2013.04.02 19:00 - Stop and Engage

The Guardian for this meeting was Eos Amaterasu. The comments are by Eos Amaterasu.

    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Korel :)
Korel Laloix: Heya... smiles.. in a couple of chat and doing homework.
    Korel Laloix: How are you?
Catrinamonblue Resident: :) reading old chat logs and listening to music :)

    --BELL--

Eos Amaterasu: there's more poses with the blue zabutons
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hello Eos :)
Eos Amaterasu: Hi Cat! Hi Korel!
Eos Amaterasu: I feel like the statue of liberty :-)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Eos Amaterasu: with the PaB crown
    Korel Laloix: Heya
Eos Amaterasu: crowns and stars slowly drifting around
Eos Amaterasu: crowns and stars slowly drifting around
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)

    --BELL--

Eos Amaterasu: The first bell has no second
Eos Amaterasu: bells after that come in pairs
Eos Amaterasu: one of the mysteries of the pavilion
    Eos Amaterasu: pabilion
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Eos Amaterasu: hi Druth
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Druth
    druth Vlodovic: hey

Eos Amaterasu: day 2 of Fifth birthday celebrations
Eos Amaterasu: (or day 12 if you
Eos Amaterasu: are doing the 15 days of dropping)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Eos Amaterasu: Having a small manageable task per day that's shared in public in a community.... that's interesting
Eos Amaterasu: a 15-minute field trip per day
Catrinamonblue Resident: it has been interesting to stop and engage in this way
Eos Amaterasu: 'stop and engage' :-)
Catrinamonblue Resident: I have been looking through some older (not very old) chat logs this evening, mostly those with me (maybe a bit vain) but more to just look and see what I have been talking of and if I am still on the track I set myself
    Eos Amaterasu listens
    Eos Amaterasu: HI Pema

    --BELL--

    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Pema :)
    druth Vlodovic: hi Pema
Pema Pera: hi everybody, sorry to be later than I expected!
Catrinamonblue Resident: It's funny Eos but most of my favorite conversations have been with you :) you seem to bring out something in me that talks and explores
Pema Pera: I second that, Catrina!
Bleu Oleander: 's current display-name is "Bleu".
Eos Amaterasu: ! blushes - but happy to have that effect :-)
    Bleu Oleander: hi all :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Hi Bleu :)
    Eos Amaterasu: Hi bleu
    druth Vlodovic: hi bleu
Eos Amaterasu: so how is your track going, cat?
Catrinamonblue Resident: growing and changing every day:)
druth Vlodovic: a while back I would troll my name on the wiki, stopped when i found out you can't do anything there without being recorded =8O
    Catrinamonblue Resident: ????
Eos Amaterasu: ? I don't think searches are tracked
druth Vlodovic: storm and boxy did a thing where they started fooling with the statistics saved there
    Catrinamonblue Resident: oh :O
    Catrinamonblue Resident: ummmm
    Catrinamonblue Resident: gee
    Catrinamonblue Resident: blushes
druth Vlodovic: I'm sure they are reasonably understanding ;->
Eos Amaterasu: look into the mirror of your mind, catrina :-)
Catrinamonblue Resident: head on keyboard thinking now I've done it
Eos Amaterasu: it's interesting to read the logs and see what you missed, the different threads going on...
Catrinamonblue Resident: sigh oh well.... :) it's still fun to look back in order to look forward :)
Eos Amaterasu: yes.... so what have you found?
Catrinamonblue Resident: that I have depth I didn't know
Eos Amaterasu: :-) wow, that's wonderful!
Eos Amaterasu: that's the best kind of depth :-)
Catrinamonblue Resident: I have ability I didn't think I did, to learn,
Catrinamonblue Resident: grow change in new ways
Pema Pera: growth is always unexpected :)
Catrinamonblue Resident: find words and play with them :)
    Pema Pera: and surprising
    Catrinamonblue Resident: yes
Eos Amaterasu: hmm, yes, interplays of disappointment with the expected not showing up :-)
Eos Amaterasu: and then the unexpected
Catrinamonblue Resident: this is a special place here, not just in the learning but in the support for the learning

Eos Amaterasu: how do you get echoes of that in RL?
    Catrinamonblue Resident: patience and compassion
Catrinamonblue Resident: which have been learned here
Catrinamonblue Resident: and have helped me through a very difficult time
    Pema Pera: that's wonderful!
Pema Pera: I certainly have learned a lot here too, about interacting with many different people, some of whom I would not be likely to meet in RL -- it really has broadened my horizon
Korel Laloix: I agree with that for sure Pema
Pema Pera: including making more room for patience and compassion!
    Catrinamonblue Resident: nods :)
    Bleu Oleander: :)
Pema Pera: patience in trying to understand, and compassion in succeeding in understanding
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
druth Vlodovic: the cart before the horse it sounds like, needing compassion to achieve understanding
Pema Pera: good point, druth, it works both ways
Pema Pera: more compassion allowing more understanding, and more understanding stimulating more compassion

    --BELL--

Eos Amaterasu: there is this funny aspect that when we come here we show up for each other
Eos Amaterasu: just that means a lot
    Catrinamonblue Resident: yes
Catrinamonblue Resident: there is such support here, not only of this experiment but of our own travels in life and how we are each affected by what we learn here
Catrinamonblue Resident: peace and acceptance of who we are in the moment of being us
Catrinamonblue Resident: (rather chatty tonight sry)
Bleu Oleander: please excuse me .... rl calls .. take care all :)
    Eos Amaterasu: ciao, bleu
    Korel Laloix: Ciao
Pema Pera: happy to chat, Catrina!
Pema Pera: "chat and let chat" :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Catrinamonblue Resident: chat lag here so didn't get to say bye to Bleu :)
Pema Pera: when people leave very quickly it is hard to wave in time :-)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Eos Amaterasu: it feels like the pavilion is the center of the universe, with various stars and halos circling around
Catrinamonblue Resident: how much of the chat logs are you able to keep up with Pema?
    Pema Pera: it depends
Pema Pera: I used to read a lot more, but recently I got very busy
    Catrinamonblue Resident: nods
Pema Pera: in fact, I am just about as busy as I was five years ago
Pema Pera: when starting not only PaB but also a couple other initiatives in virtual worlds

