2016.07.19 07:00 - Suffering in Cleveland - Must Read

The Guardian for this meeting was Riddle Sideways. The comments are by Riddle Sideways(and hopefully others will comment).

The following contains political, social and humanitarian content that usually are not part of our group.  The reader is warned it contains personal opinions.  If you are offended, object to it or feel it has no place here then shame on you.
If you live in another country (help US anyway) and think your country has no racism, bigotry, inequality, caste system, etc. then comment below and name what country that is.

Riddle Sideways: thank you, Listener Master
Riddle Sideways: what shall be the topic of the day?
Riddle Sideways: Yesterday, the short single frame dreams were discussed
Riddle Sideways: yep, it was bad that nobody picked up your session recording
Riddle Sideways: you did scream all session long about none of us claiming it.

Adams Rubble: Good morning Riddle :)
    Riddle Sideways: welcome, hopper Adams
Riddle Sideways: really do like to see your jumping approach
    Adams Rubble: Happy mid July
Riddle Sideways: ah, half the year gone.
Riddle Sideways: if Jan. 1 is your starting point
Adams Rubble: half the year left to go :)
Riddle Sideways: others, start at different points
Adams Rubble: if jan 1 is your starting point :)
Riddle Sideways: is the year half gone or half to go?
Riddle Sideways: from your point of view :)
Adams Rubble: I wonder what TSK says about that
    Riddle Sideways: hmmmm, thinking
Riddle Sideways: it might say: it doesn't mater; that is up to your focus setting; neither; both

Adams Rubble: I have been thinking much about our suffering brothers and sisters in Cleveland
    Riddle Sideways: which Cleveland?

Adams Rubble: hoping they find happiness and relief from their fear the world is coming to an end
Adams Rubble: hoping they find some love in their hearts
    Riddle Sideways: yes!
                   --BELL--
Riddle Sideways: that was a very good topic for the 90-sec
    Riddle Sideways: thank you

Riddle Sideways: was joking yesterday about many who are un-friending FB people who support Trump
    Riddle Sideways: and got blasted
Riddle Sideways: "Now is not the time to divide the people ..."
    Adams Rubble nods
Riddle Sideways: need to go your way
Riddle Sideways: how to heal, unite, share
Adams Rubble: we have had a rough two weeks
Adams Rubble: I agree we need to come together

Riddle Sideways: got an email plea for just this from daughter
    Adams Rubble: wise daughter :)
Riddle Sideways: years of guiding, teaching, raising, pushing, etc.
    Riddle Sideways: has turned
Riddle Sideways: listening and being guided by her now

Riddle Sideways: Maybe? should put her email plea into this log
Riddle Sideways: what do you think?
Riddle Sideways: could edit it out, later
Adams Rubble: well in that case :)
Adams Rubble: otherwise it is your call
Riddle Sideways: will get your vote after it is read in
Adams Rubble: the young people are going to inherit the world we are leaving them

Permission given, so published here (the commentator did some formatting and highlighting)

    Dear Friends, Family, Loved Ones,
I am writing to you in a time of crisis in America and abroad, to reengage about racism and police brutality and to discuss what we can do about it together.
I know you are fundamentally against racism ideologically, and I'm asking that we come together and put those thoughts and discussions into actions.
I know many of you are well aware, doing the hard work and organizing already, so I'm asking that to combine forces and do the work together.
As white people, we have a specific and important role in dismantling racism, and this email is catered to that responsibility.

You might feel impassioned and motivated, and also not know what to do with those feelings.
I don't want our silence to be contrived from our ignorance on next steps, especially when there are a whole range of things we can do,
from working on our own embedded racisim and de-coding our language (like thinking about what we really mean when we describe an area as "sketchy" or "unsafe"),
to learning other deescalation tactics in order to call the police less, to fighting for policy changes within and outside of the current system.
We also need to be talking about this with each other and our communities, white, black, and brown.
As many of you might know, there is a call from Black Lives Matter to white folks to take mass action at police stations next Thursday, July 21 across the country.

    •  To loop into an action, search for your area's SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) Facebook group for the most up to date action information.
    • If you don't see an action already planned, organize one. Many actions are happening in small towns and rural areas, like Beacon, New York (population 3,000) and Lander, Wyoming (pop 7,500) and they're just as important as the big city events.

The action doesn't end with participating in a rally or march though.

Campaign Zero spells out ten practical and general potential solutions, on a variety of scales, with insights, brief histories and explanations of how our current situation has been growing / how we got here.
I highly recommend reading all of those thoroughly as you think about next steps politically, in policy, and in day to day interactions.
Once you've exhausted that site, here are a few other potential actions we can take right now:

If you have any questions about the current situation or what you can do, any lingering concerns about what this work might do or other opinions of what's going on that you might be afraid to express, any feelings of offense or upset around receiving this email, being called in, or struggling with any other feelings, or really anything else you want to say, please respond. Even if you don't think there is an issue that needs to be responded to right now, I would love to talk about that also. Let's have that radically honest discussion. Let's set up a phone date to talk more thoroughly if that feels best for you. But, whatever we do, let's not stay silent.
[Riddle extends that same offer to dialog: comments, group emails, personal emails, Skype, voice sessions, PaB sessions, non-recorded sessions, etc.]

