Eliza Madrigal: https://wiki.playasbeing.org/index.php?title=Classes_and_Sessions/Time,_Space,_and_Knowledge/2016.01.07_-_Introduction_%26_Exercises_Overview <--this is for today's session, comments until next week

Before session, Cat expressed finding the Forward difficult, and I agreed...

Eliza Madrigal: Cat, you may appreciate this snippet about Herbert V. Guenther who wrote the Forward: "Günther was a pioneer in addressing contemporary philosophical issues from a deep and learned Buddhist perspective. His work is well known for being difficult to read. Defenders have argued that because both Buddhist and European philosophies have built up rich vocabularies and conceptual systems derived from over the centuries, any attempt at synthesis is necessarily complicated." (wikipedia)

    Catrinamonblue Resident: ty :) that's helpful :)

[sections moved and placed at end for clarity]

    Beginning...

Eliza Madrigal: Okay, for those who didn't get a chance to read Guardians Session...
    Agatha Macbeth: Bleuji :)
    Riddle Sideways: hi bLeu
    Bleu Oleander: hi y'all :)
Eliza Madrigal: this first session is about sharing our personal impressions of the introduction pages
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Bleu :)
    Bruce Mowbray: Hi, Bleu.
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Bleu :)
    Mickorod Renard: Bleu
    Darren Islar: hi Bleu
Agatha Macbeth: Still love the hair
Eliza Madrigal: I'd like to go around the circle and begin in a casual way, with everyone sharing where they are - meaning, what have you read, what is your sense about what you've read, etc. Also whether you have familiarity with the material already
Eliza Madrigal: Does that seem okay to start?
    Agatha Macbeth: Aye
    Mickorod Renard: aye
    Wol Euler nods.
stevenaia Michinaga: pick a starting point
    Bleu Oleander: sure
    Riddle Sideways: k
    Darren Islar: sure
Eliza Madrigal: the beginning pages deal with the vision of TSK, so it would be good to know impressions of what that vision is, to each of us
Eliza Madrigal: Mick can we start with you?
    Mickorod Renard: eeek
    Mickorod Renard: ok
    Eliza Madrigal smiles
    Eliza Madrigal: ty!
    Agatha Macbeth: Hi San
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi San :)
    Darren Islar: hi San

    Mick

Mickorod Renard: well..I have read up to the chapter one these last few days
Mickorod Renard: but did read the book before
Mickorod Renard: I wouldnt like to say what the vision is as per the book cos i would get it wrong
    Mickorod Renard: but
    Darren Islar: heh :)
Mickorod Renard: it seems to me,,that by taking oneself out of the normal thought pattern,,and sort of taking time to observe brings one more space and clarity
Mickorod Renard: and reminded me alot of phenemology
    Wol Euler nods.
    Eliza Madrigal nods
    Agatha Macbeth loves phenemology
Mickorod Renard: so I sort of reflected a bit and became hungry to get on more with the book
Mickorod Renard: I will stop there if thats ok
    Eliza Madrigal: sure

    Stevenaia

    Eliza Madrigal: Stevie?
stevenaia Michinaga: I feel like somewhat a skeptic, perhaps not the only one, I see a path but not sure where it's heading. It tries to explain yet I really do not know where this will take me. Like getting in a car for road trip but forgot to ask where we are going so I will just (hopefully) enjoy the ride and lean much along the way. I thank PaB for at least warming me up with some of the terminology. I'll let you know when I think I am lost
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
    Eliza Madrigal: :))
    Eliza Madrigal: thanks
    Eliza Madrigal: Darren?

    Darren

Darren Islar: I am a buddhist within the tradition of the Gelug, which is the bigggest Tibetan school. Nyingma is the oldest and Tarthang Tulku is one of their great scholars, so I'm not totally lost in the concepts presented. I work mostly with space myself, in the most clumsy way probably :)
    Mickorod Renard: cough
Darren Islar: I'm very eager to see how those three 'things' will come together in the different exercises he gives, so looking forward to it
Darren Islar: so far it has been a really good read
    Darren Islar: done
    Eliza Madrigal: great, ty

    Kori

Eliza Madrigal: Kori, I know that you were unaware of the sessions until today, but is there anything you'd like to say?

Korel Laloix: Not really.. just read the intro right now.
Korel Laloix: I always love finding new ways to look at things though.  I have serious misgivings about Buddhism as you know, but perspective is always valuable.
Korel Laloix: So will read a bit more.

    --BELL--

Eliza Madrigal: :) yes definitely, thank you
    Eliza Madrigal: Cat?

