Having still some time to spare, I walked over and found Maxine there
Pema Pera: Maxine, our region will restart in five minutes
Pema Pera: let’s go to the beach in a couple minutes
Pema Pera: I’ll go there in a minute
Pema Pera: and then send you a tp
Pema Pera: let’s see whether anyone else will show up
Second Life: Your region will restart in 3 minutes and 0 seconds for maintenance.

Pema Pera: Hi Maxine!
Maxine Walden: ok,
Pema Pera: Have you been here before?
Maxine Walden: yes, came yestereday
Maxine Walden: I met Storm here, it is wonderful
Maxine Walden: with all the sea sounds and atmosphere
Dakini sent me an IM, asking where we had taken refuge, and I offered her a tp.
Pema Pera: Hi Dakini!
Maxine Walden: oh, hi Dakini
Pema Pera: Wow, yet another dress!
Dakini Rhode: hi!
Pema Pera: can you both hear the waves?
Dakini Rhode: i am going thru my inventory
Dakini Rhode: yes
Dakini Rhode: i was in those robes too long…
Maxine Walden: this is a wonderful place
Maxine Walden: I met Storm here yesterday when I came to just visit for a moment and he seemed understandably proud
Pema Pera: oh, he should be!
Maxine Walden: yes
Pema Pera: It’s amazing what he has built — did you read his blog, that he slept only two hours, the night he built the mangrove forest?
Pema Pera: the beginning of it?
Maxine Walden: no, I have not seen that yet; he really gave his all to build this, all of you have given so much, you, Dakini, Storm
At that moment, Dakini rezzed the perfect outdoors table set: a wooden table surrounded by four wooden chairs, fitting in perfectly with the larger circular wooden gathering space at the end of the pier, where we all had gathered.
Pema Pera: ah, thank you Dakini, how fitting!
Maxine Walden: and now these giant chairs, oh, Dakini, your bequest?
Maxine Walden: oh, not so giant
Pema Pera: they looked giant when they were up in the air
Dakini Rhode: i think they were a little close to your camera Max
Maxine Walden: ah, another lesson on perspective
Dakini Rhode: i’m in a mtg IRL (gone)
Dakini Rhode: hope to tt u soon
Maxine Walden: bye, Dakini
Pema Pera: bye Dakini!
Maxine Walden: seaside ambience…so lovely
Pema Pera: hahaa
Pema Pera: how did you do that?
Pema Pera: wow!
Dakini Rhode: touch the chair :-)))
Pema Pera: yes, I figured!
Pema Pera: haha
Pema Pera: what fun
Pema Pera: do you see how you can do that, Maxine?
Dakini had changed her pose, first by putting up her legs onto the table, then by folding her arms in front of her and resting her head on them face down.
Dakini Rhode: haha this is good for being gone…
Pema Pera: yup!
Maxine Walden: no, I am not sure
Pema Pera: and for me too, it being 11 pm now
Pema Pera: time to put my feet up
Pema Pera: Maxine, left click and then choose “touch”
Pema Pera: each time you do that, you are sampling a different pose
Maxine Walden: ok
Pema Pera: hahaha
Pema Pera: what a bunch
Maxine Walden: oh, yes,
Pema Pera: typical lazy sea side folks
Maxine Walden: right, never doing much but lazing around…
Pema Pera: Dakini must have a huge inventory, and Storm too, the way they always find things to pick out that are appropriate for any situation!
Pema Pera: from frying pan to pillow fight . . . .
Dakini Rhode gave you Snapshot : North Coastal, Buyeo (4, 86, 22).
Maxine Walden: I am impressed with their inventories, Dakini especially, with her gift to me as well
Dakini Rhode: been here too long…
Pema Pera: Now it seems like we are in a seance . . . .
Pema Pera: either that or all fast asleep
Maxine Walden: and here we have a pic of us lazing…
Pema Pera: afternoon nap near the sea shore
All three of us were resting our heads on our hands, with only our hair visible from above. At that point, Dakini rezzed a tray with a sake set with square wooden drinking cups.
Maxine Walden: yeah, nice, uh?
Pema Pera: wow, it’s getting better and better!
Maxine Walden: oh, and now something more…yes better and better
Pema Pera: hahaha
Pema Pera: we are all grabbing for the bottle!
