[18:54] Paradise Tennant: sorry was just making tea
[18:54] Paradise Tennant: how are you tonight :)
[18:55] Rasima Petrovic: that sfine
[18:55] Rasima Petrovic: I'm doing fine =) you?
[18:55] Paradise Tennant: very well too thanks .. have a few days off in a row - really enjoying it
[18:56] Rasima Petrovic: thats great =) I have winter break atm
[18:57] Rasima Petrovic: i like your kimono =)
[18:57] Paradise Tennant: thank you very much I like the colours -
[18:57] Rasima Petrovic: me too
[18:57] Rasima Petrovic: its eloquent =)
[18:57] Paradise Tennant: love how vivid they are in sl :)
[18:57] Rasima Petrovic: =))
[18:58] Paradise Tennant: what are you studying ?
[19:04] Rasima Petrovic: I crashed >.<
[19:04] Rasima Petrovic: what was the question?
[19:05] Paradise Tennant: just wondered what the program was your were taking a winter break from .. but we can talk about anything you would like to talk about
[19:05] Rasima Petrovic: oh
[19:05] Rasima Petrovic: grad studies in linguistics
[19:05] Rasima Petrovic: =)
[19:05] Paradise Tennant: nice ... what languages ?
[19:06] Paradise Tennant: very good for your brain being able to speak a variety of languages :))
[19:06] Rasima Petrovic: well studying lingustics doesn't necessarily mean you're learning other languages (I am but still ^^))
[19:06] Paradise Tennant: smiles and listens
[19:07] Rasima Petrovic: i know english, french, german, different french dialects from all over the Americas and Europe
[19:07] Rasima Petrovic: Hello Riddle =)
[19:07] Paradise Tennant: hiya riddle :))
[19:07] Riddle Sideways: Hi ya
[19:08] Rasima Petrovic: linguistics has a lot of different subfields... semiotics, historical/cultural linguistics, morphology and phonology
[19:08] Riddle Sideways: Hi San
[19:08] Rasima Petrovic: Hello san =)
[19:08] Paradise Tennant: hmm morphology and phonology ?
[19:08] Santoshima Resident: reetings
[19:08] Paradise Tennant: hiya san :))
[19:08] Santoshima Resident: g
[19:08] Rasima Petrovic: Morphology studies word and grammatical components
[19:08] Rasima Petrovic: Phonology is the study of how you actually physically communicate
[19:09] Rasima Petrovic: like, vocal patterns, sounds the mouth makes
[19:09] Rasima Petrovic: semiotics is basically about grammar
[19:09] Paradise Tennant: funny how we all have the same mouth but different regions use it so differently
[19:09] Rasima Petrovic: yep ^^
[19:10] Rasima Petrovic: well there actually are differnces between the mouths and vocal chords in different races
[19:10] Rasima Petrovic: but otherwise, anyone can learn any language =)
[19:10] Rasima Petrovic: which is amazing
[19:10] Paradise Tennant: yes
[19:10] Riddle Sideways: yes
[19:11] Rasima Petrovic: i took a speech lab this semester
[19:11] Rasima Petrovic: we had to just learn how to pronounce a wide variety of sounds
[19:11] Rasima Petrovic: even if its not in our language class
[19:11] Rasima Petrovic: so we had to learn how to do sharp glottal stops (chinese, arabic)
[19:12] Rasima Petrovic: clicks in bantu langauges
[19:12] Rasima Petrovic: different stuff, it was interesting
[19:13] Paradise Tennant: I guess with just listening and practice it is all possible :)
[19:13] Paradise Tennant: I bet
[19:13] Rasima Petrovic: yes
[19:13] Rasima Petrovic: thats the thing too
[19:13] Rasima Petrovic: there's a relationship between the sounds you pronounce and the sounds you can hear
[19:13] Rasima Petrovic: if you now how to pronounce it, you're able to know how to listen for it
[19:13] Rasima Petrovic: and it kinda rewires the brain
[19:13] Paradise Tennant: smiles
[19:13] Rasima Petrovic: like for eg
[19:14] Rasima Petrovic: in english
[19:14] Paradise Tennant: to be more aware
[19:14] Rasima Petrovic: we don't make a diference between k and q
[19:14] Santoshima Resident: same re-wiring with kind words
[19:14] Rasima Petrovic: in arabic, there's a huge difference between k and q
[19:14] Rasima Petrovic: q is pronounced more at th back of the mouth, k is pronounced omre at the front. it seems subtle in english, but it makes a huge difference in middle-eastern languages
[19:15] Rasima Petrovic: or like how chinese languages have 5 tones
[19:15] Rasima Petrovic: you really need to learn ohw to pronouce the tones in order to get them
[19:15] Rasima Petrovic: and listen fo them
[19:16] Paradise Tennant: find a lot of the real meaning in the communication is the tone ..conveys intent emotion
[19:16] Paradise Tennant: sorry bell
[19:17] Rasima Petrovic: yes
[19:17] Rasima Petrovic: well i mean with chinese
[19:17] Rasima Petrovic: in english there's tone that means one thing
[19:17] Rasima Petrovic: in chinese, tone means just the pitch
[19:17] Riddle Sideways: and the practice of not spitting on other people during some sounds
[19:17] Rasima Petrovic: and the pitch directly bears on the meaning of what you're saying
[19:18] Rasima Petrovic: yes theres a lot about tone and emotion too
[19:18] Rasima Petrovic: and other contextual things
[19:19] Paradise Tennant: yes spitting is not good :)
[19:19] Riddle Sideways: the rising tone at the end of a sentence to mean a question
[19:19] Rasima Petrovic: lol =)
[19:19] Rasima Petrovic: yes
[19:19] Rasima Petrovic: theres languges where you dont do that btw
[19:19] Rasima Petrovic: chinese is one
[19:20] Rasima Petrovic: old english apparently didn't inflect either, you'd just have to rearrange the words
[19:20] Paradise Tennant: lol i remember in berlin asking a one word question and getting in a lively debate with a complete stranger on whether or not that one word was indeed a complete sentence .. I think if it is complete thought it is :) such as why ?