    Cat

Catrinamonblue Resident: I read the preface and enjoyed that, the forward stumped me... maybe I'm just dense and not able to get it...... I did read a bit of the exercises and they sound interesting....... I'm just a baby with all this and have not yet found time to dedicate to trying to understand it at all. Not sure if time would help or not ;)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: done :)
Eliza Madrigal: (Cat and I were sharing a little before session, that even in his wikipedia page, Herbert V. Guenther is considered "difficult to read." :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Herbert the fifth?
Eliza Madrigal: I'll come back to me...
    Eliza Madrigal: Agatha?
Darren Islar: it is, I'm glad Tarthang Tulku is much clearer

    Agatha

Agatha Macbeth: Believe it or not I only recently realised there was a book!
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Agatha Macbeth: Which makes me wonder what I was doing during the sessions at the café
    Eliza Madrigal: lol
Agatha Macbeth: Anyway, maybe I'll pick it up as i go along
    Eliza Madrigal: ((aggers)))
    Agatha Macbeth: ((Me))
    Bleu Oleander: :)
    Eliza Madrigal giggling...
    Eliza Madrigal: Wol?
    Agatha Macbeth: Yay
    Agatha Macbeth: (Hope she's awake)
    Wol Euler: y

    Wol

Wol Euler: I'm glad somebody else said they found Herbert hard work ... quite ofputting. Tarthang Tulku was much clearer. I read most of the introductroy pages, skipped the exercises as they seemed out of place, requiring knowledge we haven't acquired yet
Wol Euler: I enjoyed the intro, was reassured by the echoes of phenomenology and PaB and discussions with Pema
Wol Euler: looking forward to the readings
    Agatha Macbeth: Ara :))
    Wol Euler: (done)
Eliza Madrigal: Hi Ara, welcome :)
    Mickorod Renard: hi Ara
    Eliza Madrigal: ty Wol!
    Darren Islar: hi Ara
    Agatha Macbeth: Bella Ara
    Riddle Sideways: hi Ara
    arabella Ella: Hiya :)

    Riddle

Riddle Sideways: first time reader, long time admirer of TSK
    Eliza Madrigal: Riddle, you're up
Riddle Sideways: bought the back-ordered book, canceled order and bought used copy, still wiating for that copy to arrive.
Riddle Sideways: bought the Kindle version and read up to chapter one
Riddle Sideways: liked that the "Vision" was a thousand pages
    Bleu Oleander: :)
Riddle Sideways: and Stev worked on it, down to 60 pages :))
Agatha Macbeth: Maybe a Tolkenian vision
Riddle Sideways: The preface is very complicated to read.
Riddle Sideways: mostly sounds like Play as Being
    Riddle Sideways: done
    stevenaia Michinaga: :)
    Eliza Madrigal nods
    Eliza Madrigal: ty
    Eliza Madrigal: Bruce?

    Bruce

Bruce Mowbray: Well, one thing I've been fascinated by for many years is the notion of "expanded mind...." No matter how "focused" I am on some specific idea or thing, I can always go to a larger vision (meta-thinking?). And.... the "vision" of this book, which I've read a few times and look forward to reading again, seems to be expanding our minds beyond the conventional understandings of "space" and "time" that we normally interpret as causal of, or competing with, or even negating to each other. When I did the exercises, a few years ago, I actually became ecstatic doing many of them.
    Agatha Macbeth: 0.0
    arabella Ella smiles
Bruce Mowbray: I would strongly encourage everyone to DO the exercises -- not just read and think about them. Enough from me for now. Really looking forward to hearing how others experience the book's vision.
    Bruce Mowbray: [done]4
    Mickorod Renard: :)
    Eliza Madrigal: ty :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Bleu?
    Bleu Oleander: kk

    Bleu

Bleu Oleander: just finished my 3rd reading ... its been raining all week here :)
    Eliza Madrigal: oh wow
    Agatha Macbeth: In Arizona?
    Darren Islar: hehe
Bleu Oleander: If I might put a couple of quotes here
Bleu Oleander: that are the vision for me

Bleu Oleander: “as a unified view of existence, this vision can perhaps make possible the lived-out experience of the full spectrum of human values — of what it means to be a human being.” “As our perception of time and space opens, we can begin to see and appreciate a new kind of knowledge, a knowledge beyond duality and dichotomies, which is all pervasive. with this knowledge we can learn to see the playfulness of all situations; we can open to the natural tendency of our energies to flow toward the exploration of the understanding and beauty - toward the deeper values of humanity”

