The Guardian for this meeting was sophia Placebo. The comments are by sophia Placebo.
*I arrived on a witch broom , Wol was sitting there quietly but who can resist a witch broom .Others follow and we had a 15 mints of smiles
Pema Pera: how do I get one?
--------
*Cigars and urge to get another one- me, Wol and Pema were smoking virtually
Fefonz Quan: i thought cigars are Mick's thing
Mickorod Renard: he he he
sophia Placebo: hehe
sophia Placebo: i liked the animation fef
Mickorod Renard: I do have an issue with cigars
Fefonz Quan: the witch one?
sophia Placebo: this one
Fefonz Quan: yes, it is cool :)
sophia Placebo: :)
Mickorod Renard: I have 19 days supply left..then I either have to quit or go travelling to get some
Pema Pera: :)
Wol Euler: oooh
Pema Pera: or both
Pema Pera: in sequence
Wol Euler: what a dilemma
Mickorod Renard: I know,,the tres is building up
Mickorod Renard: stress
Pema Pera: "it's easy to quite smoking, I've done it many times"
Mickorod Renard: he he
sophia Placebo: dont let it build up
Fefonz Quan: maybe you can dream of smoking, thus relieving the stress without consuming the supplies...
Mickorod Renard: yes,,I do it every morning
sophia Placebo: hehe pema
stevenaia Michinaga: jsut like Sl, I can quit anytime
----------
*Dreams and -urge- to correct them
Mickorod Renard: talking of dreams,,I had one last night,,and my dog died
Pema Pera: in your dream, I hope?
Fefonz Quan: in the dream i hope?
Pema Pera: hehehe
Pema Pera: fellow Princetonians
Fefonz Quan: :)
Mickorod Renard: yes,,not my real dog,,this one was called woofy
Pema Pera: and fellow physicists
Wol Euler: good.
Mickorod Renard: it feels so bad I want to go back to the dream to retrieve his body
Fefonz Quan: but you should be happy RL is bettere
Mickorod Renard: true
Fefonz Quan: retrieveing won't get back his poor virtual soul
Wol Euler nods. It might comfort yours, though.
Wol Euler: if only dreaming worked like that...
Fefonz Quan: your virtual one? :)
-----
*Arabella arrives ,Adams leaves
Adams Rubble: hello Arabella
Wol Euler: hello ara
Fefonz Quan: Hey Ara
Mickorod Renard: Hiya Ara
sophia Placebo: hi ara
Pema Pera: Hi Arabella!
arabella Ella: Hiya everyone
arabella Ella: Hiya Pema!
Adams Rubble: I must go. bye everyone :)
sophia Placebo: bye adams
Wol Euler: bye adams, take care.
Pema Pera: bye Adams!
Fefonz Quan: have a good weekend adams
Mickorod Renard: bye aDAMS
arabella Ella: bye Adams I hope i did not scare u off :)
----------
*What makes the Homeness?
Mickorod Renard: are you back home now Pema?
Pema Pera: yes, for a few days
Pema Pera: Sunday I'll fly to Kyoto
Mickorod Renard: nice
Fefonz Quan: 'every place i lay my laptop, that's my home', pom pom pom...
Wol Euler: heheheh
Pema Pera: with a laptop comes SL, as a home!
sophia Placebo: hi wni
sophia Placebo: win*
Pema Pera: Hi Winston
Fefonz Quan: exactly
Wol Euler: I wonder, what makes the "home"-ness of home, when you spend every other week in a different place?
Wol Euler: hello winston
Mickorod Renard: Hi Winston
Fefonz Quan: the homeness feeling i guess
Wol Euler: two days old, welcome to second life
Pema Pera: well, T shirts, mostly, Wol . . . home is where I keep most of my T shirts
Wol Euler: heheheheheh
Wol Euler: as good an answer as any other.
Pema Pera: I do happen to have hundreds of T shirts, about the only thing I tend to collect :-)
Fefonz Quan: better then Giraffes though
arabella Ella: i reckon if we all put our t-shirts together we would run into thousands
Pema Pera: :-)
Pema Pera: now there's an idea!
Pema Pera: we'll have to compare our sizes though
Pema Pera: the great PaB T shirt swap
arabella Ella: one size fits all :)
Wol Euler: heheheh
Pema Pera: talking about stretching the truth . . .
arabella Ella smiles
Wol Euler: winston, I'll give you an intro to the group in IM, so as not to disturb the others
Pema Pera: the one and the many . . . . (truth and T shirts) . . . theme for tomorrow morning
--------------
* The_Road_Not_Taken_(poem)
Fefonz Quan: yes, two roads diverge in a T-junction
Wol Euler: and I, I took the one with fewer service stations
Fefonz Quan: and got stuck out of fue?
sophia Placebo: why?
Fefonz Quan: fule
Wol Euler: probably, the poet didn't say :)
Wol Euler: I thought Fef was quoting a famous poem by Robert Frost, so I continued it.