To end, I'll leave you with a quote from MLK:
"Whites, it must frankly be said, are not putting a similar mass effort to reeducate themselves out of their racial ignorance. It is an aspect of their sense of superiority that the white people of America believe they have so little to learn."

Thanks for reading and caring and being bright spots in my life.

                   --BELL--

    Riddle Sideways: /done
    Adams Rubble: thank you
Adams Rubble: first you should be proud of her :)   [done]
Adams Rubble: second you should ask her if it is OK to post it here :)   [done]
Riddle Sideways: wish to find the NPR - Cleveland Mississippi segments from yesterday
Adams Rubble: third, I would like to make a mini speech :)
Riddle Sideways: ok, will ask, but sure she was broadcasting as far as possible
    Riddle Sideways: /listens

Adams Rubble: An important book not on the list is Michele Alexander's The New Jim Crow
Adams Rubble: It is very hard to read because i there are so many injustices
    Adams Rubble:

We were raised in the 60s when it appeared things had been fixed
Robert Kennedy talked about the "violence of institurions" in his speec on April 5, 1968; if you have not listened to it, I recommend it
When Nixon became president he cynically began the war on drugs to put leftist and African American leaders in jail
Reagan doubled down on this and as a result police are being paid to put African Americans in jail
the poplice are part of the problem but they too have been dragged into this
it is important we include the police in our dialogues
we are doing that in my town and it has been an eye-opener for me
there are many dedicated police officers doing their best
the others should be weeded out and in some cases proscecuted
we need to legalize drugs and put the war on drugs money into prevention and treatment
we also need to restore the rights of felons, i.e. voting , housing, food stamps etc.
that is just for starters :)
                   --BELL--
we need to open the hearts of our fellow white brothers and sisters

Adams Rubble: I guess that is what is on the tip of my tongue for now :)
Adams Rubble: sorry, sometimes I get myself rolied up
Riddle Sideways: all good stuff for just the tip of your tongue. You have been on this for some time. Don't hold back
Adams Rubble: yes, all this has gone on and we have not noticed
Riddle Sideways: in the 60's we were active, but then what???
Adams Rubble: or not realized the extent
Riddle Sideways: in the 80's we went to sleep
Riddle Sideways: look what happened while we slept

Adams Rubble: we thought we could elect Obama and he would be able to fix everything
Riddle Sideways: that starts funny, but ...
Riddle Sideways: grass roots, community, action groups
Riddle Sideways: "we can do it"
Riddle Sideways: came together to elect Obama
Riddle Sideways: Son livied in Ohio for 6 months to work on it
    Riddle Sideways: working together hard
Adams Rubble: we underestimated the will of the other party to oppose the president even when they knew their actions were against the interests of the country
Riddle Sideways: after election we went back to sleep
    Riddle Sideways: yes, true
Riddle Sideways: AND we went back to sleep
Riddle Sideways: Obama was left to do it only by himself
Adams Rubble: Thinking back, what a difference it would have made if Humphrey had been elected instead of Nixon
Riddle Sideways: our little communities backed off
Adams Rubble: we must make sure that does not happen this year
    Riddle Sideways: oh, yes

Adams Rubble: I did not mean to get on a podium this morning :)
Riddle Sideways: so, we (no, 'I" (with you)) will do this
Riddle Sideways: hopefully past the election
Riddle Sideways: and not go back to sleep again
Riddle Sideways: NO!!! get on that podium
Riddle Sideways: what good does your silence do?
Riddle Sideways: what good does "MY" silence do?

Adams Rubble: maybe we should end this morning once again sending good wishes to our brothers and sisters in Cleveland that their hearts may open and they may find the happiness they are seeking in love instead of hate
Adams Rubble: they are suffering so badly
    Riddle Sideways: Yes!
    Riddle Sideways: Prayer and action
Adams Rubble: and love to our brothers and sisters who are oppressed and suffering because of the actions of others

Riddle Sideways: mmm, hour went quickly
    Adams Rubble: yes it did
Adams Rubble bows to Riddle's daughter
    Riddle Sideways: thank you
Adams Rubble: I hope you have a very good day Riddle :)
Adams Rubble: yes the hour flew by
Adams Rubble: bye for now :)
                   --BELL--
Riddle Sideways: let's both go have our best day
    Adams Rubble: :)
    Riddle Sideways: by us All

    Of course place here!

Bewildering ... the extent of inability to hold more than one view at a time. Criticizing a rigged system, is anti-police? Yet this is the wall that gets erected very quickly.
