The Guardian for this meeting was Zen Arado. The comments are by Zen Arado.
Zen Arado: Hi Uns:)
Uns Mistwalker: Hi Zen ;)
Uns Mistwalker: no region restart today?
Zen Arado: yes but it just came back
Uns Mistwalker: ah, yes, I'm a little late.
Zen Arado: I was at Kira
Uns Mistwalker nods. I got there just as you were returning here.
Zen Arado: you don't need to be early here:)
Zen Arado: oh I watched a great Ted video yesterday
Uns Mistwalker: yes?
Zen Arado: it was posted on Facebook
Zen Arado: http://www.ted.com/talks/david_holt_...ain_music.html
Uns Mistwalker: looks interesting!
Zen Arado: the first song he plays reminded me of a song we sang as kids in Belfast
Zen Arado: 'She is charming, she is pretty, she is the belle of Belfast city
Uns Mistwalker: listening...
Zen Arado: probably derived from N.Irish settlers in USA
Zen Arado: lots of them settled in Virginia in the Appalachians
Uns Mistwalker: yes. I've heard it shows up in in syntax patterns and such there still.
Zen Arado: would be great to research
Uns Mistwalker: cool that open tuning on the banjo ... plays it with one hand.
Zen Arado: oh? didn't know they did that on banjos
Zen Arado: never had one
Uns Mistwalker: Yeah.looked to me like he was playing with one hand for a bit there.
Zen Arado: I played some of that the other week
Zen Arado: Earl Scruggs and Lester Flett
Zen Arado: old Clampetts theme
Uns Mistwalker grins.
Zen Arado: interchangeable with Irish traditional music
Uns Mistwalker: Some of that bluegrass is just.... so fast -- related to jigs and reels i guess.
Uns Mistwalker: yes.
Zen Arado: just not so much banjo
Zen Arado: mouth bow reminds me a Jew's Harp
Zen Arado: haven't seen one for years
Uns Mistwalker: yes.... very much so.
Zen Arado: only remember them from when I was a kid
Uns Mistwalker: I used to have one.... decades ago --- but this mouth bow seems to have a far richer sound.
Zen Arado: yes
Zen Arado: think I had one as well
Zen Arado: remember playing a comb?
Zen Arado: :)
Uns Mistwalker: yeup!
Zen Arado: made your lips itchy
Zen Arado: :)
Uns Mistwalker: i always wanted to learn to play the spoons.... but never did.
Zen Arado: me neither
Uns Mistwalker: couldn't figure out how to hold them.
Zen Arado: he's a good stiryteller as well
Zen Arado: story
Uns Mistwalker: yes he is.
Zen Arado: slide guitar like old blues singers
Uns Mistwalker: something about him reminds me of the The Incredible String Band.
Uns Mistwalker: yes.
Uns Mistwalker: that sort of very narrative connection to song.... without being necessarily a ballad.
Zen Arado: mmm entertaining
Zen Arado: 'Oh Lordy pick a bale of cotton' :)
Uns Mistwalker: I've been watching clips and such from these singing talent-shows that are popular now....it strikes me how here in this Ted Talk is a fellow who is a four-time grammy winner -- but would never make it on the strength of his voice.
Zen Arado: yeh
Zen Arado: I don't like those talent shows
Zen Arado: the UK versions anyway
Zen Arado: X Factor or something
Uns Mistwalker: they are very commercial..... but sometimes the performances can reduce me to tears.
Zen Arado: yeh suppose they come up with gems every now and then
Uns Mistwalker: They do... and there are often back-stories that contribute to the moment...
Zen Arado: love that 'Syeel Guitar Blues' song
Uns Mistwalker: Sometimes someone who just is completely NOT the image of 'talent'....will have such an awesome voice.
Uns Mistwalker: Yes...
Uns Mistwalker: Steel Guitar is wonderful. I love pedal-steel guitar as well.
Zen Arado: started from Hawaian guitars I think
Zen Arado: remember Slim Whitman?
Uns Mistwalker: No.
Uns Mistwalker: Hawaian guitar player?
Zen Arado: we can listen in a minute
Yakuzza Lethecus: hey you two
Zen Arado: Hi Yaku:)
Uns Mistwalker: cool. I've got a favorite too.... but not sure the pedal stell run will be in the online version....