Fefonz Quan: the poet fuel on heart and emotions, as ecological as any other way
Fefonz Quan: yep :)
Fefonz Quan: poets*
Wol Euler: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Roa...t_Taken_(poem)
Wol Euler: right, fef :)
Wol Euler: it's funny (one last reference then I'll shut up)
Wol Euler: I have knowna nd loved that poem most of my life, and until
recently I always thought that it was sad. The poet chose the wrong
path and was regretting that.
Wol Euler: recently I realized that it might just as well be positive: he chose the RIGHT path, and is happy with his lot.
Fefonz Quan: no, he chose the original one
Fefonz Quan: i thought that way too, though it can encompass both joy and pain
Wol Euler nods
sophia Placebo still thinks about what service stations means there
Fefonz Quan thought about gas statins, maybe from lack of understanding too
Wol Euler: well, the service stations along the road parallel the
leaves on one path and worn-down grass onthe other in the poem.
Wol Euler: making a difference between the two roads leaving the T junction.
Wol Euler: and yes, "service station" was equivalent to "gas station" during my childhood :)
arabella Ella: and we say ... petrol station
Wol Euler shrugs. It was a silly attempt at a literary joke, sorry.
arabella Ella liked it
sophia Placebo: i mean would you choose a raod that you walk without
help there , like deciding not to go to school and learning by your own
arabella Ella: Wol's version i mean
Winston Haystack: Bye
sophia Placebo: bye win
Pema Pera: Bye Winston
Wol Euler: bye winston
Fefonz Quan: bye winston
Mickorod Renard: bye Win
Fefonz Quan: there are not few taking that choice these days Sophia
arabella Ella: i have always taken that poem to mean choosing one's future which is not the usual way ... or the usual path
sophia Placebo: indeed must be very brave or very crazy
arabella Ella: less stereotyped
arabella Ella: should we all be like sheep and follow the crowd everywhere regardless?
Fefonz Quan: i think someone here had some chat around it, claming this is better for her children. don't recall who
Wol Euler: yes, that's interseting, I too thought he chose the "odd" path, the unusual one
Mickorod Renard: could refer to all the coices u make in life,,on a personal basis
arabella Ella: exactly - same opinion here wol
Fefonz Quan: (to sophia that was)
Wol Euler: yeah, fef, someone is doing home schooling. Was that Myna?
Fefonz Quan: mybe :)
sophia Placebo: that is her deciding fef , her would provide help if her chldren need it
Fefonz Quan: yes. btw - i think all of us here are traveling the off-broadway road, only by being here and discussing PaB
sophia Placebo: im wondering about the poet reaching a point in his
life where he decided to go without much support or help , a path with
uncertain level , was wandering about the moments we do that , what
drives us to do that
Fefonz Quan: interesting, i never thought about the support/help issue regarding that choice/poem
Mickorod Renard: what drives us is often disenchantment with what path we followed to date
arabella Ella: or a sense of adventure ... or individuality
arabella Ella: like riding a bicycle in the countryside where one has never ventured before
arabella Ella: and choosing what seems to be the more untrodden or adventourous path
arabella Ella: as a challenge
arabella Ella: or to be different
arabella Ella: or as a point of exploration
arabella Ella: i did this recently in germany where i hired a bicycle
Fefonz Quan votes for all of the above
Mickorod Renard: a change is as good as a rest,,so some say
arabella Ella: :)
sophia Placebo: maybe
Fefonz Quan: plus, sometimes you feel that the fact the majority thinks differently doesn't make tehm right.
Fefonz Quan: them*
arabella Ella: it is similar to media influence ... people watch TV programs cos 'everyone' watches them
Fefonz Quan: otherwise the average human around would be smiling and happy, wouldn't they?
arabella Ella: people wear brand clothes cos 'everyone' wears them ... or fashion
Fefonz Quan: and than after 2 years fashion changes, in order to make people spend more money. that's exactly the point
Fefonz Quan: then*
Mickorod Renard: there is some conditioning that makes me uncertain
that the break from norm is right,,but still i choose the non
conformist route
Pema Pera: there are also many ways of being nonconformist . . . .
sophia Placebo: fef it is much shorter than 2 years
arabella Ella: well on the one hand we are all urged to be creative and innovative and to come up with new ideas
Pema Pera: most of us are conforming in some ways, not conforming in others
Fefonz Quan: yes, i was conservative sophia :)
arabella Ella: on the other hand we are pressured to conform
Wol Euler: there are also standards of non-conformity to which people conform :)
Pema Pera: hehehe
arabella Ella nods to Wol
Mickorod Renard: I guess the masses are better controlled if they conform
Fefonz Quan: Mick, i didn't say comformity is bad for itself, being
conditioned by it - hence not free to choose - is wrong for my opinion
arabella Ella: well some conformity is probably necessary
arabella Ella: like rules for driving or eating or whatever
Mickorod Renard: yes,,I like the idea that choice should be choice,,not just an expectation
arabella Ella: but we must always question
arabella Ella: not follow blindfolded
Fefonz Quan: yes, driving more important than eating, no one will get hurt if i chew on the left side of mymouth
arabella Ella: yes Fef but eating also involves hygene for example
Mickorod Renard: yea,,there is always the issue that sometimes conformity has to be for the well being of ones feelows
Fefonz Quan: right.
