The Guardian for this meeting was Eliza Madrigal. The comments are by Eliza Madrigal. Today I was joined by Yakuzza and we talked about one of our favorite subjects: learning. Along the way we also talked about the focus of sessions at PaB, and the relief of posting chat logs right away.

    Eliza Madrigal: Hi Yakuzza :)
    Yakuzza Lethecus: good morning eliza
    Eliza Madrigal: All well?
Yakuzza Lethecus: sure, same at your side of the ocian ?
    Yakuzza Lethecus: ocean :)
Eliza Madrigal: haha... yes, generally :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: by the way, are you taking classes or do you study something ?
    Eliza Madrigal: I study everything
    Eliza Madrigal laughs
Yakuzza Lethecus: hehe, sure you know i mean the institutionalized form of studiing thing
Eliza Madrigal: yes, I know... I'm not institutionalized right now
    Yakuzza Lethecus: lol
    Eliza Madrigal: hehe
Yakuzza Lethecus: not what i mean :)
    Yakuzza Lethecus: rofl
    Eliza Madrigal: hahaha
Eliza Madrigal: Honestly, my hands are so full with my kids...
Eliza Madrigal: right now that's my focus. I do look forward to more formal study in the future though
Yakuzza Lethecus: it´s fine, i also don´t do distant study or somehing alike right now
Eliza Madrigal: So I occupy myself with meaningful pursuits... like PaB
Yakuzza Lethecus: we give meaning to pab
Eliza Madrigal: In a few months I'd like to take an intensive Spanish course... am saving for that
    Eliza Madrigal nods
Yakuzza Lethecus: right now i consider giving up on my spanish class :P
Yakuzza Lethecus: it´s for free but i don´t need spanish, and the teacher she is so helpful
Eliza Madrigal: With self-study re Spanish, I felt too many false-starts... so I'm not going to get back into it really until I can submerge
Eliza Madrigal: I guess I'm like that generally....
Yakuzza Lethecus: so i just feel bad when i just can´t just hang around there, she will try to help me and so i occupy ressources
    Eliza Madrigal: one sec...
    Eliza Madrigal: Ah, sorry....
Eliza Madrigal: there are some SL glitches today
Eliza Madrigal: so was responding to someone's question about that :)
    Yakuzza Lethecus: no problelm
    Yakuzza Lethecus: problem
Eliza Madrigal: Oh, I see what you are saying about the Spanish.... yes....
Eliza Madrigal: people who love their subjects can be so generous with their time
Yakuzza Lethecus: and i don´t know how to effectivly surround myself with the language
Yakuzza Lethecus: english is easy :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: as you can see right now
Eliza Madrigal: You say that, but so many people say it is terribly difficult
Yakuzza Lethecus: but find such a place in spansih where ur interested in the topics
Eliza Madrigal: It being my only language really (typical American) I can't say
    --BELL--
Eliza Madrigal: May I ask how you felt about the first guardian meeting, Ya?
    Yakuzza Lethecus: nothing :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Nothing?
Yakuzza Lethecus: it was a meeting :)
Eliza Madrigal: :) I thought it had a completely different feel to it....
Eliza Madrigal: and especially in that space Storm constructed...
    Eliza Madrigal: really warm
Yakuzza Lethecus: yeah, i was there before :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: we had the issue at which time the meeting should be
Yakuzza Lethecus: and somebody posted the villagehall tp that day
    Eliza Madrigal: Ah, yes
Eliza Madrigal: I ask what you felt because I was curious what you thought of the ideas

Practice sessions, chat is not chat...

