The Guardian for this meeting was Bruce Mowbray. The comments are by Bruce Mowbray.
Bruce Mowbray: Hello, Eliza and Qt.
Qt Core: Hi Bruce, Eliza
Eliza Madrigal: Hi Bruce, Qt :)
Bruce Mowbray: How's George?
Eliza Madrigal: happily sleeping on the bed, dreaming and whimpering a little
Bruce Mowbray: Awwww.
Eliza Madrigal: so precious
Bruce Mowbray: Yes.
Qt Core: (nice t-shirt, Bruce) ;-)
Bruce Mowbray: ty!
Bruce Mowbray: I had a friend once who insisted that dogs did NOT dream....
Eliza Madrigal: common argument that I just ignore hah
Eliza Madrigal: they eat and chase and talk in their sleep... must be some processing going on :)
Eliza Madrigal: images, etc
Bruce Mowbray: me too. I mean, when their legs are moving and they are uttering a mild "WOOF!" what else could it be but a dream?
Eliza Madrigal: right!
Bruce Mowbray nods.
Bruce Mowbray: My very first memory in life was of eight English Setter puppies being born-- under our kitchen table.
Eliza Madrigal: amazing
Eliza Madrigal: can understand how the memory might have stuck
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, rather amazing.
Eliza Madrigal: birth is an astounding thing
Bruce Mowbray: The largest of those pups we took with us when we moved from Ohio to Iowa.. and he died when I was a junior in high school.
Bruce Mowbray: His name was "Count"
Eliza Madrigal: ooh
Bruce Mowbray: and I still use his name in some of my on-line passwords.
Eliza Madrigal: :) might want to edit that info out later
Bruce Mowbray: He was my best friend when I was a wee laddie.
Eliza Madrigal: that, I understand
Bruce Mowbray: well, that password is mixed together with lots of other numbers... and pet names, so I doubt there's much worry there.
Eliza Madrigal: George has brought me back to a very young place... played with shepherds in the yard when growing up
Eliza Madrigal: talked to them
Bruce Mowbray: Oh my! Wonderful memory!
Eliza Madrigal: ran with them
Eliza Madrigal: around the avocado trees
Eliza Madrigal: and G does this thing where he takes off and does laps under the bed and around the furniture, haha
Eliza Madrigal: so cute
Eliza Madrigal: anyway, he is wonderful therapy
Eliza Madrigal: but I'm already panicking about 14 years from now
Eliza Madrigal: (about how long they live)
Bruce Mowbray: I'm finding photos of Bear Dog to send to you, Eliza.
Eliza Madrigal: k :)
Bruce Mowbray: Bear lived exactly 14 years, actually.
Bruce Mowbray: I got him when he was about eight weeks old.
Bruce Mowbray: I will find a photo right now and upload it...
Bruce Mowbray: just a sec...
Eliza Madrigal: great
Eliza Madrigal: that's how old George was when we brought him home too.... 8 weeks
--BELL--
Bruce Mowbray nods.
Bruce Mowbray: Here's a photo of Bear at 8 weeks.
Eliza Madrigal: wow he was really beautiful, Bruce, with the white tufty hair on his chest :))
Eliza Madrigal: fluffy
Bruce Mowbray: Yes.
Eliza Madrigal: wonderful pictures, thank you Bruce
Eliza Madrigal: you must miss him
Qt Core: Hi Zon
Eliza Madrigal: Hi Zon :)
Zon Kwan: heya
Bruce Mowbray: Hi, Zon.
Zon Kwan: new placing
Bruce Mowbray: We're telling puppy stories and showing puppy pictures, Zon.
Zon Kwan: smiles
Eliza Madrigal: This is the 4th pavilion so far :) Soon we'll have to choose
Eliza Madrigal: when I see these photos of Bear I feel a little badly for living in an apartment but, I make up for it with snuggles
Bruce Mowbray: I accidentally sent these messages to Qt... Here they are for the nearby chat:
Bruce Mowbray: [13:19] Bruce: Bear was a very happy and lucky dog. [13:19] Bruce: Never on a leash.
[13:19] Bruce: Never met a stranger.
[13:19] Bruce: Loved to meet new folks.
[13:19] Bruce: Hardly ever barked ... except when deer came on the property.
Eliza Madrigal smiles
Qt Core: (i wondered about that, Bruce ;-)
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, Bear was quite fortunate to have the run of the place, and the road, and the forest.