Pema Pera quietly slips away . . . see you tomorrow morning, if not earlier!
Fefonz Quan: bye Pema
sophia Placebo: bye pema
arabella Ella: bye Pema
Wol Euler: bye pema, take care
Mickorod Renard: bye Pema
Yakuzza Lethecus: bye
Fefonz Quan: yes Mick, like the vaccination issue
stevenaia Michinaga: I must be off
arabella Ella: or controlling disease
stevenaia Michinaga: thanks
arabella Ella: bye steve
sophia Placebo: bye steve
Fefonz Quan: bye Steve
Wol Euler: bye steve, take care.
Yakuzza Lethecus: cya
Mickorod Renard: bye Sreve
Fefonz Quan: nice exit :)
arabella Ella: cool
------------
*SL is not RL ?
arabella Ella: i know it is late but a question crosses my mind
Mickorod Renard: watz that ara?
sophia Placebo: :)
Fefonz Quan: share teh cross :)
arabella Ella: would we all be so open and relaxed with our discussions if we were to meet in RL like this i wonder?
sophia Placebo: me no
arabella Ella: open, honest, relaxed
Fefonz Quan: why not?
Mickorod Renard: I wud,,I am like this all day
arabella Ella: i am not so sure myself either
sophia Placebo: i dont like poeple
Wol Euler: I'm not sure, I suspect that I would be more cautious and quiet.
Mickorod Renard: I tell my dog everything
sophia Placebo: hehe mick
Fefonz Quan: guess we found another question that has different individual answers :)
arabella Ella nods
arabella Ella: i feel that the fact that we are all here without
reputation or baggage or status or what makes a huge difference to our
conversations and discussions
Mickorod Renard: course,,I cant tell my wife anything,,but thats normal
sophia Placebo: though i do good in lectures or presentation but not in friendly chating
Fefonz Quan: i can say that in some RL groups i experienced quite open and relaxed atmosphere too.
arabella Ella: but Fef ... and I dont think there is anyone here from
the USA right now ... did u feel that way in the USA ... or is it too
complicated to ask? in RL I mean? cos i think most of us would feel ok
with a group we trust, perhaps family, perhaps friends
sophia Placebo: me too fef , depends on the group , not sure what it takes to feel like open to them though
Fefonz Quan: in RL was not USA, ara :)
arabella Ella smiles
Fefonz Quan: but no, no family or friend (at least at the starting point)
arabella Ella: ok
arabella Ella: so for those of us who feel it would be different in RL ... to communicate like this like we do here
arabella Ella: Sophia, Wol and myself for starters
arabella Ella: why is it so different u think?
Fefonz Quan: surely when the group gets to know each other, a bit like we do here, they are not totally strangers
Wol Euler: RL is messy, it has dangers and awkwardnesses that don't exist here.
Mickorod Renard: thats true Wol
Fefonz Quan: i guess SL does provide a 'clean slate' easily (if this is the right term)
sophia Placebo: it is just easier for me even with friends and family to comunicate through typing ara , it is something in me
Yakuzza Lethecus: I don´t know why, when the groups are ging to be
bigger then i am basicly quite the whole time and often i pressurise
mself to say something just to say something and so it´s going to be
unpleasant in real life often.
Wol Euler nods. I prefer e-mail to phone...
arabella Ella: very interesting ... and diverse ... responses
Fefonz Quan: I will have to leave, RL calls. good to see you all!
Yakuzza Lethecus: I prefer talking because i think over the words too much when i type
Wol Euler: 'night fef.
arabella Ella: and me ... since i live on a little island where
everyone knows everyone ... cannot always be as open as i would like to
be here
sophia Placebo: bye fef
Yakuzza Lethecus: and in the end i delete the email or what i was going to type
arabella Ella: bye Fef good to cya
Yakuzza Lethecus: bye fef
Fefonz Quan: _/!\_
sophia Placebo: thanks for the poem
Mickorod Renard: I felt like that too Yaku..but after a while of being
on sl,,in group chats,,i have become more confident in rl too
Wol Euler: yes, that was k´nice
Mickorod Renard: bye Fef
arabella Ella: yes Yak that is an interesting issue too ... each of us
probably feels better communicating one way rather than another ...
chat, voice, phone, presentations, wahtever
arabella Ella: i personally find each one of those a skill that is a challenge and needs to be developed over time
Mickorod Renard: SL has been good for me,,in my communicating in RL
sophia Placebo: true ara i hope i became a better chatter in rl
arabella Ella: would you say there is a HUGE leap between us being here
as avatars ... and our RL 'image' or appearance ... when communicating
I mean
Mickorod Renard: I think I had become too insular
-----------

arabella Ella: sophia ... if you find presentations easy ... you could go make one for me next week

arabella Ella: this is more ... femme fatale
arabella Ella: u know what that means?
sophia Placebo: no what ?
arabella Ella: difficult to explain but
arabella Ella: a bit like a witch yet sophisticated as smoking with cigarette holder :)
arabella Ella: femme fatale means fatal female
sophia Placebo: lol