Maxine Walden: while appearing not to
Pema Pera: and seemingly mimicking each other’s actions
Dakini Rhode: very funny
Pema Pera: in the same order
We all cycled through our poses, as if we were doing morning gymnastics following the same teacher.
Pema Pera: laid back all now
Pema Pera: still sea shore style
Pema Pera: how fitting
Maxine Walden: yes, really laid back all of us…not a thought to be had…
Sake Set owned by Dakini Rhode gave you ‘Cup of Sake’
Cup of Sake whispers: Enjoy : )
Maxine Walden: sea sounds …and sake…what more could one want?
Cup of Sake whispers: Enjoy : )
Dakini Rhode: i can think of something
Pema Pera: unfortunately, I can’t drink the sake it seems
Dakini Rhode: the sake animation should override the sitting animation
Dakini Rhode: yes that is my thought
Dakini Rhode: always something more…
Dakini Rhode: o well i’ll just keep the sake in my pocket
Dakini Rhode: save it for later
Pema Pera: sure
Maxine Walden: while the sea sounds make it ok not to get that one thing more…
Dakini kept us informed of what she was doing in Real Life while goofing off at the beach with us in Second Life.
Dakini Rhode: i walking thru tech specs for 1099 tax extracts… IRL
Pema Pera: I was thinking the same thing!
Maxine Walden: thanks for the offer
Maxine Walden: care to share the numbers or specs?
Dakini Rhode: the 3292…
Dakini Rhode: on the line 2 section
Dakini Rhode: lol
Dakini Rhode: need more numbers?
Pema Pera: Hi Fael!
Fael Illyar: Hello :)
Maxine Walden: hi, Fael
Pema Pera: or I should say
Pema Pera: moimoi Pema tassa
With a glance at Fael’s profile, I had noticed that she spoke both Finnish and Japanese, and just the other day I had witnessed a Finnish greeting. I had teleported Fael over, after Hotaru had introduced her via IM and had told me she would be interested in joining us — Hotaru self was in a meeting and couldn’t come.
Pema Pera: Fael is a friend of Hotaru
Dakini Rhode: hi Fael! welcome!
Maxine Walden: no, thanks, not as acquainted as I might be with the numbers/specs…just wondering
Pema Pera: Hotaru could not come, but she sent Fael over instead
Pema Pera: 日本語も話しますか?
Fael Illyar: はい、日本語も話せます。
Dakini Rhode: Max, this is like my numbers…
Maxine Walden: ah…
Dakini Rhode: amazi like the little pictures, even tho i don’t understand the meaning
Maxine Walden: so many languages…
Pema Pera: Our sim is down, for maintainance
Pema Pera: that’s why we are here
Pema Pera: So you do speak Finnish?
Maxine Walden: yes, Dakini, I was looking at the tiny pics as well
Fael Illyar: Well, yes, I’m from Finland myself.
Pema Pera: was “moimoi Pema tassa” correct?
Fael Illyar: Correct, yes.
Pema Pera: two of our neighbors in Rieul are Finnish
Maxine Walden: Lovely to be here and meet everyone…will have to go in a couple of minutes
Fael Illyar: I haven’t met anyone else from Finland except the one who introduced me to SL so far.
Fael Illyar: and even he’s a german originally. Barely speaks Finnish.
Pema Pera: ah! I should introduce you to our neighbor
Pema Pera: She has a Finnish coffee bar near where Dakini and I live, in Rieul
Pema Pera: and just a week ago I met her in Tokyo
Pema Pera: She speaks and writes Japanese fluently too.
I was still amazed, meeting so many people in SL who know Japanese.
Pema Pera: How did you learn Japanese?
Fael Illyar: Interesting, knowing some sort of a Finnish community here would be useful for introducing some people here. :)
Faenik is a hairy black ball with eyes and ears.
Fael Illyar: I took a basics course at University and after that I’ve been reading.
Fael Illyar: with a dictionary
Pema Pera: Have you visited Japan?
Fael Illyar: no, I haven’t
Pema Pera: Did Hotaru tell you about our Play as Being explorations?
Maxine Walden: I’ll be going now, enjoy the beach and the relaxedness. Bye
Pema Pera: http://playasbeing.wordpress.com/ is our web site
Fael Illyar: Yes, she did tell me something and gave me the link to the website.