Bruce Mowbray nods to Qt.
Eliza Madrigal: George is like that too, instantly loving and tries to go with everyone we meet along the way
Bruce Mowbray: Good to have a dog like that.
Eliza Madrigal: he walks up to them and immediately lays on his back on their feet, haha
Bruce Mowbray: especially when folks come to the farm and I'm not here...
Qt Core: would be interesting to met him then, I'm not a dog person and most dogs feel it
Bruce Mowbray: I always knew that Bear would welcome them happily... like the propane guy, or mailman, or delivery person, meter readers, etc.
Eliza Madrigal: what puts you off, Qt?
Bruce Mowbray: Bear would love you just the same, Qt.
Qt Core: that I'm a cat person ;-)
Eliza Madrigal: :))
Bruce Mowbray: :)
Bruce Mowbray: I don't think Bear ever saw a cat... not a single one in 14 years. just rabbits, squirrels, deer, raccoons, and the like.
Eliza Madrigal: our cat hasn't warmed to the dog at all
Eliza Madrigal: pets, Zon?
Zon Kwan: not atm
Zon Kwan: but i am a dog person
Eliza Madrigal: :)
Eliza Madrigal: (aw he has hiccups now)
Bruce Mowbray: Me too, Zon. I was explaining earlier that my first memory in life was of 9 English Setter puppies, one of whom lived until I was 16.
Qt Core: i had cats, but no pet after i was 9
Eliza Madrigal: we waited a long time and thankfully son's allergies haven't been severe
--BELL--
Bruce Mowbray: Hmmmm. Allergies to dogs are rare, aren't they? I've heard that far more people have allergies to cats.
Bruce Mowbray: and horses.
Eliza Madrigal: when little, son had lots and lots of allergies
Bruce Mowbray: oh dear.
Eliza Madrigal: could hardly touch him without his skin inflaming
Qt Core: at 30 i discovered but never tested that i may have a light cat allergy
Bruce Mowbray: Hmmmm.
Eliza Madrigal nods.... lots of people have varying degrees
Eliza Madrigal: what's strange is that one would think that after 23 years of raising children, I'd be ready not to be responsible for anything...hah...
Eliza Madrigal: but he is so freeing
Bruce Mowbray: I have an allergy to fall pollens -- (ragweed). They call that "hay fever." Fortunately, that's my only allergy.
Bruce Mowbray: Are you saying that George is "freeing," Eliza?
Eliza Madrigal: yes
Bruce Mowbray nods, agrees. Pets are liberating...
Zon Kwan: they are good for health
Bruce Mowbray: I could always count on Bear being home and waiting for me - no matter how long I was away -- including two-week trips to Alaska, Scotland and Panama. Bear was always there to greet me when I returned.
Eliza Madrigal: that marvelous feeling of "OH IT IS YOU!!"
Zon Kwan: smiles
Bruce Mowbray: He was only six months old when I went to Alaska . . It took him a few seconds to remember who I was when I got back.
Eliza Madrigal: aww
Bruce Mowbray: :)
Eliza Madrigal: neighbors looked in on him then?
Bruce Mowbray: What an amazing dog to remain loyally at home waiting for his master to return.
Bruce Mowbray: Nope. He took care of himself. I just left plenty of food and water -- and shelter.
Eliza Madrigal: ah, true farm dog :)
Bruce Mowbray: yeppers.
Bruce Mowbray: Never needed medical care either -- except for his shots.
Eliza Madrigal: fresh air and exercise goes a long way
Eliza Madrigal: natural surroundings
Bruce Mowbray: Yes...
Bruce Mowbray: (good for humans, too.)
Eliza Madrigal: I definitely need more of all those things :)
Zon Kwan: city dogs need a walker so they keep you moving too
Eliza Madrigal: yes, he is forcing us to wander and meet our neighbors
Eliza Madrigal: which was always hard for my son... to reach out to people
Zon Kwan: to be free one needs to commit,,
Eliza Madrigal: to be wholehearted?
Eliza Madrigal: (another beautiful photo, Bruce!)
Bruce Mowbray: Dogs are wonderful conversation starters... I loved that in Scotland, where there are LOTS of dogs in cities.
Bruce Mowbray: ty.
Bruce Mowbray: I rode from Edinburgh to Glasgow with a dog sitting right next to me on the train... a VERY well-behaved Scotty, for sure.