Bleu Oleander: I didn't really engage with the book the first 2 times
Bleu Oleander: but I did this time
Bleu Oleander: and now my copy looks like its been thru a war zone lol
    Bleu Oleander: ok done
    Eliza Madrigal: haha
Eliza Madrigal: yes mine too :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Ara?
Mickorod Renard: nice Bleu...I have been pondering on what humanity is,,as an entity within ourselves
    arabella Ella: Hi
    Agatha Macbeth: WB

    Arabella

arabella Ella: i cannot really say much yet although I was here first time around some years back
arabella Ella: and i am looking forward to a second exploration
    Agatha Macbeth: You too eh
arabella Ella: as I feel it would be great for us at PaB to get back to some of our original roots
    arabella Ella: yes Aggers :)
    Agatha Macbeth: :)
    arabella Ella: done :)

    Eliza Madrigal: ty Ara
    Eliza Madrigal: San?
    Santoshima Resident: a sec
    Eliza Madrigal: sure

    San

    Santoshima Resident: well.
Santoshima Resident: have read once before
Santoshima Resident: and have had some time to reflect
    Santoshima Resident: reading again
    Santoshima Resident: is a joy
Santoshima Resident: had been studying another text by Tarthang Tulku over the past month
    Santoshima Resident: on Tibetan Yoga

    --BELL--

Santoshima Resident: and am happy to bring the two books together in a reading& practice way.
Santoshima Resident: was glad to see the list summary of exercises
Santoshima Resident: and am glad to be reading and discussing this text together with all of you.
    Santoshima Resident: ...
    Santoshima Resident: another quote:

Santoshima Resident: once our perception before and with us is sufficiently open, all experience can be seen as the dynamic play of Space, Time, and Knowledge. The inherent beauty of appearance, which is the dance of Time , Space and Knowledge, unfolds naturally we can then directly experience our being, which expresses itself as a dynamic and complete freedom. in this way we can discover what it means to be truly human."

Santoshima Resident: (sorry for the typos)
    Santoshima Resident: done
    Riddle Sideways: hi eDen
    Agatha Macbeth: Edie :)
    Mickorod Renard: Eden
    Bruce Mowbray waves to Eden.
    Bleu Oleander: hi Eden :)
Wol Euler: I'll send you a notecard with what we said, Eden
    Darren Islar: hi eden
    Eden Haiku: slips in quietly...
Eliza Madrigal: yes that's beautiful, San. Is that from the epilogue?
    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Eden :)

Mickorod Renard: I like the references to finding human or humanity....in other words what defines us from other things or what

    Eliza

Eliza Madrigal: thanks Wol, and I'll come back to you in a little while too Eden :) we've so far just been sharing initial feelings about the beginning pages, and the vision of TSK
Mickorod Renard: but that we may have become lost from seeing our humanity
Eliza Madrigal: My reading this time, at least so far, is much more grounded than before
Eliza Madrigal: and it is that part... that connecting of the vision with our humanity, that seems to shine out brightly
Eliza Madrigal: what came forward really clearly to me was a joy that comes from our direct experience
Eliza Madrigal: It isn’t about trying to reach or achieve some kind of heaven that is better than the earth, or degrading the importance of our daily concerns, but about balance…
Eliza Madrigal: a quote from me too:

Eliza Madrigal: We have limitless possibilities to find fulfillment and satisfactioin in or lives and in our relationships with one another. By learning to directly contact the essence of our being {experience},we can discover an unbounded freedom which is not only a freedom from some external restraint, but is itself the dynamic expression of the meaning and value of being human. Once this intrinsic freedom becomes a lived reality, then all other freedoms naturally follow.

Eliza Madrigal: Eden, would you like to say something about your impressions or approach? :)

    Eden

Eden Haiku: Still trying to find my copy of TSK from years ago...I will just listen for now :)
    Eliza Madrigal smiles
    Bleu Oleander: :)
    Eliza Madrigal: OK

Eliza Madrigal: So maybe we can start with any questions that arose?

    What questions arose?

Darren Islar: the humanity part actually shocked me, though I don't know why
    Eliza Madrigal: shocked? that's interesting
Bleu Oleander: a question for me became "what is knowledge?"
Riddle Sideways: Great Knowledge or little knowledge?
Eliza Madrigal: it is strange to think about the layers of knowledge... world of objects, world of measurements, and then Great Knowledge as described... seeing without seeing 'things'
Darren Islar: it's about using our abilities as a human, and I'm surprised I apparently didn't pick that up ... being human also means to be stuck to a body in time and space
Bleu Oleander: not wanting an answer, just to contemplate
Eliza Madrigal: I felt as though being fully human was being held in a more transcendent way
Darren Islar: I guess as human we have the ability to connect with that yes
Catrinamonblue Resident: I still feel very much as if all of this is way above me..... I'm just little me clunking along the road, kicking up dust
Bleu Oleander: for me, the book was about investigating our inner landscapes, that part of our humanity that is the mind
Wol Euler: oh but we all are Cat :) that's the point
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Riddle Sideways: at least you are still kicking
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Riddle Sideways: shhhhhhh bell

