"On ice" = in reserve or readiness (idiom). In other words, we were prepared to have a session, but instead we talked briefly about cold stuff, real and virtual, before going our separate ways.

Storm Nordwind: The ice on the pond was there all the time. I couldn't see it as it had become invisible for a while. There must be a life-lesson in the somewhere!