Uns Mistwalker: hello Yaku
Yakuzza Lethecus: hey eliza
Eliza Madrigal: Hi Everyone :)
Eliza Madrigal: sorry so late... took a nap
Zen Arado: we are watching a video with a banjo player
Zen Arado: Hi Eliza :)
Eliza Madrigal: ok
Zen Arado: the one that was posted on Facebook
Zen Arado: think you saw it
Zen Arado: then we were talking about steel guitars
Zen Arado: and I remembered Slim Whitman used them a lot
Eliza Madrigal: nice
Zen Arado: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUKq_tRMpHM
Zen Arado: not sure I like this now
Zen Arado: a bit too sentimental
Zen Arado: too like Jim Reeves
Zen Arado: :)
Zen Arado: Hi Clyte:)
Yakuzza Lethecus: welcome clutemnestra
Eliza Madrigal: Hello Clyte :)
Clytemnestra Resident: Hi Zen, Uns, Yaku, Eliza#
Zen Arado: he was an American folk singer who was also very popular in Europe in the fifties
Zen Arado: 9Silm Whitman) Clyte

Zen Arado: progressive house folk
Zen Arado: :)
Zen Arado: no topic this week?
Zen Arado: we dropped it:)
Eliza Madrigal: :)
Eliza Madrigal: no topic may be part of the topic "see what happens" "no directions" :)
Zen Arado: what if nothing happens?
Clytemnestra Resident: whose turn is it to offer something?
Zen Arado: we don't like that
Eliza Madrigal: >suspense music<
Clytemnestra Resident looks around at everyone
Zen Arado: we choose a topic at guardians meetings
Zen Arado: usually
Zen Arado: but some were saying we don't need one
Zen Arado: so feel free
Eliza Madrigal: it is a little debate - is a topic helpful or does it squash spontaneity?
Clytemnestra Resident: trouble is there is such a W I D E variety of music in the world - where to beging?
Zen Arado: yep
Clytemnestra Resident: *begin
Zen Arado: my problem
Zen Arado: with everything
Zen Arado: too unfocused maybe
Clytemnestra Resident: nods
Eliza Madrigal: curiosity is a great capacity but can be a little overwhelming I guess... too large a net
Zen Arado: 'First off, the only way to be clear about what is real and what is nonsense is to wake up Here / Now. Then there is no confusion. Otherwise, we can easily get lost in analyzing, discussing and thinking about the pros and cons of different teachings and the legitimacy of different teachers. This is entertaining and distracting, and is often a favorite way in spiritual circles to stay in delusion, holding on to opinions and views, wanting certainty and the satisfaction of being right, wanting to be sure we are on the winning team and not the losing team—all keeping alive the dream-world that we think is reality. '
Zen Arado: Joan Tollifson
Eliza Madrigal: oooh... I heard a little story picture of "gaze like a lion instead of a dog"
Clytemnestra Resident: ooh I do so agree
Eliza Madrigal: I love dogs... but, dogs chase sticks wherever they go. A lion, goes for the stick thrower.
Zen Arado: :)
Zen Arado: dogs are very human
Eliza Madrigal: lol
Zen Arado: that's why they like us
Clytemnestra Resident: as mine snores under my desk!
Zen Arado: and vice versa
Clytemnestra Resident: yes!
Zen Arado: they love to play and are very sociable
Eliza Madrigal: I have to get going but it was nice to peek in... have a lovely Wednesday
Zen Arado: mine used to plonk himself down behind me
Zen Arado: byee Eliza
Clytemnestra Resident: Bye Eliza
Eliza Madrigal waves
Clytemnestra Resident: enjoy your day
Zen Arado: then there was an almight scuffle when I moved the chair back
Zen Arado: do we 'get lost in analyzing, discussing and thinking' ?
Clytemnestra Resident: hmmm
Clytemnestra Resident: more music I say, please
Zen Arado: sometimes I feel that is true
Zen Arado: :)
Zen Arado: what would you like?
Clytemnestra Resident: well I am very into Tango at that moment
Zen Arado: Slim Whitman just died this year I notice
Clytemnestra Resident: may I share a piece