[19:20] Riddle Sideways: no questions?
[19:20] Rasima Petrovic: well in german, you don't just ask "why"
[19:21] Rasima Petrovic: in english thats okay
[19:21] Rasima Petrovic: in german its usually always in reference to something
[19:21] Paradise Tennant: and in french ?
[19:21] Rasima Petrovic: "warum ist es?"
[19:21] Rasima Petrovic: lol well french, yeah, you can just be "pourquoi?" and it's llegit
[19:21] Paradise Tennant: but language is kind of plastic
[19:22] Paradise Tennant: it is kind of a living thing
[19:22] Rasima Petrovic: it is
[19:22] Paradise Tennant: changeable
[19:22] Paradise Tennant: evolving
[19:22] Rasima Petrovic: the thing is
[19:22] Rasima Petrovic: germans dont want their language to turn into french / english
[19:22] Rasima Petrovic: thats why they're such sticklers about grammar rules
[19:22] Paradise Tennant: always think both the spoken word and the written word should have cadence it should be pleasing to the ear like music
[19:22] Rasima Petrovic: thats also why there's always a complex german equivalent to like every word xD
[19:23] Rasima Petrovic: like, they dont call it "science" in german
[19:23] Rasima Petrovic: they use a german word, "wissenschaft"
[19:23] Rasima Petrovic: but most other european languages use the word "science" or something derrived from the latin origins of our "science"
[19:24] Rasima Petrovic: hey lucinda ^^
[19:24] Riddle Sideways: Hi luci, trying to walk
[19:24] Santoshima Resident: greetings Luci
[19:24] Paradise Tennant: hiya luci :))

[19:29] Paradise Tennant: be thankful ?
[19:29] Lucinda Lavender: surely..
[19:29] Riddle Sideways: we were chatting about being about to make the sounds of other languages and now thinking of chickens
[19:29] Riddle Sideways: yes, thank full
[19:29] Rasima Petrovic: lol
[19:29] Rasima Petrovic: well you started thinking of chickens^
[19:30] Rasima Petrovic: =)
[19:30] Paradise Tennant: chickens ?
[19:31] Riddle Sideways: Lucinda's chickens always remind
[19:32] Santoshima Resident: pullet surprise
[19:32] Lucinda Lavender: yes...they are out there in the coop ...all 7 of them:)

[19:33] Paradise Tennant: yes nice to hear more about it
[19:33] Lucinda Lavender: bye Rasima
[19:34] Paradise Tennant: I had a dream luci
[19:34] Lucinda Lavender: curious what was said about linguistics
[19:34] Riddle Sideways: hard to think about how much we are influenced by the communication methods we use
[19:34] Lucinda Lavender: ah...and a dream?
[19:34] Riddle Sideways: /listens
[19:34] Lucinda Lavender: listens too
[19:34] Paradise Tennant: yes words really don't really do that great a job sometimes .. there are so many layers of connections it is hard to make them fresh
[19:35] Paradise Tennant: okies my dream
[19:35] Paradise Tennant: I have some big pieces of furniture in my apt which are really old ...
[19:35] Paradise Tennant: some have been in the family a long time ..
[19:36] Paradise Tennant: and I keep thinking I should either sell them or donate them somewhere
[19:36] Paradise Tennant: in my dream I had given them to a dealer to sell
[19:36] Paradise Tennant: and I was walking around his store looking at them there
[19:36] Paradise Tennant: and they started to talk to me
[19:36] Paradise Tennant: in pictures
[19:36] Paradise Tennant: of times gone by
[19:37] Paradise Tennant: old trunks being packed with 17th century dresses .. the conversations around the packing
[19:37] Paradise Tennant: just snippets of time ..
[19:38] Paradise Tennant: very strange all very trivial but vivid
[19:38] Paradise Tennant: made me feel very transitory ..
[19:38] Paradise Tennant: temporary
[19:39] Paradise Tennant: just one of a long line of faces or hands that have touched them polished them ..
[19:40] Paradise Tennant: smiles
[19:40] Paradise Tennant: that was it not much but strange
[19:40] Riddle Sideways: smiles
[19:40] Lucinda Lavender: I was just reading about dreaming...and how it takes what was from the past and does new things with it...
