway for the library.)
Into yet another boring SL discussion, so on down even further!
Riddle Sideways: there is THE question.... how did you save those prims?
Riddle Sideways: taking stuff away? or linking
Storm Nordwind: Remember the Terraces are a very old build from 2007
Storm Nordwind: They are all prim type.
Storm Nordwind: So go through every single object, linking in specific ways and swiyching to convex hull (which was available when first built)
Storm Nordwind: *wasn't availab;le
Storm Nordwind: Nothing removed
Storm Nordwind: Some bought objects are no mod. But many are and I've changed them
Storm Nordwind: All own build stuff rationalized
Riddle Sideways: lots of work
Storm Nordwind: And some things cannot be improved because of twisted shapes
Riddle Sideways: get the intern to do it
Storm Nordwind: Yes. But worth it to reuse the land
Storm Nordwind: I keep think I'm done and then I find something else.
Storm Nordwind: Actually I do think I'm done now. 1750 prims for a library should be good
Riddle Sideways: should be
Storm Nordwind: And general play park maybe ;-)
Storm Nordwind: hmm... a roller coaster?
Riddle Sideways: oooooo
Storm Nordwind: No... would distract the scholars in the library
Riddle Sideways: have ridden some nice roller coasters in SL
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: there use to be a small fun park east of here near the Zoo
Riddle Sideways: both gone
Storm Nordwind: Yup
Storm Nordwind: Jeju was what I called a "rubbish sim" for a long time. My first land was in Shiot before I moved to Mieum.
Riddle Sideways: good name "rubbish sim"
Riddle Sideways: lots of random stuff packed in it
Storm Nordwind: Mrs Nordwind had land all over the place. Now we have none, not even the Kuan Yin terraces, though I have build rights there. But one of us may rejoin and get the free tier somewhere. I suspect she'd like a plot near an art community, if such a thing exists in SL nowadays.
Riddle Sideways: many of the big Art projects seen on the front page are now on Linden land
Storm Nordwind does not look at this front page of which you speak
Riddle Sideways: those destinations on the log in screen
Riddle Sideways: looks at them sometimes
Riddle Sideways: currently there is the naked portrat field
maybe interesting from here...
Storm Nordwind: wut?
Riddle Sideways: looking
Riddle Sideways: "Naked With a Chair"
Storm Nordwind: where are you looking? On the SL website, or on the app?
Riddle Sideways: now looking at the "Destinations" button popup
Riddle Sideways: featured events
Storm Nordwind: Got it. Thank you. Almost never use it, unless I'm bored, and I'm never bored.
Riddle Sideways: this is SL Viewer, not sure where it is on FS
Riddle Sideways: never bored either, but distracted easily so that procrastionation works
Storm Nordwind: It's a likely marker on the left of the screen. You get a small popup on touch with mouseover info for the pics and offers of TPs.
Storm Nordwind: haha
Storm Nordwind: I never seem to get round to procrastinating
Riddle Sideways: well good for you.
Riddle Sideways: seem to get those 'round to it"s here a lot
--BELL--
Riddle Sideways: speaking of which... one distraction just yelled down about an email from the backup online people came and is not understood
Riddle Sideways: dealing with that request can not be put off
Nope, you can start reading from here!
Riddle Sideways: thanks for your time, today
Storm Nordwind: Thank you for hosting :)
Riddle Sideways: have fun library-ing
Storm Nordwind: See you soon again I hope :)
Riddle Sideways: Sorrry Beel
