The Guardian for this meeting was stevenaia Michinaga. The comments are by stevenaia Michinaga.
stevenaia Michinaga: hi storm
Storm Nordwind: Good evening. Sorry to be so late.
stevenaia Michinaga: how was your day, no problem, just getting some PaB mail out
Storm Nordwind: I just this minute saw one of them
stevenaia Michinaga: yes
stevenaia Michinaga: slight complications
Storm Nordwind: That seems a great shame
stevenaia Michinaga: no big deal
stevenaia Michinaga: nothing is simple when dealing with complex systems
Storm Nordwind: You're right.
--BELL--
Storm Nordwind: And Linden Lab has never made it really easy
Storm Nordwind: I've been pretty busy all day. Missed several arty invitations already and only just scraped in for this!
stevenaia Michinaga: I'm amazed anyone figured this stuff out in the first place
stevenaia Michinaga: art things in SL
Storm Nordwind: We managed. I was Piet's advisor I guess, steered him through. The most complicated bit was when he relinquished stuff. Now THAT was complicated.
Storm Nordwind: But SL is a good place for art and artists
Storm Nordwind: And, I'm finding, writers and poets
stevenaia Michinaga: yes, and creative builders
Storm Nordwind: I still have to get into Sansar to see if that's a worthy successor
stevenaia Michinaga: things like gravity and fire exits have little meaning
stevenaia Michinaga: Sansar? Nex gen SL?
Storm Nordwind: Haha right!
Storm Nordwind: Yes it is. And same company LL/ Though from what I've seen so far, and I could be totally wrong, user generated content will be harder to do but of higher quality. But we'll see, as like I said I could be totally wrong
stevenaia Michinaga: if no one attends, will it exist for very long?
Storm Nordwind: No idea. It's not at production stage yet. It's currently in open beta, so anyone can have a go and give feedback.
stevenaia Michinaga: hmm, Windows only...sigh
Storm Nordwind: And it was originally VR only I think, but PC desktop seems to work
stevenaia Michinaga: I have windows 7 running on an older mac, not the power needed for that however
Storm Nordwind: Right. Needs quite a system I suspect.
Storm Nordwind: VR hasn't been a whirlwind take-off so far. Much more gradual progress.
stevenaia Michinaga: wonders why they just don;t run it through a browser
Storm Nordwind: My old super laptop couldn't do VR - that's the one I built everything for PaB in!
stevenaia Michinaga: was at an architect's convention is week in NYC, they keep trying to push VR but since it isolates the user it becomes dificult to interact with others in that environment
Storm Nordwind: Right. And that's why AR has more of a chance at first IMHO
Storm Nordwind: There's a free test program on Steam you get test VR capability with. My old laptop managed 65 frames a second. But they needed 90. This new desktop will do 250 :)
stevenaia Michinaga: must software I use supports it, but I have enough trouble showing clients how to do anything with models other than me showing and telling
Storm Nordwind: AR would be good though? right. Build a model and superimpose action?
Storm Nordwind: View the model through on a tablet with camera and superimpose what you want them to see
stevenaia Michinaga: yes that is also avalable but if it;s not completely intuative to set up it usually is not worth the time
Storm Nordwind: Understood
stevenaia Michinaga: so alot of the problem is the user interface, not how cool it could be
Storm Nordwind: People forget how many years it took before the mouse was accepted as user interface!
--BELL--
stevenaia Michinaga: I see Facebook has done little with Oculus Rift they purchased
Storm Nordwind: Right. Just a future cash cow? I wouldn't know as I'm not a Facebook user.
stevenaia Michinaga: I know someone who used it for a bit, they said they got naucious after a while
Storm Nordwind: I know several virtual pilots who use them with their flight simulators. Once you're used to it they say there;s no going back
stevenaia Michinaga: nothing came of the purchase that a FB used uses.... yet
Storm Nordwind nods
stevenaia Michinaga: I hvae a 3d printer someone gave me and I use it rarely
stevenaia Michinaga: it;s very slow and prone to build failures, usually after several hours of printing :(
Storm Nordwind: I've seen them build houses now
stevenaia Michinaga: yes, not quite mainstream yet
Storm Nordwind: When they build themselves, they will have learned to reproduce, and then watch out! ;)
stevenaia Michinaga: indeed
Storm Nordwind: OK well I will leave you to your messaging, Thank you for hosting :)
stevenaia Michinaga: you are welcome, thanks for joining me
Storm Nordwind: My pleasure
stevenaia Michinaga: have a good weekend
