[19:14] Lucinda Lavender: I have had a very busy weekend...missed my friday night session...but am glad to see you are here.
[19:14] Lucinda Lavender: Where do you connect from today?
[19:14] Calvino Rabeni: Likewise .. was hoping you would drop in!
[19:15] Calvino Rabeni: I connect from SEAWAUSA ... you know the place :)
[19:15] Lucinda Lavender: yes I do..I hail from the same!
[19:16] Lucinda Lavender: I hope we can cross paths soon then...
[19:16] Lucinda Lavender: Hi Korel!
[19:17] Calvino Rabeni: Yes.. I was thinking about Ipads and education as a topic
[19:17] Korel Laloix: Heya.. smiles
[19:17] Calvino Rabeni: Hi Korel
[19:17] Lucinda Lavender: for this evening?
[19:17] Lucinda Lavender: great!
[19:17] Korel Laloix: Good to see an orange clowd with your names above them.
[19:17] Lucinda Lavender: with clould shall appear...
[19:18] Korel Laloix: You are now just grey.
[19:18] Korel Laloix: It is a nice fashion statement for sure.
[19:18] Calvino Rabeni: TO me, Cinda is looking very white
[19:18] Lucinda Lavender: tho am wearing an orange dress in 2L
[19:19] Lucinda Lavender: for the longest time Cal appeared in white to me ...now his clothes have turned black
[19:19] Korel Laloix: brb.. crashing
[19:19] Lucinda Lavender: awww
[19:19] Lucinda Lavender: and there she went
[19:19] Lucinda Lavender: so cal...what about ipads were you pondering
[19:20] Lucinda Lavender: i use the ipad in the classroom
[19:20] Calvino Rabeni: I know you use it a lot
[19:21] Lucinda Lavender: and children learn to make letters, count, watch weather, listen to ballet
[19:21] Lucinda Lavender: and draw
[19:21] Calvino Rabeni: I was wondering about what variety of apps there are for reading, and how they would work ...
[19:21] Lucinda Lavender: for childrens reading?
[19:21] Lucinda Lavender: there is a wonderful one called Reading Raven
[19:22] Calvino Rabeni: and whether there are any that are interactive and work both ways, so they can say things and listen to the person speak
[19:22] Lucinda Lavender: ah..
[19:22] Calvino Rabeni: I know it would be developed mostly for children
[19:22] Calvino Rabeni: but I was thinking about it for adult learning of a second language
[19:23] Calvino Rabeni: and maybe also for speech or voice training
[19:23] Lucinda Lavender: well in Reading Raven....one identifies the letter, writes it and then pronounces it to a recording that plays back
[19:23] Lucinda Lavender: I know there are lots of apps that are books
[19:23] Calvino Rabeni: that sounds good .. sadly I don't have an iPad though, but maybe there are similar things in web apps for the normal computer / browser
[19:24] Lucinda Lavender: good question...
[19:24] Lucinda Lavender: I am not that familiar...with the apps for computer
[19:24] Calvino Rabeni: I found a multi-language text-to-speech translator, and was using it a little to read Thai language ..
[19:25] Calvino Rabeni: so i could type the letters and it would pronounce them
[19:25] Lucinda Lavender: that sounds helpful
[19:25] Calvino Rabeni: but there wasn't any system to it .. like a lesson plan or sequence
[19:25] Calvino Rabeni: I had it pronouncing the name of things on the google map. place names
[19:25] Lucinda Lavender: interesting!
[19:26] Lucinda Lavender: I would love to hear the sound
[19:26] Lucinda Lavender: I know a Thai nannie from my school
[19:26] Calvino Rabeni: maybe I can find it
[19:26] Lucinda Lavender: I wonder if she could give us some help
[19:27] Lucinda Lavender: I will look for the link to my list of Ipad Apps...
[19:29] Calvino Rabeni: ok
[19:31] Lucinda Lavender: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...62gCVg6FnY/pub
[19:31] Lucinda Lavender: This is the link to a list for ipad and android
[19:32] Lucinda Lavender: these are things the school has used as well as the things parents have used
[19:35] Calvino Rabeni: Here's a multi language text to speech ... a demo .. i guess this could be worked into other programs
[19:35] Calvino Rabeni: http://www.oddcast.com/home/demos/tts/tts_example.php
[19:36] Lucinda Lavender: cool!
[19:36] Lucinda Lavender: Luci clicks
[19:37] Calvino Rabeni: but when I try it.. i get a message "it is not ready yet"
[19:37] Calvino Rabeni: though actually it worked in the past
[19:37] Calvino Rabeni: I set it to language: thai
[19:37] Calvino Rabeni: and then pasted some thai text into the box
[19:38] Calvino Rabeni: วัดเบญจมบพิตรดุสิตวนารามราชวรวิหาร
[19:38] Calvino Rabeni: (that is actually thai text but shows up as boxes here)
[19:39] Lucinda Lavender: I typed happy in and then what ever country I was choosing said it like they would....
[19:39] Lucinda Lavender: but in english
[19:40] Lucinda Lavender: I just had a french man say happy:)
[19:40] Calvino Rabeni: could you try it in thai with this?
[19:40] Calvino Rabeni: วัดเบญจมบพิตรดุสิตวนารามราชวรวิหาร
[19:41] Lucinda Lavender: all I see are boxes
[19:41] Calvino Rabeni: you can copy / paste them, and I think they appear as thai script
[19:42] Lucinda Lavender: cool!
[19:42] Lucinda Lavender: you are right they did speak thai
[19:43] Lucinda Lavender: when I pasted the boxes in
[19:43] Calvino Rabeni: nods, it worked for me in chrome but not in firefox browser
[19:43] Lucinda Lavender: chrome ...using that
[19:43] Lucinda Lavender: what does it mean?
[19:44] Calvino Rabeni: วัดเบญจมบพิต
[19:44] Calvino Rabeni: there's just the name part, not the address
[19:45] Calvino Rabeni: easier for us to hear, it is shorter
[19:45] Calvino Rabeni: it's confusing because the language doesn't have spaces
[19:45] Calvino Rabeni: it'sconfusingbecausethelanguagedoesn'thavespacesbetweenthewords
[19:46] Lucinda Lavender: oh ...
[19:46] Calvino Rabeni: somethingwetakeforgrantedinreadingfromtheveryfirsttimewelearntoread
[19:46] Lucinda Lavender: :)))
[19:46] Calvino Rabeni: so วัดเบญจมบพิต says "wat benchama bophit" which is the name of a famous temple
[19:47] Lucinda Lavender: language varies...
[19:47] Calvino Rabeni: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wat_Benchamabophit
[19:47] Lucinda Lavender: interesting to learn about
[19:47] Calvino Rabeni: yes
[19:48] Lucinda Lavender: thanks for the link...s....
[19:48] Calvino Rabeni: you can type numbers in it and get them read in any language
[19:49] Calvino Rabeni: like 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
[19:49] Calvino Rabeni: to hear the numbers in thai
[19:49] Calvino Rabeni: it actually sounds pretty good
[19:50] Lucinda Lavender: but it seems like a thai person speaking english...to me
[19:50] Calvino Rabeni: language set to thai?
[19:51] Lucinda Lavender: yes
[19:51] Calvino Rabeni: sounds to me like neung song saam se HA hok jet bat gao soon
[19:51] Lucinda Lavender: well interesting...
