Pema was the Guardian for this session, the comment are his.

It was 7 am again in Rieul, and Maxine was waiting in the tea house, when I stepped in.

    Maxine Walden: hi, Pema
    Pema Pera: Hi Maxine!
    Pema Pera: How are you?
Maxine Walden: Im well, yourself? In Tokyo?
    Maxine Walden: or your typist?
Maxine Walden: (you were going for a train last SL session)
Pema Pera: just a moment, sorry, some important IMs — back soon!
    Maxine Walden: right
Pema Pera: okay, sorry about that
Pema Pera: that is the problem with SL
Pema Pera: as soon as I log in, I find those IMs and most of the time they are not so urgent
Pema Pera: but sometimes they are.
Maxine Walden: no problem, one mind, lots of tugs at the sleeve
Pema Pera: and I like your new clothes!
    Pema Pera: quite a transformation
Maxine Walden: oh, thanks, yes, Dakini’s gift, transformations are good things
    Pema Pera: yes, indeed!
Pema Pera: and yes I am in Tokyo now
Maxine Walden: much enjoyed the PaB group discussion last time, energy and interest

I had commented on Maxine’s clothes, for the first time no longer those coming with her default avatar. At that point Cal stopped by.

    Caledonia Heron: morning
    Pema Pera: Hi Cal!
Pema Pera: good seeing you again!
Maxine Walden: and your sharing a bit of your logging experience; with a lot of RL stuff needing attention I have let that lag a bit, but feel renewed in my efforts…hi, Cal, nice to see you
Caledonia Heron: same here :) Hi Maxine
Pema Pera: Cal, the house in the forest is a lot less dark and clammy now
Pema Pera: Storm has lit a fire
Pema Pera: and added nice benches ;>)
    Caledonia Heron: ah, nice
Pema Pera: we can have a look later
    Caledonia Heron: I will visit
Caledonia Heron: no need for goth attire any longer
    Pema Pera: hehe
Maxine Walden: wonderful, and I may need a tp to get there or directions
Caledonia Heron: it’s beyond the hall of appearances, beside the waterfall, not far
Maxine Walden: you know, I have not been to the hall of appearances, either
Pema Pera: Max, you may want to walk around a bit in the neighborhood some day, to get to know the neighborhood — doesn’t take long
Maxine Walden: maybe after today. tha hall of app is nearby here?
Pema Pera: yes, a minute walking or less
    Pema Pera: even less flying
Pema Pera: we will go over there in a bit, for the guardian’s meeting
    Maxine Walden: right,
Caledonia Heron: so the guardian stuff takes up there at the 1/2 hour, yes?
    Caledonia Heron: jinx :)

I quickly looked up “jinx” in Wikipedia, and found “A common slang term used when two people say the same thing at the same time” :-)

    Pema Pera: yes indeed
Pema Pera: last week we started the guardian’s meeting at 7
Pema Pera: but it was hard to fit everyone in this tea house
Pema Pera: but to go to the other place would leave people coming here without person to meet
Pema Pera: unless we ask a host to come
Pema Pera: who can then not be with us in the other place
Pema Pera: so I suggested 7:30 as a compromise
Maxine Walden: thoughtfully trying to cover all the bases
Caledonia Heron: the host/guardian split bugs me alittle but I guess that is for 7:30 talk
Pema Pera: yeah, I prefer to simplify too
Pema Pera: we will have to let all this grow naturally
Pema Pera: guardian was an obvious role
Pema Pera: and the name just came up
Maxine Walden: organic growth may smooth the edges and feelings that can arise
Pema Pera: and then it was also natural to have a division between those who are willing to do this once a week, and those who prefer to be on standbye, but for one reason or another prefer not to commit to a particular day
Pema Pera: so that gave rise to the name host
Caledonia Heron: the intellectual reasoning for the groups is understandable, just how to mesh with SL construct is sticky
Pema Pera: as long as we treat both groups the same otherwise I think there is no problem
Pema Pera: you mean what powers to give?
Pema Pera: like ejecting and rezzing?
Caledonia Heron: yes abilities and the fact that everyone is typically maxed on on groups
    Pema Pera: yes
Maxine Walden: it would seem that the more responsibility accepted the more power/privilege allowed…but still can get into the included/excluded feelings
Pema Pera: I think that in our case there is no need to make fine distinctions
Pema Pera: both hosts and guardians can be treated the same
Caledonia Heron: Yes Maxine *and* it comes down to operation issues of how SL works as to how to structure things
Maxine Walden: yes, and there I am very much a novice
Maxine Walden: so cannot carry much responsibility for the group
Caledonia Heron: you appear in other ways :)
Maxine Walden: yes, will contribute as I can…sorry you both were thinking of structural issues
Pema Pera: oh, I think the solution is rather simple — but we can talk about that in the group in ten minutes
Pema Pera: and I certainly appreciate your contributions, Maxine, like the contributions of all of us!
Maxine Walden: various contributions which enrich the web of roots, as it were

Indeed, during the guardians’ meeting, soon afterward, we would decide unanimously to abolish the short-lived distinction we had made the week before between hosts and guardians.