Eliza Madrigal: or generally, the focus of PaB and practice sessions, etc
Yakuzza Lethecus: maybe i should read the chatlog again in which sense ,,inworld retreat" was meant
Eliza Madrigal: Hm, well just an idea of having more time and no recordings...once in a while
Eliza Madrigal: as in a RL retreat
Yakuzza Lethecus: oh, pab and practice sessions, i stay on the opinion that it´s exploration and many people contnribute different topics everyday
Yakuzza Lethecus: too much focus would destroy it possibly
Eliza Madrigal: Can you say more about that?
Yakuzza Lethecus: for me it´s just contemplation and general chat with many interesting people around here
Yakuzza Lethecus: people share their interests around here and i elaborate on those thoughts and also learn on them and others also can do that because pab is open to everyone
Eliza Madrigal: Balance is funny. PaB is interesting in part because it is not just chat, and yet I agree that's a vital part of things... that each session takes on its own personality, etc
Eliza Madrigal: and is open, yes
Yakuzza Lethecus: oh, chat is not chat :)
    Eliza Madrigal smiles
Yakuzza Lethecus: chat might be sillyness and onigokko but it might also be that sombody is talking about his sustainability project :)
    Eliza Madrigal nods
Eliza Madrigal: Some of the funnest sessions for me are those that have excercizes
Yakuzza Lethecus: oh, i don´t like exercises i don´t know how to handle the feeling of pressure in any form
Eliza Madrigal: Ah, you mean articulating what you experienced?
    Yakuzza Lethecus: right
Eliza Madrigal: yes me too sometimes
Eliza Madrigal: but afterwards I'm always glad I tried
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: but ur better with typing and words since you´re a scribe :)
Eliza Madrigal: Ohhh, well yes scribing has given me practice. :)
    Eliza Madrigal: Want to try?
    Eliza Madrigal: :)

    Posting Chat Logs...

Yakuzza Lethecus: no, i think even more about task then they would really need
Yakuzza Lethecus: i haven´t commented the chatlog i posted in the pab wiki from my session
Yakuzza Lethecus: or i still think a couple of times that i should post the 3rd log
Yakuzza Lethecus: but i haven´t done it
Eliza Madrigal: The easiest thing to do is post it right after...
Eliza Madrigal: then not think about it... and yet go back and add comments if you like
Yakuzza Lethecus: i just carry the thought around without getting active
Yakuzza Lethecus: and thats not even unncommon for me, even as bad as that might sound
Yakuzza Lethecus: and i don´t even feel very well about that, but it´s hightly irrational
Yakuzza Lethecus: i think i will just post that 3rd thing also just without any comments
Eliza Madrigal: I guess this is where my mom skills come in... because for me it is a matter of it being far easier to just get it done immeditately...
Yakuzza Lethecus: you guys all do structure all posting
Eliza Madrigal: and I think, though this is funny, that karma is like that too....
Yakuzza Lethecus: if they are getting posted and wol doens´t have to to all our work again :P
Eliza Madrigal: whatever messes we make we can address right away and it is easier
    Yakuzza Lethecus: doesn´t
    Eliza Madrigal giggles
Eliza Madrigal: Yes, the main thing is posting them
Eliza Madrigal: I heard a funny expression yesterday, and I liked it...
Eliza Madrigal: "It is hard to swim with cabbages under your arms"
    Yakuzza Lethecus: just fire
    --BELL--
Eliza Madrigal: So whatever we can drop 'as we go' gives us energy/ability to flow with what comes up
Yakuzza Lethecus: was it out of an cheating context in school of ur kids ? :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: don´t do spiking you have to learn it for urself or it won´t even help you nexttime ? :P
    Eliza Madrigal: haha...
Eliza Madrigal: well kind of. A house full of people is a great learning environment
Eliza Madrigal: I can't keep up with 'everything'
    Eliza Madrigal: and 'everyone'
    Yakuzza Lethecus: hehe :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: how many kids do you have ?
    Yakuzza Lethecus: 2-3 ?
    Eliza Madrigal: Three :)
Eliza Madrigal: Each a wonderful handfull his or her own way
Yakuzza Lethecus: did you attend college before you got the kids ?
Eliza Madrigal: So I used to try to pick up behind others, and tie loose ends....
Eliza Madrigal: until I realized that I wasn't helping them by doing it for them
    Yakuzza Lethecus: smile :)
Eliza Madrigal: Ah, for college I have various credits
Eliza Madrigal: but have worked outside of that
Yakuzza Lethecus: what are the ways in the states ?
Eliza Madrigal: I've been hired by the kids' schools, etc
Eliza Madrigal: just based on the fact that they seemed to be doing well, truth be told
    Eliza Madrigal: :)
Yakuzza Lethecus: for example i also just did a ,,non" academic way here in germany so thats even why i am more curious about the academics often :P
Eliza Madrigal: My trajectory is very different from most here
    Eliza Madrigal: a little upside-down even :)