Eliza Madrigal: how sweet
Bruce Mowbray: yes, a fine memory.
Eliza Madrigal: some dogs do seem to have impeccable manners
Bruce Mowbray: I wish now that I'd taken a photo of him and his master.
Eliza Madrigal: not George yet :)
Bruce Mowbray: Are any of you as excited about the Pluto mission as I am... I am very excited about it.
Zon Kwan: why?
Bruce Mowbray: Well, for one thing, I love the genuine enthusiasm and friendliness of the NASA folks.
--BELL--
Bruce Mowbray: I love their news conferences.
Qt Core: I'm mostly amazed by the precision of its flight
Eliza Madrigal: It hasn't sunken in for me yet. My mind is like that... there is a wow and then the huge-ness slowly dawns
Bruce Mowbray: and their excitement about new photos of the planet, and what they might discover... unexpected things.
Qt Core: (just put Charon as my smartphone background... mission accomplished ;-)
Eliza Madrigal: :)
Bruce Mowbray: Charon is really cool.
Zon Kwan: what is charon?
Qt Core: Pluto biggest moon
Bruce Mowbray: Charon is one of Pluto's five moons.
Bruce Mowbray: yes, the biggest one.
Qt Core: so big in respect of Pluto size that we can say that Pluto and Charon are a binary system of sort
Bleu Oleander: hi all :)
Qt Core: Hi Bleu
Zon Kwan: hi Bleu
Eliza Madrigal: Hi Bleu :)
Bruce Mowbray: If I recall correctly, three of those moons were just discovered with the New Horizon Mission, Is that right?
Eliza Madrigal: talking about Pluto
Bruce Mowbray: Heya, Bleu.
Bruce Mowbray: Pluto and other dogs... ha ha.
Eliza Madrigal giggles
Qt Core: yes, i think they were pretty scared to hit one of them too
Bruce Mowbray wonders if a planet might be named "George" or "Bear" someday.
Eliza Madrigal: probably not after my puppy if so....
Bleu Oleander: :)
Bruce Mowbray: Yes, afraid that the spacecraft might hit some debris up there in the Kuiper Belt.
Qt Core: maybe after some UK king - or better, George Takey ;-)
Eliza Madrigal: likelier :)
Bruce Mowbray: George Takai! Ha ha!
Bruce Mowbray: Star Trek.
Zon Kwan: time to go, bye all
Bruce Mowbray: Bye for now, Zon.
Eliza Madrigal: okay bye Zon, gtsy
Qt Core: Bye Zon
Bleu Oleander: bye Zon
Bruce Mowbray: Is your son still at the computer camp, Eliza?
Eliza Madrigal: picked him up yesterday
Bruce Mowbray: ahhh! Hope it went well for him.
Eliza Madrigal: thought the dog would jump out of his fur, he was so excited
Bleu Oleander: awww :)
Bruce Mowbray: For sure! It's great when dogs are reunited with their masters.
Eliza Madrigal: the camp went well, and he made a few friends, which is good because as I mentioned it is a bit hard for A to socialize
Bruce Mowbray: I understand. I'm a bit like that myself, actually.
Eliza Madrigal: I was worried when Friday night I got a text "I hate these people" hahah
Eliza Madrigal: or Tuesday night rather
Eliza Madrigal: but by Fri all was good and he learned some more advanced animation techniques
Bleu Oleander: hello mudda, hello fadda, .... lol
Bruce Mowbray: :)
Eliza Madrigal giggles Bleu
Eliza Madrigal: (dog is barking lightly in his sleep now)
Bleu Oleander: dog dreams are fun to watch
Bruce Mowbray: [woof] [woof]
Eliza Madrigal: hahah, I love it
Eliza Madrigal: I'm not very moderate am I...
Eliza Madrigal: :)
Bleu Oleander: :)
Bruce Mowbray: no need to be moderate...
Bruce Mowbray: Go for the gusto, I say!
Eliza Madrigal: brb going to make tea before guardian session
Qt Core: watching this fire and thinking about tea in these days at and above 35C...
Eliza Madrigal: nvrmind forgot I had coconut water .... shall I stop the session now, Bruce?
Bruce Mowbray: It's all yours, Eliza.
Qt Core: 35C=95F
Eliza Madrigal: :) Qt... so hot here in Miami too
Bruce Mowbray: Heya, aggers.
Eliza Madrigal: awful, humidity
Eliza Madrigal: Hi Agatha :)