Caledonia Heron: funny - a thought just popped on me how I did not get you at first Maxine but more now appreciate your thoughtful comments
Caledonia Heron: a true benefit of our group and understanding people
Maxine Walden: ah, we came together from different worlds so to speak?
    Thorberg Nordlicht: good morning
Caledonia Heron: I think so, but both human, women, professionals, perhaps both mothers, sisters, and interested in the “be” potential :)
Maxine Walden: as I recall I was in awe of your world Cal when we first met…hi Thor…yes interesting, Cal
    Pema Pera: morning Thor!
    Thorberg Nordlicht: :-)
    Caledonia Heron: :)
    Caledonia Heron: hey thor
Thorberg Nordlicht: i’ll just sit and listen; not awake yet
Caledonia Heron: compare/contrast Thor, common ground discussion
Pema Pera: I’m so glad to hear both of you talking that way, Cal and Maxine, not sure how to even respond, feeling a bit shy in fact . . . .
    Caledonia Heron: just observations :)
    Pema Pera: :)

After this touching exchange, a little humerous confusion with Cal having used shorthand texting remarks which Maxine took literally, understandably. Meanwhile it was fun seeing Thorberg waking up and getting into gear.

Maxine Walden: feeling on common ground with Thor from the time you met, something like that, Cal?
Caledonia Heron: mmm no, I do not not really know Thor as yet….trying to fill him in on our general topic
Thorberg Nordlicht: ((hmm, should wake up and pay attention; somebody mentioned my name))
Pema Pera: Cal was talking to Thor, not about Thor, Maxine ;>)
Pema Pera: filling him in on the conversation
Pema Pera: in abbreviated way ;>)
Maxine Walden: thanks, got my prepositions/directions of the converstion tangled
    Caledonia Heron: yes, thanks Pema
Pema Pera: this whole texting culture is fascinating
Pema Pera: but takes a while to grow into
Caledonia Heron: lol, yes - hopscotch text is like that
Maxine Walden: another part of the web of conversation
Pema Pera: yup, like entering a new culture
    Pema Pera: yes
    Thorberg Nordlicht: ((thinking: “hopscotch text”??))
Pema Pera: getting into SL is really like immigrating
Pema Pera: but now we should get up and go to the hall of appearance, to meet the rest of the group
Caledonia Heron: a picture of how text conversation jumps around Thor
Thorberg Nordlicht: ((thinking: everyone talking at once; responding to two comments ago??))
Pema Pera: we will walk, Maxine
Pema Pera: you can just follow us
    Pema Pera: it is nearby
Caledonia Heron: I will join you in a bit - my husband cooked me breakfast :)
Maxine Walden: …right, I need to follow the group, so like a little sister I will say ‘wait for me’
Pema Pera: the fresh air will wake Thor up ;>)
Thorberg Nordlicht: we moving to hall of appearances?
    Thorberg Nordlicht: oops, sorry
    Thorberg Nordlicht: i’ll wait here
    Pema Pera: over here, Maxine!
    Maxine Walden: ok,
    Pema Pera: Maxine, behind you!
Pema Pera: this is the hall of appearance

At the hall of Appearance we met Solobill, Storm, and later Genesis, and then Caledonia would join us again. We had our second Guardians meeting and we indeed decided to abolish the role of `host’ and only to keep the role of `guardian’ as we had already discussed. We also talked a bit more about the pub plans. Finally we walked into the growing forest, in front of the long staircase off the Hall of Appearance, where we gathered in the other pub that Storm had already created there. It looked cozy now, with a blazing fire in the hearth and old heavy wooden seats with larg semicircular solid armrests. We staid there for a while, wishing for beer, and then Storm and I took a balloon ride, along the newly programmed route.

