Wol Euler: in calgary, for example, there *is* public transport, technically, in that there are six bus routes (for 1 million people) each of which runs once an hour

Zen Arado: ABSTRACT This dissertation was developed from themes that are found in the first two chapters of Daniel Bell's book "Communitarianism and its Critics". I do not try to determine directly whether the communitarian criticisms of liberalism are valid, but use and develop these themes in order to establish whether a political system can most advantageously be based on minimal assumptions of personhood, community traditions, universal rules, or some combination of these. In Chapter 1, this leads to considering the concept of a person as described by John Rawls in his "original position" thought experiment. I argue that though there are difficulties with the abstract nature of this concept, as highlighted by Sandel and others, if it is used in the right way it provides a useful foundational political starting point.

Zen Arado: In Chapter 2 Walzer's pluralist distributive system is compared against that of Rawls, and his contention that shared meanings within a society provide a better foundation than abstract universal rules is considered. I argue that shared meanings are difficult to determine without the use of a concept like Rawls's original position. The idea that we need to be able to step back a little from societal problems to see solutions more clearly, and just how much "critical distance" is necessary is debated in this chapter. I conclude that Walzer's system would be impractical and inferior to that of Rawls.

Zen Arado: Chapter 3 continues the search for foundations by looking at the ideas of Richard Rorty that are derived from pragmatism, postmodernism and Saussurian linguistics. Although I find the linguistic ideas, and the pragmatic sensibleness of locating political and moral values according to consensus within a community plausible, I argue that Rorty's extension of these ideas becomes just too amorphous and contingent. A better system would be one that provides a foundation in the traditions and intuitions of a community, but also provides a way in which they can be evaluated and revised by logical argumentation, and, I conclude, the best attempt at this so far is found in Rawls's Political Liberalism.
