The Guardian for this meeting was Pema Pera. The comments are by Pema Pera.
Pema Pera: hi Pila!
Pila Mulligan: hi Pema
Pila Mulligan: how are you?
Pema Pera: oh, fine, and you?
Pila Mulligan: I'm fine thanks
Pila Mulligan: up late to watch the nuptials
Pema Pera: (^_^)
Pema Pera: I remember the previous ones quite well, about thirty years ago
Pila Mulligan: yes, big deals at the time
Pila Mulligan: then they fade :)
Pila Mulligan: any more aftershcoks in Tokyo?
Pema Pera: about one a day or so
Pema Pera: but I'm now in Kyoto, which is far quieter
Pila Mulligan: that's difficlut
Pema Pera: people get used to it, interestingly
Pila Mulligan: yes, we have two or three startling ones a year
Pema Pera: we humans can get used to many things
Pila Mulligan: I imagine daily they would get used to them
Pema Pera: how strong?
Pila Mulligan: 4 to 5
Pila Mulligan: enough to make you notice
Pema Pera: that's about what we get daily, yes
Pema Pera: the frequency is about 30 times normal
Pila Mulligan: so the normal souns like a bit more than here
Pema Pera: used to be more than 100 times normal, a month ago
Pema Pera: slowly tapering off
Pila Mulligan: earth is a vibrant place
Pema Pera: yes, Japan is about the most active part of the Pacific Ring of Fire
Pema Pera: three plates colliding
Pila Mulligan: ahh
Pila Mulligan: not just one lifting over another
Pema Pera: probably the reason for there to be such larges islands in the first place :)
Pila Mulligan: you know I am not familiar with the tectonics here ... I've just always assumed it was lava motin, but it must be more
Pila Mulligan: somethibng to google
Pema Pera: :)
Pila Mulligan: the USGS is always reporting lava expansion and contraction levels
Pila Mulligan: magma actually
Pema Pera: the reason for Earthquakes in Japan is the fact that there is a huge fish living under the islands, and occasionally it wakes up and moves a bit
Pema Pera: it is called Namazu
Pila Mulligan: :) like grandmother spider and turtle island for some native amercians
Pema Pera: and Namazu is known for redistributing wealth
Pila Mulligan: I really appreciate the personaifaction asepct, expecially Pele
Pema Pera: taking away from the rich and giving to the poor
Pila Mulligan: yes, they have mortals it seems
Pila Mulligan: morals too :)
Pila Mulligan: morals*
Pema Pera: the rich lose their buildings during an earthquake
Pila Mulligan: levelling ;)
Pema Pera: and that creates jobs for the poor, who will do the rebuilding
Pema Pera: yes
Pema Pera: may not work for nuclear power plants . . . .
Pila Mulligan: the interesting thing is that the perosnaifcation aspect is so wasy and feels natural
Pila Mulligan: nope, probably not
Pema Pera: yes
Pila Mulligan: easy*
Pila Mulligan: there is a beautiful remote beach south of here, south of the volcano
Pila Mulligan: a develpoer was going to develop a large resoirt there
Pila Mulligan: it would have ruined the polace
--BELL--
Pila Mulligan: two years ago Kiauea opened a second vent
Pila Mulligan: it started flodoing the area with vog
Pila Mulligan: the developer said we're out of here
Pila Mulligan: the vog sotpped
Pema Pera: the mountain used tear gas? how modern!
Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: it worked :)
Pema Pera: are you still working on your property?
Pema Pera: or are you happy with your builts as is?
Pila Mulligan: I asked a Hawaiian freind a few years ago if he wanted help opopsing the devleopment, and he said don't woory it wont happen
Pila Mulligan: yes, the work continues, slowly
Pila Mulligan: I am happy wiht it
Pema Pera: only gardening to do?
Pila Mulligan: well, and a kitchen
Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: the kitche cabinets are still bookshelves
Pila Mulligan: green house is in the plan
Pema Pera: oh, how nice!
Pema Pera: what will you grow?