Faenik: could be
I was beginning to get curious about “Faenik” who talked in green letters in the local chat box, although there was no avatar by that name to be seen. This was Faenik’s second utterance
Fael Illyar: I read a few blog entries there a few days ago
Fael Illyar: Sorry for the pause, got a quick phonecall.
Pema Pera: np
Pema Pera: we’re pretty relaxed here at the sea side
Pema Pera: Dakini also had RL things to take care of
Dakini Rhode: watching the sunset…
Fael Illyar: Yes, it is quite relaxing :)
Dakini Rhode: oh RL yes
Pema Pera: normally we meet at the tea house — haha — but the sim went down
Fael Illyar: it was up when I went there.
Pema Pera: something tells me that the pace of life here is even slower than in the rest of SL . . . .
Pema Pera: ah! so it went down only briefly then
Pema Pera: but enought to kick us off
Pema Pera: so the idea of PaB, Play as Being, is to do very very short explorations of the nature of reality
Pema Pera: but very often
Pema Pera: several times a day
Dakini Rhode: technology is amazing… i’m in at least 3 places at once
Pema Pera: haha, Dakini, what is the third place?
Dakini Rhode: my body is at home (sitting on my bed actually)
Fael Illyar: Well, I finally managed to come see what these sessions are about mostly because the sim I was in got a warning and I needed to tp elsewhere and the timing matched :)
I don’t think Fael got a typical impression that morning of what PaB sessions are like :-) , but then again, perhaps there are no typical sessions . . .
Dakini Rhode: i am on the phone… dialed into a meeting at work
Dakini Rhode: i’m getting IMs from other people at work
Dakini Rhode: And I’m here chatting with you in SL
Fael Illyar: hyperconnectivity is quite interesting :)
Dakini Rhode: also getting IMs from other ppl in SL
Dakini Rhode: no more need to bilocate
Pema Pera: so what we are doing in our explorations is something most people call “meditations” but I would actually prefer a more neutral term
Pema Pera: I like “explorations”
Pema Pera: just stopping what you’re doing, for a few seconds
Pema Pera: and when you do that often enough
Pema Pera: every day
Pema Pera: somehow the daily grind doesn’t seem as convincing anymore
Pema Pera: little holes begin to show up in the fabric of reality
Faenik: could be
Ha! The mysterious Faenik spoke up again. It seemed like (s)he was listening and occasionally giving responses which were quite fitting.
Fael Illyar: I already tried that once and got my mind empty but I ended up with nothing to write.
Pema Pera: like seeing things out of the corner of your eyes that you normally don’t see
Pema Pera: new intuitions
Dakini Rhode: i haven’t had much of anything to write for some time now…
Pema Pera: inspirations
Dakini Rhode: Is a phase
Dakini Rhode: things come, things go…
Pema Pera: write in your blog, Dakini, or write as PaB session reflections every 15 minutes?
Dakini Rhode: o dear feet in the sake sorry
Pema Pera: haha
Pema Pera: with blue blood okay perhaps
Dakini had again put her feet up on the table, half over the tray she had placed there, and I was refering to the completely bluish appearance of her avatar.
Dakini Rhode: yes both Pema
Pema Pera: but if you just take a piece of paper and a pen, and let the pen hover over the paper, what happens :-)
Pema Pera: ?
Dakini Rhode: getting quiet
Pema Pera: I mean after a 9-sec thingy?
Dakini Rhode: silence
Dakini Rhode: stillness
Dakini Rhode: i suppose i could write that
Pema Pera: sure
Pema Pera: why not?
Pema Pera: you don’t have to of course
Pema Pera: but in my experience
Pema Pera: doing so then triggers other things to happen
Pema Pera: totally unexpected things
Dakini Rhode: yes, makes sense
Pema Pera: silence is like a hand on the doorknop
Pema Pera: writing “silence” can be the extra little push to open the door
I was happily surprised to hear that Fael had been doing the 9-seconds explorations already.
Fael Illyar: I had the feeling there were many things floating around but nothing that would solidify enough to be possible to express in words.
Pema Pera: It is not so much “expressing what happens into words” but more “spontaneously letting some words come out”
Pema Pera: the words don’t have to express
Pema Pera: or even be related in any way
Faenik: why not?