    Apprenticeship

Yakuzza Lethecus: I had the issue that i always wanted to study and then somehow i couldn´t learn anything anymore
Yakuzza Lethecus: so i just did a regular apprenticeship
Eliza Madrigal: I think that's wonderful actually... apprenticeships, etc
    Eliza Madrigal: learn by doing
Yakuzza Lethecus: but i still suffer a bit about the issue ,,why i couldn´t learn well" while i ,,wanted to learn"
Yakuzza Lethecus: in germany you do an apprenticeship for every job
Yakuzza Lethecus: so i heard that the word apprenticeshipi in the states is sometimes used for some more qualified things :)
Eliza Madrigal: Ah, well it can be used across the board.... anything skilled I think requires working with someone else...
Yakuzza Lethecus: i had to learn 3 years to become a metal worker with focus on milling
Eliza Madrigal: reading about something isn't sufficient
    Yakuzza Lethecus: right
Eliza Madrigal: There is some concern now that too many people are losing those types of physical skills... that careers become too dependent on one
    Eliza Madrigal: type of economy
    Eliza Madrigal: whether technological, etc
Yakuzza Lethecus: one of my main focus is the issue that we are learning anyway and all the time but somehow i killed some of my general curiousity in the past
Yakuzza Lethecus: so ,,wanting to learn" things is a bad thing for my while ,,just learning" is more or less the key even when that his a bit of abstraction

Apologies, but here I rant a bit and Yakuzza flees for safety...

Eliza Madrigal: Well, I doubt you killed it Ya. Our school structures can be terribly oppressive, imo. I hate to say that, but I have spent all my parenting years wrestling with it
Eliza Madrigal: ...taking little consideration for the natural styles and interests of children, etc
Yakuzza Lethecus: here when the kids are at age 10 they are split up in hauptschule, realschule and gymnasium
    Yakuzza Lethecus: worst,middle,best
Eliza Madrigal: And for all the oppression, they still come out of it, at least in America, with all kinds of gaps
    Eliza Madrigal looks up words
Yakuzza Lethecus: so which kind of school you attend gives a high influence where you end up and it´s decided at age 10
Eliza Madrigal: Ahhh, yes similar here certainly.... so many categories!
Yakuzza Lethecus: sure it´s just a high corelation
    --BELL--
Eliza Madrigal: Yesterday I attended a school event in the area, and the presentation nearly made me cry....
Yakuzza Lethecus: you guys have just the hightschools but there is even the possibility to get into private highschools, less hispanic highschools... ?
Eliza Madrigal: I was seated with friends whose son has struggled to just do 'okay' and the entire presentation was about how you have to do __, __, __ and that the good schools only want the most talented, etc
Yakuzza Lethecus: worst to the worst let kids learn worst virtures is a feeling of mine
    Eliza Madrigal: Hmm
Eliza Madrigal: yes it seems like we do things to fix one problem...
Eliza Madrigal: which is maybe not having high resources for certain areas...
Yakuzza Lethecus: i have to leave :(
    Yakuzza Lethecus: bye !
Eliza Madrigal: but we aren't far sighted
    Yakuzza Lethecus: cya around
Eliza Madrigal: Oh..okay/ Bye for now :)