Pila Mulligan: salad stuff ... bug proofing them
Pema Pera: (and I thought Hawaii was green enough already without green house)
Pema Pera: ah!
Pila Mulligan: it is very green
Pila Mulligan: year round bugs too :)
Pema Pera: ah, so green houses are reverse prisons then
Pila Mulligan: yes
Pila Mulligan: only problem seems ot be plination
Pila Mulligan: pollination
Pila Mulligan: no bees get in
Pila Mulligan: realizng the bug problem I shifted to planting fruit tree a year ago
Pila Mulligan: they are estbalished now so back to the salads
Pema Pera: any plans for beans and such?
Pila Mulligan: yes, that will be later -- corn and soybeans
Pila Mulligan: it is more like famrinig
Pila Mulligan: larger scale
Pila Mulligan: have you had breadfruit?
Pema Pera: I'm not sure
Pema Pera: what does it look like?
Pila Mulligan: it is a tree fruit, looks like a big potato or something rounded, tastes a little like eggplant
Pila Mulligan: delcious
Pema Pera: sounds good!
Pila Mulligan: and taro and sweet potatoes
Pila Mulligan: those were hawaiin staples
Pema Pera: oh, great!
Pila Mulligan: yummy
Pema Pera: will you grow those?
Pila Mulligan: yes
Pema Pera: is that hard?
Pila Mulligan: not at all
Pila Mulligan: they are more bug proof
Pila Mulligan: taro makes nice veggiue burgers
Pila Mulligan: how was Assisi?
Pema Pera: a great experience, in many ways
Pema Pera: talking about food:
Pila Mulligan: :)
Pema Pera: it was by far the best cuisine of any RL PaB retreat so far
Pila Mulligan: it s northern?
Pema Pera: a lovely location too
Pila Mulligan: is it*
Pema Pera: it's North of Rome, South of Florence
Pema Pera: Perugia
Pila Mulligan: did you visit Franciscan laces?
Pila Mulligan: places*
Pema Pera: yes
Pema Pera: it was my third visit
Pema Pera: so I was quite familiar with the area
Pila Mulligan: nice
Pema Pera: even with all the many tourists, it is still a wonderful place
Pema Pera: with a very special atmosphere
Pila Mulligan: I bet the oldness helps
Pema Pera: funny thing is that in the main church there is a loudspeaker saying "silence" in Italian about once every minute
Pila Mulligan: haha
Pila Mulligan: that is funny
Pema Pera: but like a scare crow, the birds get used to it
Pema Pera: and just lower their voice slightly, periodically
Pema Pera: Italians can't imagine being together without talking
Pema Pera: they're rather stop breathing
Pila Mulligan: :)
Pila Mulligan: pizzas?
Pila Mulligan: for food
Pema Pera: not us
Pema Pera: wonderful farm vegetables
Pila Mulligan: oh, better
Pema Pera: vegetarian deligths
Pema Pera: much much better!
Pila Mulligan: Italians certainly can cook
Pema Pera: yes!
Pema Pera: each evening the cheerful woman in the kitchen had a long conversation with us about all the many dishes she wanted to cook for us the next day
Pema Pera: it was like following a cooking class
Pila Mulligan: :)
Pema Pera: but without having to do the cooking :-)
Pila Mulligan: I would have been takingnotes
Pila Mulligan: I recently got a pzza baking stone
Pila Mulligan: it has a nice effect
Pema Pera: do you heat the stone?
Pila Mulligan: yes, it sits in the oven to preheat
Pila Mulligan: highets temperature
Pila Mulligan: the pizza only take a few muntes thne
Pema Pera: a thin one, then
--BELL--
Pila Mulligan: yes, I prefer them, but it seems to wokr for any style
Pila Mulligan: thin pizzas I prefe, the stone is about 3/4" thick
Pema Pera: well, I'll have to get going
Pila Mulligan: nice to see you Pema
Pema Pera: good seeing you here!
Pema Pera: are you still watching the nuptials?
Pema Pera: are haven't they started yet?
Pila Mulligan: yes, on You Tube, live
Pila Mulligan: 30 minutes