    --BELL--

    Catrinamonblue Resident: lol :)
Wol Euler: I was reminded of talking with Pema about TSK on a retreat, where he said that in his opinion "Knowledge" is misleading as it has a strong flavour of thought and analysis; he suggested TSA = Appreciation as in APAB
Darren Islar: it's why we're here
Bruce Mowbray has a wonderful vision of Cat . . . ecstatic in the fullness of her road and her dust.
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Mickorod Renard: its been haunting me for a while........I think its because we are sensitive people here,,but we see a harshnss in the world that seems alien,,,,i think its the inhumanity
    Riddle Sideways: yes Mick
Darren Islar: alien is a nice word
Catrinamonblue Resident: I like that Wol :) the word knowledge is a bit daunting....
arabella Ella: Wol is there more you could say about appreciation as opposed to knowledge as I too have a vague recollection of something along those lines but the memory is barely coherent
Eliza Madrigal: One of the fun parts of Guenther's writing, was describing how usual approach is either a covering of object or covering of subject, and how the vision desires to restore balance... include awareness of subject, etc. I was really thankful for having grappled with Pema's you seeing/Being seeing exercises. :)
Wol Euler: yes it occurred during that

Darren Islar: being human confines us as well ... not sure appreciation is saying the same thing as knowledge
Wol Euler: I'm full of jetlag so I may have to shelve the question to next week, sorry
arabella Ella: no worries i understand Wol :)
Mickorod Renard: no rush Wol..lovely u r here
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Agatha Macbeth: Indeed
Eliza Madrigal: appreciation does seem central, as there is nothing to grasp, yet much to appreciate.... all things accomodated
Darren Islar: that's the thing I guess, appreciation can be grasping as well, knowledge is more neutral
Mickorod Renard: that sounds good Eliza

Bruce Mowbray: I think it's important to let the book's themes work on you in sequence.... we don't really get INTO knowledge until later. . . . I mean, baby steps might be indicated.
    Wol Euler: right
Eliza Madrigal: but I like your clarifications Darren. Humanity is uniquely situated, in a sense
Wol Euler: let's assume that the structure is worthwhile and follow it
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, agrees with Wol on that.
    Darren Islar: agreed
Catrinamonblue Resident: will trust in the process :)
Bleu Oleander: will trust in Eliza to keep us in line :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :-D
    Eliza Madrigal: :))

Eliza Madrigal: Bruce would you say more about the exercises? Thinking about what San mentioned, for me one key was moving the attention from my intellect to bodily understanding... so the exercises seem key.
Riddle Sideways: glad to see 'Appearance' come early in the book/process. have wrestled with that since APAB
Bruce Mowbray: Each element of the vision - each step in the sequence - has its own quality of "enoughness..."
Mickorod Renard: i like the idea that Apreciation doesnt need to involve taking or possesing or it having value,,just appreciation is in itself reward
Bleu Oleander: mind and body are one for me
Eliza Madrigal: for some it may be much more natural. I had to wrestle a bit :)
Bruce Mowbray: The exercises surely ARE key, Eliza.
stevenaia Michinaga: is that the next step for next week? Exercise 1, hop in the car shut the doors and off we go?
    Eliza Madrigal laughs
    Bleu Oleander: hehe
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Darren Islar: I think you're pinpointing at what I mean Bleu ... the body may set us free thoughtwise, but it is confining in space
    Bruce Mowbray: !!
stevenaia Michinaga: one of those driverless vehicles
    stevenaia Michinaga: that reads

The session zipped by. When I glanced at the clock we had less than 7 minutes...

Eliza Madrigal: Oh wow... we should already discuss next week!
    Riddle Sideways: :)
Bruce Mowbray: You see, Cat, we're all clunking along with you. . . . :)
Riddle Sideways: time management kicks in
    Eliza Madrigal: https://wiki.playasbeing.org/Classes_and_Sessions/Time%2c_Space%2c_and_Knowledge/2016.01.14_-_Beginning_with_the_Presence_of_Space
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
stevenaia Michinaga: that's the Play part

Eliza Madrigal: First, please remember that we can comment on the pages I've made for these sessions
Eliza Madrigal: and that others will be participating in different ways
Eliza Madrigal: https://wiki.playasbeing.org/index.php?title=Classes_and_Sessions/Time,_Space,_and_Knowledge/2016.01.07_-_Introduction_%26_Exercises_Overview <--this is for today's session, comments until next week