Pema Pera: they may of course
Pema Pera: but they don’t need to
I had answered Faenik as if the words had been spoken by Fael, but I then realized that they were printed in green and the “l” had been replaced by “nik” in the name :-)
Pema Pera: btw, Faenik, I like your green interjections
Pema Pera: where are you?
Pema Pera: and how do you do that :-) ?
Fael Illyar: Faenik is on my shoulder :)
Pema Pera: ah!
Fael Illyar: I analyzed my logs for things I say most often and picked a few of them for Faenik to randomly say.
Fael Illyar: And a couple of things I haven’t really said but …
So that was what was going on! I had noticed the cute fuzzy hairy creature sitting on Fael’s right shoulder, but had not realized that that could have been Faenik. Since I had a way to print in green as well, I produced a couple green lines as well:
how nice!
please do :-)
Dakini Rhode: haha
Pema Pera wishes for a pet cat on his shoulder
Fael Illyar: Wouldn’t be hard to modify Faenik so that I could make him say whatever I want
Not having as large an inventory as Dakini or Storm, I had to satisfy myself with imagining a cat, my favorite animal, on my shoulder, but at least I could let that animal speak in green.
invisible cat: Faenik, can you tell us a couple of things that Fael hasn’t really said yet?
Fael Illyar: You’ll see them fast enough :)
Pema Pera: :-)
Fael Illyar: Faenik says something that somehow fits the situation surprisingly often
Pema Pera: I noticed!
Pema Pera: That is why I was getting curious
Faenik is a hairy black ball with eyes and ears.
Ah, I should have guessed for the very first phrase that Faenik had said, who had thereby given away his/her identity! Indeed, that was an apt description of the animal sitting on Fael’s shoulder.
Pema Pera: I liked the interjections
invisible cat does not like hair balls
but she likes the ears and eyes!!
Pema Pera: Dakini, do you sometimes carry animals?
Fael Illyar: It’s interesting how often those suit the moment. Makes it feel like it’s not just random
Pema Pera: ah, they are scripted?
Pema Pera: I mean you don’t choose them?
Fael Illyar: I don’t say them myself, no. There is a notecard from which the script randomly chooses what to say
Fael Illyar: at random intervals
Pema Pera: ah, like “why not” and “could be” — sure, yes, they can fit many situations, and it is fun to see how we react to them!
Pema Pera: like a type of oracle
Fael Illyar: Yes :)
invisible cat now feels very self-conscious
not random enough (>_<)
Pema Pera: well maybe I should give my cat a name
=^ェ^=: how is this?
Pema Pera: a pictogram really
Fael Illyar: Hehe, that’s somewhat antiname :)
Pema Pera: Japanese characters come in handy
Pema Pera: katakana e
Pema Pera: for a nose
=^ェ^=: I am an anticat perhaps
Pema Pera: anyway, what fun! But I have to go to an astronomy talk soon
Pema Pera: put on my other hat
At this announcement, Faenik started to talk non-randomly, to my surprise.
Pema Pera: nice meeting you Fael!
Faenik: なるほど^^
Faenik: see you later Pema.
Fael Illyar: nice meeting you too Pema :)
Pema Pera: So surprised to meet two Finns in SL speaking Japanese, within a couple weeks
Fael Illyar: Strange coincidences are quite common.
=^ェ^=: わたしも日本語喋るぞ!
Fael Illyar: makes you wonder if they really are.
=^ェ^=: そうそう
Pema Pera: どうかなあ?
Dakini Rhode: nice to meet you Fael, both my meetings ending at the same time….
Fael Illyar: Yes, nice to meet you two :)
Pema Pera: 日本語
Pema Pera: 字引から日本語を習ったの?
Pema Pera: 信じられないねえ
Fael Illyar: はい、そうだね
Pema Pera: 凄い!!!
Pema Pera: そんなに速く日本語が書けますとか。。。。。
Fael Illyar: 字引じゃない、本とかゲームとかから
Pema Pera: すごい、本当に!
Pema Pera: どうもどうも
Fael Illyar: 字引は道具に過ぎない
Dakini Rhode: have a good morning or evening as it may be….
Pema Pera: you too, Dakini!
Pema Pera: Nice meeting you, Fael!
Dakini Rhode: tc
Pema Pera: have to run to my meeting now!
Fael Illyar: Ok, see you later :)
Pema Pera: see you soon!