Pema Pera: right now I'm moving to a new field of research, origins of life
    Eos Amaterasu: :-)
Pema Pera: and I feel like a graduate student again, learning many new fun things
    Catrinamonblue Resident: neat :)
    druth Vlodovic: origins of life?
Pema Pera: in interdisciplinary collaborations between astrophysicists like me, geologists, chemists, biologists, etc
Pema Pera: yes, the question how life appeared on Earth, and possibly on other planets
Pema Pera: where did the first living cell come from
Pema Pera: how was it formed through complex chemical reactions
    Eos Amaterasu: a chicken?
Pema Pera: questions like that :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
Pema Pera: the cosmic chicken laid it, yes
Eos Amaterasu: it certainly seems very exciting, from the titles of talks I once saw of a conf you were attending
Pema Pera: yes, it's the ultimate excuse for studying any field, just just about any field of research impinges on this question, directly or indirectly
Pema Pera: let's do a test: name a field of research!
    Eos Amaterasu: linguistics!
Pema Pera: oh, that's a direct connection
    Eos Amaterasu: (how cells communicate?)
Pema Pera: the first living cells must have had some form of genetic information
Pema Pera: perhaps not yet as fancy as DNA
    Pema Pera: but something digital
Pema Pera: some kind of language
Pema Pera: (lines appear out of order for me, oh well :-)
Pema Pera: and yes, also intercellular communication, but that came later
    druth Vlodovic: why digital?
Pema Pera: intracellular communication can also be analoge
Pema Pera: the way proteins interact

    --BELL--

Eos Amaterasu: proteins kind of embrace in certain positions
Pema Pera: but the basic genetic information would develop too many errors very quickly if it were purely analogue -- hence the invention of a digital coding scheme by nature, in the form of RNA and DNA and its (currently unknown) precursors, billions of years before we reinvented the "wheel" in building computers!
Eos Amaterasu: does life seem inevitable, in some sense?
Pema Pera: that's a good question!
Pema Pera: so far we've found only one form of life in one place, on this planet
Pema Pera: it would be awfully nice to find another example!
Pema Pera: even nicer to find several
Eos Amaterasu: Mars seems to have been a t least capable of hosting life
druth Vlodovic: that would suggest that life is very unlikely, since one form started and took over
    Pema Pera: not necessarily
Pema Pera: there may have been different forms, with one of them outcompeting the others
Pema Pera: and yes, Mars *may* have been more hospitable to life than Earth, and life may have arrived here from Mars
Pema Pera: and also, there *may* still be other life forms on Earth
Pema Pera: which we haven't found yet
Pema Pera: perhaps in deep down rocks
Pema Pera: miles under the surface
    Catrinamonblue Resident: nods
Eos Amaterasu: all the recent videos from space shuttle of the very thin blue film on the blue marble, the zone of life as we know it....
druth Vlodovic: we may have to redefine "life" if we do
druth Vlodovic: or fail to recognize it by definition
Pema Pera: or other unlikely places -- and our lab techniques for detecting life are designed to find life as we know it
druth Vlodovic: have you found that people from different disciplines think differently?
Pema Pera: oh yes, and they communicate differently accordingly
Pema Pera: their thinking follows their subject matter
    Eos Amaterasu: (hmmm)
Pema Pera: adapting to what is needed
Pema Pera: it's in itself a form of evolution
druth Vlodovic: sub-cultures created by the natural world
    Pema Pera: yes!
druth Vlodovic: it must make for peculiar conversations
Eos Amaterasu: and what about the kind of strange circle, that it's life looking at life?
Eos Amaterasu: (or so it thinks)
Pema Pera: yes, and consciousness looking at consciousness
Pema Pera: peculiar, yes, and sometimes heated :-)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
druth Vlodovic: "oddly enough,a lot of it looks like me!"
    Pema Pera: :-)
Pema Pera: well, I'll have to sign off . . . lunch time calling, very strictly in japan, at 12 noon sharp :)
    druth Vlodovic: eat well pema
Catrinamonblue Resident: Ty for coming it was great fun :)
    Korel Laloix: Take care...
Eos Amaterasu: there's an interesting observation that people in the space shuttle looking at the atmosphere find it to be a living, breathing thing
Pema Pera: thanks, same here, and sorry to be late --
Pema Pera: in a new research building, where wifi nor heat was working
Eos Amaterasu: thnx and bye, happy 5th, Pema!
Pema Pera: first fixed the wifi
    Pema Pera: then the heat
    Catrinamonblue Resident: :)
    Pema Pera: first things first
    druth Vlodovic: adventure :)
    Pema Pera: see you!
    Catrinamonblue Resident: Bye Pema :)

    --BELL--

Catrinamonblue Resident: Going to head off to bed now :) early morning tomorrow :)
    Catrinamonblue Resident: night guys :)
    druth Vlodovic: 'night all
    Eos Amaterasu: ~~, cat
    druth Vlodovic: sweet dreams
    Korel Laloix: Ciao
Eos Amaterasu: also dispersing, good night!
    Eos Amaterasu: exeunt omnes
    Eos Amaterasu: bye Korel
    Korel Laloix: Ciao