Balloon whispers: Welcome to the Storm’s tour balloon.
Balloon whispers: This is a tour around Play as Being’s forest land.
Balloon whispers: Please remain seated during the tour.
Balloon whispers: In case of emergency, please follow the safety guidelines.
Balloon whispers: Please ensure you are sitting comfortably and prepare for launch
Balloon whispers: In the distance to the south you’ll see Dakini’s Tara Ling, a Tibetan Buddhist temple.
Balloon whispers: And to the north west you’ll see Storm’s holographic Buddha statue.
Pema Pera: This is such a great idea, this balloon
Pema Pera: did you have this lying around?
Pema Pera: or made or bought it?
Storm Nordwind: No I bought it specially
Balloon whispers: And you’ll see our founder Pema’s original shack down below!
    Pema Pera: thank you!
    Storm Nordwind: Oh wait
Storm Nordwind: These are new trees!
Pema Pera: I love the dialogue of the balloon
Storm Nordwind: We’ll fly through them!
    Pema Pera: yes

Dakini had kindly planted some seeds around my little hut, which had quickly grown into full blown trees, birches and other types. But now Storm would have to reprogram the route to avoid flying through the trees!

Balloon whispers: Next we will fly towards and over the Hall of Appearance.
Balloon whispers: To the east will be Dakini’s Peace Pagoda and, in the distance behind that, the Zen Retreat and its tea house.
Storm Nordwind: I’ve changed the dialogue now
    Storm Nordwind: Look behind you
    Pema Pera: yes
Balloon whispers: Beware! We are crossing over a sim boundary!
Balloon whispers: We are flying into Magoja Forest.
Balloon whispers: The area to the east will also be forested at the end of June 2008.
Storm Nordwind: orchards and a pond in the corner
Storm Nordwind: I found I had rezzing permission on a LL plot today and hid some eyesores!
Balloon whispers: The outflow from the falls below us will feed streams flowing through the rest of the forest.
    Pema Pera: great!
Storm Nordwind: I extended the copse to your right and behind
    Pema Pera: copse?
Balloon whispers: We are flying over the Forest Inn and past the tallest tree in the forest, 50 metres high (164 feet).
Storm Nordwind: set of low bushes
    Pema Pera: ah!
Pema Pera: it is really coming together
Pema Pera: and I was so amazed at the transformation of the forest house!
Storm Nordwind: My favourite is the birch stand on the hill I built to your right
    Pema Pera: yes
Pema Pera: Dakini gave me some birches
    Pema Pera: near my house
Storm Nordwind: To the left - I’m not sure yet
Balloon whispers: Within the forest there will be private and communal retreats, hermitages and other small homes.

Storm realized that I was still on default settings of small rez distance, a side effect of the new viewer where the tunable distance now is so well hidden that I hadn’t found it yet!

Pema Pera: I wish I could see he whole forest. . . . but I guess it’s too large to rez all at once
Storm Nordwind: Increaase your draw distance
Balloon whispers: Beware! We are crossing over a sim boundary!
Pema Pera: I think I have maximum
Balloon whispers: This is a spur of the forest land in another sim.
Pema Pera: where again is that?
Storm Nordwind: ctrl-P prefences > graphics tab > custom
    Pema Pera: no
Balloon whispers: Beware! We are crossing over a sim boundary!
    Pema Pera: that has changed!!
Storm Nordwind: Draw distance is top right of the revealed things
    Pema Pera: THAT EXPLAINS!
    Storm Nordwind: right!
Pema Pera: I used to have that at 512 m
Storm Nordwind: That needs a vert fast network link
    Pema Pera: so much better!!!!!
Balloon whispers: Beware! We are crossing over a sim boundary!
    Pema Pera: or 300
    Pema Pera: finally !!!!
    Storm Nordwind: that’s good
Storm Nordwind: Come walk or fly back and see the difference
Balloon whispers: But most of this corner will be forested.
Pema Pera: I just couldn’t understand what had happened — for many months I had maximum distance, and I blamed the change on lag
Storm Nordwind: New viewer, new system
    Pema Pera: now I know!
Pema Pera: that little white square, to hit that, is very counterintuitive!
    Storm Nordwind: Yes it is
Pema Pera: I had been looking for “distance” a few times, could never find it
Balloon whispers: We hope you enjoyed the trip!
    Pema Pera: sure enjoyed it!
Storm Nordwind: Support have obviously found they have to deal with the less techie people
Storm Nordwind: Now walk back or fly back and enjoy it properly
Pema Pera: but the default draw distance is atrocoiusly small
    Storm Nordwind: indeed
Pema Pera: so I’ll have to sleep soon — 1 am here
    Storm Nordwind: ok
Pema Pera: well, Storm thanks again for everything!
    Storm Nordwind: Everything froze

And indeed, I crashed and perhaps Storm too. The end of another long van very varied session.