Riddle Sideways: oh good that is not a session log that happenz next week and is recorded already
    stevenaia Michinaga: so organized,...thanks Eliza
    Eden Haiku: :)
Eliza Madrigal: the idea is to structure a bit like we've done for SL retreats
Eliza Madrigal: so that we can, like Great Space, include everyone ^^
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
arabella Ella: sounds great to me Eliza :)

Darren Islar: this sessions gets recorded and published?
Eliza Madrigal: And we have two weeks for the first chapter, plus being able to adjust when necessary
    Eliza Madrigal: yes Darren
Eliza Madrigal: there may also be night time study sessions
Eliza Madrigal: but we're waiting to hear from Daedalus about that
arabella Ella: night time? time zone?
Agatha Macbeth: It's night time now :p
    Eliza Madrigal: 7pm slt
    Agatha Macbeth: Zzzz
Eliza Madrigal: yes.... going by SL time :)
Eliza Madrigal: we choose from many kinds of time :)
stevenaia Michinaga: Hoping Daedalus shows up tonight for the 7:00
    Bleu Oleander: great time hehe
Agatha Macbeth: My tardis is parked nearby
    Eliza Madrigal grins
    Mickorod Renard: he he

    What Now...

Eliza Madrigal: So we should move into Chapter 1 now...
Eliza Madrigal: The Presence of Space - Openness and Solid Surfaces

Things are not only pervaded by space in an ordinary sense, they also are Great Space - infinite, open, and not excluding other things from being. Great Space does not become some thing. Nothing rises out of it. Great Space remains infinite, accomodates everything, and yet 'sets up' nothing and does nothing.

Eliza Madrigal: That's a little paragraph singled out at the end of the chapter, which has such a wonderful feeling to taste and ponder
    Wol Euler nods.
Bleu Oleander: is this for next week?
    Riddle Sideways: spoiler
Eliza Madrigal: we'll be closer to the first exercise, after next week's session

Wol Euler: we could probably spend a session just on the difference between space and things ...
Wol Euler: or the thingness of space
    Eliza Madrigal: yes Bleu
    Eden Haiku: trailer...
    Bleu Oleander: ok thanks
Eliza Madrigal: that's a very good idea
    Eliza Madrigal: hah
Riddle Sideways: space - the final frontier
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Bleu Oleander: space - the next frontier!
    Wol Euler smiles.
    Agatha Macbeth: 'Ere

    --BELL--

    Mickorod Renard: ooo i
Eden Haiku: Will seeing Star Wars, the force awakens be an homework?
Agatha Macbeth: Are you going to sing Mick?
    Mickorod Renard: no way
    Agatha Macbeth: Whew
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Bruce Mowbray: Doing Exercise 1 (actually at the beginning of Chapter 2) will help you feel Great Space . . . But maybe I'm jumping ahead.

Eliza Madrigal: btw I'll be trying to keep us on track, but there is so much wisdom in this group and so many beautiful angles, that I hope to go spaciously
Mickorod Renard: well,,that was a nice opening session Eliza,,thankyou
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, thanks so much, Eliza.
    Wol Euler: yes, thank you
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    stevenaia Michinaga: claps
Bruce Mowbray: and thanks to each and every one.
    Eden Haiku: Thanks
Bleu Oleander: thank you Eliza :)
Agatha Macbeth read 'beautiful angels' there
Riddle Sideways: liza is goood at heading cats
Eliza Madrigal: thanks Mick. I'll get the session posted soon and try to highlight questions and comments we might want to consider more
    Eliza Madrigal smiles at Aggers
Darren Islar: thanks Eliza and everyone
    Eliza Madrigal: ty <3
    Wol Euler nods.
Eliza Madrigal: @Eden too bad we can't screen the film in SL :))
    Agatha Macbeth: ♥♥
Riddle Sideways: is Wol asleep already?
    Eden Haiku: :)))
Eliza Madrigal: Wol needs to be asleep
    Agatha Macbeth pokes her
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Eliza Madrigal: quick Mick, sing a lullabye
Wol Euler: yes, I do :)
    Bruce Mowbray: G'nigt, Wol.
Wol Euler: goodnight all, it's lovely to be back
    Riddle Sideways: wb
Catrinamonblue Resident: Night Wol, sleep tight :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Night Wol
    Bleu Oleander: nite nite
Wol Euler waves and poofs away
    Bruce Mowbray: Welcome home, too!
Mickorod Renard: he he mm that would wake her up
    Eden Haiku: Night Wol :)
    Santoshima Resident: bye wol
